Any experiences with the switch board guys?

Any chance we can get the full catalogue OP? Thanks.

    • I've got one, works fine with PC / PS4 and charging a tablet/phone/wireless headset

    • Mainly Mens clothes, Mexican food + accessories,Air Compressor @$149, retractable air hose $49,air hose tools, a battery operated cordlesss chainsaw sharpener, cordless pole pruner…..from what I recall. Also Fosters Beer 4pk cans (Imported?)

        That reminds me.

How do Mexicans keep Eggs warm?
        They use Chicken Fajitas.

      • +1

        Thank you!

  • Pretty expensive for a powerboard without individual switches.

  • Is the TV a good deal? Seems the same price and Kogan 4k. Is it really 4k or scaled or something?

    • Probably not. It'll be a $400 TV. Slow to boot, switch channels, rubbish remote, etc.

      • +4

I bought it when it was last available.
Yes it is slow to boot, but once turned on I can't complain about the remote.
Picture Quality is good for price. Sound isn't great but okay.

      • Can't be any worse than Samsung

  • what if i plug playstation in hard drive port? will it power normally ?

    • +10

No the powerboard will detect that the PlayStation isn't a hard drive and will probably scold you for being careless.

Jokes aside, I'm pretty sure it will power your device fine regardless of the label. I'm certain these labels are only indicative and are for convenience (so you know which plug belongs to what device) rather than having any actual function

  • On the powerboard, does the TV line in / line out effectively work as a TV cable extender? I'd just need 2 shortish cables as opposed to one 1 longer cable?

    • +2

Correct, as long as the powerboard is in the middle of the two connecting points though.

      • Thanks for that

      • +1

Only extends it by ~1 cm at best, it's more like a cable joiner?

  • I wish Aldi would offer some decent 1080p TVs, as I believe it is still too early for 4K but FullHD is already widespread everywhere.

    • +4

If you're not paying extra for 4K why not have it? just means TV will use 4 pixels to show each pixel when playing 1080p, won't be more blurry or anything

      • A 4k TV with bad upscaling is not going to look as good as a 1080 TV

    • +1

That doesn't really make much sense, an Aldi 1080p and 4k TV would be about the same in terms of quality.

Last I checked 4k TV's cost the same to produce as 1080p due to how many they make.

      • My cheapo Hisense in the bedroom upscales 1080p fine and it looks better imo than on a native 1080p display.
Pretty sure this is a common misconception.

        • +1

If you are running it in 4k resolution, and playing 1080p content, then the 1080p content will look better assuming you are using any decent media device.

If you are running at 1080p resolution you will likely have some image quality issues, simple solution for that, don't run anything at 1080p.

  • Never bought anything from aldi before, how hard would it to be to buy one of these tv's.

      • +3

This was from 2017. They've just run the same special in 2018 and my store still has whole pallet loads more than a week later. There's only so much furniture people can buy.

    • +4

I have watched someone buy a 65" TV at ALDI. The workers will help you load it onto a trolley, but for a 65" TV the box is perched a little precariously on the trolley rim. You'll need two people to load it into a large car as the workers can't help you. 49" should however be manageable for one person.

There's unlikely to be a huge scrum of people fighting over 5 TVs at store opening. ALDI is running its TV specials so often now, that it's common to see stock in store over a week later.

      • Actually, second point. How big of a car do you need to transport a 49" TV?

        • If you have a hatchback it should be fine. Sedan… try putting the front passenger seat all the way back and then tilt it backwards. Put the TV in at an angle from the rear right. I managed to get an entire IKEA home entertainment setup inside a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan, without folding the back seats. Not fun, but possible.

      • I bought a 65" at Aldi a couple or more years ago ($1199). It was expected to be in heavy demand, so I got there early (8.00am). While waiting in the queue outside another fellow turned up who didn't even know about the TV special. His missus had sent him out to get a handful of groceries. He decided he wanted in on the deal. Afer the stampede I had one and so did he. As I finished loading mine into my SUV, I saw him looking at his car deciding what was the best way of loading the behemoth. His car was a Holden Barina. LOL.

Never bought anything from aldi before

      Are you serious?

      • I don’t shop at Aldi, I’m a patriot 🇦🇺

        • +12

Then do your research, Aldi has really high satisfaction among local suppliers.

They pay our farmers better prices than Woolies or Coles.

          @Kontiki:

I didn't know this. Gonna shop there more often now cheers

          Big Kev? Is that you?

  • bauhn TV's any good?

    • Not really, unless something has changed I've always found image quality an issue compared to a panasonic/sony etc.

    • You get what you pay for.
They are cheaper compared to a leading brand TV because they use cheaper, older, lower grade panels.
There will most likely be some backlight bleed, not that well calibrated colour profiles and average speakers (at best). May even run into a dead pixel or 2.
They would follow the same route as a Kogan branded TV.

    • +1

If cheap is what you want, look at hisense they seem to be best value for money

  • Decent price on the minis. Would grab them but Google already has ears in nearly every room in my house!

    • Why not upgrade from mono ears to stereo.

    • I have ordered a second unit, and have a TV and an audio chromecast. Any tips and suggestions on how you set them up to get pleasing results? I am thinking of linking the audio outputs, but keen to hear other ideas too.

  • Anyone had issues with the remote on their Aldi TV? Mine stopped working recently and I haven't had time to figure out why, all I've done is replace the batteries but that didn't work.

