    • Block without breaking things.

I personally use Hagezi’s Pro++ and/or 1Hosts Pro blocklist with my own allowlist that I have been building my years of using ad blockers.

When something breaks, rather than immediately turning the Adblocker off, investigate what is causing it to break and if it’s important, add it to your allowlist. You also get a brownie point with you report it on GitHub so they can add it for others.

With the Adguard mobile app, since it is creating a local vpn to block ads system wide, it can’t have too many rules in one file and all rules can’t exceed 500,000.
More rules, more time to process them. Don’t keep adding more blocklists unless you need to.

Does the scheduling work for ipads?

Is this something that I can use to block Ads on kids Ipad games? Or any better recommendation ?

    • Yes. Adguard has a free DNS you can use. It goes in the "private dns" section on Android and something similar on Apple devices. Check it out here https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html under Method №2: Configure AdGuard DNS manually. It works well and we have used it. However, at this price I've no problem paying for a lifetime membership.

  • Redemption deadline: redeem your code within 30 days of purchase

Can I just redeem this once on my desktop and do it after 30days on other devices?

  • You can just change your dns to block ads on android at least.

    • +1

More ads and trackers can be blocked through the app. DNS level blocking has more limitations.

      Test this:
      https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock.html

It looks like DNS blocking doesn't block static and dynamic ads (cosmetic filter) and also ads.js and pagead.js (Ad Scripts loading).

      • It feels cheating but you can add his blocklist and it will show 100% on his test.

  • Thanks. Also bought the AdGuard VPN: 5-Yr Subscription on sale for $34.97 using take20 code.

  • Ad guard home on Raspberry Pi works well for me.. across all devices at no cost. All devices set DNS address to Adguard home IP address, no change for openwrt settings.

    • Is this only for when youre within your home network?

  • Nice. I was looking for a basic parental control application. This is cheap enough to try.

    • If only websites, there's parental control in NextDNS settings and NextDNS is free for personal use. I think Adguard DNS (login) also has parental control and free for personal too (limit 300k queries, I think similar with NextDNS).

To control apps, Adguard app then.

      • My understanding is AdGuard can also do content scanning, but I haven't tested it yet.

        • +1

Yes. Login Adguard DNS. In Server settings > Parental control if enabled:
          Block adult websites
          Safe search
          YouTube restricted mode
          and 1 more option:
Block services and websites, apps and games (just enable/disable from the list)

In my opinion, NextDNS is more user friendly than Adguard DNS.

          • @neoleo: That's not content scanning, that's DNS blocking.

I'm talking about AdGuard App that can (supposedly) inspect the contents of a web page. Sometimes you don't want to block the whole site, but only pages with a specific text on it. Obviously kids can work around that, but it's mostly to prevent accidental exposure to shocking content.

            • @bio: I haven't found this scanning feature. Finding and blocking certain texts/pages in websites? Maybe manually add certain domain blocking to block adult pics in websites if parental control miss it.

But I remember that in the past I blocked ads in the form of pictures/video in certain websites by using adblocker extension in a browser.

  • Thanks OP, will give it a go!

  • Has anyone purchased 1min AI- lifetime subscriptions for 39.99$?

I did some googling. Avoid. I think it's ok if you are a "lite" user. But any professional Ozbargainer should avoid. You'll burn through the monthly credits too fast.

  • Is it safe to enable HTTPS on phone ?

    • HTTPS Filtering is enabled for me as it can filter ads and trackers in apps and websites. Not all apps/websites are good to be filtered such as banking websites/apps, etc. I don't mind news sites, games etc. to be filtered. Certain apps/websites don't work properly with HTTPS filtering, you can adjust this.

There's Website allowlist in Settings - Filtering - Network - HTTPS Filtering - HTTPS filtered websites - Website allowlist. The list includes financial/bank websites, messengers etc. Any sensitive/privacy/financial websites should already be covered in the list. You can add more if you want.

In the center section of the app, you can find/check apps to change the settings of each app such as "Filter HTTPS traffic", enable/disable data for certain apps (like firewall), etc.

      • can you reverse the setting, ie only allow a few app to go through the HTTPS CA ?

        • Yes

  • Hey Thanks OP,…. I redeemed the code and followed the instructions to create an account, but the code and account aren't linked. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    • +2

In your account there should be a button that reads something like Bind License. Click on that and paste your license.

  • Is the paid app much better than the free adguard DNS

    • Yes. DNS level blocking has more limitations in blocking ads.

      Test the difference with this:
      https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock.html

It looks like DNS blocking doesn't block static and dynamic ads (cosmetic filter) and also ads.js and pagead.js (Ad Scripts loading). I compared NextNDS with Adguard app. It looks like NextDNS has more features, more filters and more user friendly if compared with Adguard DNS. I put NextDNS for DNS in Adguard app + using Adguard VPN is great combination.

  • How are people so comfortable with the HTTPS filtering? That's the thing that puts me off this. I know AdGuard is generally trusted, but it feels like a very large security risk for a marginally better ad blocking experience vs browser content blocking / DNS.

