whatever that means.

Personal license is also available for US$9.97 (regular is $79.99), but why would you go with Personal?

On a side note, I have 2 Pi-holes in my home network for many years (and happy with them), but want to try AdGuard if it really makes a big difference. Talk me out of it :)

    Pihole+brave?

    • +3

Pihole + DuckDuckGo for me :)

I switched from DDG to Brave a few months ago after years searching with DDG. I got sick of it ignoring search terms. Would click one of the results and did a search for the search term and it wasn’t there. DDG (Bing) has an algo that thinks it knows what you are after but I was frustrated so often that I would be getting crap results. Switching to Google worked really well in those cases, like night and day. Anyway I find Brave search to be pretty decent, I suppose the only thing is it doesn’t always give me Australian regional results and I need to put in “Australia” in the search. The AI widget is handy sometimes too.

        • +1

Put double quotes around absolute search terms

But why I’m now thinking about AdGuard: YouTube app recently updated on Apple TV and there’s now a shitload of ads. Previously I somehow magically was watching YouTube with no premium account and no ads, but not after recent update of app. Google somehow managed to finally sneak into :(

      • wonder how this handles twitch ads

          • +7

@olderman: After Google did an update to stop it AdGuard did an update to get around it again. But now you have to open the video in YouTube then share it to AdGuard and watch it in the AdGuard app with no ads. So it works but is clunky compared to before the updates.

Best thing for free YouTube Premium is Revanced and Revanced Music. Brilliant.

        • I used to sideload twitch on iOS. After Adguard premium, and importing the same Adblock list from NextDNS, I no longer get ads on the official twitch app. Not complaining but strange not having ads with just regular adblocker.

      • +5

I went from Pihole to AdGuard Home on my NAS and AdGuard app + AdGuard VPN on client devices, and I'm happy (StackSocial has AdGuard VPN 5 years 10 devices for $34.97, and you can stack them. It says new users but works with existing accounts. It also gives you their premium DNS service for free while you have a VPN subscription).

An Android limitation is you can only run 1 VPN at a time. Security apps like AdGuard work by creating a local VPN, so you cant also run a VPN for your internet traffic at the same time. But AdGuard has managed to code their apps so you can run AdGuard + AdGuard VPN in integration mode concurrently on Android.

For YouTube try Revanced and Revanced Music. Free YouTube Premium they work flawlessly.

      • +2

Another way is using VPN with certain servers to watch YouTube no ads, no premium account needed ;-)

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/880322

Currently NordVPN 98% cashback through Topcashback or 100% cashback through Shopback. Usually 1 day for Shopback tracking confirmation, but better choose Topcashback for VPN purchase (faster tracking confirmation).

    • AdAway+Brave

  • Does this take out the ads from the Facebook (like the ones that come up when you're watching videos) and Instagram app?

    • Nope

    • +3

For that if on Android, patch Instagram with reVanced

  • +9

I don't see how this would be better than running a pi-hole or AdGuard home. Not a big fan of running extra software on-device unnecessarily.

I'm running AdGuard Home on my Opnsense firewall, plus ublock or brave adblock. I basically never see ads.

    • +8

For the non tech savvy who can't setup pihole and reconfigure network devices/ router DNS settings.

    • +1

I use Adguard on my iPhone as I got it on a deal like this a few years ago. It’s been great. What you say is true. But when you go out on 4/5G, the VPN ad blocking kicks in and then no ads in your browser or apps. I hate ads so this is awesome stuff. I did my own ad blocking at home with squidGuard a number of years ago but let that go by the wayside now because Adguard on mobiles plus uBlock on all laptop/PC browsers does the job. Windows is an issue with all its telemetry and ads so I use Linux where I can and otherwise tweak Windows with O&O Shutup10.

    • It's pretty good when on not on the home wifi and you don't need to vpn home to get the blocking.

Also can block certain apps and allow others.

      • +1

For this, on mobile, I have a free NextDNS account that I set as my "private DNS" (DNS over TLS/HTTPS server). It does have a query cap but I never hit it.

Blocks ads and avoids carrier DNS servers on the go, no extra app required.

    • +1

I like that's it's easy to toggle on and off quickly if you want to use cash rewards etc.

      • the same could be said of pihole, but yep this looks like a good solution for those who are understandably not interested in messing around with setting that up themselves.

