Does anyone have any experiences with the current/old Q7 model in terms of reliability and others? Thanks in advance.

What advantages does this motor car have over say, a train which I could also afford.

    • No we shant. yoink!

    • +1

Much cheaper than owning a train. I doubt they would let you run your own train on the public infrastructure so the cost of building your own train track alone would cost tens if not hundreds of millions. Add to that the cost of running and maintaining your own private train and you'd be looking at more money thatn a large fleet of Audis. So Audi Pro's - can use public infrastructure (roads), comparitively much less expensive, much lower running costs, less grafiti and less likely to encounter random losers in one of the seats when you jump in to drive home. Audi Cons - OzBargainers hate Audis, not a Camry, susceptible to people making VW/Dieselgate jokes about you. Privately owned Train Pros - Wayyy cool, can toot the horn whenever you like, can probably invite all your friends for train parties, can probably carry as much stuff as you like on trips. Private Train Cons - pretty limited on where you can go, Wayyyy more expensive than an Audi, would have to buy up land and build tracks to wherever you might need to go in the future.

  • nah, RAV4 is better :)

    Woah that's pretty cheap,

However I like the new kia stinger, or alfalfa romeo Julia.

Jaguar looking a bit affordable these days.

But for what you're paying for to buy that car, I'd hands down buy a Tesla sadan (you would not regret it, buy how does a mechanic once out of warranty repair a tesla) or Toyota land cruiser.

Got the 4L S line model during model change sale back in 2015. Fun car to drive especially for road trips.
Only issue was a failed starter motor after they change the ignition cable. On its 64k km now and its been fun.
You need to shop around or watch ozB when you need to replace tyres as my 295/35r21 tyres goes quite quickly! (Got only 30k out of Conti tyres but they really grip!)

          • @bnh: Haha yeah, sounds about right. Its not just Brembo spec, euros are all the same replacing a set of discs and pads about every 60k kms.

Mortgaged home with 25 years remaining, 120k household income and 20k in savings

      • You would need to earn a lot more than 120k household income to spend 85k on a car. If 1 person earns the 120k, it equals 85k after tax, two people is 100k.
I'm assuming these cars would be leased through a company, instead of paying with after-tax dollars.

        • +1

Leasing is not worthwhile. Novated lease works when buyers are so confused that they dont know what the breakdown costs are. Ultimately deceiving themselves that it is "pre-tax" money. FBT alone can almost make it not so worthwhile.

    • around 85k a year

    • -1

People who lack depth and seek validation from similar people who think driving fancy cars means you’ve “made it”.

    • I wouldn't know this question. The last car I bought was in 2005 and that was $25k second hand with less than 10k on the ODO.

    • +4

I totally agree with you that $80+ is very expensive for a car, and I am happy with a Forester or the likes.

Sometimes you just want to treat yourself a bit. My wife has never been a car person but got hooked after sitting in a GLE and X5 for a couple of long trips. The comforts and the extra luxury, I guess, are very addictive.

I really do not want to be seen like a brag, but consider you are serious with the question. We are in the early 30s and both have full-time jobs with a combined income well north of $200k. We also live in our own house(mortgaged) and have some other significant investments going. We are thinking about having a baby or two soon, so this definitely comes into the decision making. So far we are driving 2 hatchbacks, both of which are 10+ years old with 200k on the clocks.

I am never into spending big on cars, as they are undoubtedly depreciating assets. If any of the situations mentioned above are different, I would not consider the big purchase. I hope this would answer your question.

      • I still reckon it is abit too much to take on.

This whole COVID thing highlights vulnerability in what people can afford.

A family friend couldnt settle on a MB S class due for delivery in April.

Financial stats were cir $4mio net worth before COVID. Recently, just short of selling their owner occupied house (paid off).

Depends on personal circumstance and personal risk tolerance.

Things add up quickly with kids. Eg. School fee is 35k (post tax), house near good school network is cir $3m (80k interest alone), annual holiday $30k ($6k-$8k ticket pax), other misc item another $50k.

Problem with AU is that tax rate is 45% and makes everything that much more expensive. Additionally, no government subsidise are available (childcare, family tax benefit, parental leave and so on).

