            @bheart:

For iOS, how is this system wide when it only blocks in safari?

That is my question as well.

Update: Installed AdGuard DNS configuration profile (method 2 of https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html). I am hoping this will work system-wide in iPhone and iPad.

            • +1

@sridhar: On iOS, go to the 2nd tab (shield icon), enable ‘DNS Protection,’ and tap on the name for more settings.
Select AdGuard DNS to block ads and trackers.

It blocks ads on Outlook, Gmail, and News apps…, but doesn’t work on YouTube.

              • @huggle: Ty. Do you know where the license key can be entered? Talking about the AdGuard Pro app on the iPad.

                • +1

@sridhar: AdGuard Pro: Purchase once on the App Store. No license key needed to access all features.

                  AdGuard Regular:
                  - Register an account on the AdGuard website.
                  - Bind your license key to your account.
                  - Log in in the app to activate it.

            • @sridhar: DNS change. This is the way.

Ad guard home on openwrt works well for me.. across all devices at no cost

    • and even the mobile ones when VPN'd back home

      • How to configure mobile devices vpn'd through home?

        • vpn server at home
          vpn client at mobile

Blokada is a pretty good alternative on Android. Blokada 4 is free, lightweight and still works on Android 15:

    https://github.com/blokadaorg/blokada/releases/tag/archive

    • +1

      Or AdAway if rooted.

      • I had AdAway long time ago, but Adguard has a lot more features and filters. No need to root with Adguard app.

    • Blokada was too heavy/lagging for android, last time I tried long time ago. More features in Adguard app.

      • +1

Yes, I think Blokada 5 and 6 are a bit heavy. Version 4 is good though.

  • Will this block cashback cookies.

  • For iPhone usage how does this compare to free plugins?

  • +1

So I'm familiar with the adguard DNS.. and I run my own pihole.. is this a paid 'premium' DNS product or something else

Is adguard a diff product than adguard DNS?

    • +2

Adguard app has more features and DNS is included (include Adguard DNS and other DNS or add manually).

      Test the difference with this:
      https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock.html

It looks like DNS blocking doesn't block static and dynamic ads (cosmetic filter) and also ads.js and pagead.js (Ad Scripts loading). I compared NextNDS with Adguard app.

      • And the primary method adguard app does is creating a VPN?

        • It's not a VPN if you only use the Adguard app. VPN if you use Adguard VPN.

          • @neoleo: sorry i meant, the primary way adguard app works to block ads on device is to create a 'VPN' connection?

Not concerned or any need about the typical VPN functionality but wondering about the mechanism adguard blocks ads on device.

            • @lawyerz: It's local.

              That's how android works.

Another way is just put Adguard DNS in Private DNS settings. But the adblocking capability is limited/less than the powerful app.

  • Can anyone comment on how good Adguard is with an iPhone? I currently use chrome on my iPhone, partly due to using chrome on my computer, so I’m able to seamlessly view tabs etc on either device.

However, if I watch say an nba/nfl stream on Google chrome - or even the Twitch app, I get bombarded with ads, so am wondering if this would for the most part, solve that issue.

    • I use a different app called Wipr to block ads in Safari and it works well.

I am guessing AdGuard will do the same.

      • Yes, of course it works in Safari browser too.

      • Off topic: I used your Wordpress tutorials so much about 10+ years ago when I was in a web dev role. Just wanted to say thanks!

  • I dont know if its just me but adguard slows my youtube app to the point where i just disable it

    • +2

Rather than Youtube app, just use Brave browser (adblocker built-in) or Firefox (+ublock origin extension). YouTube website can run in the background with these browsers while doing something else like reading news or other apps for example.

      • Will try that. Thank you

        • …or sideload NewPipeX.

          • +1

            @bio: Or use Revanced app.

    • +1

Yes, YouTube has addblocker detection built it, and slows to a crawl.

  • Interesting.

So what ads will this block on, say and Android phone?

    Website ads?
    YouTube ads?
    Free apps that have ads?

    • +1

Most if not all ads (system wide) in any apps and browsers. If there's still ads, people can block the ads domain manually (user rules). Just check the logs. Even people can block video domain manually if people don't want to see video in the news for example.

Certain apps and websites can be excluded from blocking if people don't want.

      • Awesome thanks.

        So YouTube ads too?

