Should be able to get t490s at this price nowadays
    Nice units though
I have a couple and they are solid.

    • -1

      Whats differences betweeen 480 490?

      • +5

        s and s

        T490s is slimmer
        Better screen
        Much better battery life

        But has soldered ram

I do prefer the keyboard on the t480s

      • +6

some of the features that i like with T480s over T490s
        - 1 RAM slot for upgrade
        - SD card slot
        - Ethernet port

    • Yeah I just bought one 2 days ago from ACT’s eBay store for $385.

  • +1

@MaxDirect Ozbargain description says "We're offering a Lenovo ThinkPad T490s…" but ozbargain title and ebay says it's a T480s

    OP has fixed it

Day and night, in terms of performance. 8th gen Intel is on their last leg.

    • isn't L series are budget range compared to T series?

      • +2

Yes though current day Lenovo is confused with their product lines … often they don't have the same distinctions they used to have (maybe T series chasis sometimes is made from magnesium alluminium). One thing is consistent though, the L-series always has 2 ram slots and Wifi is also swappable.

        • Last L series I have is the one with soldered RAM.

          • +1

@FujinShu: oh yeah, the 13inchers (L13) might have soldered ram but I L14 / lL15 should all be socketed

            • @fatpotato123: Can you replace/upgrade the SSds in the L series ?

              • +1

@Rob-4x4: Yes for sure. One thing to keep in mind is up to L14 gen 2 the SSD form factor is the more common 2280 type but for L14 Gen 3 and above they switched to the smaller less common 2242 form factor.

      • Budget range is E series.

        • +2

L is not bad and will last for most of not all. T is just exceptionally built.

Sourced - personal experience from E to T/X for many years.

  • aren't the newer T14s around this price range?

    • I haven't seen the t14s this cheap

Is this a better buy? I'm a poor as shit uni student and need a laptop asap for quizzes and exams. If this is a good deal, I'll jump on it.

          • @cogu5: Yeah for sure this is better (especially if you have ebay plus)

        • Any RAM slots to upgrade in this or is it soldered? Also can you change the SSD?

          • @sav11: From what I can tell it's soldered. Yeah, SSD is upgradable. Apart from those cheapo Chinese eMMC-based storage devices, and Macs (let's hope that doesn't become a trend with PCs) I don't think there's any laptop which doesn't let you upgrade storage.

            • +1

@fatpotato123: Thanks, yep that tracks with the quick research I just did too. Pity as soldered RAM is a deal-breaker for me.

              • @sav11: 16 is not enough ram for you? Or just peace of mind thing

  • +1

I'd like something for <$300 to claim easily on tax. Any recs?

    • +2

If you have eBay Plus, try this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/196604556492

Much better value than what’s being offered here, IMHO.

      • +1

Yeah well another failed attempt from max trading @maxdirect

      • Thanks - it's OOS, but do you have any experience whether the B-grade (non-refurb) models sold by this company are generally OK?

        • I don’t I’m afraid but generally look for Grade A/excellent as it tends to avoid (but not completely rule out) any disappointment post purchase.

  • +2

This laptop wont last you 6 months. Don’t waste your money

    • Could you elaborate?

I bought two X1 Carbon gen3 8GB in 08/2023 for $500 for my highschool kids. One is still going strong. Another has BSOD once/twice a day, complaining about the M2. SSD. I tried to change the SSD but no luck. Ended up buying another one for <$200 (this one has 16GB RAM though).

      • What’s BSOD

Nvm googles it : blue screen of death

  • +3

    This is 2024 price.

  • +2

thinkpads are good but an 8th gen intel laptop from 2019 in 2025 should be closer to $200 after a 15-20% discount

    not a good deal

just get a new 2025 laptop for $500

    • +4

They cut a lot of concerns to get to the $500 price point, almost certainly they will cheap out on battery, and all the components don't run efficiently with the battery, leading to excessive heat and short usage time.

      • +2

        Agree - wouldn't recommend a $500 laptop to anyone I like.

    • +1

Yep, I paid $205 for this (with 8gb ram) in November. Very happy with it for my purposes.

      • How'd you get that price?

        • +1

Was $255 with a -$50 eBay deal. From Technology Locker.
Ah ok, looking at it again I was wrong, it is an i5 8350U, not an i7 8650U. It's maybe 10% slower from quick research, a non-issue for me.

Looking now I've seen that model even cheaper on eBay ~$165. Sounds good if the condition is reasonable… ~$200 cheaper than this 😂

          • +1

@alxjpow: A steal if the battery holds!!

            • +1

@Fobsessive: Yep, and all user replaceable with genuine or cheap 3rd party, if not! Very happy customer here.

    • +1

agreed. I paid $370 for my T480s almost 2 years ago. i5 with 12GB ram so a little lower spec.

great laptop for the right use case though, just not a great deal in this case.

  • Very good! Just concerned about the battery.

    • +3

Lenovo batteries are easy to change, but eBay full of fakes, ignore "oem", "genuine", "original" in the description, just consider them generic.

When you buy one, use PayPal for 180-day protection. Probably the best chance to get something back if there's a problem with the battery and the seller refuses to remediate or simply ignores your messages.

eBay and credit card disputes don't stretch that long.

      • Ah, I appreciate the wisdom on that, wasn't aware.

Only takes printing a nice sticker and you can charge an extra 50%…

  • Got a T490S from this mob https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/881409
Good unit but the fingerprint reader doesn't work and they made no real effort to resolve it, just forwarding basic troubleshooting tips which didn't address the cause. If a fingerprint reader is important to you I'd suggest getting them to confirm it works before buying.

  • +1

I have an x1 carbon and love it.
Honestly best keyboards in the business

  • At this price, it's really expensive. This is not a deal and definitely not OzB worthy.

  • +2

This unit is fine, had one for work for a while. If you intend on using it with a mouse, be wary the air vent blows directly on your hand (if right-handed) and can get quite hot.

  • for goodness sake, please just let these poor T480s die….

  • +1

What's the difference between the x1 carbon, T14s and the T490s lines? Looking for <$600 laptop and I love Lenovo keyboards

    • +2

There might be exceptions, generally X, T, P are business grade laptops.

      • X - ultra portable
      • T - performance originated
      • P - workstation with dedicated graphics, replaces W series which at one point has a fold out side screen.

T14 is just upgrade from T490, because T500 denotes 15".

So T14 Gen 1, Gen 2, up to Gen 5 now.

Using a P16 for the past couple of years, while the keyboard is considerably better than most, can't type on it after getting used to mechanical keyboard with premium switches. So I also carry a keyboard along.

      • thank you for you insight!