        • Luckily that the industries I worked in didn't get impacted by the COVID. So I think Im safe for now.

      • I am also in the market for a similar vehicle to upgrade our ~12 year old Golf GTI because it's becoming unfit for purpose with a couple of 4yr olds (roof racks can only help you so much). My SUV list (I also have a wagon list ;) ) has XC60, X3 and daylight at the top as the mid-size options, and XC90, Q7, CX9 as 7-seater options (hard requirement is to be able to put booster/child seats in 3rd row and that rules out a surprisingly large number of vehicles). That said I am primarily looking at 2-3 year old vehicles, not new. I also expect to keep whatever we do buy for a solid 5-7 years - unless the economics of electric vs petrol vehicles changes dramatically ($4/L fuel or something silly like that) - because EVs are going to absolutely slaughter the resale value of petrol vehicles in the not too distant future.

IMHO if what you're after is a comfortable (as opposed to… "dynamic") ride and nice interior (good seats, leather), gadgets, etc, then a top-line Jap or Korean SUV (eg: CX9) delivers just as well as the Euros (and will be $10,000s cheaper, or ~2 years newer at the same price).

In my view you buy a Euro SUV if you're after a nicer driving experience in terms of performance and handling. That's certainly the only reason why I'm considering them. Is that what your wife really wants ? :D

FWIW, our household income is at least 50% higher than yours and we live in Brisbane. I am struggling mightily with dropping ~$80k on a car. That said we - at least until The Sickness - regularly spend $20-30k/yr on travel, so… priorities. :)

        • +1

In my mind, SUVs are never for the "dynamic" anyway. I never really understand the likes of GLE 63, X5M, SQ7, etc. If I want speed and handling, I used to ride Suzuki GSXR750, which is one of the sacrifices after the marriage…

I totally agree that dropping $80k on a car is not the most rational ideas I ever had. But after a series of life events in the last year or two, I think I have changed a bit and want to 'live a little'.

What're your thoughts on XC90? I like them as well, but worried that it is even more unreliable than the Audi.

          • @Donkeyface: Yeah I know what you mean but sadly in most cases we need to have increasingly more "practical" vehicles as time goes by.

But within that constraint there are still options - that's why I drive a Golf GTI and not a Kia Rio. Fortunately I was also able to keep the bike. ;)

To be honest I don't get hugely hung up on "reliability", especially anecdotal stories. For example, people rag on VW reliability, but everyone I know with a VW has only good experiences to talk about. That being said I'd buy a 10-year old Jap car before a 10-year old Euro - but that's more to do with costs of repairs in this country than thinking one is seriously more likely to have issues than the other.

XC90 is second on my list, and to be honest that's mostly aesthetics - I prefer the look of the Q7 inside and out (though it does have some technical advantages - eg: towing capacity). Volvo also only has a 3yr max warranty whereas Audi will let you extend out to 7yrs (including on second-hand vehicles). They both feel pretty barge-y behind the wheel (especially compared to my Golf) but the Q7 is arguably somewhat more of a driver's machine.

The CX9 is a nice car as well (brand spanking new model due next year I think), and - lack of engine power aside - drives pretty nicely as well. The upcoming new Kia Sorento also looks pretty nice on paper.

Take the missus for a drive in some of the alternatives and see if they're good enough in terms of comfort, gizmos, etc. I daresay it's more about the logo on the back than the actual experience, though. ;)

      • +3

My wife and I are in a very similar situation, but with probably more investments. Honestly, don't listen to other people's "advice" about how to spend your money, because none of us know how stable your job is or what your financial situation is really like. For all we know, you have a ridiculously safe job and spend minimally.

Personally I was looking at a car around the 70-80k price range. However I am now just waiting for the new Sorento, which should be around 60k fully loaded.
The resale should be better with the Sorento, would be more reliable, and the maintenance would be cheaper, and you get a 7yr warranty. It would probably not handle as well and the interior probably wouldnt be as good but there will always be compromises. I can totally understand spending ~85k on an Audi.

