Didn't stop him tearing up the cushion. Should have had IR taser capabilities.

    • Hi, buddy

  • Chinese only interface and app I presume?

    • Mi Home has English version and 90% of the texts are translated properly.

      • +3

Has nothing to do with Mi Home, the plugins for each item vary on the language.

I have this camera and half of the menu settings are in English half in Chinese. Google translate is your friend here.

        • +1

Does it use micro SD or full SD?

Hows the motion detect & night vision?
I've got the Ants cam & it's great except the firmware upgrades need hacked version or I get the dread This can only be used in China

        • @supabrudda: microsd and both night vision and motion detection work fine. Don't think the geographic restriction will apply cos everything used in mi home is set to mainland China anyway.

      • +1

Yep, Please download APP "Xiaomi Smart Home" from Apple Store or Google Play. English version.

    • +2

I was wondering the same thing; In the Q&A section:

      Question:
Hello! This camera is set European (international) firmware or Chinese? It will work fine with the app Yi Home? Or with app Mi Home only?
      Reply:
      Hello Man,
      It is international firmware.
Yes,It will work fine with the app Yi Home。
You can use app Mi Home for this item.

      also

      Question:
Is this product an international version? or is it a Chinese version like the older cameras? I want to make sure that it speaks english and i don't have to use a chinese app version
      Reply::
      Hello Alex,
      Language: English. This English version.

      • Hope this is the case as the screenshots are in Chinese with English translation. English user manual does help though, will see when users post their review photos on the item.

      • +3

Was going to buy the Lightinthebox version however i saw that

Q:Is This a china or international version
        A:it is Chinese version
Thank you for shopping with us

Might try my luck wtih gearbest and slow shipping then!

        • +2

I didn't think they have 2 different firmware versions like the Yi cameras. Especially since the pictures have manual translation over it.

I've ordered 4 from lightinthebox. Hopefully you can report back after getting your gearbest order.

        • @rexii2300: I agree. O think YI home cameras had issues with firmware cos they had their own app. This uses Mi home

      • +7

        "Hello Man" haha.

  • +7

    For the record:

According to xiaomi's website, this is from a crowd funding project and is not a mi brand product. It is compatible to Mi Home app though.

    Source: http://home.mi.com/shop/detail?gid=291

    非小米/米家品牌产品 = not a xiaomi/mijia branded product.

Smoke detector is quite an interesting feature.

    • +1

This needs to be in the title so people know what they're buying.

    • +7

It doesn't have a smoke detector itself, it listens for your existing smoke detector's alarm sound and sends you a push notification.

      • that sounds good enough, but I wonder how well it works.

        • The official description says it "recognises the specific alert tone used by smoke/CO detectors". Since it's a product aimed at mainland Chinese users, and knowing Xiaomi's poor record of internationalisation (e.g. hard-coded China timezone for Xiaoyi IP camera), I'm guessing it can only recognise the alert tones of Chinese smoke detectors and probably not very useful for us (unless our smoke detectors happen to use the same tones).

        • +2

@cynix: aren't our smoke detectors made in China?

        • @LymeLychee: yeah but I don't know if they emit the same tone. Presumably our detectors need to conform to Australian standards, regardless of where it's made?

  • Can this be used to record on a nas?

    • +1

me have the same question can we connect it to the DVR ?

      • Believe you'll have to flash a generic firmware to it and then modify it to stream to a NAS. But with the other versions of Yi cameras, yes this is possible.

      • the Ants cam cant unless you load a hacked firmware to unencrypt the RTSP stream.

    • +1

According to what I can gather, there was a post on a Chinese discussion thread that they have planned this in a future update. Now whether it actually happens or not is another thing. Also more updates coming later this month to fix the 2 way audio issue

  • +6

Awesome….been looking for one of these!! Also use FBGBES for an additional 8% off.

  • +7

Oh and according to the xiaomi discussion forum, 1080p recording is limited to 10fps….

    • -2

why would someone need 1080 recording for a security camera?

      • +2

Gives you better definition on further away objects.

