LG V50 ThinQ 128GB (Telstra Variant) - $599 + Delivery (Free C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

4160

Found this in the catalog at https://catalogue.jbhifi.com.au/2020/04/16-apr-digi/index.ht…. Similar to the G8S deal from last week, but better screen, bigger battery and the DAC the V-series is famous for. Very good deal on a very good phone. Pretty sure its an all-time low price, maybe clearing stock for the V60 which has just been released.

Mod Note: Refer to the catalogue for pricing, as the site hasn't been updated yet. Site has been updated.

    • Telstra branded

      • +3

The only branding was 2 Telstra apps on the home screen, both can be uninstalled. There's no plan required.

  • I'm pretty dumb when it comes to phone radios. I realise the Telstra variant will work on other networks, but would there be any glaring issues with using it on the Optus network? Seems to have all the necessary bands.

    • I'm using one on Voda via Kogan, it supposedly has all AU bands.

    • Shouldn't be a problem. Optus doesn't seem to care what phone you have for VoLTE compatability unlike Telstra.

Unsure about VoWiFi but should be OK also.

    NOT DUAL SIM !!!
Description says it is but the one I picked up in not. I just picked up mine and will be returning it.

    • -1

please complain to ACCC maybe you'll get free LG phone as compensation

      • so funny.

      • Doubt it, but returning it for a full refund should be easy enough.

      • For a touch of inconvenience, you think someone deserves a new phone? You have clearly never called the ACCC. Wanting something for nothing will make businesses fail very quickly.

    • Returned with refund.. What a pain 🙁
Still a good phone with a headphone jack and a good DAC if you use only one SIM.
The extra dual screen case sounds good but it really puts too much bulk. Probably would have used the V50 without it.

      • The second screen is useless,at least it was with my use. Good idea, poor execution.

      • I think they've removed any reference being dual Sim. Anyone got a screenshot before they changed it?

        • Yeah looks like they remove the reference to dual sim, if there’s a screenshot that would be helpful with return as it just arrive and no dual sim

        • Ditto

      • I think it depends on what you're using it for. The second screen is great when I'm at home (all the time now) or when my phone just gets thrown into my bag (work, etc). But I'll take the second screen off when I'm just putting it into my pocket.

      • Did you have it open? They refused refund at jbhifi Parramatta

    • did the same to my lg g8s from last deal and bought samsung s10+ yesterday ( not dual sim either). Now regret not waiting the night, saw this deal this morning :(

    • You need a screenshot and evidence for it I guess

  • Just sprung for a S10+ but if I hadnt I would have probably grab this.
Good value for the specs. Have had good experience with LG

    • +1

I bought s10+ last night and saw this deal this morning. I did some research and yeah it is $195 cheaper but I reckon Samsung s10+ deal was still better by all the reviews I looked at and given that I paid $794 for it, I'm happy with it . Waiting for it to be delivered tomorrow 😁

      • Same :) The people I know with the S10 say its great

        • Yep, I went s10+ as well, Front fingerprint scanner, better software, Better Dac, better battery life > dual screen

  • So is there an Australian Stock that is dual sim?

    • +1

No. LG did not release a dual SIM variant in Australia, only the Telstra variant.

In fact, while LG V50 is capable of implementing dual SIM, I actually can't find a variant that's got dual SIM. I wonder if LG just couldn't get any telcos on board to carry it unless LG releases single SIM for the telcos.

CC is taking a beating this month:( Thanks Op.

  • Purchased, thanks OP

Just google searched this one for $450, looks like Australian seller, is it legit? Seems too good to be true.

    • +4

Part number says LMV450PM, quick Google says it's Spring USA. I'm not sure you'll connect to Australian 5G network. Websie looks dodgy AF and also doesn't mention it as the dual screen version!

I'll give the $49 more and get it from JB, but that's if it was my money.

    • +3

seriously you read that website name and still think it is legit…

      • +2

They've taken the name and logo from a legit photo printing company from the US.

    • The photo is a G8. The copy and paste description has some uncomfortable info:

      Technology
      CDMA2000 1X / GSM / WCDMA (UMTS)

      Service Provider
      Sprint

LMV450PM - That implies USA version of the phone. It doesn't have the pogo pins require to use the case with a secondary display.

  • Has anyone tried putting the Swiss firmware on these, for Android 10 (and possibly Dual SIM)?

