Thanks OP, this was sweeter though, I'm keeping my eyes on that

    • What’s the difference?

  • How is this compared to the one built within Asus routers?

    • +2

I presume the asus router option will be like pihole
So it works on your network
Whereas this works with the app so its device specific
And this option gives the user less options on what to block

      • Nope you are talking about AdGuard home, which is a self-hosted application

    • iirc the one built into Asus router is a client and this is the subscription service for that client. Free tier gets 300k requests per month (I exhausted the quota in 3days)

      Edit: it’s actually AdGuard dns

  • +1

    Max number of devices: 9

Hardly a 'family' plan then… I use 5 devices just for myself.

    • +6

It might be if you weren't so greedy and let your family members use your devices.

      • +1

let your family members use your devices.

        They have their own devices.

        • +1

          Their own 5 devices each?

    • +8

Why didn’t you bold family though?

    • Do you use more than one router? If not, just setup your router with Adguard.

      • setup your router with Adguard.

How do I do that on a Google nest router?

  • +1

I've been using adblock / uorigin for years and i've noticed quite a few sites limit access when it detects you have adblock installed (and asks you to disable it).

Is it the same story with AdGuard?

    • +2

I've used Adguard for about 2 years and have only had a small handful of sites ask me to disable. I think this is just a universal problem with ad blockers.

I've also had to whitelist a couple of sites because they wouldn't behave properly with Adguard running. Sites like EB Games, Streamotion (Binge/Kayo), Catch and NRL.

The beauty of Adguard is you can whitelist specific pages or mobile apps. Things like Cashrewards also need it disabled.

      • +1

Some applications / web sites require a specific DNS to be resolvable. By design they have made it difficult to configure youre way around this. Cashrewards as an example it has a couple of config items to attempt to make it work, but its unreliable. So the simplest option is to disable it (pause for 10min on Adguard Home), do your transaction and resume.

Curious what the streamotion one is as it works fine on all but Samsung Tizen OS devices in my situation without needing to disable it.

        • +1

Streaming isn't a problem, but the account page won't load with Adguard running. Just a recent example in could think of.

      • They use JavaScript to detect your adblocking setup. Not sure if that's something you can easily prevent

I have had horrible experiences with Stacksocial, zero customer support and the products often either disappear or stop working

    • I was hoping I'd see a comment around the customer service, I'll just stick with the free ones then.

      • I've never had any issues with them

    • +1

Interesting considering I had the exact opposite. I purchased this deal the last post and made a mistake on checkout (missed the coupon code). They contacted me within 24 hours after I explained this to the support who refunded my account within 3 days of the difference. Definitely a good experience.

    • Get in touch with them, and they'll direct you to the seller. It took over a month for me to receive a refund. On another occasion, I opted for account credit from Stacksocial. In the past 10 years, I've made three purchases. Not the best.

  • +1

Good of them to reach out and offer a better deal! I've expired the old one I posted.

  • Do I need a raspberry Pi for this? I had a little look at it the other day and put it in the too hard basket!

    • No

    • No raspberry pi required, just a phone app. But RPi is a good tool to enable whole home network ad blocking. Can be done directly on most routers via DNS settings but an RPi would allow for custom rules etc.

  • -1

Can this filter out ads on Netflix?

    • no

    • Only if the domain is ads.netfix.com

    • try contacting their support

  • +2

I have PiHole installed on a RasPi, how is this better/different?

    • -4

      Covered in comments

    • No holes with this one. No dedicated hardware lifetime and it's portable out of home still works. No setup PiHole and shit

  • -1

Does this filter out YouTube ads on TV/phone?

    • Not natively through the YouTube app. You'd have to open the video in YouTube and share to Adguard which has its own player. Apparently watching in a browser can block ads too.

  • Wonder why my AdGuard can’t even block advertisements from news.com.au

    • +16

It's because you should never be browsing news.com.au

    • +6

      news.com.au

My go to site to make sure my ad block system is in order.

      • That site is like night and day with or without ads.

        Horrendous ads at that.

    • I have a similar issue with news.com.au, I got a pop up that until i disable my adblocker I can not access the site.

I refuse to disable my adblocker for that site!

I disabled javascript via site settings in chrome and viola the site works-ish, well at least no pop up or ads.

      • check in filter settings, there are some filters called anti-ad block which likely will help you get rid of the popup

        • Doesn’t work. Anyone got other work around?

          • @Klang: Vivaldi browser and uBlock Origin has always worked for me. I know it's a slightly weird browser choice but I use multiple platforms and don't want work/persoanl mixed up and I've found that this combo just works my standard 8 sites I check every morning.

Used AdGuard years ago, will have another look - presumably it's easy enough to block for cash rewards sites etc. I saved over $5k with those over the years and keep a dedicated browser just for purchases of that ilk. It helps that I work 90% from home and with 3 monitors…

    • check the filters selected and update them.

    • +1

I'm surprised it's not nwes.com.au given how many spelling errors I see in every article.

