Poor man's RMs. I like it

    • +36

A poor man buys twice, as the saying goes. Hush Puppies make quality shoes. A prudent man's RMs.

      • +12

I could evem buy four times and come out ahead of one RM!

        • -3

          No you won't.
Last pair of Hush Puppies I bought were utter shit and barely lasted 5 months.
People can bitch and moan about the price of RM's but over the long term they crap on these.

          • -1

            @Maz78: Savage.

          • +17

@Maz78: Interesting. Im still wearing mine for work for 1.5 years now. If i change it in 6 months (not that i need to), and buy three more pairs after… that'll be 8 years of shoes and under the price of s single RM.

Ill get to change colours or designs too if i wanted. Not trashing RMs in anyway, but just stating the fact that these are a good deal at this pricepoint.

            • +12

@jecec: People gotta try and justify their big purchases, ya know.

            • +9

@jecec: Don't forget you need to change RM outer soles every 12-24M (depending on usage) which at the shopping mall will set you back about $80.

              • @doptimal: I have no idea how this happens to people… I have rotated 2 pairs of RMs for the past decade and only now coming up to my first re-sole, but my partner needed to re-sole after 24 months and she's a twigm

I'm 80kg so it's not like there's no weight on them, I'll jog to catch a train in them… I just avoid gravel. Looking for insight as I realise I'm the exception to this seemingly normal thing everyone needs to go through

          • +3

@Maz78: Look after your shoes then. I've had mine for years. They are quality. And SO MUCH more comfortable than RMs

          • +3

@Maz78: You might need camber adjustment.

          • @Maz78: RMW are terrible, just search for RMW quality and watch the page fill with quality issue complaints. RMW are just for accountants trying to pretend they're from the country… no one from the country actually wear these, they fall apart very quickly when used as the RMW herritage/ pipe dream would suggest their use should be. They sell the image of a lifestyle that none who wears RMWs actually has.

      • +2

I have these - Hush Puppies are no longer good quality.

The leather is bad, and the lining layers started de-laminating after a week. Still comfortable, though.

        • +3

I actually find their comfort soles TOO squishy now, and they deform quickly and de-stabilise. Comfortable AF for a few months, then actually significantly worse for me - I agree with the "no longer good quality" sentiment.

        • +1

agree to this, use to be better but the quality has went downhill these days.

        • +3

Still last me a couple year's as my daily work shoe, 110kg bigger fella.

First pair of RM's heel fell off in 6 months, wasnt impressed and went back to hush puppies.

          • +8

@Vert93: Medium fella you mean, 145kg Bigger fella here. I wear these and are very happy with them. Rose Anvil on youtube (cuts boots in half) absolutely bags the new crasftman RM's. i think these would be a better buy over them.

            • -4

@OhPee: Rose Anvil is sponsored by boot makers. He also compared two different RM products and complained they weren't the same. I know RMW no longer provides value for money, but compared against a cemented sole, laminated leather Hush Puppy they are an infinitely better product.

        • Hey mate, is that wooden piece in the heel real or fake?

Reason being - I always get the heel part replaced once it reaches the wood…

          • +1

@montorola: That looks very similar to my Florsheim's.

If that's the case, it will be solid wood and you will be able to re-heel them.
I've got two pairs on rotation and local shoe guy does very good job of rejuvenating.

Interestingly, he has said that the build quality of the new RM's has dropped since Twiggy took over.
They seem to be cutting corners with the construction.

      • -4

Shoes also make the outfit. You can be wearing the nicest suit, if you have cheap shoes the whole outfit looks cheap. Buy quality shoes and you can get away with a cheaper outfit while still looking good.

      • -1

Original Hush Puppies were quality. Evidently they sold the name to someone who just wants to milk it for all its worth, shipping cruddy product.

I bought a pair of HP based on a OzBargains deal a while back. They practically fell apart within a few months.

The heel is low quality particleboard. Even the mere hint of being exposed to any dampness is enough for it to swell, shed the rubber grip pad and basically disintegrate.

