just remember, if you don't buy a subscription, you can't save videos

    • So if someone forces their way through your front door when you are at work, you will have no recording of it if you don't 'subscribe'?

      • You will still get notification of a visitor on your phone when they come to door

        • +1

but no video recording for the police, right?

          • @GaelicAU: correct… i believe you can go to Ring and request it, but not sure if thats true.

            • +1

@87percent: That would mean they are recording even when out of subscription… I would expect that to be part of their policies/TnCs… It'd be interesting if that is the case.

              • @scud70: How else are they going to improve their products ;)

              • @scud70: I have, and they do record outside of subscription. You can access recordings once you purchase a subscription. Cheapest is 40 aud a year for one camera. Source: First hand knowledge.

            • @87percent: Yes you can

              • +3

@Tuffstuff80: So, no real need to subscribe. If something nefarious happens, simply ring Ring ( hello? :-) ) and request video.

                • @GaelicAU: Last time I checked on the Ring app/website it said if you don’t have a subscription, when the video feed is uploaded from your camera it is not saved as a video on their servers, so you will not be able to request a copy later as they don’t have a copy saved.

Edit: here’s a link to their privacy policy which has that information https://shop.ring.com/pages/privacy/?optimizely_disable=true

                  • @[Deactivated]: That's what I assumed as well, I didn't take up the sub for my ring door bell.. Just use it for live view which is fine… Talking to someone at ur door when your at work is hilarious when they aren't expecting it Hahaha

    • so true, its utility decreases a great deal

  • How to install this on a concrete wall? Is this very complicated?

    • Need to drill a couple of holes. Pretty Simple

    • This Camera is easy to replace on your current peephole on your door if you have one.

This is bigger than the actual doorbells.

Whats stopping someone taking this off the wall / door and using it on their own house?

    • +1

Nothing is going to stop them, but if you do a police report and send it to Ring they will send you a replacement one.

We had one lasted about 2 weeks before getting stolen. The thief reset the camera instantly into their account so we lost access of the video footage of it (since now its in the thief's account), and Ring wouldn't do anything about it. But we got a replacement, and returned it straight back to Bunnings where we bought it from since the cover only replaces 1 occurrence of theft and as security device it seems pointless if the thief gets to take your recordings with the door bell.
On the upside apparently the police did catch the person as they wen't around stealing a lot of ring doorbells.

        • Smart move!

They do need the proprietary screw driver to take it off

      • not even brute force is needed to take it off, very easily

      • or cut a hole in your door

  • +1

Officeworks stock these also. $179.10 if your price match there.

  • Is this version 1 ? Just to confirm .

    • +1

It's the Door View Cam, not the Doorbell.
I don't think there is a V2 of the DVC?

  • Is this V2? Easier to change battery from my understanding.

Edit. Nope, it’s the Ring 1

Nest Video doorbell or don't bother

    • +1

      Not in AU though?

    • I prefer DoorBird for local video access.

      • Totally. I just bought the brand new D1101V surface mount. So much better than the other chinese stuff, German engineering. Expense but market best.

  • Does this have a few second delay like the arlo?

Ring violating privacy by selling data to multiple third parties who then sell it again:

Hope your happy with the police surveilling you:

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/11/20/ring_police_spying/

Or come to think of it a random someone watching you:

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2020/01/09/amazon_ring_workers…

    Amazon employee:

“The deployment of connected home security cameras that allow footage to be queried centrally are simply not compatible with a free society. The privacy issues are not fixable with regulation and there is no balance that can be struck. Ring should be shut down immediately and not brought back,”

"In each instance, once Ring was made aware of the alleged conduct, Ring promptly investigated the incident, and after determining that the individual violated company policy, terminated the individual."

    • +3

Who cares if someone's watching the entry? For most people this can be seen from the road anyway!

      I wouldn't get a Ring indoor camera.

    • +1

Big tech needs to learn that people don't want their personal data gulped up and sold to shady data collectors.

Vague references buried in privacy policies doesn't cut it. Retailers selling this junk need to be held responsible too. JB and Bunnings should be smarter.

"On Sale! Doorbell camera packed with third party trackers! (User privacy not included)"

  • Those things are useless. Let us say, a delivery guy presses the doorbell and leaves a parcel at the door, when it alerts you on your phone, the guy is already gone. Also, many people are not comfortable with that, some press the bell and block the camera or step aside. It is a waste of money. I have removed the speaker in mine and am using it as a surveillance camera instead but not as a doorbell.

    • you must have a very poor internet connection or your doorbell is too far away from your wifi device. I have approximately half a second delay when talking to people remotely. I am using an Optus wireless broadband service for my home internet and Boost (Telstra) on my mobile.

      • My internet connection with Aussiebroadband is very good, 48.39 Mbps.

        • It's going to be more dependant on upload speed. When you're viewing the footage your actually viewing it off the RING servers so if you're upload speed is slow that will be the bottleneck.

    • Personally have found this very useful. Basically means you can answer the door from anywhere. Have also caught an attempted robber on video who went on to loot the next house after I answered. Footage provided to coppers. Yearly fee def annoying but not a huge amount and worth it in the end…

  • Does this come with our without the creepy voices talking to children?

  • To all the tin-foil hat people here. I hope you don’t have a smartphone, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Uber, WhatsApp, Google or other thousands of devices/apps out there. I hope you always connect to Internet via VPN and clear all cookies and IDs every time. I also hope you don’t use any services that ask you to sign in, including this site, online banking or anything else.

  • Eufy Door Bell Battery-powered ….

  • Too bad it's an Amazon product, no google home compatibility or very limited at best
