      • Thanks, I will if they reply…still waiting.

Hi guys and gals…. help please.

I just bought this exact same one with rtx 2070 few weeks ago. Un opened in yhr box as I have been away. Then that exact same one goes on a discount (250 bucks cheaper). And now this new one… with 3070.

Do you think given its past 15days Dell return policy, can I return the old one and get this new one.?

Thanks in advance…I dont have buyers remorse… its just..cheaper and more next generation nvidia card.

    Thank you.

    • Dell eBay has a 30 days change of mind return

      • With a restocking fee

        • I have written proof that they don't do restocking fee on the ebay store from a rep if you want it

          • @ln28909: Thanks bud…. I think just out of 30 days… it was bought and then took some time to arrive and I was away. Thanks. But would appreciate that email.

        • Pretty sure the Dell eBay listings say free 30 day returns which means 30 days after delivery and the seller pays for return postage. In this case eBay will not let them get away with not refunding the full amount.

          • @lukethefish: So should I initiatw the return on ebay or wait for Dell to accept the return in an email. Cutting it close… delivery date was 28 oct.. lol.

  • Unfortunately im not well versed in the PC field. It seems the majority are claiming its an awesome deal. Whether they are praising the deal based on work purposes or gaming purposes, I have no idea. Is this capable of handling gaming and streaming at the same time? Also what is an acceptable upload speed for streaming? I am with telstra and i get 50 down and 16 up. Thanks

    • +1

This is very capable as a workhorse, gaming and streaming at the same time. I would definitely recommend nbn 50/25 at the minimum for simultaneously streaming and gaming.

      • Ok thanks :)

  • +2

Pulled the trigger, thanks heaps OP!

    • You're welcome

  • +1

Wow, if I was looking for a full box, this would be a very sweet deal for me. As it is, it's still a great deal for anyone who is….

  • For such a powerful system, 16GB of RAM seems oddly low. With Dell possibly using OEM modules, getting 32GB of RAM will likely mean getting rid of the 2 existing modules. = money lost

    • 32 gb = $150. Not the worst outcome…

      • Exactly -y ou can't really say you're paying Dell tax on the existing 16 GB when the price of the components seperately is at least as much as this deal.

  • +10

Have to stop looking at this deal….

  • is this faster than ryzen?

  • +2

Someone tell me the cooling in this will be ok

    • Lol me too Puhleeease :)
Might have to get the drill out.

      • Yes going by the casing. The same has been used with all the other cpu and GPU combinations and it's hot in there with the stock coolers and single chasis fan

        Still I good deal though

    • Look at the bright side. You can take this bad boy aprt and put it together again like it's supposed to.

  • Whats the standard Dell warranty on this?

    • 1 year, in op.

      • Thanks!

        • You're welcome :)

  • Any good for crypto mining?

  • +3

Damn! People are so rich on Ozb. I am trying everything I can for a few dollars and you got people spend $2000 just like that…..

    • Watch em sell 400K worth of Pc's in like 6 hours.

    • have you seen people spend $500 just for a CPU cooler?
or perhaps a controller for $289?
and they say we're going into recession …

  • Just watched the marketing video on this bad boy… claims "Infinite Upgradability" around the 16 second mark when showing the cooler being put in place.. go into the customise/buy options on the dell site and sure enough their is no upgradability options to the internals lmao classic DELL!

    • I think they mean that you will be able to upgrade with the new parts in the future.

    • +1

      Yeah, DIY upgradeability.

They got rid of customisable builds some years ago.

  • Damn Dell for listing a same-build-but-2070S-card sucker deal the day before, to get rid of their old cards.

Trying to cancel so I can buy this instead, but their customer service fobbed me off until tomorrow and they aren't responding to my ebay message.

I guess I could just buy this and then assume I can get the other cancelled, but I'm not game to get stuck with both…

    • You have the 30 day return policy so it'll be in their best interest to just cancel the last order instead of going through the rigamorale :)

    • +1

Valid for 5 days, wait it out
Gonna see if the other ozb PC vendors respond to this deal

      • Is there a risk though that this gets sold out?

