  • Does this block YouTube ads?

    • Already been answered

    • +1

Or use brave browser if not watch on TV

  • So how do you accommodate more than 9 devices?

    • +2

      Install it on your router.

      • How we install it on a router? Any tutorial i can follow?

        • +1

Either use AdGuard Home if your router supports it (or use it on your NAS or Server if you have one, or a Raspberry Pi/Zero): https://adguard.com/en/adguard-home/overview.html

Or just use AdGuards public DNS servers; in your routers DNS settings change it to AdGuards DNS servers: primary 94.140.14.14, secondary 94.140.15.15: https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

But if you need more than 9 devices I'd still recommend to buy more licenses and install the apps too. Despite StackSocial saying new users only it's not, you can stack them in the same existing AdGuard account.

I use AdGuard Home and also the AdGuard adblocker licensed apps in this post together.

    • +1

Buy more license codes. Despite StackSocial saying new users only it's not, you can stack them.

Or you could just point your devices to use AdGuard's DNS servers. Or use free AdGuard Home to block ads network-wide at the DNS level on your router/NAS/Server. But I prefer to use both of them together, it's more customisable & more features.

      • +2

        Sorry I'm a dummy at these things…but

If we can just point device at AdGuard's DNS servers, what's the benefit then of paying for the license? Is it for when you're out of home (e.g. your device isn't connected to home wifi/router?)

        • +2

If you point your device to their DNS servers that will also work when you're not connected to your home network.

The license/app provides more features and customisability than just the DNS servers. And single tap to turn it on or off e.g you may want to turn it off temporarily so as to not block cash-back trackers (or configure it to never block those particular trackers).

          • +1

@sav11: Thank you for your responses - very helpful :)

  • Will this work for articles that are behind paywall?

    • No, for that there are some other tools which only work for certain pages

      • Thank you!

    • Yes it supports custom user scripts which can do that. Doesn't work for all pay-walled sites though.

  • Maximum of 9 devices – can devices be removed or swapped at any time?

    • +2

Yes can swap anytime, login to their portal and remove unused ones

  • +6

Why is this being so praised.
UBlock origin, Sponsor block, Vanced apps.

I don't think I see any ads anymore other than the bus and freeway.

    • +2

Because it blocks ads in apps that aren't a browser?

      • What are example ads that not in browser? Im confused

        • probably means ads on phone apps. though my DNS post above blocks them for free.

      • so does my DNS post above.

    • +1

Not only blocking ads, but also have other features. In android phone, other features for system wide (not only browser) such as:
✓ Advanced tracking protection (many options that are not available in browser).
      ✓ Firewall function for apps
      Etc.

I combine this app with NextDNS ;-) So, it's like double protection, even triple protection when using Adguard VPN.

  • +1

There's also AdAway, a similar free project for Android

    https://f-droid.org/packages/org.adaway/

    • I used AdAway years ago. Adguard is much better with more features and filters.

  • Can it protect you from government/family tracking?

  • I've got a lifetime personal licence already but been looking for a family one for other devices and people in the fam.

But it's new users only right?

It's just email based right? Would it work if I just used a new email?

    • +2

Despite StackSocial saying new users only it's not, you can stack more licenses on the same account. It will add the "family" 9 licenses to your existing "personal" 3 for a total of 12 devices.

      • +1

        Thanks for that.
Double-confirming that is what happened :)

  • I purchased AdGuard premium in my iPhone already, is this any different?

    • +1

Depends what you mean by AdGuard premium. This is lifetime licenses for AdGuard adblocker apps (on any platform), as opposed to a subscription to AdGuard Premium DNS service.

      • Im speaking about the AdGuard premium for 19.99 lifetime license in AppStore. Not vpn service.

      • And the adguard apps are dns based I think it’s the vpn you are talking about.

        • I'm not talking about the VPN though they do have one, & if you subscribe to the VPN it also includes their premium DNS service as a free inclusion.

The one in the IOS appstore only blocks ads in Safari. The app this license is for blocks ads device-wide i.e in other apps as well as browsers. You have to side-load it, not available in appstores.

          • @sav11: Hi the one I’m talking about blocks system wide I don’t use safari sorry so I don’t know about that.

  • Tailscale + (Technitium DNS | PiHole | adguard home]

For that free and fairly easy to set up for family phones with self hosted DNS. Just have em make Tailscale accounts and share your DNS's IP + port with them so they can use it

  • How does it work with the rewards app such as Cashrewards, Shopback and Top Cashback on mobile phones? Would it just work because they use their own apps for tracking?

    • +2

In browsers it blocks trackers including the ones cashback services use. I don't use cashback apps so not sure but I think it would still block them.

You can easily configure it to not block particular apps. Also one tap to just turn it off temporarily.

      • Is that just the adguard app? No issue for cashback using their dns? Interested but curious how i might set it up.

        • I'm not sure if their DNS servers block those trackers or not sorry.

          • @sav11: Yes, it can block trackers too. So, just disable it temporarily. After finish shopping, enable it again.

        • Adguard app include Adguard DNS can interest with cashback tracking. Just disable the app temporarily. After finish shopping, enable it again.

          • @neoleo: Thanks. So better to use APP not DNS on router if use cashback stuff.

            • @Xizor: *interest interfere

DNS on router is for all devices protection in the same network.

When you use cashback app/website, I recommend to just use your phone without WiFi and disable Adguard app in the phone. So, no problem with cashback tracking.

              • +1

@neoleo: Thanks mate. Exactly what i was thinking so good to see on the right path.

    • When you want to use cashback app/website, just disable Adguard app temporarily. After you finish shopping, enable it again.

Word to the wise, do not purchase using PayPal express checkout without creating a stacksocial account first. It will not send you a redemption code or anything like that separately, you will just a request to setup an account to redeem it, but then you have no way to redeem it. I've sent a submitted a ticket to their support team.

