LG V50 ThinQ 128GB (Telstra Variant) - $599 + Delivery (Free C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

4160

Found this in the catalog at https://catalogue.jbhifi.com.au/2020/04/16-apr-digi/index.ht…. Similar to the G8S deal from last week, but better screen, bigger battery and the DAC the V-series is famous for. Very good deal on a very good phone. Pretty sure its an all-time low price, maybe clearing stock for the V60 which has just been released.

Mod Note: Refer to the catalogue for pricing, as the site hasn't been updated yet. Site has been updated.

        $9.99

        • oh ok thanks mate

    • That's fast. Did not know same day delivery is possible. Which city?

      • +1

Yeah it had an option where if you ordered before 2pm you will get it same day delivery. I am in Sydney.

  • Thanks OP! bought one! :)

  • Delivery options not available.

    Missed out this time.

  • Hi guys, noob 5g question. Does this work with Optus 5g and would i need to pay anything extra to Optus to use 5g?

    • You may need a new SIM depending on how old yours is. They are free in store. But are stores even open LOL? Maybe try an online chat with support. The phone will be fine.

      • Online chat is not available now.

    • Should work with 5G (same bands). Not sure about price.

    • would i need to pay anything extra to Optus to use 5g?

      No

  • +1

The dual screen is interesting. Three finger horizontal swipe gesture moves the active app between screens.

  • All sold out in Perth it seems.

    • Glad i was able to pick up 2 in Perth. I was going to wait till tomorrow, but figured i'd pull the trigger this arvo instead. Very happy i did now.

No delivery options available and closest pick up is displayed as Hobart for me lol.

      • why need 2? you like 4 screens?

        • Myself and my partner needed a new phone.

      • Where did you get the two from ?

        • +1

          The Malaga store in Perth.

          • @Frayin: So it was you who cleared out the Malaga store ;-) ! While I was doing a little due diligence, it sold out there and had to go to Ozzy Park.

  • Just a update for me.

confirmed it wasn't dual sim (store said they think it is bu bring it back if its not.

ended up doing the $65 deal for 12 months and was told to come back after my first bill to get it bumped down to 45 (apparently they do it often and even name-dropped ozbargain ).

ended up paying 199 for the phone (ill get more than this for my old phone) so was worth the value (my optus contract ended recently)

    • $739 all up is a pretty damn good price (12 months of $45) for phone + plan IMO.

Kind of wish i did this myself, but the missus wouldn't have wanted to switch to telstra anyway.

      • 759 (you gotta pay for a month on 65) and agreed was disappointed that it wasnt dual sim but for such a cheap price with a large data pool (30gb once i switch) i wont complain

    • Please explain this $45 a month after first bill?
And $199 for the phone? I'm confused am I missing something?
      Thanks

      • You get a $400 credit if you sign up with Telstra for 12 months @$65 pm via JB. So it makes the phone cost $199. Some people are able to negotiate with Telstra the pm cost down from $65.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/511348

        • Thanks. Understood about the $199.

So you do one month @ $65 , then downgrade to the $45 pm plan which is less data 45gb per month ?

Or are you saying there is a way to keep the $65 plan data which is 60gb but pay $45 pm for it ?

        • Wouldn't the Boost $135 for 12 months be better then $65 every month?
If you don't use a lot of data?
Since we are home, we mostly use wifi.

      • +1

You don't do it with Telstra online chat. You do it with JB hifi. Go back to JB hifi and re sign up on the $45 per month plan. They let you JB change plans without paying ETC.

