[INVALID Deal] Re: GelaSkins

13520

MONDAY 7 AM UPDATE

Gelskins have verified that they will not ship these orders. They are offering a 10% discount to those who are interested use OZBARGAIN

As we indicated the "deal" was suss but there was a great divide in opinions here.

With so much positive votes this deal got a life of its own. The Mods will now discuss this type of situation so that we can learn from this in the future.

Unfortunately we are not always here 24hrs and we too have a life and we too have a "democracy" in that we need to discuss and come to joint agreements, so those criticising us for not killing the deal, need to understand this. As seen in this thread there are arguments for and against etc…

We did our best to warn people given the circumstances.
THREAD LOCKED and link removed (it will just come back to this post) but not deleted so you can read the unfolding story…. Discuss in the Forums if you wish

Step 1
Visit http://exclusive.rogersthankyou.com/ and click "Enter" to enter the site and begin the process of getting a code.

Step 2
Wait for the site to load and click the "Open your gift now" button, then click continue.

Step 3
Tick the third box only (high speed internet), clicking any of the other boxes will not allow this tutorial to work, then click continue.

Step 4
Enter a random first/last name combination, for postal code enter; M5S 2H7, tick the two agreement boxes, enter a real email address (this is where the code will be sent to) and for the phone number use: 415 XXX XXXX (X being substituted with random digits), then click continue.

Step 5
Wait for the envlopes to load and click any of them. (They are irrelevant to the process of getting the code).

Step 6
Click "Open It!" to open the envelope and allow you to select a prize. The GelaSkin radio button is radio button number 4, so we click that one. (Rest of the prizes except for the donation require a real registered Rogers Canadian address).

Step 7
Click "Submit" and the code will be then sent to your email address instantly. (Sometimes it may take 2-3 minutes but don't worry, they will come).

Step 8
Visit http://www.gelaskins.com/rogers to input the code you received in your email and follow the on screen instructions.

Step 9
Enjoy your free skin with free shipping worldwide. You will then get your skin within 3-4 weeks, but usually earlier.

Thank You Rogers.

"Open to residents of Canada, 16 years and older, who are existing Rogers customers and who received the invite to the special gift offer & contest"

While orders maybe accepted by the system, when it comes to be posted and Rogers has to pay for international shipping, dont be surprised if they dont ship. (fyi only costs $1 more for shipping to Australia, rather then Canada)

If anyone "complains" about not getting this - we'll think of some appropriate penalty - how about skinning alive LOL

The poster implies they have got theirs but when you look at mac rumours site its only just been posted on the site and Mac rumours is a US site - Canad to US is a lot different in cost than Canada to Australia.

    • OMG seriously it is TOTALY not the same as taking someone's TV if they left the door open
THough if YOU LEAVE your door open you are inviting ppl in

  • +5

dont think of it as stealing. think of it as promoting :)
i mean, most of us havent even heard of rogers but afta this promo, tonnes of ppl will know about them.

    • +1

this free promo reasoning.. works well with me now. i too have never heard of rogers. maybe Myer and DJ should do the same..!

      • agreed :D

        • rogers is a phone company in canada, like optus and telstra

    • +6

Trouble is, Rogers don't care that a bunch of Australians have now heard of their brand. As they don't sell any services in our region, so ROI is negative. And the absurd idea of justifying this fraud, by the proposed use of their services on a pre-paid basis, when travelling in Canada is also flawed.

The most troubling part of this whole deal, is that a huge number of individuals registered here, think it's okay to lie and cheat in an attempt to defraud an overseas company, and that the moderators turn a blind eye.

It's degrading to Ozbargain's image to allow posts of this nature.

  • +1

If I visit Canada, I'm sure I'll be using Rogers while i'm there, thanks for the deal

  • mmm so good!

  • +1

    Thanks for the TIP!

Since I don't own any of the phones or products listed I just purchased a Laptop Skin for US$12. I got an additional $3 off by using coupon code "couponrefund" which gives a percentage off your order.

I bet they still make a couple of dollars off me, if anyone else is feeling scabby why not get a Laptop Skin instead.