  • -3

Some pretty bad reviews for social stack, guessing this is a bit of a gamble in how long it lasts?

    • +2

I don’t use it all the time, but I feel like my license must be between 5 and 10 years old at this point and still going fine.

    • Did a bit of a review above. I love it and have it running on a few mobiles.

    • Mine reads as a lifetime code within AdGuard itself.

Obviously lifetime is never lifetime but unless stack social can somehow make codes/licenses remove from accounts it seems to be more on AdGuard honouring than stacksocial in this case.

      • +1

Imagine everyone paid for the lifetime subscription, the company would have no income in the future years. Guess what? Your data is. Since you set up adguard for the whole home, I can't 100% trust them yet.

        • +2

The same could be said about AdGuard Home which they provide for free.

They get ongoing/future revenue via VPN and premium DNS subscriptions which don't have lifetime options.

AdGuard have been around quite a few years now with a good track record. They have a good privacy policy too; not sure what you mean by "your data is" but AdGuard don't sell or share users data which is explicitly stated in their policies.

You never know but I personally view AdGuard as a reasonably safe bet. And for the price it's a no-brainer IMO.

          • @sav11: Do they save user's data? I use adguard add-on version for some devices but not whole home. Yep lifetime for the whole family is a no brainer.

            • +1

@bcYield: Sorry, I can't remember whether they save users data or not.

  • You can change your tv dns to adguard for free. I also use YouTube ad free for webos lol

    • Do you mean setting adguard DNS on the TV's network settings will get you ad-free Youtube on WebOS?

      • +1

There are free open source YouTube frontend without ads, quick search will being them up.

  • can this work get rid of the ads on netflix?

    • No

      • I'd imagine that it wouldn't get rid of ads on Prime either?

        • +1

Only if the ads come from a domain that the content doesn't, if the domain is ads . prime. com, this means it could be blocked but if the it all comes from content . prime . com then no.

  • +2

oh i got this and forgot about it lol. thanks for the reminder - time to set it up now

  • +2

unlock Origin, Firefox/Brave & Quad 9 DNS within the browsers/phones. Also Newpipe (yt player & downloader) on phones

I have not seen utube ads, I can't vouch for fb or twitch as I'm not using those

  • +1

I use this on my phone and PC. I also use PiHole at home. It's actually pretty decent. especially if you spend the time with apps and make sure they're blocking ads correctly. I get no ads in most apps using this but it does still struggle with ads served from the same domain as the site (eg Facebook) but that's a limitation on most ad blockers. For this price it's worth it, if you're on the fence (imo).

  • -4

Will this block ads on Netflix?

  • +4

Just enter this provider hostname in your phone's settings:
    Network -> Private DNS -> dns.adguard.com

Note should turn off when not wanted, like for cashbacks.

uBlock Origin extension blocks everything on Chrome PC (I use IBA Opt-out (by Google) as well i think)

    • +1

Certain ads can still slip through the Adguard DNS as it's only DNS based blocking. Adguard app is better and have a lot more features and advantages that the DNS cannot do. I combine Adguard app + NextDNS for the DNS in the app = double protection. Even more with Adguard VPN (free is still enough for me).

      • Ah ok. I may have a look but free sounds fine.
Just don't need more apps running in the background vs a quick fix. It blocks most.

        • +2

Not all apps need to run all day in the background such as bank apps, shopping apps, games, etc. Opening Uber Eats app will trigger Uber app, same with Amazon Music will trigger Amazon app to run. I use Hibernator app to stop certain apps from running all day in the background.

Adguard app has firewall feature that can block certain apps that we don't want to have access to Internet. I block certain file manager app, photo editing app, etc. from having access to Internet as not all apps need Internet access (safety concern). Also this can save more battery and data.

        • +2

          Also try this:
          https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock

See if yours can reach at least 99% or even perfect 💯% ;-)
This is one of the limitation of DNS based blocking.

NextDNS has many more features and filters in its setting after login, but cannot use Private DNS feature in android settings. So, need the NextDNS app or can put its specialised DNS in the Adguard app (double protection). NextDNS can reach 99% from test link above.

uBlock Origin extension in browsers can reach 99%/100% but it doesn't protect systemwide (only browsers).

          • +1

@neoleo: I second NextDNS, it even has a free offering which I find is enough for one device. It works on my Android phone using the Private DNS feature.

