Exetel nbn, Opticomm & LBNCo Internet Plans: 50/20 $54.95, 100/20 $69.95 Per Month for 6 Months & No Lock in Contract @ Exetel

1111

Some pretty good plans from Exetel which are in line with prices on the Comm Bank target deal of 40% off. Only catch is prices rise after the 6 months honeymoon period, by that time the big red party should win and we should have NZ like internet UL 500/500 for $50 a month ( I know I am dreaming lol)

50/20 $54.95 per month
100/20 $69.95 per month
100/40 $79.95 per month

Also now the $10/mth Unlimited call pack (VOIP and can transfer your no) which includes the following is now just $5 per month after the Slash My Bill discount.

Unlimited local & national calls
Unlimited 1300/13 calls
Unlimited calls to Australian mobiles (in Australia)
Unlimited international calls to: UK, New Zealand, USA, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, France, Canada, China, Singapore, India and Croatia. Other country call rates.

TAKE $5/MTH OFF your broadband bill every month when you order this eligible SLASH MY BILL bundle service.

I just transferred across from Origin/ABB free 2 months deal to this on on Opticomm Fibre/FTTP and was transferred without any hassle. I signed up on the 50/20 unlimited plan for $54.95 and pretty much getting around ~55-58 Mbps downloads and ~18-20 Mbps uploads all throughout the time (have Sam Knows box paired up with eero 6 mesh to monitor performance)

  • No $99 activation fee like other providers charge for Opticomm Fibre
  • Download speeds over-provisioned by around 15% as probably they want to stay at No 1 of the ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia Report
  • Currently Ranked 1 in ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia Report from 17th March 2022 (Optus is at No 2, ABB is distant No 7 I think)
  • No lock in contract (there is a 30 day notice period if you want to transfer/churn/cancel)
  • Free VoIP (works great for my alarm system) which works with VoIP handset as well as SIP software
  • Free Home Secure for 3 months (seems to be a decent network security without needing to install any software and works even with custom DNS)
  • Does not seem to throttle torrents etc
  • Good content peering with CDN, all streaming services picked up 4k within 10-20 seconds even with a 50/20 multi user household
  • Uses Superloop backbone network, so international speeds are pretty great (Exetel is now owned by Superloop)

I've been with Exetel since 2010, back then on ADSL1. Now on FTTN 50/20 Plan.

Anytime I've had an issue, tech support has been helpful enough.
Recently I had to get a new modem and decided to get the one supplied by Exetel ZTE H1600 along with the Mesh Repeater.
Not a bad price and the unit isn't bad either, $160 and $100. Didn't need the Mesh Repeater, the Wi-Fi on the modem was good enough.

There's an Exetel Employee on Whirlpool who is really helpful. Who also answers after hours, something you rarely see from other businesses.
I had some Wi-Fi dropout issues with the new modem which was quickly resolved by him.

    • +4

I had experience with that employee on whirlpool too, really nice guy who even sent me a free modem. Exetel was nothing but good!

      • +1

        More than likely.

I forgot to mention, with the ZTE H1600 my connection is 10Mbps faster than it was when I had my Asus modem.

        • Internet or wifi?

This isn't useful information without knowing the model, age, or state of the ASUS router which sounds like it may have been faulty.

In general, an Asus router will be better than what an ISP provided router.

          • @ihfree: I had the DSL-AC68U and then the DSL-AC88U. Both of which have never ever got past 40Mbps.
With the new unit I'm getting between 45-49Mbps.

This is wired connection not wifi.

      • +2

Lol that the guy Glenn Ward who posted this deal this morning

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/697762

He seems a bit pissed these days after the business was sold from the Linton's to Superloop !

    • +1

ISP provided modems are almost always a bad idea. There are security risks as firmware updates are often rare, they're often locked down so you effectively don't own the device. A whirlpool thread suggests Exetel don't provide the admin password.

In this case, you could pick up a more flexible mesh system for a comparable price which would provide more flexibility.

The router (or modem) is a favour to Exetel as it streamlines their support and likely helps them recoup discounted plans. It is also not required as their old rep used to claim.

      • What do you mean don't provide Admin Password? I have the Admin Password.

        • Not exactly a secret but according to the first post they had to call to get the password. The default didn't appear to be in the user manual published by Exetel.

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/36yz1228

          • @ihfree: Well for that only few people who bought the modem. Maybe Exetel forgotten to slap a sticker on the back of the modem that mentions the username and password?

