Probably worthwhile mentioning that this ships (not delivered) in 4 to 5 weeks. Great deal though.

  • Hi TA, is there any deals for Ideapad slim 5(AMD)? Thanks!

    • +1

Thinkpads are better built than Ideapads. But you might have other reasons for purchasing Ideapad.

      • Currently using E470 myself.
want to get a better looking laptop for my missus ;-).

    • How about the Amazon Lenovo Flex?

    • +2

i really want them to upgrade the ThinkBOOK line with new AMD tech :(

  • +1

Does the IR front camera upgrade allow for Windows Hello sign-in?

    • +4

Yep, I ordered this model from the Edu deal and can confirm Windows Hello works well.

  • +2

not sure about Lenovo laptop quality, but from having an XPS, it is definitely worth it to upgrade to 2-3 years of on-site warranty

    • Got one from a deal on here a few years ago, it's held up great. Very solid. E470.

Definitely better made than consumer laptops that try to be shiny etc. Not as well made as anything unibody.

      • yeah from reading comments, it looks like my next laptop brand would be a Lenovo, the only things that I haven't replaced with my XPS after one year is the CPU and GPU lmao

    • +4

I had the motherboard on my E490s die on me a week ago, about 5 months outside of the standard 12 month warranty.

After a quick online chat with their support they upgraded me to on site support and had someone fix it at my home within 3 days. I didn't even have to mention ACCC or ACL or send it off to a depot.

Obviously YMMV, but I was pretty impressed with the support.

    • I'm rocking a 4 year old Thinkpad (Personal one, not business). Its still going strong! I did get the 2 year warranty additionally when I brought it, but turned out to be a waste since I never used it. Its never even given a hint of trouble.

  • +4

    45% NTSC?

  • +24

i am here to see comments about the display.

    • +1

      Every single laptop deal!

  • +8

    don't say it, don't say it……………………… 250 NITS

    • +1

      Does it come with Thunderbolt?

    • -4

There's a market for people that enjoy not-very-bright displays.

      Poor bastards.

    • +4

I have had zero issues with a 250 nits panel, I don't understand what you guys are on about.

      • +2

Because it is simply not bright enough to be used outdoor. At this price if it comes with a 350+ nits screen that would be too awesome.

        • +16

How often do people use their laptops outdoors? Genuine question. I love being outside, and working, but the variable weather inevitably drives me inside after not very long.

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: Honestly, I think most of the people enjoy using their laptop in their bedroom rather than under the Sun.

      • -7

It's the same as people who are buying 8GB laptops. You're giving into budget offerings manufacturers are selling and thus, continuing to propagate shitty low quality specs that drive their sales.

Keep buying crap and they'll keep making the crap. I'd spend a bit more on a better display - considering your eyes are staring at the screen whenever the laptop is in use.

Sitting on the couch with a little bit of glare over the screen makes it unusable.

But hey, just my opinion. You're money your choice.

        • +2

Umm maybe we don't use Chrome?

          • @Void: Chrome runs perfectly fine on my i5/8GB Surface Pro(even 10+ tabs), this 'myth' needs to stop

            • @Freestyle: It was a joke. Of course Chrome runs perfectly on 8GB, I've run it on 4GB.

    • might as well be using a nokia 5110 screen.

  • What's the benefits gained with the intel ax200?

    • +6

      Wifi 6

      • +2

        Bluetooth 5

  • +8

I received my E14 yesterday and the screen seems decent enough for general use. I'm not a creative by any stretch so I'm not focused on colour accuracy, but the way people make it out here you'd think it was awful. 250 nits is fine for indoor use. I'm not saying it's amazing, but it's not as bad as some make it out to be, considering it's a $1000 laptop.

    • +3

How is the battery, can last 5 hours normal usage? Thank you

    • +1

Agreed, I received my E14 from the education deal a few weeks ago. Really enjoying the laptop. Screen is absolutely fine for general use and I agree about the comments about some users making it out to be a terrible screen.

      • +2

        how about battery life?

  • Tempted.

  • +1

Very good Deal. Thank you tightarse

  • The E14 or E15?

    Thoughts?

    • These are a bit bigger than your typical 14" or 14" Dell laptop. Personal experience with the E485 is that 14" is a sweet spot. The E15 has a number pad IIRC, the E14 doesn't?

  • +2

    Terrific deal!

  • Numberpad on a 14 inch laptop..

    Horrible.

    • +2

I might be wrong but the top image doesn't have a numberpad so they may have just reused the images from the 15 inch for the features section

      • +2

Must have, definitely no numberpad on the E14.

      • That makes more sense

  • +1

Yet again more terrible lenovo panels

  • -3

250 nits excellent. But you need to either get blackout blinds or only use your laptop at night when you can see the screen

    • +6

I read this a lot but it is, with all respect, nonsense. I have the E495 and it has been a solid workhorse during the pandemic. Daylight in the study.

