      WHY KEANU🤩🤩

    • +3

Not really, the recent Lenovo S540 13 deal for $974 was a lot better.

6 core laptop vs quadcore of this deal
QHD IPS 300nits 72 %NTSC panel vs FHD 220 nits 45 % NTSC WVA panel
      SSD the same size

16gb RAM is the only thing this laptop has going for it vs 8gb.

Battery is smaller too on this laptop

  • -2

    Good price good spec

  • +3

    You're breathtaking thanks TA

    • +2

      You're all breathtaking

  • What’s the battery life like on these?

  • No full name on the coupon code this time ;)

    • DELLYARSE or 16GBRAMARSE

    • +1

it was a tough choice between discount code options, but in the end DELLARSE didn't make it by a little margin.

    • HR redflagged the codes.. lol

  • +17

could you please confirm which panel is installed. this model comes with 2 non-touch options:

    • 220nit FHD 45% NTSC
    • 300nit FHD 72% NTSC

makes a huge difference, but Dell doesn't specify which.

it will be a fair option with the latter

    • Interested in the above but fear it will sell out before it's answered

    • +11

      220nit FHD 45% NTSC
      it is

      just checked with DELL chat

      • +6

        no deal then.

        crappy panel.

      • -1

So is basically the same low quality non IPS or VA panel. WVA is just Dell marketing speak for slightly better viewing angles TN panel. General rule to follow, if they don't mention IPS, it's most likely a low quality panel, otherwise they would put it all over the sales page.

        • +3

          nope, wrong.

"WVA" in dellspeak is IPS. but then there's good IPS and crappy IPS.

"LED backlit", especially if it's not accompanied by "WVA" is a dead ringer for TN

          • -3

@shabaka: I think you needed to speak to the Dell rep before posting your comment. They advised me it's a Wide Viewing Angle TN panel.

            • +6

              @shellshocked: hahahahaha

              there's no such thing.

              • @shabaka: As I said it's the response I got from the Dell Sales Rep via the chat. Why don't you ask them yourself.

                • +3

@shellshocked: I know everything they sell, most of the time better than they do.

yeah it's good to chat to them to confirm an exact specification. but don't expect them to have actual technical knowledge.

what do you think, everyone in call center has an IT degree? that would be an expensive call centre

                  • @shabaka: Based on what you are saying the Dell sales rep don't have access to datasheet beyond what you and I see on the website. So Dell doesn't have something similar to psref.lenovo.com where you can tell if it's a TN or IPS panel for a particular SKU.

            • +2

@shellshocked: yeah WVA is only IPS for Lenovo, I think

              • +2

@ln28909: The Inspiron 5000 15 inch I received a month or so ago has a BOE nv15n3d panel, which is IPS. Dell appears to be understating some of the specs as it actually is specified by manufacturer as 287nit. One downside for this panel is that the PWM flickering on this panel in low brightness level is quite obvious to some, having said that, you probably won't want to use this panel in low brightness settings though as it's brightness isn't really that high to start with.

      • You are a gentleman

  • +2

Should we wait for black Friday deals or grab one now ?

  • +1

    “Whoa.”

    • Haha very good isn't he a peach of an actor

  • +1

does this laptop have issues with thermals like other inspirons?

  • good deal but no discrete GPU

    • +1

Some ozbargainers are impossible to please. You want a discrete GPU, then you need to set a realistic budget……

  • +2

Thanks for this. Any XPS deals on the horizon?

  • Microsoft 365 Family - Annual Subscription (for up to 6 users) + $161.72 !!!

    • Cant tell if you think that's cheap or expensive

      • Its AU$129.00/ year on MS site itself and was on sale for 77 from Amazon EU.

        • +1

Yeh, its even cheaper at bing lee. Sounded like you thought $161 was cheap

          • +1

@8azinga: On OZB, if someone mentions a price thats even RRP, its to be assumed its NOT cheap! This is wayyy above RRP, how did you assume I was thinking its cheap?

  • +1

    4-Cell Battery, 53WHr (Integrated)

  • +2

    no dedicated graphics card

  • Argg just realised the display is non-touch :(

    • Also non IPS and dull as all sh!t.

  • +4

As above 220nit FHD 45% NTSC - something to consider.

  • Any cash back on the these codes TA?

  • Thanks TA, have been monitoring the laptop for a while and this is a good discount

  • +1

Decent laptop, bought one for work.

The keyboard is silver and the keyboard backlight is a light colour, the key labels are light grey coloured as well. Typing and seeing what the keys are is a pain in the ass because everything is all blended in a light/white/silver colour on the keyboard.

    • is your employer that bad that they did not provide you with a laptop and you had to fork out your hard earn for it?

      • +6

I bought this for one of my employees to use.

        • oh well done, you are a good employer

        • +3

          mic drop

  • +3

The recent Lenovo S540 deal was far better for lower price.

  • Bought this instead for my daughter, hope the battery last more than 6 hours…..

    • I wonder what's the point of a 32GB Optane cache with a 512GB SSD. Unless it's a really crappy SSD.