    • HTTPS filtering is not enabled by default. You have to enable it in the setting if you want. This is useful to block ads and trackers in websites and apps that use HTTPS. Many domains have been excluded by default like bank domains etc. You can add more websites to be excluded and apps too.

    • I gave it a try. It's not enabled by default and is ootional. The CA certificate it installs seems to be local to the phone and so should be the private key of it (seemingly).

That reduces the risk of getting an external MITM attack without AdGuard not knowing about it.
As for the content, you'll have to trust AdGuard app well enough to be confident that the intercepted data is not sent outside the phone.

Anyway as an option, it's very nice to have.

      • Good to know it's optional. They talk about it here, so it's not like they're hiding it. But as you said, it requires trusting a third party (AdGuard) with handling potentially very sensitive data.

        https://adguard.com/kb/general/https-filtering/what-is-https…

        • Good article! I just checked enabling https filtering and visiting my banking website. It intercepted traffic to Google but not to the bank. So that remained secure even with https filtering active.

  • How good is this compared to AdBlock? I find that a lot of websites now detect that I'm running AdBlock and won't load or run unless I disable it. Is it the same for this?

    • +2

There's 1 filter among many other filters in Adguard app. It is "Adblock warning removal list" (enable this). The description says "removes anti-adblock warnings and other obtrusive messages".

Also I use "Bypass Paywalls Clean" extension in my Firefox mobile browser. I can read AFR articles for example that are usually behind paywall. This extension is also available for Kiwi browser for example.

      • Awesome, thanks for sharing.

Use code TAKE20 for an additional 20% off.

  • Tried to activate on iOS but when tapping restore purchase in the app I see this error https://ibb.co/17kb9GV.
Anyone else had this and worked around it?

The instructions provided were incorrect for iOS.
Just click on ‘Log in’ and Enter your license key in the email field and leave the password field blank.

      • Perfect, thank you 🙏

  • Did anyone get a failed payment but still get charged on paypal?

while I do appreciate the OP for the alert from a low price perspective (thankyou)… and even though some is open source (content blocker) it's a pass for me on security grounds when the company is Russian with all Dev & HQ out of Moscow hiding behind its registered office in Cyprus (yes that technically makes it EU which has GDPR data laws applied though the question then for everyone is, is that enough for you to trust them when all Dev/Ops is still out of its original home country??)

Maybe just something to consider before buying…

    • It's been years ago since I bought the lifetime license for 2 devices because of Ozb. I think nobody have complained yet about financial loss or other things from this company.

      • +2

What he says is valid about jurisdiction and security concerns about specific states. No one complains until there is an incident

Easy solution. Just use a different DNS. I use NextDNS for the DNS in the Adguard settings. So, NextDNS can see my browsing history and I can set auto remove my browsing history logs too within 1 day/7 days etc. The NextDNS server can be set to Switzerland (more privacy) or other country. Using NextDNS is good because of esni (encrypted). So, double protection from Adguard+NextDNS for blocking, ads, trackers, malwares etc.

There are a lot of great settings of Tracking Protection in Adguard app. One of them is "Protect against DPI". They added options like "HTTP space juggling" option on top of "increase first packet size" option at the bottom of this setting. I read online about this feature because Adguard users from Korea want more protection from their government watch and also to be able to access certain websites that are blocked by Korean government such as website about abortion for example. When you check a lot of settings in Adguard app, you may understand why I still want to use this app.

One thing I have noticed also is when I use both Adguard app with NextDNS + Adguard VPN, I feel my phone become smoother/faster and sometimes increased free RAM. I checked this through "Hibernator" app.

Using Adguard VPN alone is not good enough because sni is not encrypted (esni). Thanks to NextDNS in Adguard app together with Adguard VPN, the sni status becomes encrypted (esni).

          Check it here:
          https://www.cloudflare.com/en-gb/ssl/encrypted-sni/

TAKE20 and 15% off code by subscribing to the newsletter no longer appear to work.

Coupons cannot be used with this sale.

  • This price is decent considering it's a family account.
I paid about $7 back in Jan 2017 for a single license, but I find it very useful on my android phone.

  • I thought firefox + ublock origin was good enough. Didn't realise the device system and any app farms out all your data too. It's crazy to see the blocked logs when you open something like cam scanner or weatherzone. Thanks for the deal.

  • Would anyone know if I wanted adguard to block ads in just selected apps only (game apps etc) and not ads in any browsers, would I be able to do this?

Unfortunately, just don't feel too comfortable it scanning my browser contents especially over HTTPS so hoping to find this info before deciding to buy.

Also would be really grateful If anyone knows of any working voucher code for this deal.

    TIA

    • Pretty sure you can select the apps that it filters

      • Yep it sure does. Pulled the trigger yesterday and so far it has been working fine.

  • Laptop Slowdown - any ideas? I got the deal a few days ago, but after installing it on my laptop it caused the laptop to slow down remarkably…

Also, on my phone, it doesn't block anything with Chrome (my main mobile browser) - only works with Safari, which I don't use… sigh Anyway to get it to work with Chrome?

    Thanks :)