I've got a bunch of friends in similar financial situations that drive 85k+ cars. They see no problem and don't struggle with payments. One of my friends justifies things because nice cars are his hobby. He doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. He lives a modest lifestyle in a modest house. He needs a car for his job, so he spends a little bit extra from his play money into his car.

        • The upcoming Sorento looks nice! But… With all honesty, my wife is probably after the badge. I used to think it is ridiculous. But now it starts to make sense, and there are demands for the premium European cars, not just fro the very rich.

I will see if she would consider the Sorento.

          • @Donkeyface: You can definitely see the demand for premium Euro cars expanding, especially since you can see that they all have increased their lower ranges.

My wife actually prefers me to buy Korean/Jap. I usually just advise to make the wife happy haha

I have a lot of experience with this particular refresh of the Q7 so I can share some insights:

I went through the options list and picked a few that I definitely wanted and a couple that would be nice to have, then went to find a close enough model in the country to negotiate the deal on (simply because I didn’t want to wait, they said the negotiations are the same whether you order or buy from inventory). I can dig up the options if anyone is interested, but it was mostly tech/comfort related.

About the car itself. Awesome drive, has a good amount of power for most things you’d need. Took it off-road a couple of times and it held up through mud and water alright. It’s got a lot of nice little things that you’ll appreciate and the entire car feels like the interior was designed just for it (as opposed to trying to make the car have generic parts to share with other models). Lane assist holds itself pretty well on well-marked roads and the traffic jam assist is great (needs driver assistance package). 360 parking camera is a must have, in my opinion, based on the length of the car. Seats are comfortable and rear seats can fit about 180cm adult for maybe 1 hour max haha.

Regarding maintenance, I had the car in Mackay and there was no Audi service centres nearby (closest 500km) and that was probably the biggest issue, so I’ll try to comment without including that specific issue. Otherwise, had an AdBlue malfunction which took about a week to sort out. Had one defect part I don’t remember (wasn’t essential) but this took about 4 months to order from Germany. Tyres are much more expensive than regular cars, but the car has TPM, so it’ll alert you if the pressure is low and that helps look after them.

Happy to answer any specific questions also.

    • This is not a refresh. This is the old model, hence the cheap price. The refresh just came out and it’s much better, it brings the car up to date.

    • Thanks. Sounds positive. May I know which year of your car is and how long you have had it?

What about fuel consumption in real life(160kw or 200kw)?

      • I think it was 2016 or 2017 and I’ve had it since then. Got it on a novated lease, so it’ll probably be upgraded when that runs out.

I think it might be the 160, but I’m not too sure now.
Doing a lot of highway driving: ~6L/100km
        Mixed: 6-8L/100km
Heavy traffic can go up to 10L/100km but I don’t have a lot of experience with traffic

The tank capacity is 75L, I think, and I tend to get at least 1000km out of it before the light comes on. I do live mostly rurally, so there’s a lot of highway driving.

  • This is a very good price but I'm waiting for the Q8 to come down a bit more. Changing from a X5 f15.

People buying this aren’t rich, they’re people who want other people to think they’re rich.

        • Rich people don’t buy cars, they lease them against a business and don’t care about running costs and depreciation.

If it was my business I wouldn't be shifting such a dog (cost, running cost and depreciation) onto my business. If it was someone else's business I want to send into bankruptcy then I'll think about it.

              Spend $80k on a car.

Tax rate say 25%. You pay $20k less tax. But don't forget you need to have profits of $80k.

Theory if you didn't buy a car you'll have $60k to do as you please. Cash doesn't depreciate at least not as fast as the Audi.

            • @dreamscene: Can confirm this is 100% how tax works.

It is funny that you confuse the financial structure of paying for an asset with the decision of getting the very asset.

I am hoping you understand that this car can be purchased with many different financial structures, including a leasing agreement.

          • @ocoolio: You can be creative as you can with structure.

The underlying asset is depreciating and depreciating fast. If it didn't have a residual value it is probably almost a liability.

