Been eyeing these up for a while, but given the price, also been considering rolling my own with a N100 board and TrueNAS/Unraid (TBD).
Anyone know a 4 bay NAS case that is similar sized to a Synology that fits an ITX board?
You could always roll with the Terramaster D4-320 DAS that's on sale, if you don't mind the USB-C connector - let's you just get a mini pc though.
They were back in stock yesterday. It's going to an MS-01 so I'd prefer to use ethernet than USB. I mean I'd love a 10GB NIC but not going to happen with my current space/price restrictions! :)
You do you, of course. I'm curious about your reasoning if you don't mind.
I'm not sure what the connection has to do with it going to an MS-01 though. I mean, if you bought an N100-type mini box and connected a DAS to it, I doubt you'd see a whole lot of difference vs a NAS, if they're both on a 1Gb connection, especially if you're on spinning disks.
I get your argument from a reliability perspective I guess, though USB has come a long way. In terms of bang for your buck, it's a hard-to-beat solution I think.
Horses for courses and all that though :)
Take a look at the Jonsbo or Aoostar wtr pro
in time for Unraid black friday sale on the licenses as well
I'm planning on getting the AOOSTAR WTR PRO 4 Bay is N100 unit about $300 US - out of stock currently though
I did see them and saw a review as well, seems to be a pretty good ready-to-go solution, the 2x2.5GB aggregation is nice!
If you have have spare hardware (eg hp microserver), you can build your own synology with tinycore/redpill
https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tinycore-redpillI have been daily waiting for a DS423+ to go on sale and once the Black Friday sales kicked off and didn't see a sale i decided to build my own. It was 550ish a 1.5 years ago and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/795231 just has never been that price since.
Decided on a
n100 Topton Motherboard + JONSBO fan from Aliexpress
JONSBO N2 case from Aliexpress
Corsair RM750x (meant to be super power efficient)
128gig SSD
16gig DDR5 4800 RAM
6 sata to sata cablestotal: 620ish and more powerful and more drive bays than the Terramaster F4-423/F4-424/DS923+/DFS423+
I'm gonna load up TrueNAS on it.
I have been looking at a very similar setup. Which supplier on Ali did you go with, so many resellers with hardly any orders.
Just from the Topton store for 270-280ish

It was cheaper during the 11.11 Singles day sale and has been jacked up.
I could of saved like 90-100 by getting a cheapie but wanted something more premium.
nice build
Im in the same boat, Ive been waiting a long time for that 4 bay to hit that price again. It seems Synology are very confident in the product so they rarely go on sale. For now I have an old gaming pc with an i5 processor as my dedicated plex server so no rush. Ill just continue to hold out.
Have you measured power use at the wall for idle and activity?
Low power usage is the only thing keeping me with purpose-built NAS hardware.
I haven't got all the parts yet but based off my research idle it should sit in the early 20 to maybe mid 20w for power draw. The n100 does only 6w but that does not account for the motherboard and other components in use. The Corsair RM750x is one of the most power efficient PSU's so that should hopefully help. Its currently on sale on Amazon.

Thanks for sharing those links. Very interesting.
Are you thinking Unraid for the OS?
Edit: nvm I saw you suggested TrueNAS
@kizzaaa: Yeah TrueNAS Scale. I want to try and get this as opensource as i can if i am gonna DIY it as i don't want to be stuck in a ecosystem. I would of gone Synology but weaker hardware, high price, unable to update and replace parts, closed platform killed it for me. You are basically paying for DSM and ease of use when you go Synology.
@festivus4all: I'm currently looking to buy a DS923+ or DS423+ if I can get a decent price. But if not, I'll probably set-up a similar solution to you.
What type of RAID are you planning to implement?
Distress??
NAS from the big 2 brands are solid and reliable, but never 'cheap'. You're probably paying almost as much for the software as much as for the hardware.