  • I bought one and I picked it up today at Bondi, Thanks

Picked one and here are my initial impressions-
    - Feels very premium quality build (felt really nice holding it compared to my other phone A50 - it's exactly same size as A50. How I wish this was smaller as I am finding A50 bit big)
    - Beautiful display - I was totally blown over
    - No TPU case, no screen protector in box. There is a earphone which does not seem to be premium (I did not test it)
    - Snappy thanks to SD855. This is my first LG phone so will take some time to adjust to UI.
    - Fingerprint is very fast. I like sensor on back (v/s in display sensors) so this works out well. There are no camera bumps which means it takes a bit to find out where the sensor is in the back! I will eventually get used to it.
    - No facial recognition
    - Single SIM :( Why oh why LG .. Could have easily done a hybrid sim (shared with Micro SD card slot).
    - I put my Telstra SIM and though some parts of my suburb are showing 5G on Telstra website (so was hoping to get it) - I did not get 5G speed at home
    - Remove the 2 Telstra apps (My Telstra and Testra Air)
    - While the app updates were going on, the back started to warm up (I wasn't connected to charger). This was surprising as SD855 is supposed to run cool
    - Settings have quite a lot of customizations so this will take some time to play and explore.
    - Mine was showing July 2019 security release and there was an update so I am guessing that's Nov 2019 update
    - Eagerly waiting for Android O / 10 as couple of review videos I saw have said phone has become faster after upgrading to Android 10
    - Lastly I tried the second screen (the reason I bought the phone - to experiment). It was easy setup and while second screen is spec wise not same as primary screen, it's still gorgeous. It's not aligned due to the way it's attached but it's not a big deal as well. It was convenient watching youtube on one screen while surfing news site (I know I know we should stay away from news these days) on second screen was quite useful. I use whatsapp a lot for work and personal (audio, video and text) so this will help when I need to check anything during whatsapp call. Will install MS office also so hopefully can be more productive on the go.
    - Did not try second screen as game controller. Fortnite downloader was there so i am guessing it supports second screen as controller. I need to download and test it
    - I did not test camera or audio
    - I wish the front of second screen had a small window for time, notifications etc as when we close it, we can't see any notifications, time or even if we get a call we will need to flip the second screen all the way to the back. Yes definitely LG did not think this thru.
    - When both screens were ON, I did not even realize when the battery dropped from 30% to 0%!! I didn't see any warnings too so i will have to retest this scenario to see what's happening.

I am quite pleased so far with the value at $599. Probably not worth the full price as the second screen is not exactly seemless/useful like Galaxy Fold / Huawei Mate.

Mine had facial recognition out of the box.
      * Settings > General > Lock screen & security > Biometrics > Face Recognition

I haven't updated to the latest software version though so I don't know if this would be in the same place in your settings.

      • Oh Ok Thanks. I will check it out.

      • Found the setting. Thanks.

    • +1

      Does have face unlock:
      https://www.hardreset.info/devices/lg/lg-v50-thinq/faq/faq/f…

SD855 isn't perfect. It does have heat issue especially when you do 4K@60fps recording. That's why there is a limit of 10 minutes.

Already quite a lot of reviews on this phone. Anyway, people here seem interested on the camera side of things (we know in auto mode, Pixel 4 XL is better, but can GCam app help?). The screen protector is going to be interesting as well. Despite the display is flat, the phone does have a curve edges. Hard to find good screen protector for V30, V40, V50, G6 to G8. Plastic one will need to be near perfect cut, otherwise it won't cover the entire display and no chance for it to cover the curve part. Glass one has a similar issue though you could go for full body one, however, most of those would impact touch sensitivity. Hydrogel could fit well, but it offer very little protection and prone to fingerprint marks. All that is before adding the dual screen case into the mix.

    • +1

I also bought one today, i agree with Most points made.

Finger print is kinda slow, unlocking your phone is much slower than my past phones like Oneplus 6.

There is a weird bug in the UI, when i swipe left then twice right then back to the main home screen it does this thing where everything moves slightly after the animation has finished.

I wont be using the second screen as it drains battery far too fast

Every phone ive even used has ran warn during the initial setup where you are downloading all your apps and updating apps and the phone.

Camera is OK obviously not as good as my old phone which broke P30 pro

The battery life seems to be ok but ive yet to test that properly.

For $599 it's a good price and will do me for a few months to a year depending on what new phones come out/deals.

    • (I know I know we should stay away from news these days)

wtf is this call for ignorance?

      • too depressing, especially world news.

