LG V50 ThinQ 128GB (Telstra Variant) - $599 + Delivery (Free C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

4160

Found this in the catalog at https://catalogue.jbhifi.com.au/2020/04/16-apr-digi/index.ht…. Similar to the G8S deal from last week, but better screen, bigger battery and the DAC the V-series is famous for. Very good deal on a very good phone. Pretty sure its an all-time low price, maybe clearing stock for the V60 which has just been released.

Mod Note: Refer to the catalogue for pricing, as the site hasn't been updated yet. Site has been updated.

So I've got a S20 Ultra and just bought this…. Why!?!?!

Maybe it'll be an awesome dual screen emulation phone, uh yeah… That's it, justified :)

    • +2

I love a solid humble brag. Kudos!

  • Eugh, my G8S arrived yesterday and Ive started using it. A most excellent phone, but this. Yeah. Nice find OP.

    • same here :((((

still a good phone for a good deal. Tell you what, if you were going to splash an extra 100 for the v50, treat yo self on a 100 for something else.

  • +1

No Android 10 is a bummer, everything else is very tempting to replace my cracked S8+

    • Cracked screen yuck, do it.. And spend some money on a case protector fool

      • +5

First phone i've cracked the screen in over 25 years of mobile phone ownership, i had a good run

        • +1

          Props and votes

    • From my experience with LG, their android update are very slow and sometime it won't happen.

    • It is in Beta, though with LG devices its not guaranteed that it will be released. My V20 is only on Pie because of Lineage OS. LG remind me of early Samsung when it comes to software, stock version is good, next revision up is okay and last version sucks and has bugs ala my Galaxy Note 3.

  • Can anyone confirmthese have dual SIM?
    Thanks

    • +1

Two nano sims as noted in the jb specs

      • +1

JB said the same about the Telstra variant G8s, and were incorrect.
Does anyone have one yet and can see two IMEI/dual SIM control?
        Thanks

    • Checked mine and it seems like it's a Hybrid SIM. Nano SIM in 1 slot, and another slot allows nano SIM or micro SD.

UPDATE: Apparently the 2nd SIM doesn't work when I put it in the other slot :( :disappointed

  • +1

Can anyone comment if the differing resolutions on the two screens is noticeable in regular use?

Also we even getting the V60 here? Every article I've seen about it in Aus has Lg silent on the matter, which isn't a good sign.

    • I saw the picture of v60 on LG Australia Instagram but no-one confirm when it will be released

This price of LG v50 is very good but I rather wait for v60. V60 is better than v50 in any aspects.

Hope they will sell v60 soon

      • V60 you would have to wait til quarter 2021 to get a price like this one

By then v70 will be out if LG still make them

  • +1

Just placed the order, is there any fulfillment problem with JBHIFI?

    • They have plenty of stock in store, bought from Homebush.

  • Tempted to switch from S10e for bigger screen but slow update is a deal breaker.
Can't believe it's still running on Android 9!

    • Sammy is just a tad bit better than LG when it comes to firmware upgrade.

      • but lots of xdaforum supports for sammy

      • I disagree. Samsung is pretty quick with updates these days.

        • Not sure about that, but based on my experience with Sammy (long time Galaxy user, still holding on to S8), they are ridiculously slow providing upgrades, even security upgrades can be delayed up to 2 months for some telco variants phones.

          • @listentomystory: I think Samsung has improved since S10 series, and lol, 2 months delay in the LG world is still considered fast.

          • @listentomystory: Try more than 12 months with LG lol

            • @keejoonc: Didn't know it was this bad. My brother used to have international V20 and the upgrades delivery is as slow as Voda S7

  • Damn! Good price!

  • +2

Great deal post Op! Quite surprised they actually drop the price by this much, as I was expecting more like $699-749. This makes it one of the best phones one can currently get with <$600.