  • Hanging out for another 65" deal!

  • Good price on a plasma cutter. A safer bet than the discount one I got off eBay (which works fine I should add, but I'd hate to try a warranty return)

  • Is it a good idea to use this as a computer monitor? It's mainly for viewing text, not games or videos

    • +4

You're going to sit at a desk <60cm away from a 49" TV that's been designed to be watched from >1.5m? No that is not a good idea.

      • Raynes and his two upvoters are misinformed.

Sitting at a desk with a 20 to 24 inch monitor has the same pixel density (same dot size) as a 40-48" 4K monitor. You just have way more dots. Infact it is the same as having 4 of 20 to 24 inch monitors. I currently use 2 x 24" monitors so when I upgrade to a 40-48" monitor (or possibly a TV) I will lose the borders in the middle of my viewing area and gain double the height at no quality loss.

As another bonus - watching netflix on my computer will now be like watching a massive TV.

Unfortunately cheap TVs usually don't do a good job of being a computer monitor. Have a google, they usually don't display text as well as a monitor (they need to support chroma 4:4:4), and the refresh rates are usually too low to game. Hopefully the refresh rates are high enough that the mouse or moving windows doesn't lag around the screen.

If you do decide the buy one from Aldi and try it for 60 days then return it if it does not meet your needs… Make sure your PC is capable of outputting 4K @ 60Hz.

Why are you calling us misinformed when you yourself admit that this wouldn't do a good job of being a computer monitor?

        • -1

          @Raynes:

because sitting at a desk <60cm away from a 49" TV is a good idea

        • +1

          @grrrr:

          No it isn't.

It is to big to be able to see everything at that distance.

You will need to move your head to see things on the edges of the screen.

    • +2

Can almost guarantee this will be rubbish as a computer monitor. Tried to do that with the 60 inch 4K version and it was awful due to the RGBW panel.

      Worth a read: https://news.samsung.com/global/what-is-rgbw-tv

      • I didn't know about this RGBW business. Might have to stay away from this TV as a cheap and easy option then.

Although I am thinking the Hisense 55N7 is a sensible purchase, I visited a Good Guys store and the picture quality looked identical to the other 4k TVs next to it (notably TCL which also has a 3 year warranty).

Hard to know if spending more on a TV with good credentials actually results in an improved picture with the media being played on it (eg. a DVD or standard Blu-Ray).

        • +1

Yep didn’t occur to me either until I set it up 2 feet from my face, and it was obvious it would be useless.

The other big problem with many displays is serious input lag. Move your mouse or type something and it’s so very behind.

    • Not sure about a good idea, it depends on what you are comparing too.

But I replaced 2 dell U2711 screens with one of these for my work laptop. The real estate is awesome, 4 A4 pages on the screen at once. It's basically 4 24" screens but with no bezels in between. I had an array of 3 lcd's including 1 suspended from the ceiling. I still have the two 24" LCD's hooked up, but no longer use them, and will remove them when I get around to it.

The real estate takes a little getting used to. At the start I was getting a bit sea sick, but you adapt really quickly. I tend to divide the work area up into regions, so I'm not looking all over the place all of the time. As I said it's the same as an array of 4 24" screens, but seamless.

Could it be better quality? well the screen display is not quite as nice as the u2711, you can't disable the contrast settings when using HDMI, so you get a very slight halo around some text. But it is infinitely better than the quality of the 3 Sony 21" CRT screens I used to use last century, and I lived with those for a few years. and in fact better than the dell ultrasharp 2408 screens I used to use. The pixel DPI is the same as the dell ultrasharp U2408 screens, and those were awesome when I got them.

There is no visible lag on this screen, It's response to the mouse movement is perfect, with no visible trails.

I do not use the screen for games, or video editing or anything requiring colour accuracy, I am sure that is crap, I'll use the old Dell Ultrsharps for that if I need to do something like that in the future.
But for basic work, for Cad Design, spreadsheets, web pages, photo management I am very happy with it.

  • ITS A BASIC TV

The best settings are for PICTURE: Movie & SOUND: VOICE

and thats about it. Has freeview for online catchup but thats it for smarts, best to buy a XBOXS/PS4 or AppleTV

Perfect spare room TV and you can use it to game on at 4K. Wish it had HDR10+ and needs a soundbar for better audio as the built in is only ok for the evening news

  • Crap as a PC monitor I'm assuming? (no 4:4:4 Chroma)

would be used for Spreadsheet/MS office work/web browsing/Skype calls etc

Would be great to have the ability to split up into 4 sections for multitasking

  • I'm liking the look of Aldi's cordless drill etc X-finity system.

I wonder, will bunnings respond with a better deal on their 'Power X Change' drills ++ system?

    • If you mean the Ozito ones then yes they always price match/beat aldi when they have their X-finity tools for sale

      • Sweet!
Yeah. the Ozito ones. My existing old model's batteries are almost shot and Ozito don't have replacements.
Shame, as drills & sander still work great. It was a super handy and light 3 piece set.

        • Could try rebuilding the batteries - not sure if anyone out there has tried it yet.

Usually they are a pain to crack open so might destroy the casing in the process :(

  • Would be interested to know the actual model number of the TV if anyone has access to that information.

  • Can anyone report if the 2x Google Home Minis come in 2 seperate boxes (so one can be gifted or whatever)

    • I don’t think Google will dual pack two minis as one for ALDI alone :)

    • Yep its 2 separate boxes.