  • +2

"Stealing! How could you?! Haven't you learned anything from that guy who gives those sermons at church? Captain What's-his-name?" -Homer Simpson

  • This offer is only open to Canadian residents. Not a great deal for anyone living here in Australia.

To be honest, I'm really surprised this has 98 +ve votes !!

    • -2

this offer is gained thru a 3rd party site from a coupon code.
to be honest you probably ordered one also.

      • +12

Sorry mate. I didn't order one, because I don't have a use for one.

You and I both have one thing in common though. Neither of us will be receiving one in the mail.

  • Does it still work?
I can't even access the first link.

  • +1

we are all cheats. Its easier to do so being behind the comp. I wonder if anyone is using the prize to donate.

  • +5

Everyone loves a good freebie… that's why we're on this site.

    But STEALING it?!?!?

Just because you've got a tutorial doesn't make it okay. I'm surprised at the lack of morals you all seem to have.

    • +1

Ask yourself this: What would Brian Boitano do? :p

  • doesnt seem to work anymore?

    • looks like the rogers site is down atm :(

edit: its up and working just a little slow to load.

  • Thanks. Cant knock back a freebie.
    And its actually good.

Everyone else get of ya high horse this is clearly promotional and creates great brand awareness.

    Thanks for posting it.
Will probably buy from them again!

  • thx, best bargain ive seen on here.

  • Thanks I did the steps exactly as posted and have started my Christmas shopping already. But maybe I might need to do the traditional thing and go to the shops as I so far haven't received my confirmation email….

  • So what does the mod mean? We're not eligible?

    • all ive described is a loop hole to get the skins as there are other prizes which are only for residents of canada

  • Take this down Mods

    • How about no.
If you don't like it, there's always the power button on your computer buddy.
Now let the rest of us enjoy it =]

  • +7

Its FREE so that means go for it, forget commonsense, what loyalty does Rogers have to anyone outside their revenue area - ie Canada. Go for it but dont come here and complain if you dont get it….

Take it down? 100 plus have voted for it, so really the community has spoken. The word FREE gets people every time. Maybe maybe it has a small percentage chance of working… Personally I very much doubt it, and I personally dont think its intended for anyone outside of Canada…. but anythings possible and since there is credit that is applied to an order by another company it might just work, although there are the personal ethics issues you have to decide upon.

    • … and since it says it's only for people who received the invite for the special gift … I'm guessing they'll be able to knock back most of the people who applied for this, if they want to.

I'd leave it up for the few Canadians reading this site, who happen to be Rogers members but don't check all the catalog email in their website.

I'm wondering if most of the excited people missed the bit about only for

  • +2

    LOL at the new title.

  • +1

I agree with others that it's not very fair to do this for your advantage. I ended up going through and donating the money to the charity

    • +5

I don't see how that helps..
That's just like saying you downloaded a movie, for a friend..
      Just don't do it?

      • Sparky did not inhale! ;)

  • lol no way they gonna honor this. prob gonna be over 2k+ orders gone through just from this site alone.

    • +5

and if it does, everyone can buy me a beer.

      • Sure thing buddy.

  • Sorry guys - Rogers will not be honouring any of your orders.

    • Why?

    • +2

they already did, by giving out the coupon code, which put a $14.95 credit in the shopping cart, we'll all see in 2-3 weeks.

        • +1

          thats nice of you ;)

For me, i dont really care if they honour it or not. if they do, hey great. if they dont - i dont blame them…

        • +3

@ ~8.00am on a Sunday in Canada; yer, I'm sure they'll be right onto that, guy! :p

        • +6

          What the hell dude.

        • +1

Wow, you actually bothered. I will only go to the extent of negging the deal since its mean to exploit a loophole! But not to the extent of ruining a (possible) deal for the many other ozbargainers.

          • -5

@polkadots610: They wouldn't have honoured it anyway given the conditions at the bottom.

            • +4

@ShortyX: If they wouldn't have, then you need not to NOTIFY THEM, smart guy! Now you've made sure theres no chance the orders will go through!
Thanks for spoiling for everyone else who didn't have the same mindset as you.