        • +2

Adguard app has this feature, but I haven't tried it or forget maybe. Other ways are using Revanced app for YouTube or Brave with adblocker built-in or Firefox browser (ublock origin extension).

          Edit: in Adguard app:
Under Protection section at the bottom, there's "How to block ads on YouTube"
          1. Open the YouTube app
          2. Select a video
          3. Tap share
          4. Choose Adguard Player

          Features:
          No ads
          Background play

  • For me 10% tax was added and total price was US$16.70?

  • +3

Been using this on my Mac for 3 years now and works great!

Just remember to turn off the protection when using CR or TCB and turn it back on once you are done.

  • Redemption deadline: redeem your code within 30 days of purchase

Does that mean if I have a new device I wont be able to use it after 30 days of date of purchase?

Also assume you cant change your 9 devices as part of the plan?

    • +2

Does that mean if I have a new device I wont be able to use it after 30 days of date of purchase?

No. Once you have the license code you can use it anytime on up to 9 devices.

Also assume you cant change your 9 devices as part of the plan?

      We can.

Create a free AdGuard account and bind your license key. You can then view your active devices and remove the key from the devices anytime.

      • Wow thats truly lifetime. Thanks heaps for the info mate. Got me to purchase it

      • Sorry, silly question - 9 registered devices at any given time? So if my family and I have used all the slots and my current phone decides to kick the bucket can I unregister it and replace with my new one?

        • Yes. For example you want to move the Adguard licence from an old phone to a new phone, you can login Adguard and change it.

  • How can I whitelist www.cashrewards.com.au ?

I found a way to do it for App but how to do it for Chrome browsing?

    • +1

For me, I just disable the Adguard app before using Cashrewards. Then re-enable after finish purchasing. This is safer option.

People can exclude certain apps and websites from blocking, but I don't want to take the risk of untracked cashback. Just disable when using Cashrewards and re-enable after finish.

    • Those cashback sites use multiple other subprocessors so it's not ideal whitelisting just their primary site. Just disable the thing and re-enable after you finish purchasing.

  • Installed this on Firefox, now ozbargain is blocked :D

    • Technically OzB is an ad for discounted products.

      Adguard - incredibly intelligent.

    • +2

See how much you can save in a month :)

  • Guessing this is best for phones and tablets? On my PC I use Brave with uBlock Origin extension, so is having my PC consume a license pointless?

    • Brave only blocks in the browser, not system wide. Think ads and trackers in Windows and other apps include games.

  • Anyone knows if you can buy and add a 2nd family licence to an existing account or if it's limited to one per account?

    • +1

Just use another new account with different email. If you buy 2nd license, then total 9x2 devices.

      • Yeah was thinking to do that, cheers

  • I bought another one as needed it on more devices. So has to be a new second account is the way to go and you can’t add this license to an existing account?

    • NOTE: This plan is only available to NEW users

    • +1

Yes, codes can be stacked. Login to Adguard on your computer, go to licences and bind the new code.

  • Is this the same adguard that i think i saw on asus router?

  • Can it block ads in facebook app in the middle/start of videos?

    • +1

Yes. If not yet, you can add manually in User rules after checking the logs (if you know how to read this).

Even unrelated video in the news. I added the video domain manually if not blocked yet. Then the video is blocked.

    • I don't use Facebook app, only Facebook in a browser. So, I haven't tried to block videos in Facebook app. If you can read the logs in Adguard app, then successfully block the video domains in Facebook app, inform people here then :)

    • ill buy it instantly if it blocks those ads when watching facebook videos lol, hoping someone can comment

  • Does this work blocking out Reddit ads on iOS apps?
    And iOS apps altogether?

    • Doesn’t work on Reddit

    • I haven't tried reddit app. But sometimes I read reddit website in my browser, no ads.

Adguard app blocks ads, trackers, malware in Android devices (systemwide, include other apps).

iOS apps? Not sure about this. If not, you can try NextDNS (systemwide, free for personal use). NextDNS blocks ads, trackers, malwares on DNS level.

      • DNS-level blocking doesn't work for Reddit or Twitter

    • It doesn't work for iOS apps that I've tried (Reddit, Twitter). But it does work in the browser. So I use the browser instead of the native app.

  • Awesome deal! I had 14 dollars credit left from a previous deal. That combined with the 20% off, I only had to pay 1.10 dollars (I used a US address and I think it reduced the taxes a little).

