Adguard is great and it pays for itself in minutes.

  • +10

I always look at. this deal and then see pihole(s) in my network are doing just fine, I hold myself off. I know it can be used in mobile as well so I can use this out of my network, but can't find a particular use case as Brave pretty much takes care of it

    • +1

Same but now running AdGuard Home on my NAS

      • How? I have synology hopefully same as yours

        • I'm running UNRAID on a regular PC. AdGuard runs as a Docker app and you access the interface from webpage or a companion app.
Synology may have an app for it

        • Thats the beauty of Docker, you don't need the same hardware at all :)

    • +6

I used to use Pihole, changed to equivalent (free) AdGuard Home and it's better.

This deal is worth it too for the local apps and ability to run it in conjunction with AdGuard VPN on Android.

      • +1

        Better in what sense?

        • +3

It's got cosmetic cleanup, for starters, so blank ad placeholders don't show up (it's similar to running uBlock Origin, in that sense).

          You can install userscripts.

Ability to run on any network, including mobile, travel SIMs (saves you data), guest wifi…

Super easy to set up for the whole family - just install and activate

        • Better UI. Lots of pre-configured filters to use.

I think it's more conifigurable from memory too, could be wrong though.

        • Had issues with PiHole on docker as the db would fill up and it would just stop responding. Got it configured so it was mostly stable on the Raspberry PI and the container config, there was unresolved issue logged around it (*couple of years ago). In the end jumped over to AdGuard Home and haven't looked back.

Running a couple of instances and using KeepAliveD for a virtual IP on local LAN. Haven't really solved the config synch (and there options), but once they are up and running its rare config is changed.

      • +1

I was running PiHole for a couple years and ended up moving to AdGuard Home.

Ive also found AdGuard Home to be much better.

    • For Android apps there's also Tracker Control.

It breaks some apps that rely on tracking too much, but it's easy enough to add exceptions.

  • +7

I've been thinking about Adguard for quite some time now. The place I work at has disallowed it as it was originally developed in Russia.

You can also use GUARD15 for the personal version with 3 licenses.

    • +1

I combine this app with NextDNS, so double protection ;-)

      • +1

Genuinely curious, what's the benefit of having both of these running?

  • +3

it's great, especially for swatting popups in dodgy parts of the internet. Handy for watching sports streams.
    The licences stack too.

    • swatting popups in dodgy parts of the internet

      Moooooo

  • With MV3 being introduced in Chrome browsers you will need AdGuard or DNS level blocking like NextDNS.

And make sure look up StackSocial codes you can probably get a extra 10%/20% off. Codes don't work on VPNs which is a shame.

    • +10

Or just use any other browser.

      • +4

To be clear though, most browsers are based on Chrome (Chromium actually), they are also impacted by the move to MV3 AFAIK?

I use Firefox everywhere, and Safari + Adguard on my mobile. Adguard works great. Including in apps.

      • This app blocks system wide, not only browser. Windows, Apple devices, and android devices have trackers too (block them with this app). There are other features too in the app.

        • +2

If blocking tracker then how about getting cashbacks?

          • @CyberMurning: Always disable this temporarily before opening cashback website. After finish shopping, enable it again. Easy, only 1 tap to enable/disable in android phone.

  • +3

You can also use their free dns (ads + tracking or family) from your router, or mobile with DoH.

  • +2

How much better is this vs regular adblock chrome extensions? Or is the value there because chrome is blocking adblock extensions now?

    • +6

Heaps better. And it blocks ads everywhere not just in Chrome/browser.

      • +1

Thank you! So it blocks ads across all other mobile apps like games etc? And random Q, does it also block google search ad links? I find that's usually the only useful type of ads but most DNS ad blocking I've used on mobile has blocked those too.

        • +3

No worries. Yes it blocks ads in most apps but not all. If the ads are served via the same DNS etc as an apps other content, it can't differentiate between the ads & the legit content, so those ads won't be blocked. They have workarounds for some of those apps such as Youtube, see my replies to RichardF89 & Borg below.

Yep it blocks Google search ads. You should be able to configure it not to though, it's highly customisable.

  • can I use this to block YouTube ads? I just purchased but don't know how to use it

    • No as the Ads on Youtube are on the same server as the Videos watched.

    • +11

Yes but it's clunky for that. You have to open a video in Youtube then tap Share and share it to the AdGuard app where it will play without ads.