      • +20

Because you actually want to recognise faces and read number plates?

      • -6

        Everyone, except you.

      • +2

I assume you don't have any experience with security cameras.

If the camera is covering a large area then you need the higher resolution to see the smaller detail. For example in a large room some one on the other side of the room. Remember lighting isn't going to ideal and a person's face may only show for a short time.

I can see value in cameras with even higher resolution (which do exist). It can reduce the number of cameras required or increase the area covered.

Without more details on this camera, I am going to give it a miss for the time being.

        • -2

yeah, it seemed like a legit question to me.

  • +1

I am lost with these things.
Does this ip camera require a network?
Or broadcast it's own wifi signal (inbuilt AP) straight to your own android phone?

    • +1

I've got the old version. It connects to your wireless network. So you tell it your wifi password.

To use the app, you connect to it via your network.

Setup is a bit different, done through the phone, like Chromecast

      • +1

So the bad guys can just turn your power off at the meterbox and render it useless?

        • +1

People who actually care have everything battery backed!

        • +1

potentially, you could have it running off a mi powerbank.

tbh, considering the SD card is stored INSIDE the camera itself, and no online recording, its the least of your concerns

        • @Davo1111:

          no online recording

Oh, none? So it has to be hidden to avoid the thief stealing the whole camera? Seems pointless if it's not a visual deterrent…

        • +1

@nuchalis: Plenty of products have the same issues. Just depends what you want. Could always go dropcam and pay $x subscription /year.

    • I have another version of Xiaomi Mi camera. The way it works, you need to turn on the camera and wait for the sound prompt (in Chinese) to add your Wifi details into the Mi Home app. Once you add into the app, it will then convert the WiFi details + your app authentication info into a scannable QR code that the camera can scan it. Once the camera connected to the internet, the app will then search the server for the camera with the same authentication info and once found it, you will be connected to the camera.

Btw, I found in Android, Mi Home is not working for these camera anymore. I have to download another app called Yi Home from their server (not from Google Play). It is better app and has more English part compared to the Mi Home app. But, it is inconvenient as you never know whether you downloaded a wrong version as I can't read Chinese.

  • Any idea if these are good for outdoor use?

    • as long as it's not in direct sunlight or rain. That's what I'll be doing.

    • They're designed for indoor use

      • I thought that would have been obvious, hence my comment about replicating indoor conditions.

  • +1

5-8 business days for the other website. Changes during checkout

    • I've ordered 2 from Lightinthebox. Shipped on 11. Still not arrived in Australia yet. so much for 5-8 days. they gave me a $12 credit

  • The car got broken into last night while on the driveway. Is this a good camera for this purpose? Don't mind spending some more if there's a better camera around.

Enviroment: Indoor. Ignore my question above. Hopefully someone can recommend me a good outdoor security camera?

    • Cameras are good for that purpose if you want to relive the experience. In terms of deterring or catching scumbags… well not so much.

      • +1

I disagree… visible cameras act as detterent

        • +2

might just get a dummy one then

        • Depends on the thief. I've got alarm systems prominently displayed on the exterior, multiple cameras and one time this would-be burglar still attempted to break into my house in broad daylight… with me still in the house!

Got his face on camera and everything and he ran off when he heard the dog barking. I was thinking, how stupid can you be to attempt this with cameras pointing in your face, alarm systems clearly displayed, etc… If that wasn't enough as a deterrent, I'm not sure what would be. Some people just lack common sense.

        • +4

@foggy10: Even if you have his face - the Australian police will show little interest. They don't seem to be interested in catching burgers or car thieves.

        • @foggy10: Perhaps looking at it from the thief's perspective all those warnings are suggesting there is something worth stealing inside?

        • +3

          @RedHab:

I'm sure plenty are catching burgers.

        • +2

@nereus: I've always thought they were more into souvlaki and catching Christopher Skase

        • @foggy10:

Not everyone's face is visible at night, might be the same people breaking g into house for car keys

        • @foggy10: if you're looking for something to hock to pay for your next fix, there's not much thinking going on, just how to get that fix.

