  • My credit scores were ok.
Got approved for amex nab anz

    But virgin/citi/st george
Whom are the same lender (if im not wrong)

All rejected my apps. Twice in 5 years too

Maybe they just dont like me, or they are super strict

    • What's your score and when was your last application before this one?

      • when I applied if I can recall the scores were mid 700s

the previous app would have been 3-5 years ago
Edit: just checked my enquiry was jan 2017, and the one before is before 2014 as I cant see further than that

unfortunately my scores have dropped recently due to another app that was approved and the new legislation, down to 548

so im probably going to hold off any more applications for a while

        • How and where do you check it?

        • @lovepub:

          try credit savy

there are i think 3 types of credit reports, each bank uses one of them

in my experience I think theyre either linked or almost linked

    • It's my understanding that all 3 are different lenders.

Virgin money credit cards are provided by Bank of Queensland
      Citi are provided by Citibank
St George is a part of Westpac.

      • +4

I thought virgin was citi backed ….if i recall

      • Yes Virgin Money is owned by BOQ, but I believe all BOQ Credit Cards (and thereby Virgin) are underwritten by Citi.

        • I stand corrected.

    • How many credit enquiries do you have? My score is low 700's, with ~20 credit enquiries since 2014. During this period I've had Westpac, NAB, ANZ, Citi, Macquarie, St George, CBA, Amex, . but until recently Westpac and NAB didn't like me (ironically I had success after my credit enquiries increased).

      • how does one check their own credit score?

        • +3

          https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/borrowing-and-credit/borrowing…

          Creditsavvy (Experian rating)
Credit Simple (Dun and Bradstreet score)
          Finder (Equifax score)
          Getcreditscore (Equifax score

I believe all providers are required to give you at least one free report per year

        • use either getcreditscore or finder as they provide the Equifax score which is the most used score by lenders, since equifax have the most data.

        • @sw0rdy: interesting, I'd only ever checked experian, which got decimated this month (from 750 to 522!). Just checked equifax and 711, go figure! Is it unusual to have such big differences?

        • @endolphin:
Sure is. That’s the issue, if a credit bureau doesn’t have enough info on you - they may well be painting the wrong picture of you to a lender.

        • @endolphin: Did this change recently because of the new reporting on payments? My score increased by roughly 100 from 450 because I make all my payments on time, but a friend had his score decrease from around 700 by 100 and he too made payments on time so who knows how the new reporting works.

        • @nietzsche bargain: thanks mate, just did it credit simple says 858, ill track next month see how it goes.

        • @poiterbad:
3 new credit cards in two months, including a balance transfer, would have had something to do with it! My on time payment is and always has been 100%.

Weird that the impact of that was basically nothing for equifax.

        • @endolphin: Similar here.. My Equifax score is 726 but Experian score is 543

      • I have 11 enquires.
        About 1 this year 4 to 5 in 2017

Last year i got 2x amex. Anz nab.
Got rejected for virgin and st george
Got approved for nab last month

        • NAB will approve anyone it seems. I had two rejections in the same month with other providers. Went to NAB hoping for another rejection, but got approved :-O

    • I had the same problem with Citi.

I believe they are looking for high spending customers only.

This page lists the Citibank Partnerships - they provide the Citi and Virgin cards (amongst others)

When you apply for a credit product be it a credit card or home loan, they mostly consider your income and your ability to repay (serviceability) if you were given credit. It’s not just “credit score” or “credit history”. You may have a perfect score but if your income and serviceability don’t meet the banks’ criteria, you may not necessarily get credit.

  • great timing, I closed my previous one on the 22/2/2017.

    • how long did you keep the previous one? full year?

      • Probably four months.
        Approved for this one already.

  • I'm in a similar boat. I seem to always get accepted by Amex, NAB, Westpac and ANZ but for some reason I keep getting knocked by Citibank, Virgin and Macq Bank. It's terribly frustrating but after getting kyboshed twice in the last year by all 3 at least I know now where I stand. The funny thing is I used to have cards with all 3 as recently as 2 years ago. Perhaps they've wisened up and have marked me as a serial credit card churner!?

    • From what ive read macquarie are stupidly hard to deal and to get approved

Yet their products are nothing special

      • +1

I agree. Poor product and poor points bonuses. The only exception for mine is their Hilton Card which grants automatic Honors Gold and a free night after spending $2000. And it's free. It's become somewhat of a holy grail for me….

        • I also have this deal, except for some reason they bumped me up to diamond lol

        • Is that $2000 in hotel spend or everyday spend?

        • @spuderump: after the 2k spend?

        • @starburstyellow: No idea, when mail came through from Hilton I was put on Diamond. Has been that way for over 12 months now.

        • @spuderump: wow nice. Might look at that next year March when my SPG/Marriott platinum runs out.

        • @spuderump: $40k spend in a year is the default qualifying amount

        • @Wonka: Did not even go close to that lol

90k qantas points is pretty good for the $139 first year fee

Sell to TUVZ for $900 - profit

      • Why the negs. Tuvz is a family member. Part of the OzBargain family!

      • How can 90k qantas be worth $900 ?

        • +2

Just search Tuvz on ozbargain - yeah, don’t understand the negs. See the forum thread, TUVZ is a great way to sell points

        • When the buyer pays 1c/point

    • If you are a home loan advantage package customer you may be able to waive the annual fee altogether.

  • Tempted - i got the amex explorer recently and am now looking for a card for my wife - was planning on getting another explorer (referrer fee for me and 100k for her)

    • Curious if they will pay the refer fee for your Wife - given they asses the household income not just your personal income

      • Apparently it’s a done thing - rather then using a supplementary card

      • Yes, they will. Did it last year, so personal exeperience :)

  • Anyone tried the ole start an application, stop half way?