It offers a lot of features that other phones in the same price category don't:
    - 3.5mm jack
    - NFC (this is more for comparison against Chinese phone brands)
    - Expandable storage via microSD cards
    - decent OIS cameras without softwares that try to "beautify" the photos but ending up changing the photos too much (again, Chinese phone brands)
    - Snapdragon 855 chipset with 5G

But as long as the user is happy with the following drawbacks:
    - Single SIM (most people would be)
    - and slow or no roll-out of future Android updates (so for users that generally don't tinker phone settings much, and just use the phone as is).

    • I wonder if you can use Gcam on this phone…..or if anyone ported Gcam over

As for local warranty 2 years this price is great for that.

You could get a Oneplus 6T (imported no local warranty) or Xiaomi mi 9T (previous deal) with the price though

    • It says Dual SIM (nano-SIM/nano-SIM)- Yes on the JB website.

      • JB's spec doesn't reflect the configuration of the Telstra variant. If you look up LG's official product webpage, it does not specify dual SIM.

I would save the hassle if you are looking for a dual SIM.

  • Apparently the V50 is missing USB OTG, while the G8 has it. According to gsmarena

    • +1

Browsing a 32Gb Sandisk USB C using the built-in File manager as I type. Good to go.

  • +1

I am confused, does the Telstra version of the V50 have Dual SIM as it says on the specs page on JB Hi Fi page or not because usually Telstra will never carry a dual SIM device unless it was the only option available from the manufacturer like the Huawei P30. Tossing up between this or spending an extra $300 on a Galaxy S10 512GB or going for a P30 or V40.

    • Single SIM capability only for the Telstra variant.

Technically the phone does have dual SIM slot, but just it isn't being used. It is only used as Single SIM and microSD.

Funnily enough, LG never released non branding variant in Aus for the V50 as far as I could look up info for.

    • +1

Yeah, I'd also like to know this as i would much prefer a dual sim phone.

  • Amazing price, and so typical of LG pricing. Launch high and within months take $700 off and then people buy.

Loved my G4, G6, V30+ and V40+, but yes the lack of updates killed it for me.

If you can get past that then an absolute bargain!!!

    • +2

You can flash the V50 with a different carriers firmware to get latest updates.

LG V50 has been getting steady updates but Telstra doesn't approve them.

      https://www.lg-firmwares.com/lg-lmv500em-firmwares/#tab=firm…

      • I think the other firmware might contain carrier stuff not sure

      • +1

Does flashing a different firmware void the warranty?

        • if the diff. firmw is also an official one but from diff. country for example, usually you can just reflash to the original if you need a warranty claim.

    • +1

don't list G4 on there, lots of people got burnt by the infamous Bootloop :P

      • Loved my G4…till it fried itself.

      • I bought three G4s, all had problems.
Feel like I'm ready to be disappointed in LG again, damn that price though.

    • As usual don't buy any android phones at release. Experience tells me best to buy it during 6-8 months mark. Best price point while still pretty good for at least two years for flagships

  • +4

anyone who is unsure about this phone search "juan bagnell" on youtube AKA "Some Gadget Guy" He will show you why this is such a amazing deal

    • I'm a fan of that guy
      :)
He has many videos about v50 and also with new v60
      Great channel

    • which youtube? most reviews saying this one is not so good almost bad how this juan guy says the opposite?

      • The issue is besides simple biases is this is a kind of Niche phone… Eg the cameras and video recording can be among the best but often requires the use of manual controls which very few reviewers go into (as the average person wont either). The dual screen is also niche and so is having a high quality heaphone DAC. most mainstream reviewers dismiss all these points. This phone may not be better than samsung s10 but it is in no real way worse. and for $599 its a great deal.

If you know you will use the features this phone offers it is amazing value but if you just want to auto mode all your photos and scroll through facebook and use bluetooth earbuds then it is not that much better (and in the case of auto photos) probably slightly worse than the competition (again not at $599 but if compared to the s10/s20 and iphone 11 pro)

But again I put it down to bias MKBHD just straight up hates LG

        • I bought this because of Audio and dual screen, wide camera options. You can't find one with the same price

  • Currently running an iPhone 8. Looks like LG Mobile Switch would(should) move all existing data from iOS to Android which is very tempting. But have an Apple Watch that would be made pretty much redundant. That price though!