When I was with Exetel 2 months back and had their modem, I had a sticker on the back of the modem. That guy could be the first customer of the new modem supplied by Exetel and they must have forgotten to slap the sticker on.

          • @ihfree: the username and password by default is admin

Why are so many plans slowing the upload rate, used to be the norm was 100/40, whats up with this 100/20 nonsense?

    • +2

You can pick 100/40 for an extra 10 bucks

    • +1

Trying to upsell to 250/25 or 1000/50 if you want decent upload I guess.

I'm a fan of 100/40 - 100 down is enough and 40 up is handy from time to time.

I switched from superloop to exetel yesterday - fairly painless - about an hour for superloop to cut off and I had the exetel login details about half an hour later.
Superloop texted me to confirm that I was leaving and wanted the account closed - it was the last day of the billing cycle and I removed my cc details so all tidy on the billing side there.

    • 100/40 for $79.95, not sure why you are complaining. nbn takes almost $50-55 based on how many CVC has to be bought, still people would only care if they would rather give up their capital gains or have a shitty nbn. Most would take not axing the capital gains unfortunately, good decent internet (I would call it 100/100 symmetric speeds a decent one) is not a priority for 90% of Australian population

  • Not in par with commbank's 40% off offer.

    • Most ppl have the 30% offer now on the app even after deleting all offers !

      • @renegade
How was Origin ABB? Did they have free VoIP numbers etc?

        • I was on 1000/50 free for 2 months (albeit with $99 connection fee for Opticomm), speeds were great, but wont pay that price for ABB

          • @regenade: We're you able to bring your VoIP numbers across?

    • +1

      "Not in par with commbank"

There is an reason for that.

      1. Exetel has better international routing for those who watch streams from Oversea, and gamers who play internationally as Superloop is the transit for Exetel. Best international routing. Where MORE Telecom uses Vocus for international which is known not to be great for oversea streaming and online gaming internationally.

      2. Exetel come with FREE Static IP that you can Opt in via Member Portal where MORE Telecom (Commbank) doesn't offer Static IP for those who have security camera, nor other services that require Static IP.

      3. Exetel come with both IPv4 and IPv6. From what I learnt about MORE Telecom, they don't come with IPv6 because "Vocus" what a shame.

So lack of those 3 things from MORE Telecom (CommBank) so of course they have to give discount. They wouldn't offer 30% off, if they have better international routing, come with IPv6 and Static IP? But again, 30% only last 12 months.

And no everyone dont get 40% off, as 40% off is ONLY for people with Awards Credit Card.

I am still a customer and have been for years. After seeing this, I rang them and 5 min later they dropped my monthly fee by $15 for 6 months after that the ongoing fee is -$6 to what I paid last month. Process was easy no call hold time. Give them a call if you are an existing customer to score a discount.

    Thank you OP.

    • Might give this a go.

      Although the question really is:
      A. Save $15 off my $69.95 50/20 plan or
      B. See what the fuss is about, and save $20 off the $89.95 100/20 plan, being a speed upgrade for the same money.

      WWYD?

    • What was your monthly fee before the discount?
I’m currently paying $66 for the 50/20 plan.

Are you saying they’ll give me the discounted rate for 6 months. And then I’ll go back to my $66 plan?
      Thanks

      • It’s worth a try. I just rang them and asked what they could do for me. The guy was very nice and did whatever he could, he mentioned “retention” in no way had I suggested I was leaving, in any case the outcome was good. I was happy with his service.

I am on the 250/25 plan at $125/m. Current offer for new customers is $99/month for 6 months

So they dropped it to $119 plus - $15/month for 6 months.

Best of luck. If you don’t ask you won’t get. So true

  • Personal experience.. wost ISP in entire Australia is LBNco.

    • +2

LBNCo is a wholesaler like nbn, problem is people dont even check what internet they will get before they move to a new place. You are better off with Telstra/Optus/Vodafone 5G than being on LBNCo.

Very happy with exetel ..good speed ,descent care and no throttling (unlike the big brother type shops )

Customer service across all these shops are the same

    Me : No internet
Cc : Are modem lights bliking , did u power cycle?

Cc : Ok we have raised a ticket with NBN
Cc : please rate your experience

    • Same here.

    • Do you know if VPN and torrent traffic is throttled or not?

