  • is there any cost if i end the contract right after one month?

    • +1

      No.

      • +5

Saving money is part of it, did you notice what website this is? The other part is trying out providers firsthand to see what they're like.

If money is so loose for you, I would be willing to take some off your hands.

        • -3

Nah mate, it's not that. I mean is it even worth the hassle? On the other hand if people keep cancelling services just by using the free month, how are these businesses meant to survive?

          • +1

@lightfoot: When contracts were a thing, I thought it was too much effort too. Then I got lucky, and a three month free offer came up, just as my contract was going to end. I've since had more than two years of free internet, and tried out multiple different providers firsthand.

So is it worth it for one month? I can see how someone happy with their current provider, on a discounted rate, or just lazy, might say no. If you do it often enough, or just enjoy trying new providers, then it absolutely is worth it.

As for how will giant multi-million dollar companies survive? It's just part of their marketing budget. Why spend so much money on traditional advertising that everyone just tunes out, when you can do something like this instead?

            • -1

@[Deactivated]: Wait, two years free internet? So you're telling me I could have a lifetime supply of free internet if I kept churning? I mean wouldn't you get flagged by providers?

              • +1

@lightfoot: That's with various different providers. Many only offered their free month(s) once, and never again. Aussie let you be a new customer, and get a free month, every six months.

Some, like Telstra, have a satisfaction guarantee. They even let me keep their modem, and the 4G backup on it still works more than two years later. It runs at 25/5Mbps.

I'm currently using Belong's free month or two, and will go with Aussie then Dodo after that. I can't be sure new providers will offer more free internet, so I might have to actually pay for it after that. Of course if they do offer more free internet, I will take them up on it.

                • -1

@[Deactivated]: Didn't realise belong offered free months. How's their service in your opinion?

                  • +1

@lightfoot: This is the first time I have seen them do it. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/669300 I signed up at a future date, the 2nd of this month, so I should get Feb and Mar free, since they only issue invoices on the 1st. That's what I meant by month or two. It's unclear whether they still do that or not. I'll find out when they issue the first invoice.

I have used Belong previously, and their Starter plan was terrible. The shaper really messed with things, and torrents barely worked without a VPN. I'm using a Belong 100/20 plan now for free, and it's actually pretty decent. Of course they're also charging a lot more, so perhaps they're using the extra money to buy more capacity, instead of throttling the network.

            • @[Deactivated]: Nice work. I'm curious to see a list of ISPs you've churned through during the past two years of free access.

              • +2

@Reveen: For NBN it was Aussie, SuperLoop, Belong, FibreMax, Epic, Aqua Mobile, Telstra, Voda, MyRepublic, Southern Phone, Exetel, Mate, Flip, Moose Mobile, GoodTel, Tangerine, Launtel, and I still have Dodo and Future 12/1 to try free.

There's also Felix, TPG and Voda on 4G I am yet to try, but those are all on the Voda network, and I'm not very optimistic about my reception.

Some of those were multiple months, others were using their risk free/trials/satisfaction guarantees that were anywhere from 7,14,21 or 30 days. Combining the lesser ones to reach a full month, and using Telstra's Gen 2 4G that I got free from Telstra, and still works at 25/5 more than two years since I left Telstra, if there was any downtime while switching.

  • Do they offer static ip?

  • +1

    And then $65, $75 or $85.

  • +1

My superloop 6 month offer is coming to an end - good to hop onto this, hopefully another good offer will come along to hop onto

  • +6

Beware Dodo's customer service is terrible. Good pricing but will give you a headache if you have troubles

    • +3

I signed up to this a few weeks ago and definitely agree about the customer service. I was inquiring whether they offered any speeds faster than 100mbps and they were adamant in telling me that nowhere in Australia can get over 100mpbs.

Not sure if they violated any laws telling me that misinformation but it damn near made me not want to take the free month at all.

      • yeah DODO don't offer >100Mbps.. yes their customer service is terrible and ill-informed, that being said.. I've been with them for internet, gas and electricity for the past 8 years as they were the cheapest out of all offers.. since I have gas and electricity with them I've been paying $75 per month for the 100Mbps NBN connection for the past 5 or more years (even since my area was upgraded to NBN.. I'm on HFC so could change, but meh.. speed is good enough for me).

        • +2

It is their fastest speed, which is fine, but the customer service agent was telling me that no other provider offers any speeds faster than that.

