    Few things to note:
Micro USB Port, Mediatek processor, 720p screen, Android 9.0 out of the box, only one lens out of the three that is useful but also mediocre.
You get what you pay for.

    • +9

      Micro USB Port

      720p screen

For what it's worth those are probably not cons for the target market (screen would use less power).

      • +8

Yeah, honestly a 5K mAh battery is pretty alright, but when it's combined with a 720 screen, this sucker could last a while potentially. I dig.

    • $125

    How much to unlock?

    • +3

      Unlocking other Mobile Devices:

Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC, etc.

A fee is charged to unlock the device, but the amount depends on how long your service has been active with us.

      • If connected for less than 6 months a $80 fee applies
      • If your handset has been continuously active for more than 6 monthly a $25 fee will apply
      • Will the $25 unlock fee apply if connected to Amaysim for 6 months?

        • Some more goodies: Has Band B5/850mHz for using on Telstra 3GX, 4GB RAM/64GB

Some things missing: No NFC, Android 9/Pie only, No dual band or ac wifi

Cheaper to buy an unlocked model from Amazon

  • +4

The price point is competitive, but it having 8 A53 cores and being carrier locked is a little disappointing.

    • +1

A53 cores have been in budget phones for a longtime. Snapdragon 410 utilised those type of cores. I had a $40 phone in 2014 that used the 4x A53 core setup, it was slow then, hardly could imagine using that in 2021. Usually these cheaper phones have a couple of bigger faster cores combined with slower cores to conserve battery in their SoCs and even those are still slow but much better than just relying on the now ancient A53 performance.

    • Did you expect it to have a beefier CPU and non-carrier locked at this price point?

      • +1

Yes, comparable phones have both been unlocked and in a similar price range. They've also offered far more performant A76 cores.

      • I expect tech to improve even at the lower end over time. These A53 core SoCs have been around a very long time and yes the lower end now does have better offerings.

        • It hasn't? This is just an older model of mobile phone.

I have this phone. I got it unlocked for $239 after my Huawei Nova 3i suddenly died (but was fixed under warranty).

I'm very happy with the phone. My wife has the Galaxy S9 and the display on that is noticeably better.

When I scroll there is some buffering on occasion, but really very minor.

I mostly use it as a phone, text and web browsing. I've not tried to play games on it. The minor buffering on the browser suggests that top end games will be problematic, but that's not my thing anyhow.

$124.72 is a nutso price if being locked to Optus isn't a problem. The headphones are pretty trash I think. Only tried them once and they didn't fit my ears.

    • Does it get updated?

    • You got it unlocked for $239? Bargain.

    • Doubt an oled s9 screen is inferior

  • Can someone suggest the cheapest monthly prepaid service that will work for this handset with more than 1GB data per month?
Does it have to be specifically an optus SIM or other MVNO SIM able to work with this?
    Thanks

    • +3

Not sure if it works but this Amaysim 6 month 125GB prepaid deal for $40 after cashback is pretty awesome.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/608219

My guess is it should work.

      • +2

        It will

        • Thanks, great deal

          • +5

@[Deactivated]: Prob best to use Cashrewards as it's confirmed working by TA.

            • +1

@WatchNerd: this runs rings around the oppo a52 for value. wait 6 months and $25 unlock. great deal

  • Would Coles sim work on this?

    • Yes

      • +1

Do all Optus MVNO SIM Cards work in Optus locked phones.
Eg: Coles, Amaysim, CatchConnect, Circles, Dodo, Moose?

        • Should do. it's a network lock.

          • @steinmeister: Thanks! I think because Optus doesn't differentiate like Telstra - Retail v/s Wholesale. Telstra locked phones work only with Boost as its the only MVNO having full Telstra Retail network access. Others such as Belong, Aldi Mobile, Woolworths Mobile, Lycamobile SIMs do not work on Telstra locked devices.

  • +1

Not a bad price although from gsmarena the details show no nfc and fingerprint reader.

I would spend a little more and get the realms c3 for nfc, finger print reader and the g70 Soc.