    • Can you use normal regular PayPal?

  • I've been using Blokada on my Android phone. Would this be better?

    • I haven't used Blokada but it has pretty bad reviews on the Google Play store.

Looks like Blokada is only for Android and IOS? AdGuard adblocker in this post can be used on all platforms including Windows and Linux.

IMO yes this would be better.

    • Years ago I tried Blokada and it was too heavy … This one is much better with more features.

  • Would it be ok to have run anti virus and this at the same time?

    • Yes that's fine, doesn't cause any problems.

  • Noob question… Is adguard like nextdns?

    • +1

      AdGuard DNS is like NextDNS.

The AdGuard Adblocker app in this post provides some other features and customisations at the device level e.g exempt particular apps from filtering, among many others.

  • Just purchased and despite it showing the total as $15.97 with $0 tax, I was charged $17.57 usd (inc. $1.60 tax)

    • Same here

    • +3

I used NordVPN with New York server. No tax …

  • I have network wide adblocking for everything at home, I forget how much ads there are (including ozbargain - sorry not sorry) - this even works on my mobile and laptop outside of my network because I'm connected to teh home vpn. Why would anyone pay for this when you have pihole that is tremendous ?

    • I also have Pihole but it does not block ads in apps on your phone etc.

      • really ? I get this blank screen in some apps with a x to close it. I don't think I've seen ads on phones. How big is your list ?

    • Because it gives you much more features, & control at the device level.

Also free AdGuard Home is the equivalent of Pihole but better.

I used to use Pihole then I upgraded to AdGuard Home + AdGuard adblocker apps on devices, haven't looked back.

BTW you don't have to connect to your home VPN for adblocking, just use the Pihole DNS on your devices.

      • Curious, if I wanted to install the adblocker on kids devices to stop ads but also adult websites, is there a way to stop the kids from “turning off” the app? Ie password protect etc ? I know I can turn off deleting the app via screen time on apple but what about stopping them from changing settings and turning off etc.

        • +1

You could use another app such as Smart Applock to PIN protect the AdGuard app.

      • Yeah I know, but the vpn is for other purposes as well. The network wide ad blocking is good perk while i'm connected. Curious as to what more could you want, what am I missing out on ?

I do pay for Youtube Premium, but for everything else I have blocked everything - even to a point that my partner hates it because the shopping banner at the top of google searches don't appear. But I use whoogle instead of direct access to google.

        • Did some research it looks like, based on reddit comments etc… if you are able to run network wide, then do so… if you are unable to or don't know how to or just can't be bothered then use this.

Based on my usecase it doesn't look like it provides any value because i run my own services, but for others it might.

  • I think 3 devices is good enough for me. How much is the personal?

  • What will happen when buying things via cashback provider will it get tracked or blocked?

  • Is there a way to increase the amount of devices?

    • I've read you can buy the lifetime or another personal subscription again and bind the additional licenses on the same adguard account - no need to be a new user.

  • Serious question, any point in getting this if your home router (ASUS) already has Adguard?

    • For devices you only use on the home network (or tailscale through etc.), no. But this would then be for adguard while on mobile networks.

      • Does this detect malware or just an ad blocker?

  • What advantages does it give compared to the free version? I find the free version quite good already.

  • I’ve just purchased AdGuard Family Plan and installed it on my laptop with default settings.

Webpages seem to take longer to load? (I’m using Chrome on Windows 11)

Also, how do I configure it to block Prime Video ads?

  • How does this compare to using a combination of Wipr 2 and Hush? I’ve already paid for Wipr 2 but if this is much better happy to swap to this. Anyone have any idea?

  • Is there any reason to buy this instead of just using quad 9 dns?

  • +1

I've used Adguard before but have started using VPNs and browser adblockers which is enough for me.

What are your thoughts on this though?
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Adguard/comments/1di1yg6/https_filt…

    • "I just turned off HTTPS filtering for the fear of "Adguard knowing everything I type even on HTTPS encryption, including passwords and one day if they turn rogue they could POTENTIALLY have all my data".

What are the chances that company founded in Russia, and which still has staff based on Russia, would turn rogue?

      • +1

        @Kara-Murza
Genuine question, where can you find this "turn off HTTPS filtering" option?

I've been using "Adguard DNS" (DNS-over-HTTPS); does it mean I'm not safe from Russian people snooping against my browsing habits?
        Ta!

        • Sorry I don't know where the options settings are located, I was just quoting from the reddit thread mentioned by the user I was replying to. That thread was 8 months ago, so seems unlikely the options settings would have changed between then and now, but it's possible.

      • +1

What are the chances that company founded in Russia, and which still has staff based on Russia, would turn rogue?

Difficult to say but could guarantee it's higher than no chance at all

  • Thanks for the deal. Never knew about this and I just started using it. So far so good :)

  • I like adguard but lately it seems to be unable to block some ads from apps (eg. 9gag)
Also sometimes it needs a turn off turn on to start blocking ads.
Does anyone have any insight about these problems?

  • +1

Bargain of the century: you pay ~$25 to swap your DNS for a Russian DNS (AdGuard moved to Cyprus, but still have staff in Russia), and you get block ads you could easily block for free.

    • … sure. But you then trust google or other dns providers

  • I've been a fan with adguard, totally worth it!
Make sure you disable it if you are planning to use it for cashback websites….

  • Is there an expiry on this offer?

  • is this worth it if you've got openWrt and adblock?

  • I use uBlock Origin and Adblock Plus (both free) on laptop and they have been just fine. They block YouTube ads too. My usage of apps that have ads is low enough to not bother about those ads.

  • There’s a tax of US$1.6 on top making it US$17.57. Still a bargain!