Only buy them expecting to get a single wear out of them.

        • +1

What evidence do you have that Hush Puppies sold their name to someone else?

    • +13

I wore RM's for years and spent a fortune on changing the soles. I have had Hush Puppy boots for years now and change to a new pair every couple of years. with no issues with soles.

      • Came here to say this. Found I was replacing the soles of my RMs every 18 months at 169 bucks a pop. Just not worth it.

      • +2

People really carry on about the quality of RM's and the fact that you "buy one pair for life, so its worth the price", but omit the fact that they also cost money to maintain…

If you're being frugal about it, Hush Puppies at this price are better value for the average buyer.

        • +4

You also get the bonus of adding extra waste to the landfill every 18 months. Win win for everyone.

          • @serpserpserp: Most of the shoe composition is biodegradable (pigskin/leather), so that's mostly a null point

            • +2

@WowBargain: Can guarantee you leave your hush puppies in the backyard they'll still be there in 10 years. You'd be surprised what shoe leather is treated with. Plus the rest of the shoe is not made of leather: resin, mesh, it isn't great.

People gotta have shoes, I get that, but lets not pretend that leather shoes are magically biodegradable, they are built to last material wise, but maybe not structurally.

I didn't even get to the postage, packaging. Although that is likely at least partly recyclable.

              • +2

@serpserpserp: Of course the shoes will be still sitting out the back in 10 years time, that's a bit of a silly example to draw.

Bury it in landfill for 100-150 years and they'll pretty much be fully biodegraded, with the exception of a small amount of undegradable materials used in the shoe.

I think your point is a little overblown there. Better to focus on shipping and production if you want to talk environmental impact.

All said and done, it's safe to say that this ranks very low on most consumers priority list when it comes to saving money on shoes.

            • @WowBargain: Mmmmm, pigskin

    • Hi are those as heavy as RMs (which I personal don't like)?

      • +4

No. They are lighter, more comfortable and don't need to be re-soled every 18months

        • +1

size wide, if I wear us11 for a sneakers, should I also choose us11 for this?

      • +1

The hush puppies are quite light, make me feel nimble

    • I've got 2 pairs of these and 1 pair of RMs. My RMs haven't been worn in 3 years now due to how much better the hush puppies are.

    • I bought a pair of RM Williams jeans a few years ago, $300. They only lasted eight months before the crotch wore out. $60 UNIQLO tailored jeans last around six months before this happens.

I don't think RM Williams can be used as a measure of high quality.

      • yeh its the sunk cost fallacy in full force

  • Is this a new style of hush puppies boots?
The heel look different from the popular models.

  • +1

What's difference between Wisconsin Chelsea and normal Chelsea (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B078S6WBQC)

    • The gusset design is different?

  • How is the sizing on these ones?

    • +6

      Runs large imo

    • Large. I had to return my usual size 12 and order 11.5

  • +2

perfect for my work meeting on friday everyone will be impressed

    • +5

      working from home call?

    • +10

I have the black version of these and whenever I shine them up I always get comments from people at work, because of how shiny they are.

The comments are colleagues taking the piss out of me but I'll go with it.

      • +1

"Your horses are going to love your shiny boots mate!"

  • +2

Thanks for posting. My favorite boots. Ordered a few spares.

  • -4

The quality of these shoes is abysmal and hardly worth this price.

    • -1

if they break, you return to amazon, easy peasy

    • +1

I will agree with Hushpuppies - I bought a pair of shoes, the soles came off after 3 weeks, RMA'd another pair, same thing. I just glued them together myself and then the rest of the shoe started falling apart.

I will say they were comfortable though.

  • +6

Hush puppies are always quality shoes , the guy commenting above obviously has never had a pair of Hush puppies

    • He probably works at RM and is a fanboy 😂

    • +1

Eh, I've bought a pair, the soles came off after 3 weeks, RMA'd another pair, same thing. I just glued them together myself and then the rest of the shoe started falling apart.

I will say they were comfortable though.

