@jv: I'd just like to mention a real important point to keep in mind:

              • take care in drawing links however, it could be someone else with the same name
              • +1

                @Serapis:

                it could be someone else

                or it might not.

              • +3

@Serapis: I imagine jv is looking at the profile of Phung Lu on LinkedIn, a recent RMIT accounting graduate who lists himself as Director of "F.W. of Australia", the name seen on the building at the address on Google Maps. Clearly an enterprising bloke.

                • +1

@Morven: Yeah hoping to avoid getting to this stage lol… it seems that @phunglulu (instagram handle with connections to their instagram page) is the same as the linkedin person jv found…

*Edit: That could be the company, ASIC shows it's registered (need to pay to check further), and yeah, the google location (can sometimes be unreliable) is the same as their 'We are located at' address on their website. Someone in comments below actually got OP to post the registered name (case of tl;dr on my part)

      • +6

        There's the ABN

At the end of the day - they are simple, non-surgical masks. They are 2 or 3 layers fabric with some elastic to hold it to your head. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's part of the cottage industry of the year (decade?) and I'm happy to throw some money at a local company to make me some cloth masks than support an overseas factory (delivery in 4-6 weeks) or a random Etsy seller - neither of which I can necessarily trust, either.

That said, I'd trust ALL of them more than not wearing a mask at all OR in my own ability to make one.

I've ordered 10 masks and paid by PayPal so I can always claw back the money if things go pear-shaped.

      • +2

Nice detective work, I'm seeing this sort of thing happen a lot on Facebook too. Prices too good to be true and a business closing down sale, when the site was only created a few months ago.

If it was a .au site an ABN would have been mandatory.

Note that with reusable masks, you need to wash/sanitize it after each use for it to be useful for protection

Tell me more about the seemingly insatiable demand for face masks 25 years ago.

      • +20

Clothing and textiles for 25 years. No mention of making masks for 25 years. What's so wrong with a clothing and textile business taking advantage of making something that's in demand?

        • +4

          Exactly my point.

      • +3

so theyve got less than 2 weeks total experience in manufacturing masks…? awesome

    • +11

Yes. Domain is obviously about capitalising on the Covid-19 related demand for face masks. And that's okay right? Better than ordering from China and waiting a month for something the same price and horrible quality. An order that puts rice bowls in front of Chinese instead of feeding Melburnians who are hurting.

Our business is F.W. OF AUSTRALIA PTY LTD. This is just a brand made under our name.

      • -5

but you imply you have been making masks for 25 years….when in reality its less than 2 weeks

We manufacture clothing for some of the most well known brands in Australia.

….name some of these 'most well known brands that youve worked with over the last 25 years' ?

        • +2

I believe what this meant is that this company has been trading for 25 years.

However, going off the documents lodged to ASIC (just the free stuff at the bottom), it changed ownership sometime in 2016 - 2017.

        • +8

but you imply you have been making masks for 25 years

You are interpreting what has been said in your own way and its wrong. Here's what they actually said:

We have been in the clothing and textiles industry for over 25 years

Notice there is no indication of masks? In fact they explicitly say clothing and textile.

          • +2

@Phil22: …what would have been more accurate is

We have been manufacturing face masks for over 1 week.

            • +6

              @franco cozzo:

We have been manufacturing face masks for over 1 week.

Put yourself in their position and ask yourself if you would write that. They have every right to say that they have been making clothing for 25 years. Not wrong, not misleading and not inaccurate. In fact, it would be stupid not to advertise their experience. Would you leave out 25 years experience in your CV when applying for a job?

              • -2

@Phil22: yet….no mention of any of the 'most well known brands' theyve worked with.
                wouldnt that be worth advertising/publicising?

                • +1

                  @franco cozzo: confidential

                • @franco cozzo: definitely worth advertising but like @phil22 said, it might be confidential. it might not be, though i wouldn't auto assume the worst case scenario. most people aren't dodgy as

              • +1

@Phil22: Wouldn't say 25 years experience, would be more accurate to say that they're 25 years old and have approx 3 years experience.

                • +2

@Serapis: say the 2 co-owners had banded together to startup a company, each had 12 years experience.. hey presto, the new company has almost 25 years of experience!