For anyone wondering about the real-life performance of this phone:

    Battery:

Usage: 5,000MAH should be absolutely amazing. 3 days worth of claims usage should translate to ~2 days of usage

Charging: 10w charging, paired with a battery this huge = SLOW CHARGING SPEED
For $125, this should be expected. Prepare to charge overnight :)

    Performance:

As others on this thread have stated, performance isn't the 'best', however, I must clarify this commonly mistaken issue. The Helio P35 chip found on this phone is more than sufficient for any basic/medium usage, and will even be able to play light/medium gaming. The close to stock Android experience means less bloatware, in turn providing some decent performance. If you make sure not to overload the phone with background processes and running services, the 4GB RAM and decently powered octa-core processor will surprise you

    Display:

This is one area where the phone shines. For $125, this phone still sports a modern, small bezel design, paired with a 720P screen. 720P may seem like an issue here, but this is actually incorrect. While the resolution is 'lower' than you'd wish for, the viewing angles and colours are actually fairly good. Decent colours, viewing angles, and 269PPI on a $125 phone is definitely a highlight of this phone.

    Camera

Don't let the triple-lens fool you two of these lenses are for 'macro' and 'depth' functions, two features that aren't used very often on a phone. The main lens is a 16MP shooter, which has fairly low-performance video quality (1080P 30FPS). Don't expect much from this camera :(

    Software

As stated previously, the software on this phone is a fairly stock Android 9 version, meaning the phone has minimised bloatware. Android 9 is fairly old, however, at the end of the day, this version of Android will do the job, and for most, won't even be an issue :)

    Design

Personally, I quite like the blue gradient on the back of the phone… This would really be a personal preference tho. The design placement of the speaker at the back of the phone could mean that you might accidently muffle the sound while watching videos. Additionally, this speaker is a fairly loud and quite average sounding. Overall, the design doesn't reflect the cost of this phone

  • Good for google maps?

    • Yup. Big screen, decent enough processor. It should be perfect for Google Maps actually :)

  • +1

Considering the price point if you can live without nfc ( i use one as a backup gaming device), its a pretty decent budget phone for the price. Arguably one of the best value at this price point (unlock fee not withstanding if you dont use optus). The only other comparable phone is Oppo A52 which has its own issues…Forgot to add — get a screen protector if you plan to use it as a main phone… the display is easy to scratch …

    • With Optus, will they provide free unlock code after a year. Also, how is the 'year' calculated? From comments, I see that it depends on the time it was registered in their 'system', not necessarily the purchase date. What to tell then on Live Chat?

  • Good for helicopter use?

    • +1

      Nah, only has airplane mode.

    • +1

I don't even know how to answer this… In what aspect of 'helicopter use' are you talking about hahaha

      • Fuelwatch helicopter

  • +1

This would actually make a good dash display for my sim rig. Hard to find a cheap screen and case for much less

    • Just wondering, what app do you use for your sim rig? I got a few cheap screens lying around, however, I can't find any app which impresses me when it comes to sim rigs (Which work well with Forza) :)

  • Bought one last week with $20 discount voucher that was posted here so $105. The phone updated to android 10 and I'm happy enough with it.
I am on Catch and it works while locked. The price has been all over the place for the last few weeks - now a t$219 due to the interest from here.
I also bought a realme C3 for $112, that has now gone up too..

    • Did you apply the 'Free $30 recharge' on the included Optus SIM? I see you mentioned Catch, so did you activate the Optus SIM in another phone? Do we still get the Free $30 recharge if the bundled Optus SIM is activated using any other phone? How does it work, is it applied during activation, before the SIM gets activated, i.e. do we get to choose (Epic Data / Epic Vaue / etc.)?

      • Didn't bother with the optus recharge as I am on Catch 365 day plan.

        • Was the realme C3 also Optus prepaid from Amazon for $112?

          • @ozhunter68: Yep. Price on that went down to $112 when I bought, it then went over $200, now its at $164.