        • buy now, think later.

    • +1

They can take up to 48hrs to respond. Just contact ebay seller and await a reply. If they haven't shipped it prior to your comment, you are entitled to a refund/return.

    • You won't get stuck with both since Dell eBay do free 30 day returns.

    • Pulled the trigger and sent a message to cancel the previous order.
      Cheers for the advice here.

  • Any way to know what motherboard this is? And whether it is compatible with higher speed RAM? Should I be concerned about gaming and streaming on this with a 500w PSU? And is there a way to know what brand PSU? Thanks.

    • No, no, maybe, no.

    • It should be fine. I update op with info as I get it.

      • Is there any place to add an extra nvme ssd? I have a 970evo and I don't wanna waste it.

    • +2

they are all OEM parts, so the brand is Dell. And concern, yes, but, with some tweaking, you should still have a stable system, though may underperformed compared to other systems of similar specs

  • Is this overclockable?

    • No.

  • +1

Just sent a message to Dell requesting to cancel my order.. I don't think I'll be happy with non upgradable 500w psu and don't want to risk the overheating problem.

  • +4

I nearly want to neg this deal because it's so good I am having trouble resisting.

Hopefully it sells out because I really don't need it but so desperately want it.

  • +2

Is this machine good for machine learning applications? Thinking maybe I could set it up at home and remote desktop for my computationally heavy scripts.

    • Don't know but I can't think that you'd get more power for the price.

    • Computationally heavy scripts?

  • Hey first time poster, long time viewer.

I have an older Alienware Area 51 R2 system which I love, but is getting a bit slow with the 6800k and older components.
I’ve always wanted to upgrade it but because of the propriety dell parts it’s almost impossible. However, I saw this bargain and thought I could drop the dell motherboard and components from this 8940 into the A51 case (which has awesome cooling and 1000w psu).

Does anyone see a problem I am missing with this plan before I pull the trigger?

    • +1

If you're handy with a dremel, soldering, tap and die pull the trigger.

      • Ha! Gunna be a bit of a challenge I think. I’m hoping dells weird PSU pin outs haven’t changed. If still the same it shouldn’t be too bad. Done plenty of standard builds so this will be an more interesting Xmas holiday build! Don’t think I’ll need to pull out a dremmel or solder kit though. If I have to reset with tap and die I’ll give up and put them back together!

        • They use ATX connector.
Off set screws will probably be in a different location (drill, tap n die).
Wires might need be longer (soldering).

          My plan: ikea pc cupboard + 2 x 20cm fans… open case.

  • Don't you hate those Dell motherboards that have the damn usb and front panel ports built into the motherboard?

    • Yea - definitely a downside to buying dell if you want to upgrade later

  • Hi Op, Thanks for organizing this deal. Can you please confirm the number and type of ports that are on the RTX 3070

    • It'll probably have 1 hdmi and 3 dp ports. That's the standard on 3070

  • Any idea what RTX 3070 card it is? FE?

    • I doubt a founders, possibly a msi gpu, but don't quote me on that.

    • Dell OEM GPU, most likely a blower style

  • +1

    Thanks OP, purchased.

What hasn't been mentioned is the physical size of the unit - it's comparatively tiny for what it's packing. That is a big plus for those short on desk space like myself. Could even sling it under a desk.

Yes I know this factor doesn't bode well for cooling but hoping Dell's bragging about optimised airflow keeps things from melting too much..

  • A 500W PSU for a 10700K and RTX 3070 seems slightly underpowered.

    • Yep I recon you’d need to be careful adding components that draw power or any overclocking at all.
Makes me wonder why the “k” variant of the cpu is even there.
Pity we can’t request upgrade parts like on the dell website - I guess it’s 2K for a reason!

    Perfect.
    Goodbye Techfast.

  • Can you add RAM to it? It has 4GBx2 but has 2 empty slots. Can I add 32GBx2 in the remaining slots to get 16+64GB RAM ?
PC noob trying to make sense of https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/xps-8940-desktop_setup-guide_e…

    • +1

      16GB, 2x8GB, DDR4, 2933Mhz

      • Yes thanks that's what it comes with,
Can I add 32x2 in the additional 2 modules?