    • +1

Care to elaborate? I don't get it.

    • I did.. got the reminder email 2 days later to prompt finishing it off. They were running a promo before where they waived the annual fee for the other Platinum card (60K points) but I did no receive this offer

  • +3

If anyone else has accumulated a bunch of Qantas points with these offers and are thinking about how to use them, have a look into 'round the world' redemption, it's only 140,000 points for economy and 280,000 for business class and offer tonnes of flexibility and value particularly business class. I've taken over 1 million QFF points from credit card offers and found the rtw business awesome compared to single country redemptions

    • How long has that taken? You alone or you & partner?

      • Just me alone, about to get my partner in on the game this year. Doing about 3-5 cards per year

        • do you lie on your application? seems to me that ever since i got a mortgage i've been getting knocked back on most credit card applications (probably 3 out of 4 apps)… even though i easily meet all minimum income requirements, i always pay off my closing balances each month and never late on repayments on the cards I do manage to get… I used to be able to get the ANZ black cards in the past but they rejected me recently which I find ridiculous…

        • Still have to pay an annual fee for the cards albeit a reduced one.

        • @Spazmos: I'm probably a little bit optimistic on my monthly living expenses spend, and the split of mortgage that I'm responsible for.

        • @jdogg:

Yes but for me it's just a mathematical equation of what each point is worth to me. At one extreme the face value of of a rtw business ticket can be $20K+ (I went to quite a few continents on some nice airlines like Qatar), then there is the question is how much cash would I actually pay for it. I end up being happy to apply for ANY credit card as long as the net cost /points (cost net of any flight credit, or previously saleable Qantas lounge pass) is low enough ~0.5c in my case.

        • Just so you know, credit reporting has changed (come May). Banks must now report how long cards are opened for and when they are closed.

The cc switch game will probably slow down a bit.

        • @Spazmos: Do you close your old cards or has your overall available balance gone up significantly?

        • @Wonka: Yep I close down my cards once I receive the all bonus points

        • @DogGunn: For people who cut cards before switching and applying for new ones, won't the new credit reporting actually help? Because banks will now see that I am not accumulating too many credit cards, i.e. I can't accumulate too much debt because I have less active cards in hand?

I have had credit enquiries in the past where I didn't actually push through with the card, but felt like it hurt my future applications because other banks didn't know whether I actually got the card or not or if they were still active or not.

    • Do you know how are you supposed to book rtw ticket for 280k for business class?

Tried from their "Points Calculator", got a rate at 280k points (Class: Business Flights: oneworld Award (Zone 10)), then when I click on "book", it only redirects me to their qantas website.

    • +1

Shall try to convince the Mrs to redeem RTW next time.
We recently burned 780,000 points for First to Europe.
So it will be a while before we can redeem again!

      • Nice! which airlines did you go? I find the incremental cost of RTW (36% on top of your trip) to be so little relative to the value! You could have visited another 3 continents in First =P

        • +1

6x Emirates A380s, but 2 months till we begin.
Emirates isn’t part of OneWorld so there’s that.

    • Plus taxes paid in cash?

      • Yes, which can vary quite a bit depending on what airline/country you fly through. London/BA was particularly a rip off.

  • Which programme/bonus be the best value for money for me if I want to travel from Sydney to London (Return)?

    • Krisflyer in my opinion

  • What is income requirement, would be $75000?

    • yes $75k I just checked with them

      • +2

        Thanks, too poor to apply.

        • yeah me too but if you are able to apply for a joint account they will add your incomes together

  • Looks better than the Qantas signature deal

  • Declined for me - not sure why as I have never been declined one of these CC offers…

Is there any way to find out why you've been declined by contacting St George or would that be a waste of time?

Assuming I would have little luck with the Bank of Melb and BankSA offers currently as they are all "Amplify" cards

    • i was similar.

Never been knocked back by anyone except St George.
Rang them etc and they were very helpful but couldn't give a definite answer on why.
Just said to try again in 6-12months.

  • My only probably is the 5k minimum spend, just got back from a ski trip and i'm poor!

Does anybody know if depositing into an online betting site would count as a cash advance? If so pretty easy to do some arbitrage to get the spend up.

    • +1

      it would be cash advance

  • What are the best ways to "cash" or get value for the 90k qantas points ?

    • 90k not enough points….Wash and repeat till you get 500k points then you can go around the world using po8ntz

      • Agree, alternatively you could sell points here for 1cpp, so 90k would be equal to $900. But yeah round the world trip seems like the best option. This itinerary looks sick.

  • Guys when do you actually get your points with the St George Cards?

I just did one of the ANZ FF cards and got the points credited in about 4 months. I'm sure I read somewhere that with other cards like the Amplify they try and get one over on you by not giving you the bonus until the 1yr card renewal date. Is that true or rubbish? Any first-hand experiences?

    • Usually within 12 weeks of meeting spend criteria

  • Anyone know the min min income for the Amplify Platinum?

  • I was about to sign up for the Westpac Altitude Black

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/362735

But this one seems way better at only $139 annual fee. Anything I need to beware of before signing up for this??

  • Can anyone comment on the lounge passes your receive - are they the standard Qantas club lounge passes you receive in the mail or is it through the (not as decent) priority pass program?

  • Will charges paid to the Australian government (to pay for a visa) be counted towards the minimum spend?

  • Also, I had just gotten a Qantas Premier credit card. If I apply for this card, will Citibank be likely to turn down the application?

    • I intend to apply for both. Worse case you get rejected both….But depends on how you fake your income payslips

      • +1

It's worst than that. You get rejected for both AND also you will have your credit score impacted which will affect your future credit applications