              • +2

                @cwongtech: yeaa…the tell-tales back at primary and high school…
                *stab

                • +3

@bob_wangkar: ROFL, yeah Stix might be interested in the Pampers bargain…

                  http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/30357

…since we all know dobbers wear nappies! :p

Seriously though, even though it's expired a few Coles stores are still doing them for under $30; so if Stix leaves any stock, budget conscious parents might wanna check them out! ;)

              • @cwongtech: It's not as if they wouldn't find out anyway. Thousands of requests from non rogers customers?

            • +3

@ShortyX: I guess STix is claiming to NEVER have obtained anything FREE?

        • +1

Seriously Stix who died and made you god and ruler of all
can't believe you bothered to do that
do you have nothing better to do

          • -4

@kiyone_ryukku: Sorry guys…I should have just neg'd the deal and left it at that. I'm all for getting freebies legit but I don't understand why this post hasn't been taken down? This is ozbargain and it's been edited to say for Canadians only??

            • +1

@ShortyX: A - We have some travellers here who may be Canadians and may be Rogers customers

B - It was up to 98+ by the time I found it, so I figured I better put in notes so people see why their deal gets rejected, if it does

C - I wasn't sure what's going on or why it was up to 98, given it got voted up that high so figured I'd leave it for someone to work it out

D - Why on earth did you write it up here, that you told the company?

              • @SomeGuyOnOzB: There are people of various nationalities surfing ozbargain. So means if someone manages to stumble upon yet another "awesome freebie" from overseas that provides free delivery to Australia, he/she can post it here?

                • @polkadots610: Yes. We need all the freebies in the world. They bring us joy and peace. Best things in life are free you know.

                • +1

@polkadots610: Hmm … usually we do pull these things down if we get to them quickly.

(There are just a few of us volunteers so it depends when we visit the site and if we have time to do modding when we visit)

However I've been trying to work out what this deal is and why it got so many votes (was I reading it incorrectly) in between spending time with family and friends.

At this point it's probably too late to pull it and better to leave it as a forum for people to discuss what happened later.

I've tried flagging that it's a deal for Canadians and that a person has to have an invite or else their order will be inelligible.

                  Ah well.

        • +2

mod removed (no personal attack please!)

If the company has a loop hole, they should have hired a better marketing department to have greater internal controls. Remember when Grilled stuffed up. They had enough pressure and sense in the end to get the offer back on.

And it only costs the company a few cents, where as if we had to buy it we would pay $12-15. Don't feel sorry for the company. It's a non living organisation with the only aim to profit.

          • +2

            @Ishadeon: Hmm …

I disagree about it being a loophole at all.

Theirs no obligation to honour any order where it is inelligible.

            Rather, you're hoping:
            - none of the people involved in the rewards program questions the thousands of orders from Australia
            - there is no checking of orders against how many rewards clients they have
            - there is no checking of orders against
            - none of the people involved in the accounts department questions all the extra expenditure

You're also hoping they won't check entries, despite saying:
            - you have to be Canadian, 16 years or older to be elligible
            - you have to have received the offer to be elligible
            - your information is to help verify that you are a Rogers customer (as well as for prize confirmation)
            - "please make sure you enter the same information as it appears on your Rogers bill"

Maybe go relax and think about other things that you enjoy :)

You've put your entry in. You can't change what will happen now.

If it arrives, that'll be a nice surprise.

If it doesn't, no sweat, you'll have forgotten about it and have been enjoying other things :)

            Wishing you well

      • +4

i kinda agree with tuzii. its simply a loophole. Anyone remember the coupon code given by paypal for dealsdiret.com.au? "paypaldeals"

Essentially it wasnt meant for us, but bcos the orders went through, they still honoured it.

  • TBH, you'd think there'd be a field for a valid Rogers phone number or account number or something in the process!

  • +4

    -1 not in good faith.

      • Haha, lol at the person who negged you.. =\

  • Thanks :) i just ordered a skin for my Xbox 360 Controller

  • +10

I can't believe 117 people voted positive for a deal which is only open to Canadians.

    • +10

I can't believe its not butter!

  • +1

-Not right, don't redeem if you are not eligible. And probably 100% of all (+) voters aren't.