    • Great for comfort. Leather quality isn't great. You'll significantly wear them out if you wear them often for work.

    • I don’t really want to play this card. But… I’m a Podiatrist. I think I’d know a thing or two about these. It’s always interesting to see patients bring this in and think they’re a premium boot.

      • Bring what in? RM or the Hushies?

        • These, the hush puppies. I also bought a pair when they changed factories. $5 cheaper but huge corner cutting.

People bring in 10-20 year old RM’s quite often.

  • -1

    Steel toe?

    • +3

No, these are office boots not mine site boots.

  • +1

Ive found my hush puppies have a life of about 2 years, usually because i smash them running to catch the train to work, so 4x this v 1 RM.

    • RMs are like closer to 600 nowadays, with sales its still over 400…or maybe i haven't been paying attention?

    • +1

RMs will cost more in the long run. They aren’t that cheap to resole. You’re not supposed to wear the same shoes every day, so I’d just get two pairs of these and reconsider your options in four years

      • Out of curiosity, why arent you supposed to wear the same shoes everyday?

        • +2

Build up of moisture can lead to bacteria, fungi etc. best to let them air out every other day

          • @beltdrive: I plan to do this next time I buy shoes. Same shoe, different colour, alternating daily.

  • +1

Have been rocking these and the black ones for a few years now, highly recommend.

  • +1

I assume you can exchange / return if size is wrong?

    • +1

Yes. I did this a couple of months ago. Misread the chart and ordered a couple of sizes too small.

      • I think with Amazon, you can only return and re-order? So if the size you want to exchange is out of stock or return to original price, then you cannot I assume?

  • Thoughts on comfort to those that have worn them? My RMs are killing my feet lol

    • +2

A lot comfier for me. I bought a pair of RM's comfort craftsman and didn’t find them comfortable after breaking in.

RM's heel fell off off after 6 months and I sold the return pair and went back to hush puppies 🤷‍♂️

  • I bought these shoes last time they were on sale..highly recommend, very comfortable

  • HPs are quality shoes. Those who do not like square front can opt for Rivers, similar quality and price brackets plus goodyear welt https://www.rivers.com.au/product/rivers-xain-good-year-welt…

  • Hey Guys,

What are these kind of boots called?
    https://outlet.countryroad.com.au/regular-black-wash-jean-60…

  • +1

Got the dress shoes last year and they were most comfy to me compared to other brands.

    Thanks op got brown ones

  • +1

    Legend! Bought a pair.

  • +1

Thanks OP grabbed some black ones. I have a pair of the normal Chelsea boots and they are ok for the sale price. Not really sure how these are sized as still breaking them in so we'll see.

  • +1

Bought a brown and black pair. I think I will use these and return the colorado boots I bought since they apparently are itshay

  • $89 for a boot?

Is it the same price again for the other one to make up a pair of boots?

  • OOS

    • Plenty of sizes still available?

      • Every size of the $79 colour is showing "Temporarily Out of Stock" for me

        • +1

Available again. I think it was due to my address settings.

  • Do y'all get TOPY soles on these like you would a pair of RMs or is it unnecessary / not worth?

    • +1

Unnecessary, as these have rubber soles

  • Does Myers Price Match? $125 at Myers

    • Let us know after you have asked them! Cheers!

      • +1

David jones definitely dont. Just visited to try a size. They are selling $140.
Size is same as i wear 42Euro. So ordered a pair from Amazon :) tx op

        • +1

I did a price match at DJ for a kid's scooter before.

  • +1

I don't think I've had any shoe, expensive or cheap just "fall apart within a week/weeks" like so many people in here. Makes me wonder how they generally walk around in shoes? Or perhaps wear shoes that don't fit? I have a friend who has wide feet, he has problems buying any type of normal shoe, but even his don't "explode" after wearing them for a month or two

    • +1

Honestly I think most of those stories are just made up/exaggerated. The quality on these are great.

You might get slightly better results from a pair of RM's from serious rural abuse, but for most city slickers buying these (which is the large majority) they certainly won't be falling apart in a few weeks.