    1. Can we block YouTube shorts with parental access.
    2. Can this be configured on miniPC ?
      1. Not sure about this. Maybe you want to try Revanced app. YouTube shorts can be blocked along with many other settings.

      2. MiniPC? Yes. If Windows, install the Adguard for Windows then.

      • No I wanted to block things on home network for kids. Esp shorts. Thought to install this on homelab. Will need to look into it if possible

        • You can try Sponsorblock extension in browsers. With this, you can block YouTube shorts along with many other settings.

Adguard or NextDNS can block other websites.

  • Anyone got it to work without using the VPN due android. Work deactivate my phone is a VPN is running concurrently with teams or an internal work page.

    • I don't think so. Adguard app (without Adguard VPN) acts like a VPN due to android. But, if you can change Private DNS in android Settings, you can put any DNS such as Adguard DNS (block ads, trackers too), NextDNS, etc. But DNS blocking is not as good as Adguard app.

      Test this:
      https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock.html

It looks like DNS blocking doesn't block static and dynamic ads (cosmetic filter) and also ads.js and pagead.js (Ad Scripts loading).

  • Looking for two lifetime subscription

    • Use 2 different emails for 2 new accounts.

  • I have never used adguard before but can I use this for network wide ad blocking?

    • Yes. You can put Adguard DNS or NextDNS (I did previously) in router settings, so network wide ad blocking. Not as good as Adguard app. Maybe check Adguard Home, I haven't tried it.

    • AdGuard Home would be better for that, it’s free, but you need an always-on computer to run it on.

  • I bought the license and installed the app on my phone and activated the license. But I can still see ads on instagram. What am I doing wrong?

    • Have you changed the settings? Enable filters, etc. So many can be configured in the app.

If there's still ads in any websites/apps, you can check the logs, then add the ads domain manually in User rules for example.

      • Thanks. I needed to enable https filtering, but then websites wouldn't load in browsers. So I had to exclude those. Am I doing it right?

Edit: correction. I can still see ads. Much less I think, but I can still see some.

        • I enable https filtering, but yeah certain websites wouldn't load in browsers. So, exclude these websites from filtering. Add these in User rules for example. There are 2, User rules in Adblocking section and DNS protection inside DNS filters.

          • @neoleo: I can still see ads in the Instagram app. Is that expected?

            • @DontNeedThis: I checked, same … I have enabled https filtering for this app too. I tried to block some domains from checking the logs. Still thinking which other domains for the ads.

Hopefully other users could solve this.

              • +1

@neoleo: It seems like you have to root your phone for in-app ad blocking. I wish I knew that before purchasing the plan. https://ibb.co/pnHmPR6

I already have adblock on my browsers and YouTube revanced. So this is useless if it doesn't block in-app ads.

                • @DontNeedThis: No need for root, but need to enable https filtering. Maybe change filters setting etc.

Edit: some people on Reddit have the same problem. Maybe need another way if all settings and manual blocking don't work for this.

                • @DontNeedThis: Can you please check if it blocks the ads for facebook videos as well, the ones that pop up at the end/middle

  • I used this for a few months, and while the admin experience was superior, it did a poor job of blocking Apples private DNS services. That meant every now and then, Safari and other apps would bypass the rules. I used it for more than just Ads - blocking adult sites & youtube for my kids - however the Youtube app would use apple private DNS, and Safari would allow through adult sites too.

I moved to NextDNS and they do a much better job and haven't had an issue since. The admin experience is worse, but it does a better job overall.

  • Need to find a decent user guide that runs through all the settings or provides a good example reference setup.

  • Great product. I use it across PC's, phones and tablets.

  • Can this block paywall ?

    • There are anti paywall filters that can be added in the app manually. Not sure about the effectiveness. But I think adding Bypass Paywalls Clean extension in Firefox or Kiwi browser is good. I use this extension to read AFR for example.

  • I used this for a long while but ended up deleting it.

It can slow down a fair few websites or make them unusable unfortunately, and also can completely screw up a work phone as it blocks a few too many things.

You can set up the equivalent of this all mostly for free like using alternate browsers and alternate software versions. But good if you're just looking for a one stop broad solution.

    • Maybe need to change certain settings in order not to slow down or make them unusable or screw up a work phone.

It depends on how many filters you put and other settings. Otherwise exclude the websites or apps from filtering.
