glass back can break/crack on a drop - plastic won't

    • -6

Im in the same boat, my s21 ultra arrived in the mail today and have yet to open it. I used all the discount codes including the $400 trade-in code but had no intention of trading in my device but I also had no intention of paying the $400 extra since I'm not eligible. I read a lot of comments about not returning the device and so I thought id give it a go.

Today I called Samsung and spoke to an agent, they told me that I would be charged for the $400 since I did not use return an eligible device.

i was also wondering if anyone has an experience contrary to my own? ie not returned a phone but was not charged the bonus voucher?

      • +2

well they probably will now since you just told them lol

      • +2

The 3rd party trade in company can only automatically debit the value for the trade in on the CC details you provided.
For samsung to charge you for the $400, they would either have to raise a payment request via email, OR ask the 3rd party tradein company for your CC details.
They would not be saving your payment details beyond the point of purchase for privacy reasons.

Suggest all your call did was create a ticket to do one of the above, probably would have been better to read all the previous comments on this such as using a coles temp visa card for the trade in details or maybe not explicitly telling Samsung that you intend to purposefully NOT honor the spirit of the deal by raising a trade-up for an ineligible device.

        • -1

@thedean thanks for the useful comment! I'm definitely ok with the 3rd party taking back the trade-in.

I just put it out to the ozbargin community as there are not many comments regarding how Samsung has gone about those that have not honored the trade-in deal (be it intentional or not). I know calling Samsung might /might not have prompted action but I figured that they might just say keep the phone, stranger things have happened.

Myself, I'll play it safe and return the phone to avoid the potential $400 bonus clawback in a month's time. Should have done the coles temp visa idea. Oh well.

Just got off live chat with Samsung, and they said:

"By the way, the $200 voucher discount code is not stackable nor cannot be combined/used with the Trade-up deal nor any other codes/promotions."

I've yet to test this though

    • +2

We all got the same warning and despite that, the stacking still works.

  • Hi, trade in app reads i am not eligible as i have cracked screen/damage. was it the case for any others who traded in?

    • I got $15 for a S10 with cracked screen.

      • What brand/model was it?

        • Samsung S10 128GB

    • Yes, I had the same issue and it won't allow me to proceed, you need to say the screen is all good to go through.

    • Newer phones will be accepted even with damage, but at a much lower trade in value. Older phones will not be accepted. You can check the trade in value of any device and answer the relevant questions (eg. screen damage) to identify value with or without damage.

      https://www.samsung.com/au/tradeup/

    • Be a shame if the phone cracked during transit.

  • Any one getting an issue with their Trade Up ID code at check out?
Keep getting "Sorry, due to an error, trade-in service is unavailable at the moment"

    • Mine worked fine. I entered my trade-up code first before my $200 "loyalty" voucher.

    • Have you entered your credit/debit card details into the app on the phone?

      • no i didnt, I'm assuming i need to move ahead with this first?

        • +1

yes you do, then you won't get the error message

  • -1

Is there any way to skip through the tests on the trade up app?

    • +2

      no

      • Turns out you can fail some tests and still get a code :D

  • +1

ALREADY GONE - I've got a $50 dollar sign up coupon I recieved up for grabs as I was impatient whjen ordering over the weekend. First to message me gets it.

Email from samsung abt return device, so i returned it

Thanks for your query, if you wish to not return your old device you will be charged the full trade-in credit you received at checkout when purchasing your new device. After this it will no longer be a requirement to return your old device to us. Please keep in mind that any promotions or bonuses you received in addition to your trade-in credit are managed by Samsung directly and Asurion does not manage or apply extra promotional credit. We hope that this information has been helpful.
Unfortunately, we do not have the exact time frame of when you will be charged, this is an automated process and the charge should occur after 14 days has passed since you were sent your return label. To make the process as easy as possible please keep the funds available in your account.
You may receive some reminder emails about returning your old device which you can ignore if you’re planning to keep that device.

    • Was this email from samsung or asurion?

      • asurion, Samsung asked me to contact them.

    • +1

      Thanks for sharing mate.

It sounds like they have changed their replies to "hint" that the bonus might be charged by Samsung themselves.

    • +5

I read that to mean they will not charge the promotional credit and only trade in credit?

      • Might be, I didn't risk as my S7 is not worth risking $400.

As long as my new S21 doesn't let me down

        • Can I ask how long it took for Asurion to reply to your enquiry?

      • +1

IMO no way this will happen.
what you deem a good product and what asurion consider a good product is subjective. So if it didnt meet their requirement they would have to be very specific that they would charge the phone trade in value AND the bonus. Any ambiguity and you can imagine a company like this & the sheer volume on this deal would be hit by ACCC (or a class action etc)
the trade in deal is with asurion not samsung- for Asurion it is a win win - phone sucks they charge you, phone is good they refurb and sell for much more than trade in value

Samsung couldn't care less - they want market share and people to remain loyal to Samsung. I would say even with the bonus promo they will be selling above cost price - judging from the overseas prices- we always get ripped off in Australia (hence grey sales market from HK)

I think it is a great initiative but i'd like to see Samsung do something else to recycle junk phones? maybe they do but dont advertise it?