  • +1

Average customer service but good forum support. I got quick set up, always get 100% speeds, no down time.

  • +4

    No lock in contract, yet

    30-day cancellation notice period

is still considered a contract in nature.

    • +1

this is the killer part. i had to pay out my 30 day fees even though i have connected with new provider. so i was basically 2 ip fees in that switchover month.

  • Does anyone use exetel (or any pppoe connection really) with the Telstra Smart Gen2 modem?

I need to use the modem in bridge mode as it its only purpose on my setup is the modem i use a dlink router and mesh wifi setup for the rest. Any issues with using the telsra modem in bridge mode and having to enter pppoe credentials? The dlink has a router settings page and has the option to select pppoe and enter credentials but i am not taking that as it will work.

    • I would think it would work. put telstra in bridge mode, and enter the credentials in your D-Link router.

I have used old Optus and belong modems in bridge mode and they work (as long as there is no vlan tag requirements by provider.)

  • I am with ABB and the support is just ok at times and so I am tempted to jump on this. Paying $99 for the same plan.

    • Haven't been with Aussie for a while now (they were my first NBN provider and I used them for years before the hype). I remember Aussie would have constant maintenance at around 12am when I was with them. They also had those router migration issues.

Don't know if they improved, but I used origin NBN which supposedly is whitelabeled NBN and it failed our IPTV streaming test.

International links and peering seems comparable, maybe a slight advantage for superloop. I believe Aussie has more CVC per POI but I haven't noticed slowdowns during peak for superloop.

Don't have the same issue with superloop and they do t have those maintenance windows Aussie does (did when I used them). I hear support is crap with superloop but I haven't utilised them.

Superloop also feels responsive as there was always a 1 seconds delay with Aussie when you would query a url.

  • Cheers OP. Signed up and all is good. Getting 104/20 on FTTN.

15 minutes after signing up I got a text from superloop confirming im changing providers.
Internet was down for 30 minutes then it was up and running.

Had to manually enter the info into the modem though. This is usually automatic when switching providers.

    • Depends if it's pppoe or ipoe. I'm guessing more are moving to the latter. Last time I entered credentials was on telecube and dialup before that.

      • +1

I selected PPPoE in the modem settings so i presume so

    • I'm currently with Launtel and just signed up to Exetel.

Do I need to disconnect my service with Launtel or will that automatically happen and Exetel will provide me with the details to reconfigure modem?

      • Most likely need to call Launtel tomorrow and confirm it

      • Launtel uses IPOE, and Exetel uses PPPoE. Yes I know Superloop uses IPOE, and Superloop bought Exetel few months ago so Exetel is a premium brand of Superloop's where Exetel manages CVC and bandwidth better than Superloop themselves.

Just leave Launtel connected until you get your credential from Exetel to put in your router/modem to connect to their network. Then after that, you can disconnect Launtel for minimize interruptions.

  • +1

These guys are good, been with them for a few years now.
For Opticomm at least, when I signed up the service was active within 10 minutes and I could just switch over.
When I've needed support from them, they've been pretty helpful, even though I don't use their supplied gear.
They have very good pricing and speeds, right now I'm getting around 5% more than I pay for - this is true even at peak times.
    https://www.speedtest.net/result/13104168540
There is the occasional outage once or twice a year, rarely an entire service outage, main issues I've had were with low upload bandwidth or something minor like IPv6 breaking.
Since I'm a long time customer I've got 100/40 with IPv6 and a static IP for $89.99, worth sticking with them I guess.

    • +2

+1 to over-provisioning the speeds from nbn/Opticomm. Exetel seem to be allow a bit more, as I am hitting ~5-10% even at peak times on Opticomm that too to International servers !!

      https://www.speedtest.net/result/13104224433

  • +1

This is inline with the 30% Commbank deal, not the 40%. I'm on the 30% one and the price is the exact same for the 100/20.

    • Well sorry to burst your bubbles. Exact same price, yes but missing 3 things which is probably not important to you.

      • Exetel has better international routing for those who watch streams from Oversea, and gamers who play internationally as Superloop is the transit for Exetel. Best international routing. Where MORE Telecom uses Vocus for international which is known not to be great for oversea streaming and online gaming internationally.

I'm not saying you are making wrong decision, it what depends on what you do with your internet. If you don't game, and if you dont watch streaming service outside of Australia then you are pretty much fine with Commbank deal.