                  /todayscontributionfromthemarketingteam

                  • @inamberclad:

                    25 years of experience!

Old joke from the software industry: 25 years of experience is 1 year repeated 25 times.

                • +1

@Serapis: You’re missing the point with advertising. It’s not about what’s most accurate. It’s about selling themselves the best they can so long as what they say is not misleading. Nothing misleading about what the company has said.

                  • +2

@Phil22: This is a family owned business for everyones information.

  • +5

They're not particularly proud of their 2 layer masks "We offer two types of face masks: 2-layered and 3-layered masks. We’re particularly proud of our three-layer face mask, which is water-resistant and washable."

  • +7

You are in luck, your items can be sent cheaply as letters, here's the official definition

We classify a letter as an item that:

    weighs less than 500g
    is no thicker than 20mm
contains flexible items - nothing rigid or inflexible
    has a rectangular shape
    is no bigger than a B4 envelope (260mm x 360mm x 20mm)

If your item doesn't fit this criteria, we'd classify it as a parcel. View domestic parcel services.

I had to check, because my local post office recently wanted 'extra postage' for a few eBay items they deemed not to qualify as letters. They met the size requirements but contained rigid items.

    • +7

THANK YOU! REALLY APPRECIATE IT! I'll quickly get this up and going.

      • +3

Surely you should know this already as your LinkedIn shows have been a Parcel Officer for AusPost for over 2 years.

I purchased masks from eBay with free shipping and they were only $5 per mask. You can do much better with your postage rates.

    • They met the size requirements but contained rigid items.

      Yeah, that's bollocks.

If you read their guidelines they recommend adding something rigid to protect delicate items like certificates etc.

  • +5

Better increase production, come Sunday 11:59PM night all victorians must wear masks outside.

    • +2

      Thank you for the update.

  • +1

Do they have a nose bridge wire? This would help to keep them in place and stop air fogging up glasses or hitting the eyes.

    • +2

Only our 3 Ply Pleated Face Mask has the nose bridge. They're not discounted, however, you can use our 10% discount code to help yourself out :)

  • Hey op, do they come with a non-woven fabric layer?

  • +4

My upvote for Australian made :)

  • +2

Not all face masks are equal. What you really want is surgical masks for better protection. A surgical mask usually has a three layers: the innermost layer used for absorbing moisture, the middle layer as a filter and the outermost layer repels water. Their 2 ply masks are purely made of cotton and the 3 ply ones have an additional polyester layer. Not being a d**k, just in case people after better protection and wondering this or surgical masks.

    • +1

What you really want is surgical masks for better protection.

Not if you're just going for a walk and social distancing.

  • +2

Any floral style? it looks like masks made out of men's underpants and boxers.

    • This is the problem i have while looking for some decent reusable masks — mens designs usually either just black (sold out often), blue or…..really very bland.

  • +10

Really loving all the mask hate recently.. These things are essentially the opposite purpose of an N95/surgical mask. A surgical mask is designed to protect the wearer from others so they obviously have to stop airborne particulate inbound.

These type of marks are to protect others from you. They stop basic water particles and their hitch hikers from landing on everything else… Plenty of recent studies around to prove that damn near any mouth/nose covering is better than none.

….can i just point out that for an aussie mask company called ' Australian Made Face Mask' you sure have terrible english rep! 😄

    eg

    Pumping 10,000 mask weekly

    …is that hygienic? 🤣

    • How many Australians do you know that English isn't their first language?

        Australian Made
        Australian Owned
        Proudly Made In Australia

..if youre going to market yourself like this i'd think being able to communicate accurately & effectively to your target demographic would be a pretty critical asset to have…especially from a rep soliciting our custom

        • The masks are made in china

  • The rate at which you're getting business these days should allow you to offer better shipping rates. The current shipping rate kills the deal for me. I upvoted for the price otherwise and because it's Australian made. I hope the fabric is made locally too, not made in china.

With high shipping volumes, Auspost does offer discounts to businesses.

    • +3

      and because it's Australian made.

These are same as ones I've been making. I just double up material so ends up 4 layers (2 circles).

    • so ends up 4 layers (2 circles).

