Reporter Wants to Write Article on Ultimate OzBargainers + Epic Memorable Deals throughout The Years. Suggestions?

Update: Here is the article: SMH:From birdseed loaf to pulled pork rort, site swaps tips on the cheap, cheap, cheap

A reporter for a major newspaper in Australia wants to run a piece about the OzBargain community and is looking to talk to some members. They want to talk to some people who live the bargain lifestyle (don't we all) and have some interesting bargain stories. The caveat? You must be willing to identify yourself in the article with your full name but you don't need to mention username.

The reporter is an OzBargainer himself and he gets how the community works. So looking for suggestions of users or if you are willing to do it, let me know in the comments here or PM me.

Also epic bargains over the 10 years. We've come up with the following:

McFlurry Hack
Kogan $5 Lens Mug as he mentioned it in his talks
2012 Dick Smith Gaming Sale

Free $5 Paypal Credit

  • Tell him he's dreamin'.

  • write and submit the whole article from a $1 sim card.

    • I visited every 7/11 in the Melbourne CBD and ended up collecting over 100 of these.

  • My vote is for the SportsDirect $1 Slazenger t-shirts & shorts from 2015!

  • So many good memories, plus I have 1587 free Udemy courses and 4386 free Kindle books

  • Pizza mogul

    Rorted this hard

    • I won an Xbox One Halo bundle, and I think about $200 or so in Mogul Dough

Doubt you got as much value out of them as I did ;)

  • I always liked the creative hacks with people working together to get the best result.
One that sticks out for me was the PS3 games hack.. buying specific pre-owned games from EB/Game and trading at JB for free brand new game, then trading that for EB credit to get more copies of specific games to trade at JB for free games.. etc. Proven or not, pretty sure someone said they had hit every store in their area and turned 4 pre-owned games into a console by the end.

  • Bonds Fit range $10 cashback was one of my faves.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/18514

Kmart had some of the Bonds fit range on clearance at the time for $7.50, so you made a $2.50 profit on each pair. The only problem was you needed a seperate receipt for each claim.

The checkout chick was really good about it and put through my 20 odd pairs as fast as she could. I seem to remember I paid with a heap of $20 coles myer gift cards that I got at a discount, so every few pairs she had to put through a partial payment haha!

plenty of major travel deals that can't be found at online search engines, but can be found on ozbargain

  • So when and where can we expect this article?

  • +1

OK, here is the article in the SMH. Well done everyone. He took a lot of the comments, deals, and forum posts pointed out here.

    • +7

Not a fan of the article to be honest, first 2 lines that come up (and show on my screen without scrolling) make us look like idiots :/

Can you save money by grinding down birdseed into flour, and then making bread with it?

Does pulled pork have less pork in it than … non-pulled pork? Does that make it a scam?

Site is about more than the forums

      • +4

Totally agree, so one member makes a comment about birdseed, which was probably a joke anyway & it's in the title & takes up 4 lines in the article, because we are all at home grinding bird seed to save money!
And not one mention of the famous Professionals line.

  • The article is currently featured on TheAge.com.au right in the middle of front page without scrolling with photo of Tom.

    • Where is it? I don't see it, got a link? Does look exactly like the one from SMH by the same guy or is this one from a different guy?

      • SMH and The Age are both Fairfax papers. They share all of their non-local content so article is the same. Article is long gone from front page as stories rotate out every few hours.

The print version is slightly different (e.g. no links) but same picture.

  • The article needs editing, some of the quotes don't make any sense.

  • saw the article on Page 11 of The Age today!

  • SMH article seemed kinda flakey. Couldn't find the one in The Age. Should have mentioned Eneloops and Band28 somewhere.

  • +1

3 paragraphs devoted to one member who drove to masters twice to buy one mirror, how stupid.

    • +2

You are talking about commercial paper journalism here :) They are looking for "stories" and care-less about Professionals' everyday life. It could be worse if written by Daily Telegraph or ACA…

    • I should have told them a story about how I once drove to another city to get a $30 bargain.

  • Ones my friends always laugh at me for

    Quilton toilet paper someone mentioned.
The coffee pod machines with the $75 cash back. I actually managed to get office works to price match 5 of them and made $45 after postage and gave the machines to friends.