I did end up signing over gas and electricity too as the gas was the cheapest and the electricity for the 3 months free internet. Couldn't resist

    • +1

Their number of ombudsman complaints rivals Telstra, even though Telstra serves many many more customers

  • Just relocated interstate and never been with Dodo…3 months free does sound tempting. We were gonna try out Enova for power but rethinking now

    • +1

Idk eh, the reviews for dodo on productreview are pretty scary

      • +1

I haven't used them yet, so can't really say what they're like. People are definitely more likely to post a review when they have a problem than saying that it's working as expected.

I have used Belong previously, and their Starter plan was terrible. The shaper really messed with things, and torrents barely worked without a VPN. I'm using a Belong 100/20 plan now for free, and it's actually pretty decent.

I'll give Dodo a shot after Belong. I'm not planning to switch energy providers though.

      • +1

see my post above.. 9 years for all utilities (apart from water - obviously) and never had any issues - they have always been well priced and not had any issues with service that was their fault).

  • oh wow, my 1 month free aussie broadband ends in late Feb. Any ideas when this deal will end?

    Does dodo use PPPOA

  • +1

Ah geez. I'm with Dodo for electricity already. Gonna switch out and then switch back to get the three months free internet offer.

    This is the way.

    • That is some serious OzBargaining spirit you have.

  • No Dodo solar :(

  • Do you have to stay 3months electricity for the 3 month internet?

    • Both services must be active at the same address for 3 months.

  • +1

any credit checks? how easy to end the connection?

  • Less Solar Export
$0.00 dont they pay solar credits?

  • Can you set activation one month in advance? Needing to start churning from late March, was thinking of either getting one month free from Dodo or Aussie broadband but both expires end of March. Is it possible to activate either one from late March and set up the other from late April?

    • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11752776/redir said yes to ordering at a future date with Dodo. I haven't tested personally. I have ordered ABB at a future date previously.

      • Thanks! Saw your next comment suggesting to use ABB first as you're considered "new" every 6 months, good tip :) I think Superloop is 12 months so have to wait till Sept.

  • I had a look through and can't see any information on their upload speeds. A few comments have mentioned it being 100/20 on their top tier. It's a pity if they don't offer 100/40 even if their top plan caps out at 100 down.

  • Does the 1 month free service start from day of NBN service activation or the 1st of subsequent month (like Belong)?

    • +1

Pretty sure Belong are the only ones with that weird policy.

  • Signed up on friday night so far so good https://www.speedtest.net/result/12780681392.png

    • looking good, im signing up tonight

  • +1

Be aware you will need to put up with PPPoE if you sign up with Dodo. You will need to use Dodo's crappy router or buy your own which is compatible with PPPoE. Any day I would prefer a DHCP internet provider, as you won't need to worry about configuring your router - just plug and play.

    • You don't need a router. You can create a PPPoE connection directly from your PC.

      • Did you mean, you can configure your router from a PC? How would you access the internet without a router?

        • +1

No, I meant that you don't need a router. You just connect to your PC and use Windows to create a PPPoE connection.

          • @[Deactivated]: yep, that's how I tested Tangerine as well, same process as the good old dial-up connection.
anyway, pretty much every router supports PPPoE

    • +3

Most modern routers will support both PPPoE and IPoE. If you churn often enough then you become familiar with configuring either one then you won't care whichever it is. But yes I agree at the beginning it was annoying.

Everyone values their time differently but I personally am happy to type in login credentials from an email to save $60 or so

      • Ohhhh… That explains why my new connection isn't working haha, I've been alternating between a few but hadnt had to change this yet. What other ISPs do you churn to?

        • +2

Aussie and Superloop are the ones using IPoE (aka DHCP) that doesn't require typing in login credentials. Just about everyone else I've tried is PPPoE.

For end users there isn't much difference between IPoE and PPPoE other than the login credential at the initial set up. PPPoE has a slightly higher overhead but it's negligible.

      • I am using a modern router - a Ubiquiti UDM - not reliable when it comes to PPPoE. There are routers out there which might hold up with both protocols, however a plug and play will offer you seamless experience. There was some additional pain for me, as I have been running crypto miners too, they were getting blocked by the PPPoE - so I had enough with the PPPoE.

        • +1

PPPoE itself doesn't block anything. The only thing PPPoE has a disadvantage on is multicast.

Without the specifics you should check with your internet provider if they block anything, and whether it was by ports. Also check if there's any DNS blocks when it comes to crypto - try a different unfiltered DNS provider in case some crypto addresses might be mistakenly flagged as dangerous/malicious and filtered out by the DNS service.