    • Unfortunately Apple doesn't allow moving of SMS and a couple of other things without a shitfight.

I even tried paid apps when I moved to my LG V40 and only got my contacts (using Google) and photos over.

      • I am hesitant to move from iOS, but this deal certainly is making a strong case. I was just looking at buying a used V30 to use as a DAC, so maybe its worth the trouble at this price. Also would be a massive camera upgrade.

        • +2

I was the same. Had a Iphone 8S.

Best decision I made. Battery life is much better and I can save and attach things to emails without running a finger marathon.

Any questions just message me :)

    • funny I was thinking about switching sides the other way, from android to iPhone.

  • +1

How is this phone compare to samsung S10?

    • Second that, opinions?

      • Everything I have read says it's not as good as the S10, however those reviews were based on it costing the same amount as the Samsung. For $600 I'm going to give it a try.

    • At the current price points ($599 for V50, $746ish for S10 if you have access to Samsung Education Store, more if you don't), and if you are just using the phones as they are. The V50 is better (due to price points).

Spec comparison via gsmarena (remember both phones in Australia are SINGLE SIM only).

  • +2

I compared this to the Galaxy S9+, and it's actually better in several areas. Shame there's no afterpay or zippay.

    • I'm currently on the S9+ and thinking about it but i did a comparison and it works out the same. This has aptx HD (good to have) + extra 500mah battery. Faster processor but I think camera's would be the same.

      • extra just 500mah on battery doesnt mean longer lasting, better check/compare review.
        if extra 2000mah then yes

  • Bought one to replace cracked Pixel 2XL. Shame she had to die. Thanks OP

  • is it true the battery life is not so good?

    • When used with teh atta ched second screen I believe the issue is

      • -5

well the 2nd screen is the main point of this phone so during production when they did the testing and get 3.5hr usage only, i really think they should not continue to produce and sell this phone. its a total fail. who can live with 3.5hrs mobile phone?

        • +1

Anyone at home who can plug in, in your car on charger? Anyone who carries a battery pack?

          • -3

@FKG: well, if you buy this let me know your experience finding charger every 3-4 hours. seriously. its a flaws

        • +2

The 2nd screen is an attachment, like a case. You can just use the phone.

        • +3

Anyone who doesn't care to use the second screen?

  • +1

    This over the A71?

    • Personally yes.

  • +2

Spoke to a sales rep this does have dual sim and you can use the 100 off gift card from the phone plans at the moment,

is there any benefit for porting my number (discount etc ?)

    • sales rep could be incorrect

    • Doesn't have a dual sim.

Rep was just reading what the JB site says.

      • Ill confirm in store, she said she was reading the box ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • +1

I'm looking at one out of the box, and it doesn't.

    • +8

      I'm sorry for your loss.

lol… funny that these days hard to find what's NOT from China.

Probably got to run around all day naked if refused to use and wear anything produce out of China.

    • +2

Your damn ignorant comments proved you are as ignorant as what you said.

      • -7

Trump-hating Chinese communist party sympathizer incoming!!!!

  • Picked up the last V50+ from the Bourke Street Store, thanks to shaolinbear for the heads up.

    • Single SIM? One IMEI on the box label?

      • +1

Yes only a single IMEI on box.

  • their v30 is an ozbargain favorite, this one is flagship spec tho for 200 extra, amazing option

  • Thanks OP. Bought 2.

  • V30 still going strong and lg v seried definitely won me over. Hopefully v60 be this price next year haha

    • Not the way the Aussie dollar is going…

  • Is the v50 camera identical to the V40? Bit disappointing if so.

    • The main differences are 5G, a bigger battery, and in this release, the second screen.