      • yeah, I think so. I hope so

    • +1

I received the same email. I have replied requesting clarification as it is very ambiguous. Let us know if you hear any more.

      • +1

dude, if you get any reply, plz tell me thx.

  • Hi - this will be my first time buying Samsung phone and noted that I need to buy the charger separately? Is this something I can buy from KMart etc or better to buy from Samsung?

    • You can buy third party chargers, just make sure they are reputable and genuine fast chargers. Otherwise buy from Samsung

      • Thanks - will do.

      • The 25W fast charger seems to be out of stock

  • Get this error now "The code you entered did not affect your order. Please note, codes may only be valid for certain items or in certain conditions."

I will see if I can get another code to try.

    • Looks like the party is over…

    • Asked Samsung support, they said that the code was still getting accepted but the error was "possibly due to influx of S21 inquiries the server is getting", and to try again like an hour later. Hopefully the code works by then.

      • Haha. I can't even get into the livechat. Stuck on number 3 for like 2 hours.

    • Same issue, tried the code given by chat, have the same error message. Jump on chat, gave me another code to try, same error message. Chat consultant asked me to try again in 1-2 hours.

Got an email about a late fee if I don't send my old phone back. Is this separate to trade in amount?
Anyone been through the process of not sending phone back? What do I need to do? Or just wait it out?

    Thanks

  • Deciding between s21 white or black? Also is it worth paying extra for s21 plus?

    • -2

I don't see the point in the "+". It is the second-cheapest wine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlg3H1StHpQ

You either want the standard, or the Ultra.

Not like Apple back in the 6-8 days, where the plus models had a few significant advantages.

      • You don't see the point of wanting a 6.7" screen instead of a 6.2" and not wanting to splurge an extra $300 for the ultra for other upgrades you may not be that interested in?

If the standard and the plus had the same size screen I'd understand your comment but since they don't it doesn't make much sense.

        • You don't see the point of wanting a 6.7" screen instead of a 6.2"

I'm saying it is a very small thing - 8% bigger? Just hold it 8% closer and you get the same effect.
If you can't afford the Ultra, you can't afford $200 for minor difference either.

          • @bargaino: If we are being pedantic, the area difference is 11.5% not 8%. And i mean you could apply that logic to almost any difference in screen size, "just hold it 20% closer and stick with a 5.5 inch!" (have not done the maths, just showing the ludicrousness of the logic).

The Ultra's screen also has rounded edges and the S21+ doesn't so that's another difference for people who hate edges. But really the size difference alone is noticable enough for someone to be happy to spend $200 extra for the plus but not $500 extra for the ultra.

If you can't afford the Ultra, you can't afford $200 for minor difference either.

Just when you couldn't possibly come across any more gate keeperish, you end with this gem. Sheesh.

            • +1

@axel32: I'm just thinking that the better camera on the Ultra would be more of an excuse, more bang-for the buck.

I recently got the Oppo A73 for only $100 from Target. I was amazed at how good it was, aside form being locked to Optus.
It is 90% as good as the flagship phones, honestly. Why am I paying several times as much for the Samsung? Only a few things:

              • waterproof
              • better photos, in a wider range of lighting, and telephoto.
              • looks slightly prettier. … Or does it? I think the Oppo is copying the looks of the S20+, and they have done a good job. You'd like the 6.5" display and glass back :-)

Sure the Samsung benchmarks faster. And in a side-by-side comparison, the Samsung display is clearly better. Yes the 120Hz silky-smooth scrolling is awesome - but does it improve my life?

Apparently $200 voucher no longer works?

    • yeah the support said it doesn't work on s21 anymore, just had a discussion. pretty sure this deal is now expired

      • People have been saying that for many days, and other people have been getting it anyway. One day it will be true.

        • the support gave me a voucher that can't been used on the s21 so im just basing it off what i've been told

        • I have a code but doesn't work no more

          • @mantesting: We had that too. And people contacted support to swap their non-working codes for new ones. How can you really know when it is over?

            • @bargaino: i was replacing my expired code and the new one doesn't work with s21 and i received my old code yesterday

        • I got my code this morning and tried checking out this afternoon doesn't work.

Annoyed at myself waiting for the newsletter code in the email. Shoulda just ordered it when I had the chance.

      • +4

Got this from Chatbot - basically saying they are no longer accepting $200 voucher :(

Samsung has updated the guidelines regarding RRP discount to be separate with Voucher discount. Customers can still take advantage of published RRP Discounts (total amount is device specific) or use the Voucher code. However, they can no longer be used together.