    • Mine has a hybrid Sim.

      • It looks like hybrid SIM, but when you actually put 2nd SIM in it, the phone won't recognise it

    • -3

ok thanks. based on your review i decided this is so so deal at $599. at $399 i will get one for fun.

      • Please ignore then. Good luck.

    • +1

One thing to bear in mind - you may have heard of the wonderful "DAC". If you are using consumer level earphones, this won't kick in automatically, you'll need to drop down the menu and turn it on. I was heartbroken when I moved everything over from the v30 and weet from a wide sound-stage with every instument and voice placed and full to what sounded like small portable radio, - then I remembered to turn it on. It's not quite as sublime as the V30, but still good using the original V20 B&Os and DTS:X adds new dimensions. As a stand-alone without earphones it's not too bad.

I agree that the second screen was wasted a little and may even have been better with a plastic rather than a pointlees glass surface, but you do have a return of the " Quick Tools" and media controls on the always on display.

I'll keep the second screen on as a pretty good case. I'm used to a wallet case anyway so I don't find it a distraction.

  • I haven't used LG since G4. But I see lots of people praising this phone for headphone jack, audio quality, screen quality.

  • +1

I took too long to decide…just tried to order for delivery, no longer available. :(

A few places still available for click and collect though…

    Oh well.

    • Too bad you're not in Melbourne, I bought yesterday, on its way but I'm thinking of returning because of the lack of dual sim. Would have been happy to have sold it to you at what I got it for. Still on the fence though :/

      • I'm in Melbourne and I'll buy it from you if you decide you don't want it.

        • wow already seeing 2nd market hahaha will see more in 2 months time

        • +1

How so? The reason I'm in the fence is as I am wfh now and would like dual sim for work and personal. Everything else about the phone really genuinely excites me to the point I might as well keep it. I am a serial multitasker and pretty sure I can actually use the phone with Citrix to work from home. I have nothing against LG and find that other phone brands are pretty much doing the same thing now. I am coming from an s10e which I like but wife has a need for a new phone as her iPhone broke down.

        • +1

Sure, when it comes, I will let you know what I decide. I won't open it, everyone loves an unboxing and there's two boxes to open this time :)

          • @tarulov3: Never mind, I was able to buy one direct from JB now :)

        • Hey mate, apparently there is more stock for delivery, so go for it

edit: beaten by 2 mins, hehe enjoy

          • +1

@tarulov3: Ha ha I've been refreshing the page all morning. I was in desperate need of a phone.

    • I have one that i will be returning soon due to it not being dual sim. I'm in Sydney if anyone is interested and can't get one.

      • Did you end up selling this or take it back to JB hifi?
        interested

        • sorry mate managed to return it

          • @ajh: funny, I rang Parramatta today as they showed stock available.
They said only had one and it was waiting on contract approval for sim package.

No mention of an opened return….I would have bought that if they said returned unused

            • @Bob1212: try castle hill

              • @ajh: yeah. they had one show as available at 4pm today.. i called. they said they had a faulty unit return. bugger.
                cheers anyway

                • +1

@Bob1212: Tried this morning and they found the phone, because it is opened they cannot sell it. It has to be returned to the manufacturer

Wonder how many others have returned an opened one that now cannot be sold at all just because it doesn't support dual SIM but otherwise functions perfectly? That is a lot of phones going to waste out of the 66 phones they had available nationally for this promotion.

  • +2

I cancelled my order last night with no issues. I wanted a dual sim so it was a deal breaker for me.

    • Are most people using dual sim for easy overseas calling or contacting a mistress, I have dual sim but don't see much benefit over normal/single.

      • +6

yes. for me, dual sim phone is one for mistress A, one for mistress B.
        and separate phone for mrs

      • +5

2 simple use cases (there are more)-
        (1) Work SIM and personal SIM in single phone v/s need to carry 2 separate phones
        (2) Primary number on old cheaper plans which may have less data + a throwaway SIM (Kogan, Catch etc) for more data

      • +1

One SIM work supplied, the other my private number.