    • ANyone tried this yet. The firmware needs to be flashed using the LG Up Tool. If anyone has installed and can report

LG Up Tool link - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nPOhAcn82kRSwt60LVQJt9vOn0r…

      Firmware Link - https://downloads.lg-firmwares.com/get/7c9a88014a26a0275334f…

    • +4

I will try tomorrow night and report back.

      • Does this void the warranty? Very tempting

      • Sounds good I might try on the weekend. As for the firmware if you go back to stock, can you expect not to trickle some mechanism that you have installed another rom? Like Samsung Knox or counter. This way by restoring to stock you could still get warranty

Also if the Swiss firmware allows the second sim slot to work not just microsd that would be crazy.

I wonder the dual Sim thing is a software restriction rather than hardware

        • I think its a software because the Korean version is dual sim yet has the same chip. I read the Swiss LG specs page and it also says single sim as it's the global version… Shall see if I can change the config to get dual sim to work.

          • @apptrack: Yeah if its software based locking the second SIM slot, then best to find an overseas ROM that allows second SIM slot setting to change.

I think it will be difficult to find a carrier allowing dual SIM, and with Android 10.

            But keep us up-to-date :)

          • +2

@apptrack: make sure our the model number same with korean before flashing the rom.

        • I tried using LGUP to flash the swiss 20g firmware, however LGUP stops and gives the message "Error: 0x5319, Not allow to change the device. (TEL_AU->OPEN_EU)"

          • @[Deactivated]: Hm I'll try in a bit and also try the UK firmware as it doesn't list OPEN

Did you try LG flash tool instead?

            • @apptrack: I coudn't work out what to do with LGFlash - it asks for Model Config first up and did not know what/where etc

              • @[Deactivated]: Ok I'll take a look later.

UK firmware is will take 7 hours to download. Mirror is slow..

          • @[Deactivated]: hmm I hope you didn't brick your phone….

            • @neonlight: Doesn't sound it, errors are a good thing :P

            • +2

@neonlight: No it is all good, flashing wasn't able to start.
I was able to get it into download mode (switch off, hold down (vol up) while plugging the USB in to the PC. To turn power down,(*only if flashing has not started) unplug and hold down power and vol down for 8 sec. Crisis averted.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Same thing happened to me.

Waiting for UK firmware to finish downloading and will test.

If it works ill provide a google drive link so its quicker to download.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Got the same error with the UK firmware :(.

            Trying partition dl instead.

        • +2

Unfortunately after spending most of the day reading forums and attempting work arounds, it's currently not possible to cross flash for the V50. It is possible for the V40.

Will be likely that someone will release it eventually.

Sorry for keeping everyone's hopes up and hopefully Telstra releases Android 10 soon :(.

          • @apptrack: Thanks for having a go anyhow.
At least the v50 supports project treble. If that's still a thing.

          • @apptrack: Oh damn…

          • @apptrack: Have you had a go at unlocking the bootloader? The model number matches the EU supported device here:
            https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader…

            • @Jayden16: No as they region lock the phones.

May give it a go anyways but I'd rather not make the device vulnerable.

              • @apptrack: I found the battery life horrible compare to my oneplus 6t…. Since we are stuck on Android 9 the only dark mode option is high contrast mode under accessibility…

I don't understand why the battery life is so bad for brand new phone.

                • @neonlight: I haven't used the V50 yet (waiting on case), but for the V40 it took about a week for it to optimise battery use.

Worst case JB are pretty good with returns..

                  Hopefully Telstra release 10 soon.

                  • @apptrack: Yeah but I doubt you can return for poor battery life. Online suggest 7-8 hours average I'm not getting that. Will try for a week and see

                    • @neonlight: Someone else on here returned it because their mum didn't like it…

My V40 lasts 8 hours of heavy use. Hope the V50 is better especially because there is 700mAh more battery capacity.

What is your coverage like? Low signal can drain battery quickly.

                • @neonlight: I don't understand why the battery life is so bad for brand new phone.

not talking about this particular LG, but the fact is, our battery tech has been around since dinosaurs age without any improvement. but other things improve a lot (screen tech, data speed, sensors, camera etc etc). so? the more advance the more feature you see on the phone, the less battery life it will have. the fail point is in the battery.

          • @apptrack: You might want to consider opening a new thread in XDA and might get some suggestions.

