Does anyone have any experiences with the current/old Q7 model in terms of reliability and others? Thanks in advance.

Grabbed 3 on my way to train station, thx OP!

    • +9

For those that didn't get the joke, Doncaster has no train line.

Thus there's a steady stream of buses from Box Hill station up Tram Rd, which also has no trams.

Does anyone have any experiences with the current/old Q7 model in terms of reliability and others?

They are really good quality, you will appreciate the finer touches. Unfortunately, mechanics are not too knowledgable about them (compared to more popular Japanese models).

Having said that, within 5 years you certainly won't have any issues with it at all; even within 10 years you are still in good hands - unless you drive it like a monster and floor it with a cold engine all the time, or put an insane amount of kms in int (but with any car, above 150k you are relying on your luck).

Great find op, go for it, it's a fantastic car!

    • +11

Mate's MY18 SQ7 got a busted radiator within first 12 months. Replacement went again within 6 months of replacement. Traded in for a Japanese car.

Family's first MY10 Q7 S line still going strong to-date. After various parts being replaced from gearbox to some gasket. Rust started a back in 2017.

Another mate's Q5 MY17 had engine oil leak 6 months in.

My own A1 MY11 had gear box replaced 12 months in and rough idle at app 18months.

So, all these are direct experience. And I have driven them. Won't argue it is nice to drive. In fact, I loved the drive from Syd to Melb in the Q7. It was like a limo 10 years back. But would I buy it again? Unlikely, unless I have spare money to sit two of them at home.

Another friends A4 Quattro had a engine replacement 12months in.

Only one that had no issue was my cousin's MY16 S3… but rarely driven coz he rides a motorbike most days.

Without questioning your experiences, those do not align with the German auto club's (ADAC) breakdown statistics: Audis routinely top all classes, in terms of quality (not breaking down on the road).

        • Yes, alot of different reports globally.

We have been in a few european cars in euro. They are not portrayed as "luxury" cars and usually has very basic equipment and spec (eg non turbo charged and even manual aircond console!), thus less things to go wrong.

AU is also a much hotter country with less motorway (they do 200km/h+ over there). Wear and tear is the worst at start/stop traffic in city driving - where most euro metals live. There's a reason why landcruiser/hilux sell like hot cakes in the middle east as well centre part of oz.

        • +1

Europe and Australia are very different places. In Europe these things are everywhere and parts and costs to keep them on the road are cheap, they also don’t experience the extreme conditions as in Australia.

          • +1

            @Roger Ramjet:

they also don’t experience the extreme conditions as in Australia.

You mean the -20C during winter and the +40C in the summer? You are right, they have a way more extreme range of weather conditions than we have in Australia. That's why cars here can run for kms that would be totally unheard of in Europe.

Sorry mate, you are totally oblivious about the weather conditions in Europe and how bad a cold-start is for any mechanics.

      • My experience is contrary to above. A4 has been running strong for 10yrs now. It has done a good number of km, only replacement (besides the usual like breaks/break pads/tyres) it had was the timing belt. We can't complain about Q5 either, no issues at all. Neighbour has also been super pleased with his Audi over the last few years. I guess there will always be two sides of experiences and opinions.

    • +2

Yeah don’t listen to this guy. Euros are junk.

      • +1

Would probably have a reliable spare car on the side and money is not an issue. (Figured alot of euro car buyers are on finance and living pay cheque to pay cheque).

Whilst reliability is a concern, I have to admit, euros are nice to drive for most people. Given the slightly harder suspension and more torquey engine. I remember driving the Q7 from syd to mel back in 11, was a pleasure.

Most people get tricked into the dynmic of the car due to slightly sporty tune - slow car go fast serves the purpose for 90% of the population that dont know about cars.

Not many enthusiast would be happy with rebadged euro metal. A few exceptions where they engined the car from ground up as fast cars (instead of merely turbo charging everything and increase spring/damper rate). Eg lotus, boxster/911, mx5, GTR and the like.

    • +3

You don't need luck to get to 300k with any of the Japanese cars

    • Toyotas are barely run in at 150k kms

  • +10

price is for the base model with no extras, take note how quick these will fall in value already demos selling for low/mid 80's, if you really wanted one probably better off negotiating on one of the higher spec models not like their selling heaps nowadays, also looks like 2020 models have had an update

    • I did look on carsales, and a lot of people are dreaming there. The options will definitely put the price up a big-time, but you could still negotiate on it. I think they would prefer to get rid of the old models, and the COVID does make selling new cars pretty tough at the moment.

I don't really like the new model that much, because the price of well north of 100K(and prefer the physical buttons, not the dual-screen)

      • +4

options are just a bs sales tactic to push the price higher you just negotiate it in with the deal they see what stock they have available with options, would go few dealers negotiate on the q50 add bunch of options you want, set yourself a price you want to pay & be willing to walk away when they reject it, then wait for the call, you're buying in the high end market end of fy should help negotiations, things wouldn't be going to well for them atm & they would want to move stock, 138 2019 models available used/demo/new

        • +2

Month end is the best time.

Walk in and tell them the card is ready for a deposit.