      • +2

I hope its not a fancy word for sshd😱

Well it could be a first and the last after trying out.

$1k Acer laptop stolen after using for 2 years😔
$1k Toshiba laptop 5th year still running 👍
        $3 k surface book 2, 2nd year still running 😐
        $4 k alienware laptops, screen died after 1 year👎🤬

        • +1

No, it's an Optane H10 where Intel pairs 32GB of Optane with a slow QLC SSD. The Optane in this drive kinda acts like the SLC cache on some other SSDs to speed up writes and etc.

          • @systema: Thanks….now I know to look for a proper ssd on black friday.

  • Looking to spend $1000-$1200 on a low budget gaming laptop for my partner. The games she wants to plan aren't demanding at all, i'm guessing something like this won't be suitable? Would a standalone GPU be required?

    • +5

This definitely won't be suitable. Unfortunately Intel on board graphics is not good for gaming. If you want a laptop which can game without a dedicated graphics card, look for one with an AMD Ryzen 4500U CPU and above. Plenty of 3rd party reviews on YouTube showing the games it can play. Just type the CPU name and game(s) she plays.

      • +1

Okay, great. Thank you for the advice! Will definitely look into AMD integrated graphics, while hoping for a low budget gaming laptop to go on sale.

        • @shellshocked forgot to show his link to you. 😂

          • @O O: It's not like they said what games their partner played. If you want to see a Ryzen 4500U game, watch the Tech Epiphany channel on YouTube.

            https://youtu.be/Yfx5n3dZUJA

            • @shellshocked: Don't get me wrong, I meant you kept track of good deals on Ryzen laptops, and shoud gave @frayin some reference.

        • +2

If you have an education account. The below deal is the great for a very powerful laptop that can also game without a dgpu.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/578125

          • @shellshocked: I just looked up the requirements for the game she will primarily be playing.

This requires either an Nvidia GeForce 400 or newer, an AMD Radeon HD 5000 Series or newer, or Intel HD Graphics with an Intel Haswell processor or newer. Will also require 2 GB Vram.

Will the Lenovo integrated be sufficient you think?

            • @Frayin: Those requirements are quite low. GeForce 400, Radeon HD 5000 and Intel Haswell were tech from 2010 and 2011. The onboard Radeon Vega GPU in the Lenovo laptop shouldn't have an issue if that's all the requirements are.

              • @shellshocked: Yeah she intends to use a third-party client for oldschool runescape. The requirements are very low indeed.

Being able to play a few other indy games etc will be nice too.

                • @Frayin: OSRS on runelite? Even my ryzen 3600 and gtx 1070 chugs on Fossil Island. But the iGPU of the lenovo will be fine for most places.

  • +2

The Inspiron 5000 15 inch which was spec'ed with the 220 nits screenI received a month or so ago has a BOE nv15n3d panel, which is IPS. Dell appears to be understating some of the specs as it actually is specified by manufacturer as 287nits. One downside for this panel is that the PWM flickering on this panel in low brightness level is quite obvious to some, having said that, you probably won't want to use this panel in low brightness settings though as it's brightness isn't really that high to start with.

  • I'd avoid 10th Gen laptops at this stage. 11th Gen is going to bring a host of improvements, namely with the integrated GPU, which is apparently 3-4x faster than the Iris Pro GPU in the 9th/10th Gen. If you're spending this amount on a laptop - wait out and grab an 11th Gen, or a Ryzen.

    • +2

no joke. This deal is far better for $142 extra.
You don't need a student beans account. Read the first comment.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/578125
It does seem a lot of people have nfi.

    • Will the new integrated GPU be faster than geforce MX 250?

      • Based on Notebookcheck review of an actual Asus Zenbook with 11th gen, and not the Intel sample, it is not faster than an MX250. Just look up the UFD tech review of the Dell XPS 13 with the i7 11th Gen via YouTube. It stutters in Fortnite around the minute 5:50 mark at 720p.

        • +1

oh yeh cool. I got a dell vostro 5490 which has i7 10510U, 1tb SSD and geforce MX250 for $849 last month. I'm pretty happy with that deal now.

        • Newer real laptop test: https://youtu.be/fo8l66sHnpI?t=335

Fortnite 1080p low, ~60fps (with drops down to 30fps?). Seems they've ironed out most of the bugs with fortnite with newer drivers.

          • @incipient: the thing is, the 11th gen intel will probably start at around $1300+

The 10th i7 can be had for $900

            • @Homr: Oh yeah. You'd only want the 11th gen if you wanted that extra gpu punch. This specific laptop is amazing value.

  • Thinking of pulling the trigger on this one. Does anyone know if this is a touch screen or if there is the option for a touch screen?

  • I bought one of these about 6 weeks ago. Unfortunately the CPU died within a few days and Dell wanted to replace it with a refurbished one! I requested a refund and it took about 2 weeks for a courier to pick up the laptop and then process the refund. First and last Dell experience for me.

  • Anymore feed back on Dell Build Quality.
