Is this good for text based discussions?

    • yeah similar to AIM, MS chat or ICQ

    • +1

Yes, I talk about ISOs all the time.

Before it gets asked for the millionth time, this is what UseNet is https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/wiki/index

    • I still don't get it…

      • It's how you use the net

        • +1

Usenet started out as a University local area network chat and file transfer project in 1979. So it's basically Use Network. Networks existed decades before the Internet.

It was modified to work on the Internet. Internet being just a global tcp/ip network. However tcp/ip networks existed decades earlier called Local Area Network or LAN for short.

  • Pretty good - providers on the same backbone as this one have US$20 specials now and then though.

  • For someone who has already got access to decent private torrent trackers (but not elite level trackers), would you still say Usenet offers good advantages over trackers?

    • +1

For me the main benefit was to get latest episodes of shows without worrying about seeding. Automated with Radarr/Sonarr. I still use private torrent trackers for all tv show collections/season packs. Usenet retention does not compare to torrents, doesn't matter how high that retention number is.

        Thanks, that's very helpful.

Can anyone comment on how usenet compares to trackers for things like: business and personal development courses ("getwsodo" genre) sort of stuff?

        • +1

So bit of a clarification, Usenet providers are the "file" component, not the search engine. You need to get Usenet indexers to actually search for files to download. I suggest you google search "Usenet Indexer + The Item you are after". If you want, private message me some content and I can search on the paid indexers I used to see if the content exists and is downloadable.

I was doing this almost 10yrs ago, when I was running Plex. Have moved on to Kodi + add ons + real-debrid. Much easier without filling up my servers.

        • I am running Jellyfin instead of Plex and tbh I don't know if I would ever leave self hosting media content, storage is cheap as chips now a days and I can't beat the reliability of just having the files locally.

          • @thecakeisalie: Fe, it's needs more manual handling to make sure you're pulling the right content. It's not about storing cost, it's more so the zero need I had to keep any of it and take up more time if a failed drive needs a raid rebuild and the legalities of said stored media. Kodi and real debrid route for me works for its simplicity and function. The Netflix system lol

              @DoesntEvenMatter:

it's needs more manual handling to make sure you're pulling the right content

Not if you're using Sonarr and Radarr.

I have much less issues than my few month trailing Kodi Addons/Android APKs + Real Debrid.

            • @DoesntEvenMatter: Yeah as @PainToad said Sonarr/Radarr automate the entire process, I use Ombi to request stuff/family request stuff. Haven't looked at the 'backend' in months. Using UnRaid so rebuild times are not a factor. Not sure legalities are even a consideration haha. All the best on your setup though.

Usenet retention does not compare to torrents, doesn't matter how high that retention number is.

Just a FYI about that - groups are now using re-posting scripts - so before the usenet post gets too old it will be automatically re-posted. So you'll find that posts won't just be dropping off.

        • I know it just hasn't really come to the same level as torrents. TV Packs are going to be well seeded for a long long time on any half decent private tracker. Usenet is still wild west.

          • @thecakeisalie: meh
as I said below, foreign tv shows is one example, including popular british shows such as line of duty and happy valley - remux season packs can only have 2 seeders. Under 5 is pretty common. For foreign tv shows in other languages, often 1080p and 720p p2p encodes have < 5. eg The Legacy. Remux packs being the size they are means it can be pretty annoying to download from 2 seeders (especially if they are seeding a lot / rate limiting).

            This is BTN btw.

All of the above releases are on usenet.

    • Some older content is poorly seeded on trackers - especially for things like remuxes of older tv shows. Or less well known foreign film remuxes.
Also whilst private trackers are thought to be 'sharing and caring' places, many people seed far too much for their connection to handle and/or rate limit their uploads which can make for a slow download experience. Usenet is usually full speed all the time. Fully seeded recent content will often be full speed on trackers too obviously - and many groups releases will be on trackers first, and then the same releases will get put onto usenet. Scene releases are often on usenet first.

Usenet also has quite a lot of content that isn't on private trackers and people do use usenet as an upload source for trackers (mainly old films/foreign).

You can set sonarr/radarr up to use both usenet and trackers, and you can set a delay and what not. So it will try usenet first, and after awhile it will attempt to get it from the trackers.

  • Can I use this to receive news about Trump and Biden?

  • I remember when my ISP use to give free Usernet, still was too much hassle as was plenty of IRC bots.

    • Downloading a nzb and adding to a client is too much hassle?

      • This was 10 odd years ago, im sure clients are much easier now.

  • Can I ask what the source of this deal is?

I'm trying to "upgrade" from my existing plan but there's it doesn't seem to work and I need to open a ticket.

    • E-mail. I used to be a customer.

      • Thanks, emailed support and they were happy to adjust the plan, but they charged me up front (early) and extended my existing subscription out to 2022.

  • Anyone had any luck "upgrading their plan" with this code ?

    • just use a new email address

    • Yes, just email support here: https://support.newsgroup.ninja/new

They were happy to "upgrade" my plan but they had to charge me $30 to add another year to my existing subscription, they also pro-rated the existing remaining value out to mid 2022.