AdGuard is great and well worth it but recommend Revanced on mobile or Smarttube on TV/TV box for Youtube.

      • Good to know & must give it a go (as a matter of interest only). Thought it didn't work based on other comments on Ozb (previous deals) so never tried that. Tks.

        • No worries. It definitely works and there's a support article about it on their website somewhere.

But as said it's clunky changing between apps each video so I use Revanced and Smarttube instead for that use case.

      • my TV is Samsung, the OS is its own. Is there any adblocker for it?

        • +1

This AdGuard adblocker app has an Android TV version. You could side-load it on your Samsung but I don't know if it would work or not.

If you use AdGuard's DNS servers on your TV or router that will work. Just go to the DNS settings and change it to 94.140.14.14. See https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

Edit: if it's just for Youtube side-load Smarttube app and use that instead.

          • @sav11: thanks, if I AdGuard's DNS servers on router, is this mean I can't use cashback?

            • @RichardF89: Yes it will block the trackers they use, so the cashback won't track. Also I just realised I was wrong above sorry, using AdGuard's DNS servers won't block ads in the Youtube app because they are served by the same DNS as other Youtube app content.

If you use the AdGuard adblocker apps on Windows &/or Android, in the settings you can turn off tracking protection for the device, or untick the options for "block trackers" and "remove tracking parameters from URL's", then cashback will work but ads & malware, phishing links etc will still be blocked. Or just turn AdGuard off temporarily with one click.

If your use case is Youtube on TV with no ads you have 3 options as I see it:
Use TizenTube per heef's recommendation (sounds like that is a Smarttube fork/equivalent for Samsung TV's Tizen OS).
Or buy a TV box such as NVIDIA Shield TV Pro & use Smarttube (IMO the best solution, easy to set up, disadvantage is cost but the Shield is sooo much better & faster than native smart TV OS's in every way so you get other benefits. & you can continue to use it with future TV's without having to set anything up again).
Or use Revanced or AdGuard adblocker app on your phone & cast it to the TV if you can.

              • @sav11: thanks sav11

              • @sav11: And could you please answer me another question? Is there any way to block ads for YouTube kids?

                • @RichardF89: The only way I know of is to use the AdGuard app but it's a bit clunky. In Youtube kids open a video, then tap/click Share, and share it to the AdGuard app where it will play with no ads.

Maybe in future Revanced will patch Youtube kids app, or Smarttube devs will make a Smarttube kids app, but IDK if they have plans to do that or not.

        • +1

TizenTube. it isn't the easiest to set up, you have to put your tv in dev mode, sideload it, then turn off dev mode, but it ads ad-blocking and sponsorblock to YouTube and works wonderfully.

    • +1

It can block YouTube ads on web browsers only, not the Youtube app. For me, it works on my MacBook, iPhone, Android phone. For Android phone, it's better to use Revanced.

      • what is Revanced?

      • Use Brave Browser to block YouTube ads

        • I prefer to watch youtube in app

    • Maybe just use Brave browsers if u r mostly use PC.

      • I use Brave on mobile for ad free YouTube. As a bonus you can run it in the background (premium YT functionality) via picture-in-picture.

  • +7

The best app I've ever bought. One of the biggest reasons I have not been able to switch back to iOS (Android implementation is always going to be better).

My favourite feature of late: running custom user scripts. So I've essentially got Bypass Paywall (Clean) running everywhere, including Chrome.

    • +2

      That sounds really helpful.

Thanks for the lead. Ive got it working now and its working great! Can finally view afr again since it stopped working with 12ftio

      • Mind sharing how you got it working? I haven't been able to find it.

      • Are you able to please share any links to a guide to making bypass paywall work via adguard? Thanks in advance.

        • +2

Don't have any guide or anything but it's easy enough to work out.

          Check out https://gitflic.ru/project/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-clea…

          • @sund00bie: Can you run this script (or any other scripts) on the iPhone app? I'm having trouble working it out

            • @carpecrash: Ok so I installed "Stay" on my iPhone and copied this script and now paywall bypass is working in Safari! ic.ru/project/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-clean-filters/blob/raw?file=userscript/bpc.en.user.js

Can't see a way to get it working in Chrome on my iPhone though:

              • @carpecrash: Added the url to my filter list on adguard. Paywalls still seem to come up on chrome and Samsung internet.

      • I installed the userscript and custom filters as per the link for bypass paywalls, but AFR/Theage still not working. On android/chrome. Any tips? Thanks
Edit: the only thing I didn't enable is https filtering, would that be required?