Why not use 8 layers, just in case…

      • what? This is actually a practical link I provided for anyone interested in having a go at making their own. Unless you have good quality material, the design ends up a bit thin, 8 layers sound a bit thick

        • 8 layers sound a bit thick

Just the way jv likes it.

        • Thank you for the link. I will use it.

      • Why not use 8 layers

Because they are not Chinese. Might not be their lucky number.

  • Anyone used the link/s?

    1. I get a SSL certificate error (unknown issuer)
    2. If I continue, I get a malware warning from OpenDNS

Looking around, there is a site australianmadefacemasks.com that loads fine and seems legit, but the link from OP don't work for me, even just going to the home page.

    Shop with caution lads.

      Chandler, Never got that

      • No issues here either, it's just a Shopify page

    • Nothing wrong here, passes Quad9 as well.

      Nothing in virustotal;
      https://www.virustotal.com/gui/url/2c7d2faf6a17d47b8485f7a4c…

SSL is a stand LetsEncrypt, cert chain should work on most recent operating systems..

Maybe something is intercepting your traffic??

IP comes back as 23.227.38.32 (reverses to myshopify.com) from every DNS I checked…

    • OpenDNS is a terrible service, they flag any new domain as malware. Just use 1.1.1.2

The SSL certificate error will be because OpenDNS are screwing with the DNS record.

  • +1

shipping cost kills it for me. No deal.

  • +2

Shipping is dearer than the mask itself.
    NO DEAL!

  • +5

Order 2 x "3 - Ply face mask" I value the addition of the nose bridge on the 3 Ply compare to the 2Ply or other home made one. Yes, it is expensive for the postage and only 10% discount. Please consider many other places are either out of stock or even more expensive than this guy. I make the purchase. Don't be too harsh on him.

Next time i need a private investigator, am turning to ozbargain . Wait for another 30 minutes , you will see Phung Lu's gardener's mothers maiden name here.
May be they should post a MH370 here and read the comments to track down where the hell it has gone.

  • The stripey ones look like jocks lol

  • Any medical or industry expert could comment on the effectiveness of this mask?

    • About two clean socks of effectiveness. Socks might be better though, less gaps.

Composition: inner layer - 100% cotton, outer layer - 100% cotton.
Our face masks are non-medical grade

However, if there are any of you that have pressing concerns regarding the products, please do not hesitate to visit our website and send us through an email (https://australianmadefacemask.com/pages/contact-us). We will get back to you in 48 hours. Otherwise, we also have a Facebook page in which you are able to send messages. Where has the seller claimed or even vaguely inferred that these masks are for therapeutic use?

Only personal protective equipment (PPE) for therapeutic/clinical use are required to be TGA approved and registered.

You might as well ask if the product has INMETRO certification for masonry ceramic blocks distributed in Brazil.

Seriously - stop with the axe-grinding.

Hi Australian Made Face Mask team

I ordered two 2 ply masks on 30/07 and paid express shipping. 'Order is still being prepared' according to Australia Post tracking number. I live in Melbourne. Too much for paying $11.95 express shipping. Please don't say that its because of Australia Post's workload because I have been getting standard shipping orders pretty quickly and on time. Could you advise why there is so much delay? And yes both 2-ply masks were in stock when I ordered.

    • Could you please contact us via out "Contact Us" Page with your order number? I'll get to you ASAP

  • +1

I received mine today (NSW) Thanks OP :)

    • Any critical feedback would be awesome!

      • +1

It's what I expected and I'm happy with what I received except for one minor thing though. With the yellow one (not sure if it's for all coloured ones) is there a distinction as to which way you can wear it? It looks reversible. Understandably these are intended for 1 use and then a wash but sometimes I take my mask off whilst in the car and put it back on at the next stop/destination so it would help if I knew which side was the external facing.

        • +1

that being said, I didn't want to invest too much into 3ply at the time seeing as there wasn't a sale, I'm happy to buy some 3 ply ones and a sale would be very enticing ;)

  • +2

I received mine also (NSW). Good quality masks. Thanks OP.

Just received my 3-ply masks in Sydney, NSW.
They've just been washed in warm detergent and some antibacterial rinse.
