How's the fan noise at load?
Good question. Would also like to know if you can set custom fan curves. With my current legion 5 pro, the default max fan is 4000-4500rpm. After a bunch of testing, i can set the max fan to 2800rpm with 2% cpu performance loss (just touching the throttling point). No loss with gpu, and even 0.1% low fps. Plus way less dust in the heatsinks. So satisfying.
I have one, I run my fan at about 2,000 RPM for most gaming.
I have it sitting on a laptop cooling pad which has the foam sides to force air through it, I run that around 1,100-1,600 RPM depending on which game.
It can throttle sometimes with these settings but I think it is a fair trade off for the low noise depending on what I am playing.
There is plenty of scope to scale up and down on those numbers as well - during ordinary PC use I just run it on eco mode which is very quiet.
yeah you can set your own fan curves
similar to any other gaming laptop.
sometimes i wear headphones, some times i dont. headphones its like zero noise.
This get hot?
you can manage that in the fan curves. i haven't had any thermal throttling.
I would love to buy this but I have a $2.5K tax bill due this weekend. I wonder if waiting for the laptop RTX 5070 (or equivalent to this) would be worth it?
go on a payment plan for the tax bill, problem solved!
Just pay with discounted iTunes gift cards
What happens if you don't pay the tax bill? Can always play on this laptop while in court or jail… lol
True, lol.
You can't bring in your laptop to jail sorry sirs
What? That sounds awful then.
@FabMan: Damn fascists
I feel like this spec at this price is so good that I have to leave a comment
Killer deal. Just remember CES2025 is round the corner so if you are prepared to pay for the new tech tax its only a few months away for 5090m release (release mid feb but local aussie stock probably march onwards).
Will be interesting to see how the new -70 and -80 stack up to the 4090m but given whats being going on this gen im not hopeful.
Copying my own comment from previous omen 17 deals:
Omen 17 is an older design, so no 16:10 screen nor anything fancy of the sort. It being old however, also does mean there is no black screen issue that plagues the 23' intel based Omen 16s.
Yes cooling isn't exactly Legion Pro 7i level, but nothing an undervolt (available only to -HX chips nowadays, sorry your ultra 9 is going to have to stay hot) can't fix. Also raise the bottom of the laptop up - thank me later with this one. (yes, even bottlecaps would do)
Yes. That.
Great ni name choice. You are a dreamer.
I'm sure it will hold up to 4090 for gaming 🤣
mac has retina and ultra graphics with max cpu
Still won't be able to game as well as the 4090
Can’t even run windows on modern macs lol. Even ignoring the fact that the “uLtRa” and “mAx” components are slower in pure graphical performance, its about as useful for gaming as a toaster.
@eggboi: Apple never lies
@Dollar Dreamer: Ah you got me. Thought i smelled a sillyboi
@eggboi: red roses

Got one of these from the last ebay deal to tinker with 8k, 360 vids and 3D modeling. Fan was loud when rendering, as expected. Power adaptor is a mmm..monster. My only gripe is that its got only 1 TB4 port, having another type-C will be handy. Im coming from an 8th gen intel, so this is pretty quick. Seems to be the cheapest model for its class.

Is this a good deal for just under 2K? Probably not.
I like it. For reference, I got a nebula pc build earlier this year with 4070 Ti SUPER for around $2500, so assuming the HP builds go alright, that looks like a decent deal. Looks nice and compact. Not sure whst that means for fan noise etc.
I got this a few weeks ago on the same pricing. A simple review: the performance is as fine as expected, similar if compared to my desktop with 13gen i7 and no dedicated graphic card based on daily working environment (browsing, watching movies, coding), gaming performance is good, can play most of the AAA games on best settings. The power adaptor is huge, about the size of my two hands combined. the screen is just ok compared to my 2018 MBP, the keyboard needs a little bit of time to adapt but I have an external keyboard, so it's not an issue for me. The fan is like a car with a supercharger when gaming and will need a noise-cancelling headphone. Did a little bit of research, it will be beneficial to install another SSD for the storage and replace the RAM with 64GB(2*32GB) type. The battery life is not very good for taking it outside, only 2-3 hours on balance mode, eco mode did not help much, I didn't test on performance mode, presume it will be a lot worse. So, it's a machine that can be used if you like to switch places where you can find a power source when gaming, since the power adaptor is huge and power hunger (330W), I would not recommend bringing the laptop to the wild
Is that battery life for just browsing use? Tempted to get one as a htpc - do you know if keeping these plugged in 24/7 is bad?
I got the 2023 version and it's loud and cpu hot af. Do you run into any thermal throttle? I'm curious to know if they updated the cooler from the dumperfire I have. Can't find any images online. Looking forward to parts coming out to see if I can match it up and order one.
The liquid metal cpu application was terrible, replaced with ptm7950. But I think it's either cooler is warped or the socket itself. As I just checked it recently to see if the same spot had lost it's TIM. There was patches in the area but not clean like the liquid metal.
With the latest bios I'm able to do more thing in XTU and I can change the preferred max boost cores. Which has stopped me throttling.
Sooo tempted. Need to replace my Metabox 2080, but am seriously thinking of moving to desktop again and the 5000s coming early next year… I think I'll resist.
I assume this has the extra m.2 and only 2 RAM slots? Will it handle faster RAM?
Best way to get discounted ebay gift cards today?
A 17.3inch, 4090, at sub 3k?? Am I missing something or this is a really good deal?
I've been looking at 18inches lately and most of them that are 3-4k runs a 4070 max.
Every inch counts … I’ll see myself out
Is this best gaming laptop? It's freak 3 grand has to be something goo
Top level specs but massively cheaper than others with the same specs.
If only they had the same specs and pricing (similar) for a Spectr model.