At night I have to dim the screen or it will hurt the eyes.

  • +1

In every laptop deal, everybody is complaining about the nits and screen quality. Maybe you expect something impossible?

    • +6

Screens with 45% NTSC are trash. Pretty much all monitors and TV's have 72%. At 45% you're 1/3 of the way towards black and white…

      • Then why do most of the laptops have that 45% ntsc?

        • +8

Coz most sub 1k laptop is either good spec + poor screen or poor spec + good screen. Have to spend around 1.5k to get both good and that's why.

        • You really have to ask that question? Cost cutting for what is deemed to be more casual users. Last time I checked casual users aren't partially colour blind though.

          • @Viper8: it is a great question that contributed to the discussion.

    • +2

Received this laptop last Friday from the Education deal. The screen is absolutely fine for general use. I use it in well lit areas of the house.

    • +7

let's put it this way. if you are at home during the day, sitting next to a window, 300nit is average comfortable brightness level. 300nit might still be low for outdoor use, you need something closer to 400nit

with 250nit you are mostly OK at home sitting next to a window on a cloudy day. on a sunny day you will wish it was brighter. outdoors you will feel that you struggle to read things.

this is the very reason why lower tier laptops are supplied with these screens, to create tiers. you want a brighter screen? buy a more expensive laptop - that's what Lenovo wants us to do.

the truth is, for Lenovo to supply 300nit screens in E14 would cost them next to nothing (a couple of cents per unit maybe?) there's not much difference in panel prices.

which is why I usually buy a laptop where it's easy to replace a panel, and just put in my own panel. 1080p IPS 300nit full sRGB (72% NTSC) no flicker. this kind of panel costs around $100. take that, laptop makers.

Lenovo by the way doesn't want you to replace a panel yourself. first of all they make it quite hard, and they also have whitelists in BIOS, so you may end up with no ability to adjust brightness.

Dell never does this kind of bullshit. That's why I always buy Dell and use my own panels. Tons cheaper this way

      • Agree, especially those low pwm flicker screens are hell nasty.

      • Would you be able to suggest a laptop in this price point (RRP) with a user-replaceable screen?

        • what sort of cpu are you looking for?

  • Hi OP, Any code for E15 Gen 2?

  • Will it work on edu store for more discount?

  • I placed the order for E15 last night. A bit confused which one is more worthy of the price.

    • +1

can you send me a link for that?

  • +1

    Your user name is fun

    • +3

He is new here, please go easy on him.

    • +2

      That's cute. Username checks out.

    • +1

      You must be new here.

      • I’m just kidding about him

  • +1

Why so many ThinkPad deals in the last week or two .
Seem like a new deal every day or two.

  • Is this the new benchmark replacing the popular E495s and E595s? A nice upgrade, but I love my year old models still - and will for a few more years I'm thinking.

  • +1

any equivalent deal on a model that is lighter?

  • whats the difference between e and x series? similar build for x series is almost double the price.

  • I was looking at the Ideapad Slim 5 as it can be upgraded to Ryzen 7 but its about $300 more for about the same other specs. The Ideapad is also lighter by about 200gm.

Is it worth spending the extra money for Ryzen 7 or will Ryzen 5 be enough? I will be using it for basic gaming and some video editing for drone footage along with the usual stuff.

    • +1

The 5 will probably be enough for most purposes. If you have an edu email, you can still order an E14 with a Ryzen 7 through this deal but the rest of the laptop is a bit more expensive.

      • Thanks mate. That looks like an amazing deal too. I will look into that.

Edit: Looks like they have removed the ability to upgrade to Ryzen 7 in that .EDU deal.

        • +1

Might be a supply chain issue. Still waiting on my R7 delivery from 3 weeks ago!

  • Ordered the Thinkpad X13 last week. Have got an estimated delivery of 11th of August so oudsn about right 4-5 weeks.

  • How are AMD processors compared with Intel processors? are they comparable?

    • +10

The latest 4000 series processors have seemingly surpassed Intel - certainly as far as benchmarks go. Onboard graphics are significantly better than most equivalent Intels if you're interested in light gaming at all. For laptops with the option of either, it seems like battery life ends up being fairly similar, which is something where AMD has traditionally struggled in the past.

      • Very useful. Thanks so much!

    • +9

They're crushing Intel at the moment.

  • Just bought one
I was about to get a simple one for $699 at TGG. But next level here

  • Get us a deal for 4700tu and 15 inch pretty please!

  • Anyone knows if there's accidental damage cover?

    • I can't answer that definitively, but it's something I need with a curious toddler. Base warranty definitely excludes accidental, and 'best' cover doesn't say anything about accidental. I have to assume no but keen to hear if I'm wrong.

  • +3

Thanks TA! First time taking advantage of your work for us here on OZB.

    Cheers