      • +1

… Thanks for mansplaining. The OP wrote it is inline with Commbank's 40% off, I am merely saying, it is actually in fact inline with the 30% off deal price wise. I was not discrediting the deal, I am merely providing more information for our fellow OzBargainers as our duty as you are… with added condescension.

        • They have a choice between Commbank and Exetel but kudos to you for keeping calm :) gave you a +

  • I am currently with mate on 100/20 plan with my HFC connection. During peak it slows down to terrible speeds. Not sure what is happening but speedtest.net says speeds are fine and every other speed test site I have tried says otherwise (15-40mbps). It's definitely slow though because browsing the web is slow/buffering. Would swapping providers to an ISP that doesn't use vocus help? Or will all ISPs be the same because of my HFC? It's not my router either I use pfsense and same issue with my unifi USG and direct connection to my HFC NTD with my windows laptop.

    • +1

I have HFC with Mate 50/20 and experience slow speed sometimes 10 to 15 mbps.

    • +1

"Would swapping providers to an ISP that doesn't use vocus help?"

That's correct. Vocus is known for those slow down while they priorities their traffic for speedtest to fool the customers making them think nothing is wrong when there is.

Take my advice, never sign up to ISP that uses Vocus, I did try Vocus a few times last year and two and always experience that too. After that, never again. Just stick to Exetel (that uses Superloop), AussieBB, Launtel or any other ISP that does not use Vocus.

      • Thanks for your reply! I suspected this was the case because mate treated the speedtest.net benchmark as the holy bible and would not accept any others.

One question though - I thought superloop (or exetel) signed a deal with vocus too?

        • +2

"I thought superloop (or exetel) signed a deal with vocus too?"

Yes for some part, and Superloop entirely own their network around Australia and some POP oversea. So when you query any searches through Google or others, it would instantly come up which is quite responsive using their own network compare to AussieBB which is 1-2 seconds longer with AussieBB own connection around Australia.

Tech side of thing can be complicated for some people to understand how it play out/work out. If you are planning to join Superloop, go to Exetel the premium brand as Superloop had decided to make their own brand the budget cuts where Exetel is the premium brand of Superloop.

          Other Info from other user on OzBargain found in other Exetel thread;

Superloop purchased Exetel and decided to make Exetel their premium brand and in the process turn Superloop into their budget brand. Weird thing to do considering superloops good reputation thus far. CVC upgrades stopped happening most of the times they started removing parts of their network under budget cuts.

You can see the stats from the ACCC here https://imgur.com/a/tDecowM and be disgusted yet amazed at the same time at what was once the premium RSP alongwith ABB and see it for what it currently is.

Latest post - https://whrl.pl/RgqqvY from "Superloop "typical evening speed" downgraded. You'll see every RSP get great scores and everyone got better. Except for Superloop which dropped about 80%". He got congestion on one of his POI few days back. I would still go with Exetel over Superloop. Superloop clearly has made Exetel the premium brand.

  • Do they use CGNAT?

    • +1

Yes, but can be opted out and have support for dual stack IPv4/IPv6 at no additional charge

    • Yes by default, you can easily opt out of that in your member portal, where it has a drop down menu for a reasoning to opt out eg. Security camera, then you get static ip pretty much instantly after submitting it.

  • Any downtime for churning? I am ABB (Origin) HFC. Last time I went ABB to Origin it was 4 hours or so during business hours :(

    • +1

Did it this morning - about 20-30 mins downtime.

      • +1

Did you need to reconfigure or reset wifi router? Last time I did this I needed to reset Nest WiFi which was a PITA

        • Yes, you have to change the settings with a new username and password.

    • ABB = IPOE
Exetel = PPPoE (this is where you are sent with a username and password to put in your router nor modem)

  • im on opticomm and been with exetel in past but when i put my address it says we dont provide service, very odd

    • Call them up and sign-up or try again later as the address checker does not seem to be working for Opticomm

      • Opticomm address checker seems to be working now

  • +1

Does Exetel still do credit checks on people? That's the only thing from stopping me giving them another go.
There's nothing wrong with my credit, I just don't want a mark on my file for a $54 per month service that will be auto-debited from my credit card, which I did have to have credit approval in order to get.

    • +1

Yes they will do a credit check unless you have/had already an account with them before.

      • Thanks

  • Assume switching from Superloop to Exetel will see the same traffic routes and no impact to ping or performance?