Seems HP have very few models in the range at the moment with a numpad either. :(
Been waiting for a replacement to my x360 spectre for a few months…
Which gaming laptop series is better, Omen vs Alien vs Legion vs Rog? I can’t believe you endure fan noise though
I got my Alienware 18" laptop a month or so ago and I'm loving in. $2500 after cashback for a RTX 4070 and i7 14700HX. Cheapest 18" I could find.
Price will give you the answer
Don’t go Asus they have terrible quality control and after sales support. For reference my latest & last ever purchase from them is Rog Ally, first one became defective with fan issues after ~2 months. 2nd one now has screen issues and right speaker only works intermittently.
HP is cheap for a reason. Their gaming laptops are poorly built and designed often thermal throttling to 98/99 degrees running comparable workload that a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i can run at 70-80 degrees range. Alienware is notorious for its price point including sometimes bad software that comes with it & bad cooling.
I have a 13900HX/4090 Legion Pro 7i. With a slight -100mv & -90mV undervolt (throttlestop) on core & cache + GPU overlock 210Mhz core 630Mhz VRAM (msi ab), my Legion Pro 7i performs within ~10% or less of desktop RTX 4080 with 13900K. I often test new AAA games vs. YouTube uploaded 4080 benchmarks and for games like FF16, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Space Marines 2, my max fps on max settings @ 1440p native/DLAA no FG/upscaling vs. 4080 is often on par with games like FF16/Zero Dawn surprisingly outperforming some YouTube 4080 test runs. In Black Myth Wukong vs. 2 other 4080 tests, I constantly get ~10FPS less at max rate tracing, cinematic, 75% DLSS (80~99FPS) where 4080 in matching areas get 90~109FPS.
By providing some simple datapoints I’m trying to tell you not all RTX 4090 laptops are equal. How OEMs configure cooling, RAM used, vendor software/firmware all makes a huge difference. Some 4090 laptops often can’t even reliably draw maximum 175w.
Kinda crazy this deal is back, regret not jumping on it last time, missed it and went with a legion 5 with a 4070 instead
is the fan got loud noise ?
Its a gaming laptop. The answer is yes, always.
You can get some good performance without the fans spinning up.
Very tempted by the recent deals on these, but I really need a numpad! Strangely, the smaller 16.1" seems to have a numpad. Note quite as good in value for money, but still decent for RTX4080. Don't suppose anyone here has experience with the 16.1" Omen?
Is this worth the upgrade from a Legion pro 7i with rtx 4080? Everything else is the same.
How does fan noise compare?
imo no, legion better built and you have a 4080 lappy already (big jump is from 70-80 for lappies) 4090 lap only going to be like 10-15% faster if that.
Wait for 50xx laptops at least imo.
Also it was this price almost 18 months ago albeit for the i7 version (rebadged 12th gen) but still with full tdp laptop 4090, take that for what you will.
Oh and also I can confirm screen wobble on the omen is not great if that is also a concern
Thank you so much. I might go with a pc instead
Picked this model of laptop up second hand for $2.5k a month or so ago. It is a great laptop. Fan can be noisy under full load, but you can manually adjust in the Omen software. Omen software allows for easy undervolting of the cpu as well. Mine currently has a -101mv undervolt. Reduced cpu temps by 5c under load in gaming. Gpu can be undervolted and overclocked through msi afterburner to give it a bit more performance.
Easy to open and add a second m.2 ssd as well (I added another 2tb). Very easy to upgrade the wifi module as well to wifi 7 if your router has that capability. By default it comes with wifi 6e.
In my experience, the Thunderbolt 4 port can be temperamental with non-tb usbc docks. There seems to be an issue when the dock is attempting to charge the laptop (even with the 300w power plugged in) where my pc would sleep after 5 mins of gaming. Switched the “powered” dock out to a dock that didn’t have a charger and it had no issues. Unsure if it’s the model of laptop, or just mine. My bios is updated to the latest
Overall - definitely worth it. I’m loving it.
Can I run minesweeper on this?
I tried to use shopback. It wont allow you to use the code. So cant stack.
I still used credit card as they come with extended warranty.
Very tempted, good price for RTX4090 lappy.
Note there is only 1 USB-C Thunder Bolt 4 port, can this laptop connect to monitor while charging (with the lip close) when not gaming? I.e. similar to Macbook Pro.
I know for gaming you definitely need the big power block, for normal use would it works as above? Cheers
All laptops can be configured to run with the lid closed. This is Windows configuration that is required to be made to change if it will work like that.
(Look for "When I close the lid" and change the option to "do nothing")
You can also often do it without changing the setting. Turn the laptop on, and before it gets into windows proper just close the lid. Because the lid switch isn't "pressed" when windows is fully running, it just doesn't register the lid press.
The real question, is is that optimal? I can't answer that. Some laptops like having the lid open as they can benefit thermally from the open lid. I'm not sure if this laptop behaves like that.
Just a headsup for people who are planning to buy this.
OMEN 16 (aka shadow elf 9 in China) has fatal design flaws, which will cause blackscreen issue which can't be fixed (reddit link about the issue below)
https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/19d0qvk/plz_…
I am personally very tempted with this price and specs, but the issue of their product has put me off. I am not sure if this model has anything to do with the model that has issue, but I'll prob wait for something else just to be safe.
I am not a HP hater or anything like that, I am using some HP products myself, just stating the facts here, you guys can judge by yourself.
16 and 17 inch has different mother board. the black screen issue wont repeat on 17 inch laptop
Does anyone know the duration of the warranty? Couldn't find it anywhere on the eBay page (unless I need to get the Specsavers deal first)
Great laptop, got one 18 months ago. Replaced my gaming PC.