            • @Flapjack Fire: How do you put your specialised NextDNS in Private DNS in android? I tried, but cannot save my specific NextDNS.

Either I put it in Adguard app in DNS setting, or use NextDNS app.

I use free account for NextDNS too as personal use is still more than enough for me.

              • @neoleo: Using the DNS-over-TLS/QUIC FQDN should work. Should look like: xxxx.DNS.nextdns.io

DNS-over-HTTPS or Linked IP will not work.

  • How to work this in with tailscale?

  • +1

    Genuine question here,

I use Adguard safari extension on my devices (iPhone/Tablet), also have it installed on Mac and it works fine.

I have home assistant and know that Adguard Home can be setup fairly easily as a add-on to block ads at a DNS level (just need to carve out some time to set it up).

What do these paid/family plans offer that the above doesn't?

  • Got interest in Pi-Hole. Which hardware are you guys running it on?

    • +2

Raspberry Pi is one of the most common options.
Install Home Assistant and you can run Adguard home as an add on.
Or run a Linux server and run pi hole in a docker container.

      • Thanks. Would any Raspberry pi model would handle it?

        • +2

Pi 4 A or B would be enough, if you're going to buy one, I'd recommand you look at i5 micro pcs for near the same price.

          • @Tollery: Larger form factor withHigher power consumption though greater power and versatility

            • @abadacus: That is true, 5-20w vs 65-100w however you can host more then DNS on a micro.

    • I run mine on an orange pi zero 3

  • Bought it and can't redeem it when following the steps outlined.

    • Which step fails?

I've bought a bunch of stuff from StackSocial including this and haven't had a problem.

Once you have the code you can just create an AdGuard account then enter the code in account settings to redeem it.

      • I got there eventually thanks. There were a few different apps I downloaded, but once I worked out the right one, I was able to follow the steps.

  • +2

Bought this on the last deal. Really useful to test the ad block on something like this site https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock and add your own DNS blocklists from here https://github.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists. I pair it with ublock origin for android/windows browsers and safari add on for IOS. Use brave browser for youtube.

Don't see ads anymore and it's wonderful. It's also creepy how much free apps track you like snapchat.

    • My score is 96% with only 6 not blocked I am using control-d

      • Using AdGuard I score 99% with only 1 getting through: ads.js.

  • What is the advantage of the paid version comparing with the free version?

    • +2

More features like firewall, more proactive ads & trackers blocking, more advanced privacy features, more filters, even can choose many different DNS or add more DNS servers like NextDNS (double protection).

      Try this:
      https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock

See if yours can reach at least 99% or even 100%. Adguard app has more proactive ads, trackers, app blocking (firewall). Free Adguard DNS based blocking has more limitations.

      • Thanks mate

  • Re revanced, going to need it soon as YT India hack will stop for my YT music and YT in a few days 🫤… Don't really wanna hack my galaxy mobile. Is it easy? Best guide the Reddit one? Thnx

    • as YT India hack will stop for my YT music and YT in a few days

If you have access to an Apple device, using an Indian Apple account and Indian prepaid Apple cards from Amazon India works still.

Don't really wanna hack my galaxy mobile

Installing APKs isn't "hacking it". It's turning on a setting. But make sure you're installing APKs from trusted sources.

      • Ok thanks , have an old iPad but hardly use. You think the Apple hack better /easier than revanced option?
Trusted source..? examples pls, i wouldn't know as never touched APKs

        • an old iPad but hardly use. You think the Apple hack better

The Apple method will continue to function exactly as it does now. Details here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879559

Trusted source..? examples pls, i wouldn't know as never touched APKs

The offical Revanced download. Have used it (or Android) in years so not sure of the link.

        • I have iPad 9. When I want to watch YouTube in my iPad, I just turn on VPN with certain countries like Albania for example. No ads in YouTube app or even in browser.

Anyone can buy NordVPN with cashback like 98% from Topcashback at the moment or even 100% with Shopback (if tracked). Better use Topcashback for VPN purchase.

I changed over to this from Pihole recently, ultimately became easier to use for all the devices and mobility in my house.

There are a few things that don't work so well, but found this has been a lot more reliable in blocking all the pop up ads on the kids android tablet trash games.

  • I searched "which adblock could block ads on crucnhyroll" and people said "don't watch if you can't pay for the subscription or just watch the ads". Trying brave and it works again without the ads. lol. I guess I save some money.