    • +1

Yep no change at all, even the plans are same lol. You should be able to get same pricing from Superloop if you threaten to disconnect/switch

  • I'm currently considering which of the two offers to go with - the 30% CBA deal or this one. Anyone have any insights on which ISP (exetel vs more) would be better to go with for a very similar price?

    • +1

Exetel being on the superloop network should be way better than More. Also exetel have a much nicer My Account portal and app. If pricing is exactly same, best to go with Exetel

    • +1

CBA as in More Telecom that uses Vocus, which is why Vocus are bad for international when it comes to streaming oversea, and gaming oversea too.

Domestic wide, no issue as it is pretty much same across all ISP for domestic use.

If you use international alot then go with Exetel that uses Superloop that get you better speed and latency oversea!!

    • +1

Thanks, signed up the Exetel yesterday, connected today. Very quick and easy. Bizarrely, after the changeover my prime video app on Apple TV now keeps saying no internet connection, despite all the other apps working on Apple TV, and prime video working on my other devices.

      Bloody technology!

      • +1

Try power cycling your devices. If not, maybe try clearing cache see if that does the trick. Sometimes it is stuck from previous provider.

I was with Exetel before and had no problem with any apps even Apple TV.

  • +2

In case anyone was interested - signed up to 100/40 this morning (coming to the end of my 2 free Origin months), and was connected about 1.5 hours later. Had no internet for maybe 20-30 mins.

  • Paying 98 for 100/40 on Superloop- and my billing cycle has just churned yesterday. Is it better to just change providers closer to the end of the billing cycle?

    • Yes unless they do pro-rata refund

      • Superloop does pro rata refund I think , so you should be able to churn/transfer, more so if you activate the connection before the bill is generated

  • FYI for anyone considering this on opticomm..

I signed up and was connected like 1 hour later, but, I could not get my internet to work. Apparently it's an 'opticomm issue' and exetel are following up with them. I haven't had internet for 24 hours. I switched from Leaptel and everything was working fine.

    YMMV

    • I faced the issue as well but tech support resolved that within 5-10 min by assigning a new IP range. Make sure you are chatting to tech support and not order support/provisioning team

      • Thanks. I have been chatting with support. Still not getting any where. Now it's a problem with my Mac address they say. Getting sick of the run around! Internet was working perfectly fine before the switch.

        • Probably got some of the inept Sri Lankan tech support guys ! Ask escalating to L2 support, they should be able to resolve with a new IP range. Also make sure you have turned off your Opticomm NTD for > 2 min, so that it gets a new lease and gets the config update if you switched across to Exetel on the same port as your previous ISP.

IPoE to PPoE (Exetel) transfers along with dual stack IPv4/IPv6 transitions dont work very well in the Opticomm network, its still a WIP

          • @regenade: Thanks for your efforts I appreciate it. Turns out it boiled down to a typo in the text I received with my login details.. lol
            Up and running now

  • +1

Exetel or spintel? Both seem to have the same prices for 100/20…

Superloop bought Exetel out, so it pretty easy to tell the difference.

Spintel uses or resell the Optus NBN services to customer with less overhead rooms.

Superloop, AussieBB, Launtel are best and known as for international routing if you game or watch stream internationally then the answer is pretty easy to this one. Exetel is your answer since it use Superloop transit domestic and internationally.

Optus is not great when it comes to internationally, and horrible latency internationally compares to those above.

Think carefully before purchasing. After speaking with Roger on the phone from Exetel who reassured me that my new Exetel service will be started on Friday 6th May, they went and put an order through to NBN who cancelled my current ISP so I have no internet. I am currently on hold as they say their supervisors only return calls between 24 ~ 48 hours later. Please tread carefully. They have difficulty activating a new service on a forthcoming date.

    • Thanks for the warning! Are you on FTTP?

    • Same experience with Superloop. They connected me within a day instead of couple of months

  • there is no "schedule for future date connection"

so if I signup now when will they process the order?
will it be the same day? 2nd day? or sometime next week?

I think you can schedule future date if you call them up and ask for it. I don't think they have it on web forum when ordering online.

If you sign up at approx 8am on that day, they would progress same day before 5pm up to 24 hours.

      • thank you…I almost gave up and go with other ISP, will give them a call before signing up!

        • I can confirm that they will schedule the connection date over the phone. I have mine scheduled for 1st June.