    • I just used the voucher in this afternoon

      • Had the voucher in my cart, then cart said empty. Now it says unusable.

Just spoke to chat, they've updated the terms and it can't be used on a product that has a discount from RRP

      • +1

I've received 3 different codes today and none of them have worked. Basically tells me in red outline on top of the checkout page that the code can't be applied. Once I told chat that the codes weren't working they were saying that the discount has already been provided on site and the loyalty voucher isn't on offer anymore. Not sure if true but I reckon due to the codes not working they probably didn't want to deal with me any longer so they used that line.

      • I just tried now and the $200 code is no longer working. Was working yesterday but I didn't order. Now kicking myself for missing this.

        • I mentioned the code not working and the chat guy said it's a know issue that they are working on fixing? Not sure about it but there may still be some hope!

          • @Bazzaaa: The code only works on non-discounted prices. All the S21 models have a discount so it looks like they updated the loyalty code to check the RRP price first.

I tested on the full RRP S20FE and the code works. However, who wants a S20FE now. Also kicking for myself for waiting for the $50 Subscription letter which only arrived today.

            • @sslc: This is so annoying. I'm still going to try get something through support.

              • @Bazzaaa: Unless they change it back we are all out of luck. :-(

                • @sslc: I can't even get the trade in part to work. Keep getting an error message with that too.

                  • @Bazzaaa: Honestly speaking they should allow it, because not everyone can perform the trade in, hence giving those with broken phones the loyal code to use.

With your trade in, only do it at the end of the checkout process and make sure your Adblock is disabled.

                  • @Bazzaaa: Make sure you enter debit/credit card details in the app

    • RIP.

Well I finally got my shipping notice from Samsung: "Your goods are on the way!"
after it has been delivered. So don't worry if you have not received a shipping notice :-)

  • Has anyone knows how to buy the Samsung care + with 50% discount after purchased? Thank you

    • Did you end up getting it? I'd like to do the same as I forgot to add it when I bought mine

      • Nope, they said it has to be in the same transaction. They suggested me to cancel the order and re-order (What a joke). I didn't cancel it because of the colour I want was out of stock. Sad><

  • My ($389!) S21 128GB arrived today. Comes with a USB-C to C cable so plugged it in to the S9 and the SmartSwitch app took over and transferred all settings etc quite simply. When I swapped the SIM, I took the case off the S9 and the glass back was cracked I did not even know! So I am thinking maybe the plastic back on the S21 is a better option than glass after all. I got a white one and it looks cool enough. Will get a clear case for it. Next step is worrying about the return scenario. For the $60 trade amount, I'd rather keep the S9 as a backup.

    • For the $60 trade amount, I'd rather keep the S9 as a backup.

Turn it into a 7/11 chopper and you'll save $100 easily in 2-3 months!

    • +2

So I am thinking maybe the plastic back on the S21 is a better option

I've loved the poly-carbonate cases ever since Nokia first used it on the N9, way back when. Not at all like cheaper plastic.
And glass backs have been a dumb idea ever since - guess who? Which company is always the first to add fragile but aesthetically pleasing design elements?
And Samsung is dumb enough to copy them.

  • Got the trade in code and 50$ working. stuck in 200$ code, code given not working, any one facing the challenge?

    • +1

Yep according to a previous comment apparently you can only get the $250 advertised discount OR the $200 voucher discount NOT both, looks like they've updated the website accordingly. I should have got the Ultra the other day when they still seemed to be working :-(

      • Same!

        • Same, saved me thousand dollars

    • See above comment for the loyalty code change they made.

    • I got back onto chat and asked for a working code, and after 2 new codes, it worked. Don't leave chat until you've checked that it works

      • Is the trade in part working for you? I can't register my device for trading in.

      • Did you manage to complete the checkout process?

      • So the deal still works?

      • I tried around 10pm last night and the $200 code wouldn't work

  • Help needed. I purchased two separate orders with this deal. Both in my name but sent to different email addresses. I contacted Samsung to see if they could change one of the invoices from my name to my husbands then he could claim it on his tax return…. anyway the answer was no. The option I have is to send it back (14 day change of mind) and re-order but I've already done the trade up phone under the now wrong tax invoice. No response from the email contact. Any ideas… or maybe I just suck it up. 🤣

    • +1

the name doesnt matter unless its over $1000 but then again im thinking of invoice for TRS scheme when you travel overseas.

    • +1

My accountant has previously indicated it doesn't matter which name is on the invoice (ie. it's reasonable a spouse might buy something like a phone on your behalf). You are more likely to need to be able to prove the % utilisation of the device for work purposes with some sort of usage log.

  • +1

So once u received the email to send the phone back. What is everyone doing after this if they plan to keep the phone. Do u guys reply back to them and tell them u won't be sending the phone back or do u just ignore their email and do nothing?

    • +1

I've just ignored it, waiting to see if they charge the credit card or whatever :-)