    • +2

I have Bypass Paywalls (Clean) working in iOS (Safari) with AdGuard + Userscripts so it’s not just limited to Android.

      • @L45er How did you get this working?? Will it only work in Safari and not Chrome on iOS?

      • would love to get Bypass to work on Safari iOS. Then I'd use my iPad way more…

  • Been using AdGaurd for years, highly recommended!

  • Is this just a DNS blocker, like NextDNS? or a separate chrome extension or something?

    • +4

Both services protect you at the DNS level but are designed with slightly different audiences and priorities in mind:

TL;DR: if you’re after advanced, granular control with detailed logs and custom settings, NextDNS is a great choice. If you prefer a family-friendly, all-in-one solution that’s easy to deploy across many devices, AdGuard Family Plan might suit you better.

      • NextDNS
        • A cloud‐based DNS service that emphasizes granular control and advanced customization.
        • You can fine‐tune block/allow lists, view detailed analytics, and set device‐specific rules.
        • It offers free and paid tiers—with usage limits on the free plan—making it popular among power users who want extensive control over privacy and ad blocking.

      • AdGuard Family Plan
        • Part of AdGuard’s suite aimed at home and family use, the Family Plan bundles ad blocking (and sometimes additional features like parental controls) for multiple devices under one subscription.
        • It’s designed to be easy to set up and manage for families, covering a set number of devices (often up to nine) with a straightforward pricing model (sometimes even as a lifetime subscription).
        • While it still offers customization, its focus is on simplicity and comprehensive protection across a family’s devices rather than deep technical configuration.

      • Both will protect you inside your home (wifi) and outside your home (on cellular).

        • +1

This is exactly the sort of thing Kim would say

      • +6

        Thank you ChatGPT

    • Adguard app has many more features, not only DNS blocker. I combine this app with NextDNS, so double protection ;-)

  • +1

Will this stop Ozbargain generate ad revenue?

  • +6

Just change your DNS settings to 94.140.15.15.

    DNS.adguard.com

    Job done.

    • What is this in relation to??

      • +1

Blocks ads on any device you configure it on. Or configure it on your router to block all ads across your wifi network

        • Only blocks ads via DNS. The Adguard app can also do MITM for HTTPS traffic.

          • @ldd-mn: Pretty much everything is via DNS… Https is irrelevant. Only thing that gets around DNS is things that go direct to IP or via HOSTS file or hardcoded. All those methods are bad design practices.

        • Cheers

    • +1

Not all can be blocked through DNS, especially with that basic Adguard DNS. Adguard app especially in android is much more powerful than just Adguard DNS. Btw, I combine Adguard app with NextDNS (double protection).

Previously this website can show us how many and anything that can be blocked or not by adblocker, but this web is not maintained anymore …
      https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock

The website above was able to show that Adguard DNS especially 94.140.15.15 cannot block 100%. Combine DNS level blocking with Adguard app is much better.

    • +2

Won't it block tracking of your cash back?

      • @bob19 Yes, and most ad-blockers in your browser will too. If you need the cashback, you'll need to set up some exceptions.

        • Thank you

    • Don't just change your DNS to what someone tells you to change it to without a really good explanation and a clear list of what has been done to it.

Someone compromising your DNS server can put you at great risk.

I've never heard of AdGuard until I came in here to post "huh? Why would you pay for this when you can use uBlock Origin in Firefox" and seeing advice like this without further explanation or disclaimers is scary.

  • This is great, I hardly see ads especially in those dodgy apps that like to spam you with ads.

  • +1

No guarantee this will last forever. Could be a few weeks before it doesn't work anymore.

    • While that's true, I bought it in 2021 and it's still running fine today.

That could be true of any app service, something like NordVPN could shut down tomorrow with no warning.

    • Not few weeks, but could be years … Until the app is not supported or can not run or be opened anymore in android/windows/apple devices.

If the company or its service disappears, we can still use the app and just change the DNS. I combine the app with NextDNS for DNS. So, double protection.

  • This vs pihole?

I wasn't able to set up a pihole using my zero W

    • Should be possible. I’ve set it up before using the OG pi zero

    • The free AdGuard Home is equivalent to Pihole but better.

The AdGuard license/adblocker apps in this post give you more features and more granular control at the device level, than either Pihole or AdGuard Home.

I use both AdGuard Home and AdGuard adblocker apps together and it's great.
