        • sorry my bad. got it mixed up with the yi dome camera. the mijia one looks good. might get one to test out too. meant to be able to record to router/nas as well

    • I bought one of these too. Bloody useless as the App is all in chinese and I can't set up the microSD recording without knowing what the chinese symbols are

  • What is the use of this thing ?

    • +4

It's an IP camera. Similar to a camera - only you don't have to be at the same location to use it.

It captures light and forms a picture, and you can view this picture on your phone. It can be used for security or a baby monitor for example.

Good price, but don't expect you'll receive it before March.

    • +1

      March 2018?

  • +2

Is this fridge friendly? I wanna catch the person whose been stealing my sandwiches at work.

    • +1
    • Maybe wrap in plastic to keep it from catching a chill

    • Just get a pack of laxatives and crush half up and put on the food. Then wait and see what happens.
Did this at uni to food thieves. Made me smile when it happened.

    • +1

A bloke i know who used to spend a lot of time in hospital kept having his bottles of coke stolen from another patient, despite them being labelled.

He got so fed up that he resorted to emptying half of a new bottle and topping it up in the bathroom….. Needless to say he never had that problem again.

  • Could attach it to the side of the fridge (connects to metal via magnet) in an inconspicuous way am wham! You'll catch your sandwich burglar.

    • And connect it to a xiaomi battery bank to power it up. Hmm could be onto something here. How difficult will it be to configure if it's going through a corporate wifi

      • Doesn't even have to be Xiaomi Powerbank - can be any generic Powerbank with USB port! http://imgur.com/a/ufuqP

  • Ah damn, most likely won't be able to get it before Christmas.

  • "Sorry, flash sale is over." :( was trying to checkout but paypal was pissing me off, converting at paypal rates to AUD for me. Just when I figured it out, sale over.
    Thanks anyhow op.

    • Yes sale over…… Was about to buy a product I didn't need….. So maybe a good thing! Great price though. Good find.

    • note: shipping time is (meant to be) faster with the lightinthebox alternative at the bottom of op's post

      • Which is not the international version..

      • 8% cashback with lightinthebox so technically it could cost just $31.95.

That said I'm still yet to receive tracking info from them for an item I purchased last week.

      • AE is much faster. They shipped all my orders within 24 hours and arrived within 2-3 weeks.

  • How do you guys record this without SD card. Cloud or to a hard drive connected to a router possible?

    • Not without a hack afik

  • Doesn't look expired to me.

    • Have you added it to your cart?

      • yeah

        edit… ah sorry my bad

        • +1

Not that bad….. as it does beg the question why they don't update the price on the product page.

        • It's not your fault. Blame the dodgy website with poor coding.

  • the brand of this product is xiaofang.

  • how would you connect power to it around the house? or even outside?

    • just like any other electrical appliance. It's 5V, similar to a mobile phone charger. You need to find an outlet or install one. Some people may already have power outlets outside for their security lights and such like.

      • damn, bit of a hasle

        • +1

As far as I can see it's powered by male to USB power supply, so a power bank or phone charger with Power Point into the wall. No hassle at all.

        • @rawm:
It would be a hassle if there's no power outlet where you want to mount it. Powerbank would be fiddly.

        • @rawm:

Yeah, would like something easy for power. Sounds like an invention someone should make. Some insane battery that lasts like 6 mths at a time :)

  • Can this camera be used as a dashcam ?

    • Not sure of it's ability to withstand 70+ degree temps, but if always parking undercover (or wrapping it in a small fridge box upon parking) and powering with a powerbank - I can't see why not?

  • +1

lightinthe box expedite shipping is now $29.47 when you get to payment page.

  • How do I set this up? Just received.

    • +1

Watch the YouTube link in the post.

  • Is it worth risking updating the firmware?

    • +1

I took the gamble, updated and it still worked for me - only noticable change was a timestamp (mainland China time) on my recordings, nothing else haha, but I was just glad it didn't die on me!

      • Camera is making noise in chinese when tried to set it up, can this be changed to English? Also how do I change the settings in the IOS App to English?

        • Sounds like you're not familiar with these cameras. At this price point you need to make do with the partial Chinese prompts/menus unfortunately.

        • @gimme: Yep, pretty much spot on. No ability to change speaker language from Mainland Chinese and app settings are largely Mainland Chinese with some English available. For a camera with these specs (IP, 1080p, size, function) to be available in Australia with 100% English setup and App function you'd be looking at $150+ so sometimes as gimme says, you've gotta make do.