Since you are running UDM, could the IDS/IPS have been triggered by the crypto some how? So maybe try disabling that too. I don't have any experience with UDM but would be very surprised if it has weaknesses in PPPoE. PPPoE has been around for a very long time and is still commonly used so Ubiquity would be having serious trouble if their product can't do PPPoE reliably. I'd guess you've got some configs going wrong.

        • Ah, that explains it. Ubiquiti is trash. Not user friendly at all. You put up with Ubiquiti and think PPPoE is bad. That's cap.

      • ^^this, I'm still use to doing this when I use to churn from isp to isp during ADSL days

    • Put up with? How hard is it to just tick a box/dropdown then type a username and password?

  • Anyone signed up using FTTP?

I'm currently on Aussie broadband which doesn't expire till 28th Feb and its currently connected to Uni port 2. I want dodo to connect to Uni port 1 soi I can have 2 services running at the same time incase dodo screws up.

On dodo sign page it has the following options:

    1. "I would like to transfer my existing NBN services to dodo"
    2. "I moving into the premises and would like to connect my new service with dodo"

Which option do I pick? I'm scared of picking Option 1 and they cancel my Aussie Broadband service on Uni port 2 but option 2 doesn't really really reflect my current circumstances.

    • I think Option 2 is the option you want to pick as if you pick option 1 that will cancel your ABB service

      • Thanks, I'll pick option 2

I just checked, my aussie bb actually expires on 25th, so hope they activate me tomorrow or the thursday at the latest.

        • keep us updated, my ABB expires on 28th and would like to change it to Dodo before that.

          • @donb: well this is shit, it looks like NBN has disconnected my ABB service and my DODO service is not ready yet

My internet went down on 12am this morning

  • Just an update - I have now switched over with dodo but never received any confirmation at all.

I use my mobile boost internet to check both my RSP status. I logged into my ABB service and it shows my service has been disconnected, I logged into to Dodo and it shows my connection is active. Entered my login details on my router and my internet is up again.

Never knew they could switch over at midnight and also dunno why they disconnected my ABB Service and use the same Uni d port which is annoying!!!

Not really a smooth experience, I would be screwed if I didn't have my mobile internet as backup

    Kinda sad that I don't have 1000/50 anymore :(

  • yes many rsp are disconnected and connected at midnight by nbn. sucks that you couldnt choose another Uni d port . with superloop i noticed they now ask some questions about current connections so you may be able to get can it connected to another uni port if you are on fttp. hopefully all rsp follow suit and give options and allow customers to choose a second connection if on fttp.

    • Most will just connect on the next available port, but morning connections are far more common than midnight. The only one I have seen that actually lets you choose the UNI-D port is MyRepublic.

  • How is the cancellation process?

  • Dodo blocks torrent sites

Lucky I have a nord vpn subscription which I got from Ozbargain

    • +3

Usually a DNS change is enough to get around it, but VPNs, mirrors and proxies work just fine too.

      • +1

        ahh thanks, changing DNS worked

        • what DNS do you change it to?

          • +1

@googoogaga: Cloudflare, I believe thats the fastest one?

            • +1

@Homr: Tests a range of DNS to see which one is fastest. Granted, I would say there are better options than torrenting on your own computer such as this and this. However, purely for legal reasons I don't know anything about that stuff it is just what my stepfather uses.

      • Yeah Telstra does the same, I alternate between cloudflare and Google dns

        • Why do you alternate?

  • -1

Did you guys read the T&Cs? They have a $75 service fee to make this switch, which means it's a terrible deal…

    • Which T&Cs are you referring to? Link? Total min cost $0 (When you BYO modem) for the free month.

  • anyone know if we need to call them to cancel? or with the new service activating, it automatically cancels?

    • did you cancel it ?

  • Time to churn over to the next free NBN deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/690298

    • Watch out for 30 days no cancellation period: If Eligible, Recipients will receive a $100 Woolworths Store Bonus eGift Card by email up to 90 days after you have successfully activated your service.
In case the service is cancelled within the first 30 days the transaction would be deemed invalid.

    • I'm kind of reluctant to go through third parties, like referral services, and cash back. Of course if you're happy to take the risk, then by all means do.

I did use the Samsung SSD cashback promo, but that was provided by Samsung themselves, and the seller advertised it as being eligible, so if it wasn't, I had a case for a chargeback. Fortunately, I did (eventually) get my Samsung cashback.

It's a lot of waiting, months, and hoops to jump through, and not something I'm in a hurry to repeat.
