Not sold, as I don't see any AI wording in description 😜

Does this Block Ads on www.Ozbargain.com.au?

      • It does!

        • +1

inb4 the ozbargain fanbois say "Oh i leave my ads enabled on ozbargain!"

          • @bohn: I would agree with them and enable adblock mate! No argue.

  • +4

does this block ads on android games?

    • +5

Yes it does. We have this from a previous deal.

      • Don't you need root for that ?

        • Nope.

      • How? It's asking me to select either Yandex or Samsung browser. Do I install one of these and proceed to use it for blocking ads in games?

          • +5

@SiliconBased: Thanks for the reply but the answer is to not install it via Play Store but instead download the apk from AdGuard site, install and use it that way.

            • @sridhar: You have to use the same login across all 9 devices or different people can use their own logins in family plan?

    • +3

In my experience, yes it's great for blocking ads in games. This can cause problems for those games where you have to watch an ad to get some sort of currency, but I usually avoid rubbish like that. You can also whitelist certain apps to allow ads, if you want.

It doesn't work for all Android apps though. Apps like imdb and Reddit must have some way of bypassing ad blockers.

      • +2

Thanks, @Trojan and @Munkeyalan! I just want to block the ads on my kids' tablet since the games they plan often show inappropriate games or app ads for their age.

        • Yep I do the same for my kids. You can also set custom firewall settings for each app, which is good for blocking online access for games with real money stores.

      • Try out RedReader instead of the Reddit app. It's free, it is SIGNIFICANTLY less visually polluted, and you won't see a single ad.

        • -1

You just need to be a mod to mmmm.. view certain stuff. So create your very own sub.

      • the reason imdb/others 'bypass' it is the ads are fed through the same host as the other content… cannot be blocked

    • Just use adguard DNS no root needed

  • +5

get a cheap router and run pihole on it..

      • PiHole doesn't work outside your house.

NextDNS is like PiHole, but works inside and outside of your house.

        • +4

PiHole doesn't work outside your house.

it does when you use a VPN

        • +1

Just use adguard DNS no root needed

        • Surely anyone running PiHole also runs a WireGuard server so they can access their self-hosted services while on the go?

Route internet through that, and PiHole works everywhere.

    • +1

Can you link to an easy to use guide?

      • If you don't know how to set it up, use NextDNS which is close enough.

    • -6

PSA: Don't bother with pihole unless you already have a raspberry pi. Even then I found it pretty useless, as it uses an ip-based adblocking method, which 90% of the websites I browse are smart enough to avoid. Doesn't block youtube ads etc.

      • Doesn't block youtube ads etc.

That's because their ads are served from the same servers that serve videos.

Blocking YouTube ads means blocking YouTube

        • +1

That's right. For that reason, I found content-level adblockers like the one on this deal much better.

        • +9

ReVanced youtube for mobile / tablets and SmartTube for TVs does the job just fine. No ads forever on YouTube

          • +2

@dealmaker: Plus Sponsorblock and Dearrow available natively through both! The more control we remove from video uploaders, the better.

          • @dealmaker: how to install smarttube on lg oled tv's ?

            • @Ryxxi: Need android and sideload it (if that is possible). I just use mibox and a dumb tv.
With mibox, just remember to not update it to the latest os version as that seems to disable sideloading for some reason.

        • Tried Brave browser ?

      • Skill issue

        • -1

Please explain the skill you seem to have with which you can get pihole to block YouTube ads.

      • Works fine. Running Pi-hole on Docker on Ubuntu with zero issues.

        • +1

Managed it to get youtube ads blocked network-wide?

          • +1

@afayd: It's not that kind of adblock

            • +1

@ihfree: And that's what I want people to be aware of. Previously, it was able to. Now it can't because YouTube circumvents it.

              • +1

@afayd: You've made the claim of 90% you browse. What other websites does Pi-hole have issues with?

                • +2

@ihfree: Dailymotion, nytimes, soccer highlights websites such as hoofoot, etc. off the top of my head. I don’t keep a running list.

                  • +1

@afayd: Ahh ok, that makes more sense - the issue you're experiencing is more for streaming sites. If companies are serving ads from the same domain as content, then a DNS based blocker is not going to work.

    • Better to use a raspberry pi zero w instead.

  • +5

Pretty good timing since Google Chrome is phasing out Manifest V2

    • -6

      Brave does it for free

      • +3

This is system wide. Not just your browser.

      • until chromium drops mv2 support altogether

    • +3

Chrome will surely lose a fair amount of their market share with this move.

      • I wish Chrome lost some marketshare but who is there to take them on now? Firefox is dropping lower each year. Edge is garbage and is Chromium on the inside anyway. Safari has a tight hold on iPhones but not on the desktop.

      • +2

you'd think, but the amount of people who use adblockers in general is also disappointingly small. if anything, the added security that mv3 also offers will probably make chrome better in the longrun for non-adblocking-people.

        • I don’t want to go back to the days of around 2000 when ads, pop-ups and redirects made browsing much of the web impossible.

    • You'll need to use Firefox instead what well chrome drop manifest V2. Firefox will be dropping it too but apparently still supporting ad blockers and extension
      .