        • +2

@RedHab: burgers Hahaha more like donuts.🤖🤖🤖🚓🚓🚓

    • buy a light sensor for the side of your house, and better insurance

      • Yep have the light sensor and the insurance. The nextdoor neighbour has cameras pointing to his car and they managed to vandalise his car.

        There's no stopping (profanity).

  • +10

Does this come with free membership of Mirai botnet to enable participation in DDoS attacks? 80 internet connected CCTV models were recently revealed to have hard coded admin passwords. These cameras use Universal Plug-n-Play (uPNP) to punch holes through firewalls by silently adding port mappings.

    • This is my question too - I love things that connect to the web, but I hate things that connect to the web in a bad way.

      Also, I hate internet fridges.

    • +1

Yes and free insertion into CCP spy telemetry web

  • new firmware: This camera can only be used in China

    • WUT?

      Anyone else confirm this?

      • Set region to mainland china

        • they check ip address, change regon will not work.

It's new model, even dont have an option to downgrade the old fireware

  • +1

    Grabbed one.

I'm not so interested in security. Going to see if I can set it up as some kind of sky cam - do some cool timelapse clouds, and maybe catch some meteors at night? Not sure if the latter will work, especially with the night vision/IR lights.

  • Is there any way to set these things to send you a notification to your phone when it detects motion?

    • the xiaomi app does that

  • Not exactly a bargain, since it is ¥99 CNY (which is approx. $20 AUD).

    • where from?

      • Buying directly in China

        • +1

And how can we do that? Website?

        • +1

@Bruno28: as in you have to be in China to buy it via taobao or their online store. I don't think it's in their online store yet. They were doing limited releases last month. The only place I saw selling it is their Mi Apps where you can actually make purchases.

        • @rexii2300:
Thanks for reply :) will have a look at their app

    • Is it actually available for sale to the public in China? I thought it was a crowdfunding product and funding has already ended.

  • Does it loop recordings on the SD card?

  • Can this camera upload the videos to a cloud drive?

  • Sounds cool, but some of the comments here make it seem questionable, especially longterm app-compatibility and language issues…

Any suggestions for a good comparable cam? (I don't mind paying more for a good unit!)

    • +1

You can always combine it with a local server running iSpy.

    • +1

I've got a hikvision that's significantly more expensive. However it does absolutely everything. has PIR sensor, customisable motion detection, line crossing. Can record to SMB/CIFS/FTP.

  • Is this a better camera than the Yi version?

    • +3

Yi is a disaster. Even in China a lot of people hate it. Took me forever to get it working. Not many people have this camera yet so reviews are few in between. Just DONT get the yi camera.

      • +1

thanks for feedback. Ill give this one a try as i can get it for $22 by using the points i have on GB.

  • So does anyone know if Gearbest charge international transaction fees? I have been using my 28° card so I don't know but would like to use my Amex if they don't charge fees.

    • Gearbest doesn't but your Amex credit card will (~3.5%)

  • Would this work good as a baby monitor?

    • +2

      Don't see why not

    • +1

Do NOT use it as a baby monitor - constant IR light can be detected even with closed eyes it can affect your childs vision depending on the frequency of the IR range

      • Thanks
        Will look into it.
Based on your claim should be safe to use during the day right?

      • IR light can be disabled in the settings.

  • How does this one compare for double the price? Its got rotation and more leds?

    http://m.gearbest.com/ip-cameras/pp_356786.html

    • I bought the one you linked to replace my Xiaoyi 720p camera, but I find it useless as a security camera because its field of view is very narrow, therefore it can't do motion detection over a large area. It's actually worse than the Xiaoyi from this perspective.

If you don't need motion detection/alerting and just want to view footage on-demand then it's probably okay. It rotates so it can cover a rather large area (just not at the same time).

    • your link is a Yi brand camera. Stay away unless you want to tear your hair out trying to get it to work. Great hardware but they screwed around with the firmware. Plenty of issues. just google 'this camera can only be used in china'

      • No it's not. It's the Xiaomi MIJIA.