      • +1

I have my main SIM and a second SIM with belong for making unlimited international calls.

This second SIM port is when I travel overseas before also.

And if work decides to provide a SIM. It can go there also.

      • +1

For me, the second SIM is added from ozbargain deals e.g belong 1/2 price amaysim 6x28 days with unlimited calls etc. I have limited data for my primary number as I'm on a prepaid long life plan, so I'll add a cheap SIM card if/when there is a good deal, then use data on that.

The added bonus to freely give the second number out to real estate agents when inspecting properties, other unsavory characters and for anything else where they may need to contact me for verification etc. I also can generally ignore all calls on the second sim without any ill feelings.

If anyone in Canberra managed to pick one or two up that they don't want I'm happy to pay, plus a little extra. Did the silly thing and showed the missus last night and got her (and my) hopes up, then realised I couldn't find any 🤚😣

    • +3

Check the website again right now, there seems to be more stock

Just picked 1 up online, was just looking to get the V40 so great timing and price :)

          Thanks pete

        • I'm a bit confused by this screen protector. In the demo video that shows installation of the screen protector they appear to use a UV light (to help the glue stick to the screen I suppose?). Does the protector come with the light? Is it necessary to use the light, and if so are there any alternatives?

          • +2

@teslacoil33: These are UV-Glue screen protectors, the glue hardens when the UV light is used after installation. You will need to use the UV light. It can get messy and getting bubbles out can be tricky. I have installed a few… if you are to do it, make sure you cover any opening such as speakers/microphones and wipe the sides for overflow of glue before you use the light.

            • @JaeTee: Thanks for the advice. Given that it's glue that's used as adhesive does that make replacing the protector difficult?

              • @teslacoil33: Fortunately i have not had to remove any of the ones i have installed, but from you tube videos it does not seem too hard using a thin flexible plastic card of sort. Also when i was researching in the past, there are cheap vs good quality glue used from different kits which makes a difference… hope this helps

              • +1

@teslacoil33: I have removed maybe 6-8 of these when they break etc. In my experience, you separate the old protector with a guitar pick or similar plastic separation tool, the glue seems to stay with the protector, and sometimes there is some remaining around the edges of where the old one was. Using isopropyl alcohol (or methylated spirits) to clean it is very easy, if there is residue.
The important thing about the glue protectors is
                1. not to get it on your skin (its hard to get off/possibly not good for you)
                2. protect eyes and skin from UV
                3. mask over any holes (speakers, microphone, earpiece, charging port, SIM tray, buttons)

  • +2

I just returned one of two I purchased. Set it up for my mother and didn't like it as much as I hoped.

Feels a little sluggish imo. Can't get used to the LG skin either and their differences with things like the home screen.

    • +2

      just install nova.
the downside is when you upgrade to $1500 phone and put nova back, you feel you are still using your old $300 phone nothing different hahaha

      • That's a good point. I'll do that with my mums. I used it on my Note 8 previously after Google Launcher was removed but now the latest One UI seems a good option.

I was surprised how different it actually felt.

I've mucked around with Nokia and Huawei in the past (along with owning Samsung for ages) and I found the LG skin the worst.

  • Does anyone have a screenshot of this being dual sim before they changed it? I purchased one and would like to return it due to this but i don't think ill be able to prove it.

    • Read it wrongly. NM.

  • Just picked up mine and it was still made in Korea.

    • Yes I was also pleasantly surprised that both the phone and second screen came from Korea.

      • How do you know Made in Korea?

        • Sticker right on boxes.

  • +2

ChiMot really hates this phone. Every second comment is bashing this phone. Curious.

    • +1

not really see i help someone with nova comment

      • How did you reply within seconds of me commenting on this 😂

        • +2

my name Barry Allen i am The Flash, the fastest man alive

      • Make that 2. I had used Nova years back and was not impressed. Hopefully they have come along now and I may like it this time. Will install on second screen (ofcourse I don't know if we can do that - have 2 different UIs for the 2 screens)