  • Upgraded and worked fine. Apps buggy in general..Keeps crabsing, doesn't want to connect to camera etc

    • What phone you using?

On my Moto X and iPad 3 it's relatively stable. On my Nexus 5X it's crashy.

I'm pretty impressed with mine. Didn't realize it does continuous recording until last night :P

Wish the timelapse feature would output the image files rather than a video.

      • Nexus 6p running latest android with 2X cameras.

        On a NBN connection.

        Issues:
        1) sometines feed doesn't come through
        2) so.etimes buttons don't register
        3) switching between cameras takes ages
        4) can't open the videos that are saved as it doesn't download

        • If you have continuous recording on can you go to discovery and then replay? Lets you seek through a timeline.

  • I was hoping to find out if these cameras were password protected or how the login works for these cameras to prevent them from being viewed by just anyone.

As far as I can see, you turn on the camera, you turn on the app (registering with user and password) then you setup the camera using your wifi password and QR code that appears on your phone by showing it to the camera. Is it at this point the camera is assigned to your app login?

  • It's a nice little IP camera. Very impressed with it for the price.

Only problem is that my night vision isn't working :(

Also - using iOS app the feed is much brighter (can see in darker rooms, in the android one its too dark)

    • +1

There's a IR switch to turn on ir in the app

      • Yep I've got it turned on.

  • just received mine. the camera quality is pretty good. Night vision is also clear.

My main complaint would be that motion detection is absolutely horrible it has 50/50 chance of catching you waving hand point blank at the camera. I'm not exaggerating here.

DO NOT BUY this camera if you are expecting to use its motion detection feature.

Otherwise the always-on continuous video recording mode works fine but that'd cost you ~2MB/minute (~3GB storage/day). Also, the continuous recording mode have no audio & you can only watch them, but not save them to your phone so be prepared to take out your SD card manually when you need to store the vid somewhere else.

Lastly, it usually takes less than 3 second to connect to the camera, but the camera may occasionally crap out and you need to wait ~ 1 minute before you can connect (might be my router, who knows)

That's all folk, if you can live with the flaws mentioned above them it's okay I guess.

TL;DR: Good cam clarity, good night vision, worst motion detection ever ( Ignored my furious hand shaking point blank at the camera), continuous recording(dumb recording) works fine (no audio though), consumes ~ 3GB/day, needs internet access, some dropout)

    • Can you explain how to configure the continuous recording? Can you turn this off/set limit?

This is the only issue I had + obviously the Chinese OS is a major annoyance, but am yet to learn how to record/configure.

      Thanks in advance!

      • It seems from your previous comments that you've already figured out the recording feature though? unless I'm misunderstanding something

        anyway, Here it is.

        1. This assume camera wifi already configured & SD card inserted.

        2. Access camera.

        3. go the configure option by clicking the '…' button on top right corner.

        4. go to 'Camera settings' > toggle 'Continuous recording' > wait for 'success dialog'. Ensure the device detects your Micro SD Card & showing remaining storage. If not, exit>re enter 'Camera settings' until it works.

        5. To access video. go to '…' > 'Discovery' > 'Replay'

        6. you should see the video file recorded every 5 minutes interval with their respective time stamp. Click them to re-play.

        7. I don't think you can 'save to mobile phone' from here. Manual SD card transferred might be required.

No idea how to set limit. Also no idea what happens if no storage left. Hopefully it will re-write itself rather than just stop recording. We'll see…
        hope this helps.

Ps. If anyone can test motion detection reliability then i'd be appreciated. Mine just have really bad detection and I want to know whether that's just my unit or not.

        • No, despite knowing a fair bit through trial and error with this device (and can vouch for its cost/value) I hadn't got my head around recording video. As far as my unit's motion detection goes I think it works okay but will give it another test ASAP and let you know.
Thanks for the video recording info - much appreciated.

        • @rawm:

No problem. I had it set up in the living room at the top wall ceiling, and it failed to detect any motion when anyone enter/leave the area. It only detects when I wave my hand directly at the camera point-blank so that's very concerning ….

Great strides are being taken on the 'hax'ing on this device.

Progress on a daily or even hourly basis ATM - https://github.com/fritz-smh/yi-hack/issues/118#issuecomment…

Great little IP camera for the price. Let's see if they can pull off some knarly hax.