  • +17

@beatthatflight: I just noticed if you subscribe to their mailing list, you'll get 15% off first purchase, so it brings it down to $16.13
EDIT: just found a code from 'Honey'. Use 'TAKE20' to get 20% off.

  • +1

YouTube bypass or automatically turn off my adblock, anyone knows how to fix this ?

    • +2

DNS-based ad blocking does not work on YouTube as the ads are served from the same domains as their videos

    • +4

Use Brave browser (adblocker built-in) or Firefox browser with ublock origin extension for YouTube. You can play YouTube in the background while using other apps for example.

Adguard app has YouTube blocking feature, but I don't use it.

      • How can I do that / block ads on Google TV?

        • Maybe try to install SmarTube on your Google TV.

Some people mentioned in reddit about using VPN. Try Albania, Moldova, Romania. I am currently trying this method using my NordVPN account. I need more time to confirm this method.

  • +3

How is this better than the free adguard dns?

    • +1

I find it better because it's customisable on a per-app basis. I can block ads on one app but allow exceptions for apps like Cashrewards that have issues with ad blockers.

If that's not worth the money to you then just stick with the dns.

I also find that the app blocks ads more seamlessly - I don't get as many empty boxes where ads would have been. That might be coincidence, though.

      • interesting, was looking into adguard recently and didn’t think about the network wide blocking affecting cashback. Thanks

      • Have you tried it with Spotify?

        • I have Spotify premium so I have no idea if it works. Maybe test it with the free adguard public dns.

          • @Munkeyalan: How about youtube music

            • @easternculture: i just installed the revanced patch for yt, yt music and soundcloud on my android and works perfectly. they have one for spotify too. adguard dns for everything else is almost perfect and can just turn it off briefly while shopping if i want cashback tracking to work.

    • because the app is customisable to block additional things ("sign in with google", cookie, other pop ups.etc) whitelist, and all.sorts of things

    • +1

or you could try Nextdns free plan. It has access to all the features limited to 300,000 queries/month.

Just use a different email to sign up for an account for each single one of your devices. For mobile devices, 300,000 queries/month should be enough.

  • The worst website for ads and popups is advertising an adblocker, wow

    • +1

      Is Brave an operating system?

      /s

      • -5

Oh and adguard is? Muppets in space.

        • +3

No, but it installs in OS and blocks ads network wide. I use brave as well. Brave plus this is awesome.

    • +1

Very brave of you to say that.

    • +3

Yeah, Brave only blocks ads on the browser but for many people, this is where they get lots of ads.

I think its only fair to raise awareness that you should probably only be paying for this if youre trying to get rid of ads in other apps.

It would suck for Ozbargainers to buy this, only to realize that a free option did 99%, which then hardly makes it a deal for them.

      • I wonder if this version of adguard block ads inside facebook app on iOS. That would be awesome

  • I have been using this for a while in my android, it's pretty good. However I didn't know it has parental control? Where is that configured? Can't find anything about it in the app

    • +1

Maybe login Adguard DNS website and configure the Adguard DNS. I haven't tried to configure Adguard DNS. But I combine Adguard app with NextDNS. I can configure NextNDS after login NextDNS website. There's parental control in NextDNS.

  • +12

Use TAKE20 for extra 20% off.

Long time NextDNS user switched to Adguard earlier this week. So far, I like it.
NextDNS free tier offers 300k queries a month but you quickly go through them.

This is unlimited as it runs on your phone. Setting rules is per device but it is faster and blocks all ads and trackers (depending on your blocklists and allowlists rules) without breaking.

    • I was thinking of buying their DNS service $us24/5yr to cover whole network

    • I found it's cheaper to paid NextDNS via Turkey, one year TRY499.00 ~= $22 AUD
I used that DNS-over-TLS on my Oppo Find X2 Pro and sometimes the web resolve slower than not enabling it, thinking to stop paying and use other services

      • NextDNS is free for personal use (up to 300k queries). More than enough for personal use. I don't pay for it. Same with Adguard DNS (login) is free for personal use (up to 300k queries). But I think NextDNS is more user friendly, more filters and has other features.

  • +3

    using TAKE20 = $us15.18

  • Anyone have a tax of $1.52 added to their order?

    • Yeah, tax applied after I clicked pay on PayPal

    • +1

Some states in US doesn't have sales tax. An address is all you need.

      • +1

I hear Alaska is nice this time of year. 😉

  • +4

been running it on my phone 24/7 for the past few years, wouldnt go back to a phone without it installed.
blocks ads and trackers os wide, some apps you may have to whitelist in settings to not break it.

    • +1

      No ads on Facebook too?

    • I needed to whitelist the Phone app and another one or two to stop it from causing WiFi calling to stop working.

  • How are you all making it work on your phones/mobile devices?

In iPad, it says it will only work in Safari. Is it not system-wide?

In Android (Pixel) tablet, it's asking me to select either Yandex or Samsung browser. Do I install one of these and proceed to use it for blocking ads in games and system-wide?

    • +1

Download the APK from their website.

      • Thank you.

I was struggling with the app downloaded from Play Store.

Now to figure this out on the iPhone/iPad..

        • Did you download adguard apk from their website?

For iOS, how is this system wide when it only blocks in safari?
