So this or the Lenovo? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/554501

Edit: Oh different sizes but same similar price

    • How is $750 same/similar to $900?

Sub 1k? haha. Close enough for most working Aussies. Spend an hr on ozbargain and you'll easily be down more than that. :)

Lenovo has a AMD Ryzen 4500U which is better for gaming and overall better processor than the Intel one in this Dell model. Justifies the slightly higher price IMO

    • E14 is available for $869 if you have an edu email https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/549085.

Build quality is much higher than the latest Inspirons.

Oh, so we can trust the E series laptops now? When I was last looking for a laptop in 2016, this place didn't really like them.

        • Maybe compared to T Series. Latest E15 has better build quality than my Dell Latitude from work.

Expecting delivery times. Ordered this for my mother June 20, received yesterday. Takes approx 7- 10 days to get a reply to messages on eBay from Dell

    • I ordered from the last deal on 25 June and cancelled yesterday as I still didn't have an ETA

  • The cpu is supposed to have "baked-in support for Thunderbolt 3 and wireless AX". Does the laptop have either of those?

I don't even know what wireless AX is.

This model doesn’t have thunderbolt 3 support.

You can overclock your wifi with an unlocked multiplier. You can hit 6.8GHz with cryogenic cooling, heat pipes, overvoltage and RGB lighting.

      • Shame… :( my router can only hit 5ghz even with rgb turned on…

  • Thanks OP. Ordered 1.

Bought in the last deal - really disappointed with the screen (which coincidently isn't shown in any of the Dell marketing materials). As someone with both, I'd definitely recommend the ASUS Vivobook for a similar-ish price and specs (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551797). Worth the bit extra.

I was looking at this model a while back, but it has some serious shortcomings:
    - Ethernet is only 10/100, which is absolute joke in 2020. I can't even remember the last time I saw a laptop with only FastEthernet, and didn't think these ancient chips were even made any more.
    - No USB-C/Thunderbolt. Like someone has mentioned above, the CPU in this laptop has native TB3 support, so implementation of USB-C/TB3 doesn't require any extra chips and is far cheaper/simpler than with previous CPUs.
    - No backlit keyboard.

Those shortcomings might be OK for a laptop in the $500 range, but this thing retails for $1100 on Dell's website. You can get a Lenovo/Acer/Asus in a similar price range with far better specs. Something like the Lenovo E14 Gen2 for $888 is definitely worth spending a bit more for a far better laptop.

Manufacturing of 10/100 FE NIC should be banned :D

    • The E14 Gen2 with a Ryzen 4500u is significantly better for $100 odd more

Looking at getting my girlfriend a laptop as she is starting Uni soon and needs a work station. Would be mainly used for Office products, web surfing with a few tabs on the go, emails and some music/videos/social media etc, would this be suitable or is there another deal floating around currently which is better value? Would like to keep it under $1000, cheers

If you drop that sorta moolah on your gf, there had better be some serious returns to be had :)

This would be fine for most degrees, but students at uni generally go the surface pro / surface book or iPad pro route. Drawing on the screen comes in very handy. Best bet to to think what you going to use it for. Surface Pro are great for any science / Maths courses, paired with onenote

I would have preferred the Lenovo E14 Gen 2 but the shipping dates seems to be a real issue.

      • I ended up grabbing one of these under the student offer, not in too much of a rush at the moment for one and seemed like much better value

  • ports are ncie

  • Purchased on 29 July and received it today.

  • They also sent me a backpack.