I read in XDA that someone was able to cross flash from Italian to Spanish firmware
            https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80755903&pos…

  • hmmm, I just bought one to replace my old iphone 6s and I'm pretty happy with the phone :) design, performance and everything else all perfect for me. Also got 5% off using a voucher provided by Youi :) so it made it $570

    • Was it easy enough to move messages etc over?

      • +1

ah, I haven't transferred all the data but I know that contacts and photos are pretty easy to move as I've done it before using Google drive https://www.android.com/intl/en_au/switch/

      • If you have google cloud sync enabled on your existing android phone then it will automatically move everything over for you when you log into the new phone. Last time I got a new phone I had to backup and restore my SMS messages, but you don't even need to do that now that it's all through the google messaging app. This may be a negative if you're concerned about privacy.

        • Android to Android is a breeze but IOS to Android was a nightmare for me..

      • You can use the LG mobile switch app to back up calls/photos/apps (many with settings, signed in ones mostly not) to an SD card (if supported) or PC from your old mobile, then just restore it on the v50.

Bought LG G6 years ago through a deal listed on OZB.

From my experience. That phone was unbreakable. I dropped it hunderds of times without casing on and that phone never died on me. Believe me, even the software is amazing so is the battery life. Don't fall for curve screens and marketting gimmicks and save yourself some money with LG!

    • LG G6? My LG G6 is running so slow after Android 9 upgrade and I gave up and replaced with TCL Plex.

  • Thanks for the deal OP!

  • Interesting that this deal now has more upvotes than the TCL Plex.
I wonder which was the "better" bargain.
I'm still happy with the $250 Plex, it does everything I want to do fine.

  • Would this be an okay replacement for a Pixel 2XL with a cracked screen?

    • +2

Dude anything is better than cracked screen

      • Just reading a few reviews and the camera is just average apparently. The camera in the pixel is one of the features I like about it.

        • +2

Cameras auto mode is average… manual is great so if you can deal with a couple dials when shooting photos it is a great camera phone. But obviously nothing beats pixels auto mode

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Yeah mainly use auto mode for photos of young kids…no time for manual :(

But $600 is still very tempting…

Edit: Just to clarify, use it to capture photos of our own young children…nothing dodgy! 😂

            • +1

@John Kimble: You can consider Pixel 4 / 4XL / 3a from that Vodafone deal or wait a month for Pixel 4a

              • +1

@bajirao: I've read the battery life is poo on the pixel 4 and they cancelled the original photos not counting to the online storage quota also, so that turned me off them.

            • +1

@John Kimble: Right, so you want a phone with quality camera to preserve as much details on the candid photos and videos….

Well, it has 3 lenses at the back, ultrawide, wide, telephoto (closeup).

              • +1

@netsurfer: Oh no one will argue the V50 has great camera hardware issue is LGs camera software in auto mode can sometimes slip up. Honestly I love it myself but if you don't have time to go manual I believe the pixel line would be more consistent. The V50 is greatly improved over older LGs for auto but google and apple are kind of a league of their own for auto mode (hence they don't even offer manual controls)

If you have the time to setup manual I would say the V50 is better than pixels but that's often not the case.

                • @[Deactivated]: When you say "manual" - you are referring to v50's manual mode or some 3rd party camera apps like GCAM, Opencamera etc?

                  • @bajirao: Manual mode. With a little tinkering to white balance and focus etc it can produce very high end photos.

GCAM can improve its auto mode too though so may be worth looking into that too I use GCAM on my G6 when I need HDR otherwise I use LGs manual mode

                • @[Deactivated]: Is the Google Camera software you were referring to GCam (Google Camera app)? There are ports for various phones including LG phones.

I did install it on an LG V30 phone I used to have (as the LG camera app is bad on the front cam for that phone). GCam made a big difference for the front camera.

However, despite LG's wide angle camera has dual pixel auto focus, its auto focus result isn't great (compared to other cameras with dual pixel auto focus).

                  • @netsurfer: yes gcam is google cam. if you happen to know the good website that has working gcam ported for xiaomi mi max 3, please share? thanks.

            • @John Kimble: I heard this phone camera is quite fast and has triple shot

  • +5

Typical dude on OZB: "Who buys LG these days!", Secretely orders the phone.

    • Yes speak to many people who got burnt by the infamous G4

      • That phone has crappy sd808 when 810 was available.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Got one with priority shipping and got delivered this evening.

    • how much is priority shipping? didnt see that as an option…