  • Does this stop ads within kids apps?

    • -2

"kids apps" - could you be any vaguer?

      • games, barbie, free apps, you know ..

  • I prefer running my own PiHole on the cloud. Fully control and have (theoretically) unlimited users/devices.

    • Interesting, did you use any specific instructions/guides to get that going?

      • I did years ago so I could not recall the instructions to follow. But you can search like Pihole on Oracle Cloud Free Tier.

        • Free for life or 1 year?

      • Please don’t unless you know what you are doing. https://www.cloudflare.com/en-au/learning/ddos/dns-amplifica… Just use NextDNS - they run the DNS server for you, with you desired adlists - which does the same thing securely (and free). Many guides online.

    • only works at home, when out and about …

      • install the adguard app on your phone and enable the filtering vpn

        • I wish there was a way to run this on iPhone without the vpn. I have work mandated av installed and it can’t run both.

    • you can self host adguard for free as well the same way: https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardHome

      • the whole point is not to self host…..20 bucks to let someone host instead its fine unless you are picky on your browsing i guess and privacy

  • Thanks. For anyone in the same situation as me, I was able to add this subscription to my existing AdGuard account where I only had a VPN license (which I also purchased from StackSocial).

  • The "ADBLOCK" code is only bringing my final price for the bundle down to $44.99. How do I get the extra $5 off?

    • make sure you only have 1 qty of the family plan in your cart and should be using ozbargain13 as the code.

    • Use "ozbargain13" - the code in this deal

      • Thanks @HeyPapito and @DrDuck but that's for the headline deal. I'm talking about the bundle deal mentioned in the description it says "use code: ADBLOCK"

    • +1

I'll ask StackSocial if there is an issue and let you know if I get a reply.

    • Give it a go now, they replied a couple of hours ago:

I also wanted to update you that our team has fixed the coupon code ADBLOCK, so you should now see the AdGuard bundle deal available at the $39.97 pre-tax price I mentioned

  • Will this block ads in apps in iPad? I use manga reading apps and want to get rid ads in between reading chapters :(

    • i have the same question

  • Seems using a random US address will save the 10% GST
Purchased with $13 and paid via Wise card

  • +9

use code HUKDFAMILY to bring it down to US11

    • This code not working anymore

  • Funny itself is an ad

  • How does it compare to using the various DNS blocklists maintained by Hagezi?
    https://github.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists

    • That's just a list of "bad" domains? there is a chance that Adguard uses the lists.

  • The android app used to be extremely effective. Except for YouTube, most apps and browsing was well filtered. However recently the app has been killing battery life, a known issue over the last few months with the adguard team but for some reason every update fails to fix the issue. Something to keep in mind.

  • FYI anyone can use their DNS and the browser extensions are free so you’re not really buying much if anything.

    • I think you get more control, not sure about this.

  • Hi, Does it include the AdGuard VPN ?

    • +1

You get free VPN 3+1(verification bonus)=4GB per month.
You can also buy unlimited VPN.

Note that in Android phones, you can only have one VPN by default, and AdGaurd VPN works out of box- otherwise, you need to set up a proxy yourself.

At this price, I am tempted to get another subscription- but I don't install it on all my devices . I would not trust a Russian company with root certificate on my android smartphone esp when dealing with trading cryptocurrency - it can decrypt the https traffic and inspect the contents- just saying.

  • Does it block fb ads on ios?

  • +1

I'm a bit confused, what does this offer, besides the vpn, have that isn't already available with the free Adguard DNS? Is it the parental control? Or actually better adblocking (eg. Youtube ads?)

    On their websites:

    • This family plan has "an advanced ad-blocking module, a comprehensive privacy protection tool, and a robust parental control system"
    • While the Adguard DNS "blocks ads, trackers, and malicious domains"

So it looks the same, help?

  • Cannot run together with 3rd party vpn (express vpn etc). Will try to get a refund if not, will see it as a loss… :(

    • You can, it is just a bit of additional work.
      Set up a proxy.
Search the Adblock site for instructions.

  • Following

  • I want to know about how adblocking sites which detects you are using adblockers. Like reverse and make those sites you view unable to detect you are using adblockers

  • many unanswered questions

  • Bought during last deal. Not sure what is the purpose of this Adblock … can’t even block advertisements on smh or news

    • so its useless? or you didnt set it up properly? whats involved in the setup?

  • Hi guys does this include VPN?

  • Anyone got the instructions after you purchase it? I clicked redeemed code, started following the steps, went back to the page and the steps disappeared and I can't press redeem code again

    • You better contact customer service then. This is the reason to copy the code beforehand or open a new tab

  • Who prefers this to NextDNS or a Pihole setup?

  • Anyone else having issues using Adguard mobile? Websites and apps not loading on the phone anymore until i switch off Adguard. It's almost as if the phone cannot access the internet based on some of the error messages in the apps.

    • Upon further testing, this issue only occurs when I'm on wifi.