I have MY17 model, stupid entertainment system, the gps and no touch screen make it nearly impossible to navigate. Carplay and android auto are nice, break system is good sometime it forced me to stop before i want to. 360 sensor to parking is a must, this car is too long and hard to park. Really comfortable but maintenance is quite high. I dont know but audi should have contactless carplay (not avai to my car even i choose max option)

    • Just curious, what are the maintanence expenses that you encountered? Are these a result of things going wrong or are the regular services just expensive?

      • Just regular service, roughly around 1k each 10k. I did it at audi services hence it may be expensive. Just change the oil and change the wheel order. Sometimes i turned off the car but the engine still working, i dont know what happened and ask the authorised services, they said it’s aright lmao. The kick to open trunk is useless as well. Overall it’s a nice car but if i chose again, rather go with lexus

        • Lexus could be an option. The Rx is a fair bit smaller with 5 seats only, and the Lx is way too expensive(and I really don't like it).

          • @Donkeyface: yeah, toy seems cheaper to maintain, another option is volvo, xc90 is good and smart but not really sure about maintenance :(. I paid 95k totally 3 years ago and audi depreciate so much :(

first of all - stay away from the 160KW. Do not buy, its not a good way to spend money. its the lowest version of Q7 and its not only about the engine power.

If you will buy it, you MUST get the 200KW version.

Honestly, to people who only think they have any idea about this car without having one / testing one, please be quiet as you can not possibly imagine the quality and the premium drive experience that this car has to offer.

im in a market for a new suv, and just in the past 2 months ive tested many of them, kia seltos, toyota rav4, toyota kluger, haval h9.
They do not come even close to audi Q7, when i actually got into Q7, i got the "THIS IS IT" feeling. After driving it for only couple of hours i would never even think again about all the other cars. Yes, its that amazing.

It is expensive, but its well worth the money, at least for people that have an idea about cars, handling, driving etc, its not just about getting from A to B.

Ive been watching Q7 prices go up and down since couple of months, i can tell you now its not a good time to buy. Price references:

    1 month ago - Q7 2020, 3k km, 200KW, sold for 74k in Melbourne.
    2 weeks ago - Q7 2017, 45k km, 200KW, S-line, brand new 21 inch alloys, 55k in Brisbane.

    • Wow! thanks a lot. I really didnt care the 160 vs 200kw before, but now you convinced me.

74k for a 200kw 2020 model? really? I am sold! But more interested in the 55k one, as 2020 model is not that important to me.

When do you think would be a good time to buy? Or I just need to sharpen my game of bargaining with the dealer(s)?

      • You must have the 12inch active speedo, its so amazing and beautiful, and 160kw they dont have it.

Yeah i was going to fly from Bris and pick it up myself and drive back, but with covid restrictions i didnt want to risk it.

like with any product, market goes up and down and its directly affected by supply.

Right now maybe because its EOFY a lot of them disapeared from the market, im watching closely as i plan on buying one.

cheapest 160kw ive seen so far was black 2016 for 43500 + duty and rego. i didnt want to buy but someone got it the next day.

      • U should go with 2020, infotainment system in 2017 sucks, dont even think to use it, the voice control is no where near to understand normal oz accent, algorithm to navigate is dumb as well, i one navigate from brisbane cbd to KEvin grove, it directs me go to south bank and make the U turn. u should rather go with 2020, wireless carplay is awesome

The number of envious losers commenting on this post is astounding. Judge the post on its merits compared to the best price for this or a comparable model. Don't judge how someone chooses to spend their hard earned coin or assume they are taking on debt, etc because you either don't have the coin or choose to spend it differently.

In 1991 my father inherited 100k. He could have gone out and got himself a 100k car like this. Instead he invested in Commonwealth Bank shares. Eventually those shares increased 30 fold in value and ended up being worth 3 million. Lesson - there are many things you can do with 100k. Decide if spending it on a car is the right one.

      • i got 50k and invested in CBA shares in january, sold in march with 60% loss.

id rather buy a Q7 and lose money and at least i would enjoy myself than invest in shares and just lose money.

I think I read somewhere that the average multi-millionaire in the USA only drives a $50,000 USD car (or A$70,000). So if you buy this car, and aren't a multi-millionaire, then you're living beyond your means.

          • +4