        • +2

It has 4 x udimm slots and can handle a total capacity of 128gb. So yes you can use 32gb sticks if you wish.

          • @LiMaaa: Which RAM brand and model would you recommend that would be compatible with this PC? I have read that it is a 2 x Hynix 3200Mhz 8GB CL22. Those appear to be hard to come across. I've bought one and would like to upgrade with an additional 2 x 8GB.

            • +4

@tabletop12: These are the memory configurations that are supported.

              ● 8 GB, 2 x 4 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM,
              dual-channel
              ● 8 GB, 1 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
              ● 16 GB, 2 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM,
              dual-channel
              ● 16 GB, 1 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
              ● 32 GB, 1 x 32 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
              ● 32 GB, 2 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM,
              dual-channel
              ● 64 GB, 2 x 32 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM,
              dual-channel
              ● 64 GB, 4 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM,
              dual-channel
              ● 128 GB, 4 x 32 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM,
              dual-channel

NOTE: The computer is shipped with 3200 MHz memory. However, with Intel Core i3/i5 processors, it is limited to
2666 MHz. With Intel Core i7/i9 processors, it is limited to
              2933 MHz.

So to answer your question, as long as the memory you're buying is udimm (unregistered buffered memory), which most consumer memory is and fits in with those configurations it will work fine. There is no need buying anything over 3000mhz because the speed will be wasted. Corsair vengeance lpx or crucial ballistix are great memory and frequently on sale.

If I were buying I'd look at corsair or crucial, 2 x 16gb 3000mhz memory with perhaps a timing of CL15 to get the best bang for my buck.

              • @LiMaaa: Do you know why the '32GB, 4 x 8 GB' set up is not supported?

                • @1shot1hit: No idea tbh, I'd assume it's something to do with dual channel vs quad channel and stability in those configurations.

  • Shouldn't all 3070 GPU have DisplayPort 1.4a and HDMI 2.1?

I'm just curious as to why this PC has DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4; not sure if it's a typo but seems quite outdated for a 3070 GPU.

    • +1

      good question

    • I think there is fine print in the ad which says ports may differ depending the type of GFX.

      • +1

Ports may vary depending on graphics card.

so they didn't update the ports specs accordingly to the GPU … hmmmm very strange way of marketing i must say.

    • +1

As stated above. It'll probably have 1 hdmi and 3 display ports, that is the standard for 3070.

  • I don't play much PC games these days but would absolutely jump on this if I did.

  • Is this more suitable for graphics designing or 4k gaming?

    • It is suited for both. The high end gpu and CPU processing power allow you to game in 4k or do graphics design. The power is in your hands!

      • -1

You can run 4k on the 3070 @ 60fps, you may have to limit some games to medium-high settings, depending on how demanding those games are.

  • Anyone know how good Dell's Free returns policy is? I.e. If heating/power is a real issue with this desktop after trying it out with games, can I still return for a full refund within 30 days?

    • +1

All Dell products come with a standard one-year Manufacturer's warranty.

    • If you have issues with the system, you are covered by Dell's 1yr warranty. If it's a change of mind, I believe you have 30 days to return the product, although there may be shipping/restocking fees involved.

  • +2

Got one - thanks. This will be my first PC in 15 years. Given that Dell is not upgradeable friendly, can anyone please recommend a RAM that would be compatible with this system. I want to put an additional 2 x 8GB into this PC. I have read that Crucial should be fine but am unsure which model I should buy.

    • this guy seem to have it figured out.

    • +2

Any reputable brand should work, e.g Crucial, Hynix, Samsung, Kingston, GSkill, etc

In my 30 years of using PC, I have yet to encounter a set of RAM purchased from a reputable store (e.g MSY, Centrecom) that doesn't work with my various custom-built or
      vendor built PCs.

    • From what's been said 4 x 8GB isn't supported, so can't throw in another 2 X 8GB. Seems stupid, since it's able to take 4 x 16GB, or 4 x 32GB.