  • +1

One thing's for sure…I wouldn't want to be the one who has to sort through these orders on Monday morning!

    • yep…but he could just cancel everyones…
      saves him time + effort

  • Omg…could've told us earlier about the canadian part…oh well

  • +7

Really just abusing a companies good will. It simply means less bargains for everyone in the future if they keep getting ripped off.

    • they rip us off enough.
if you think that why are you on this site?

      • +6

I don't understand, so making profits is bad? marking up on cost price is bad? so all companies should be out there making a loss? This site is about finding bargains but I think most people here understand that no company would last if they offered all their products at close to cost all year round. I think people shouldn't complain so much about being ripped off because no one forces you to buy that product or from that store, it's your choice and for many products there are always cheaper alternatives. Much of the time when people feel they've been ripped of is when they haven't shopped around enough which they only have themselves to blame.

    • Free is Free
these companies make more money that you can imagine

  • +1

we have 117 canadians here LOL

    • +6

or 117 people who believe this is a great 'bargain' for Canadians who have invites ;)

    • oi oi oi Canada

  • -1

ive posted a bargain in good faith, if anyone is interested.
i dont how a bargain can be in good faith, the business makes less money.

  • -1
    • +3

blank is not a reason to neg.

      • this. vote revokes

  • +1

Well i received the free wallpaper in my email account.. if I don't receive the case then I'm not worried.. it didn't take up much time and I didn't pay for it anyway..

  • Whether they choose to honour the free codes or not, Gelaskin must be loving this free publicity!

I'd never heard of them before it was posted here, but I'm pretty sure even if I don't get one for free I'll be looking at getting one anyway (the legit way haha)

So I guess it's win win.. and maybe lose for Rogers, but then again I didn't even know who they were before this either so they get free publicity too. Everyone's a winner!

  • WTF? From http://exclusive.rogersthankyou.com/faq.html

    Question
How long will it take before I receive my prize?
    Answer
All prize winners will be required to answer a mathematical skill testing question and go through a verification >process. Once verified, prize delivery can take up to 6-8 weeks.

But we have already redeemed from GelaSkins?? Weirdest deal ever.

    • because there are other deals, eg mag/newspaper subscriptions, which need to be sent to a publisher.

there is also a major prize, which is a LCD tv or some sh*t

  • Seeing as I don't have the invite AND not Canadian, no thanks.

    • awesome.

    • +1

There are many reasons to neg and the fact that you are not eligible is not a reason to vote negative.

      • +11

Really? This is oz bargain right? If Australians are not eligible, then it's not a bargain.

      • +2

finally someone with common sense, like i said, neg it if it doesn't come.

theres a loophole, if you get a speeding fine and there is a loophole to get out it would you use it?
of course you would, unless you dont pay enough tax or are cashed up.

  • +1

international postage is via USPS, it will take minimum 3 weeks i would think

gelaskin is another piece of thin plastic with some color printing, in mass quatities, these only costs a few cents

if they found out the whole of Australia ordering these via redemption, they can choose to ignore them easily, no fuss here. I did enjoy using the gelaskin creation tools though, its really free publicity and it sells!

  • You guys have to realise that we most likely will receive these in the mail. The GelaSkins website has no affiliation with Rogers.

    • Apart from when they try to collect the money off Rogers for all these orders…

      • +2

It's their own fault for leaving it open for exploitation.

  • Looks like you don't have to put in payment details.
I didn't put in my credit card details and it actually went through.

  • +2

Not a kosher Bargain - why hasn't it been moderated/removed!?

    • +3

Yeah, and there's something I don't understand. Mods, may I know why you guys allow this Canadian bargain to remain posted here? It's not even applicable to most of the people who surf ozbargain plus this post includes a tutorial on how to exploit Rogers website loophole.

  • -2

Not a bargain. I have no idea why mod's have not closed this off and banned the poster.

After a quick read through, it seems that OzPete and other mods somehow seem to think that just because it's free and people have voted for it, then it's fine to promote dishonest behaviour on their site. Shame.

Forget about the poster, feel free to delete my account, as I no longer want to associated with a site that promotes such ideals.
