  • Thanks. Perfect for home business.

  • So this one doesn't come with the single hard drive (160 or 250Gb) or an optical drive correct?

    • -6

      correct

      • +4

It comes with a 250 GB HDD

        • correct :)

  • +1

would this be suitable as a general home pc? Surfing/streaming divx, word processing with word/excel etc? I have gathered i would need to add a sound card and possibly a HDD if it doesnt come with one, and would be prepared to upgrade to 2 or 4gb ram.

    • +1

Judging by what I've read yes. It will work as a desktop PC. It will need an OS. I just purchased one from HP & the receipt says a 250gb hard drive is included. Rather than a sound card, you can get a low-profile video card with HDMI output. That will transmit the audio as well as higher definition video. Obviously you'll need an HDMI capable display with speakers or audio output.

  • Is there a direct link I seem to have problem in finding it. May be good for others:)

  • link no longer available!!

There goes my budget for the month… LOL

  • Using mine for HTPC/file server too. Running W7 & Mediaportal (HTPC) & Virtual WHS2011 on Virtualbox (File server + Backup manager).

What I found so far is that for me, the WHS 2011 is only good to automatically backup other PCs in the house. Serving files is much easier in the Windows 7 shared folders anyway. So now I'm kinda thinking the whole virtual is kinda overkill and using too much resource of the system.

Does anyone know decent program that can automatically pull backup of other PCs in the network? The most important thing to me is to have backup of system image as I hate installing all programs when in needs of reinstalling Windows.

Most that I came across are only making backup of local system, not other PCs in the network.

    Thanks guys.

    • @jinroh
Suggest You look at Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Advanced Workstation

    • …"automatically pull backup of other PCs in the network" …
My experience with Windows is that, for a whole lot of reasons, unless you possibly shared the hard drive of each workstation on the network, no machine could "pull" a backup to another including the server. Professional network configurations just seem to rely on
      1. putting all working files on the server
      2. backing up the server
      3. leaving the workstations to need a full OS reload in case of failure.

But if you look at Acronis (they keep completely changing their product names from one release to another), if you buy a server version (can be expensive) you get Acronis "agent" to install on each workstation. Acronis server talks to Acronis agent which then "pushes" a backup image to Acronis server from the workstation, thereby getting around the problem.

Other backup products must do this, too, and I'd like to hear if anyone knows an alternative to Acronis. I haven't come across one.

  • FANTASTIC! Thank you SO much for posting, I've been trying to get some of these ever since the original $168 thread went up. First class posting!

  • very tempting…and fits in well with my moto of "it's not how much you spend, it's how much you save!" but I've just got a feeling it's more than I need.

Ive got a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, which has been a dog since day one (especially wireless transfers with windows). NAS is home use, streaming media to PS3/WDTV and photo backup.

I'm computer literate, but not overly savvy (no Linux experience). So while I'm tempted by the Proliant I think i might be getting in over my head and ultimately won't utilise the benefits over what a NAS can do.
Other considerations are: probably more power consumption than NAS. need to buy keyboard, mouse, monitor. Thermal issues (I currently keep NAS in a cupboard), would Proliant get too hot for this?

    • anyone up for convincing me why I should click buy on this one? or
    • anyone know of a NAS (not netgear) in this price range which I should consider?

    cheers

  • Fantastic post ! Just bought 2.

  • +2

damn you ozbargain! i am $200 poorer.

  • +2

    Thanks OP, successful purchase

      +1 for frivolous Japanese.

    YES! A THOUSAND TIMES YES!

  • Missed this item the first few times it cropped up; not this thime though!

  • Anyone that has one, could I make a dell PERC 6/i (Hardware RAID card) card fit?

    • won't fit in the case - and PERC requires a lot of cooling as they run pretty hot, I wouldn't recommend it even if you could fit it.

    • I have a LSI Megaraid controller plus BBU in mine. Fits and runs 24/7 w/o a hitch since about a month now.

      • which model number ?

        • LSI MegaRAID SAS 8344ELP w/ low-profile bracket

  • Awesome! Just bought 2! Needed a new server for work (and for home :p)

  • I will use one for VoIP to serve 9 phones running Elastix, one for NAS, one home media center, two for reserve or offload to friends. Have anyone managed to set this unit to do all these in one unit?

    • Why not run ESX and a bunch of virtual machines? Plenty of people doing that.

Not sure if it will have the horsepower, but the processor is equivalent to a Pentium D 3.0Ghz so its not bad.

Would need to up the memory to the max of 8GB though.

  • I can't find this on the HP website. What product category is it listed under?

    • +1

You need to follow OPs instructions.
Once you enter the affiliate code you see a link "Tech at Work Server Promotion" on the left under Register Now

      • What is the affilate code? I get "Invalid Log In. If you need further assistance, please contact a sales consultant at 1300 304 889.
" when I type in TECHWRK

  • Finally!!!! Just purchased two :-)

  • +1

and thus another $200 was lost to ozbargains..

  • What op said, then search N36L

    • Hmmmm, ozbargained….maybe…edit: still there…

  • Got another one. Set up the old one w/ 4x1GB (Staples) HW RAID and BBU. It draws just 45W 24/7.
This one will serve as VMware Server to test bed various virtual machines. They are nice and quiet units.

    • So the Staples drives work out of the case? I've still got one sitting in it's original shipping box haha.

      • Yep, they work no problems. Definitely not the fastest, but cheap as chips. I have put 2TB green drives in the Staples USB3.0 cases. They are fast now.