2 occasions the sales came chasing after us after refusing on the deal in office and we went back into our car.

It's a game of poker. Except buyer will always be the looser.

    • -2

They fall in value cos people who know don’t buy these things without warranty. They’re built to fail.

      • +2

        Sounds like poor man speak.

    • +3

      Audi Q7
      160KW
      $85k

Not only being base model but how is this low power output on a huge luxury vehicle acceptable to people? It's mind boggling.

      • My 16 year old Japanese V6 has almost the same total power and a tad bit better power to weight ratio than this car.
Downside is fuel economy at around 10-11L/100KM averaged out.
Upside is I have done nothing but basic service to him (less than $300 per year) and it's still going strong after this many years and 220kkm…

      • +3

The 500Nm at 1250rpm makes up for it to some extent, as it's a diesel

        • +1

ah right, forgot this was a diesel, and yes you are absolutely right that much torque at a reasonable RPM does make up for it. Though I'd personally never get a diesel car due to the emission issues and how dirty of a combustion mechanism it has compared to petrol, let alone a turbo diesel.
Petrol or Petrol Hybrid all the way.

      • I dont own one, but have had the base model on rental for a few days. It doesnt feel underpowered at all.

      • -1

Cos it’s an Audi and they only care about image.

      • It's the torque that counts in these heavy vehicles.

care to elaborate? more specifically, what breed of a donkey you are referring to and where did you buy them?

    • +1

Yeah not this one though. It's a good 'un.

    • But why? 1.9TDI was bulletproof

      • Emissions scandal

  • +1

Must be an April fools post. These things been D/A brand new current year compliant for $85k before COVID.

    • +2

      $84,990

      $10 off!

      • No joke. Those pay RRP prob prints money in their garage.

More expensive the car, higher the "discount". 10% on new released models 15-25% at later stage of life cycle. Top end of the range is where 25% is at.

Gives buyer a good boost of ego:
        - driving an "expensive car"
        - able to get a "good deal" with big discounts

    • -3

agree, you can get them 20% off rrp anyway
if you know how to bargain

  • Bargain, I'll take 2… :)

  • +1

Drove one for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Smooth powerful engine, relaxing drive, refined.

It may lack a bit of character appeal compared to say an X7.

And the third row would not be usable if anyone is over 150cm ime.

    • A week sure, the warranty period sure, any longer and it’ll send you broke.

      • Well in the OPs case, its 5 year servicing and warranty, so as long as you get rid of the car at the 5 year mark - there will be little ownership worries.

That said, I didn't comment on ownership or reliability other than my week's enjoyment of the car ;)

I wouldn't buy european now, had two in the past, own a japanese car right now but doubt I would buy any car moving forward as a personal choice.

        • +1

And lose $80k if not more in depreciation over that 5 years plus all the costs of keeping it in the road.

    • Q7 is more close to the X5 pricewise and featurewise, so the one to compare against is the X5, not the significantly more expensive X7.

  • -3

    Thanks bought 1000

  • Diesel? Ugh.

    • -3

I know what you mean. Diesel used to be great as the fuel was so cheap. Now diesel is more expensive than unleaded. Damn greenies!

    • I've got a BMW 330D, 11 years old, still runs like a new. The extra cost of diesel is offset by better economy - I'm averaging 7.4l/100 in a car that gets to 100 in 6 seconds. Other than minimal servicing costs (I do oil changes etc. myself) the only thing needing replacing was a $60 sensor and some rear shocks.

I've had 4 diesel cars over the years, and I find them to be extremely reliable. I sold a Pajero a few years ago with almost 400K, that'd only had 1 new water pump and alternator in its life, the rest of the engine and gearbox was factory. You'd be hard pressed to get that from any other 4cyl petrol engine.

  • +2

I drove this car everyday, well built.

Actually a decent deal and prefer this one to the updated as the climate controls will be going to a screen.

wish they made a hybrid version, Cayenne E-Hybrid just a little out of my price range at 180k with a few options

forget about pollution. Diesels are so clean now thanks to VW magic technology.

    • It's sent outside the environment

No much help on the Q7, but until stolen the A6 Quattro we had for 5 years seemed well put together and superbly attached to the road… extremely hard to get out of shape round a corner…. 30k we paid for a 4 year old with another 2 years factory warranty sure beats being original owner taking a 70k depreciation drop in 4 years though I’d expect an SUV to suffer less in this regard than a sedan…My wife wanted an SUV but got over it and enjoyed the A6. The wagon version would be the go if you can find one eg
    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2015-Audi-A6-allroa…

    • Good point! I like wagons and owned a Volvo V60 in the past. But the wife says no…

  • +2

I absolutely detest Audi's new model variant naming convention. Why not just stick to the usual 2.0TDI, 3.0TDI etc? So stupid.

    • The sad thing is customers expect inflation in model numbers. Engine sizes are shrinking as engines become more efficient and output more kW per litre. The 2.0TDI may become a 1.8TDI with time. That feels like a downgrade even though it's not, so it turns some customers off. It's also the reason why each successive car model is almost always larger than the last. Gives more "value".

  • +1