  • +1

Still there folks…. follow the directions properly. OP's instructions were pretty clear for most folk, but here's a little more clarification just in case you need it:

    1) Go to http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/, and type TECHWRK into the box top left hand side of screen.

    2) Click yes to pop up question, then a new promotions menu will come up left hand side with "tech at work server promotion".

    3) Click on that hotlink and it'll take you to the item directly.

    4) Purchase item and bask in the knowledge that you didn't miss out this time :).

  • HMMMMM - MUST RESIST URGE TO BUY……..MUST RESIST….
    (Already have two NAS's < 1 year old….with 9tb all up)….

  • Just ordered one!
Found the deal last night on Whirlpool and cannot resist anymore :)

  • Damn. I just purchesed 1 from a third party retailer for $42 more a few weeks back. Due to the 1 unit limit imposed by HP when they were selling these the first time around. Now they don't have any limit on how many can be purchased.

Damn you HP. I hope all those who have orders on backorder from 3rd party retailers cancell and order from HP direct. Should only take about a week to get going by the time it took my previous order to be delivered.

  • Thanks a bunch. I've been looking for something that'll keep my storage needs tamed when I move out from home and can no-longer run a few full sized servers downstairs.

  • Yay!! Finally got one! Missed out on the last 2 offers!
    Thanx OZB

  • Bam, ordered! Love it when I miss out on a deal then it comes back.

  • +2

I'm so happy that this is a direct sale from HP, so MegaBuy can't get their grubby little hands on any stock and try to profiteer again.

  • EXPIRED !! :(

I cant make the link work anymore ..

I even did a saved quote last night .. now I get this message:
The catalog for this quote does not match the current catalog that is selected. Please change your catalog to view this quote. Quote Catalog: Tech At Work

    • Still worked for me - just ordered one!

    • I can still see and add it to my cart. Keep trying!

    • +1

It is still there, I think you need to clear your browser's history or use another browser.

  • Thanks, just ordered one.

  • Anyone knows what is the dimension of this server?

  • Just ordered one, I think its still there.

  • lol I've placed an order and got an email and it mentions to call 132 347 (option 2) about questions concerning your order. After several tries I get routed to some random person speaking Japanese, the next call went to HP support call menu, fail!

  • dont know why i ordered but got one anyway :)

  • I just bought one ,Shouldnt have,
Feel a bit like a woman i.e Have to buy it cause its such a good deal.

    :)

    • Dead link.

Thank you for shopping at HP Online Store.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused. If you need further assistance, please contact a sales representative at 1300 304 889.

However, you can still order by following the OP's details.

      • Sorry if it doesn't work. That is the address shown in my browser after i followed all the OP's instructions. A bit tricky..

  • Right, so even though I know this is OzBargain and not TechSupportBargain, I've a couple of quick queries for the experts: I want to turn this into a HTPC, and my level of hardware literacy extends to opening a desktop case to dust it with compressed air. Any suggestions on websites for a "how-to" on getting this from the box I'll get in the mail in 10-14 Business Days? Also, anything I'll need to buy (aside from the storage space itself) apart from a video/sound output card (the aforementioned radeon 5450 sounds good, as HDMI is easy)? Oh, and are there any current OzBargains on harddisks that are appropriate? Many thanks :P

    • +1

Get thee to OCAU or whirlpool. You'll want a DVB card or dongle of course. Optical drive.

    • +1

Well once you got your video card and hard disks, it's just a matter of installing the right software.

Lots of people go with XBMC.

    • +1

For hardware, here is spreadsheet list of hardware that people are putting in their system: (from OCAU)

      https://spreadsheets1.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?authkey=CIm…

as for hdd, I decide to get couple of hitachi 5k3000 2TB, $85 from MSY.

  • -1

    Edit: Found answer.

  • I am still confused - is this a good deal because it would cost more to DIY a unit with same specs?

  • Dang. I just bought one. oh wells

  • if only i could justify another…

  • Running this server will cost about $200 a year.
    Number of hours in a year: 24*365 = 8760
150W power supply (assume it is at full load, and perfectly efficient)
    150W running for 8760 hours = 1314000 Wh, which is 1314kWh.
Assuming the electricity costs 18c/kWh, it would cost you $236.52 a year.

    • +2

if meant for business use, one probably wouldn't care
but for home use, you wouldn't expect 24/7 full load
and if you put Smart/Green Drives - it shouldn't consume more than 22W at idle

      • no way this thing is running at full 150W 24/7….. a) there isnt that much draw even with 4x 2TB WD Green HD's, and b) the power supply wouldnt handle it. A power supply's rating is it's 'peak' handling capacity, not it's general usage. Actual power use on this device would be 30-60w… which would mean it would cost about $50-$100 a year- damn good for ANY pc, let alone a server.

    • +3

With 4 3TB 5400RPM hard drives copying files etc on it will use about 63W

      • exactly

    • Should be $78 a year. this thing only use about 50w with 2 drive installed.

      • +8

        Power usages:

        Using a Jaycar power meter.

Idle ie when power off: 3W
Idle at BIOS with only ONE SSD connected: 38W
Idle at BIOS with all 4 drives + SSD: 60W

Idle at Solaris login page: 53W
Little bit of smb share activity: 60W
Copying one file to another server: 62-63W

It started up the max W it reached was 100W then it goes back to ~60W.

        • good work mate…. thanks for taking time to find out directly, as there will be A LOT of ozbargain owners who will soon find this info very useful.
