Herald Sun have come to their senses and changed the T&C of the deal, stating you must remain signed up for 12 weeks to receive the $40 gift card.

Original Deal:
UPDATE - CLARIFICATION OF $40 GIFT CARD: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/entertainment/competitions/subsc…
Taken from that page: "All features described below are valid for those who subscribe to any of the four Herald Sun subscription packages on offer, which start from just $1 for the first 28 days.

This offer is open to new subscribers only and ends on March 31.

The offer includes:

$40 REBEL GIFT CARD
You’ll get $40 to spend on whatever you like at Rebel, including AFL team gear, at any Australian store or online at www.rebelsport.com.au "

Deal:
I know Herald Sun has had the $1 for 28 days subscription for a while now, but until 31st March 2014 you can also get a $40 gift card to spend on whatever you like at Rebel in store or online. The gift card is sent to you within 14 days of subscription, giving you plenty of time to cancel. If you dont cancel, it then reverts to $4.00 per week.
You can also get the Sunday paper delivered in the $1 subscription too, but that reverts to $4.50 after the promotional period, which I think is pretty good value anyway

From itsmemeow's comment:
You can select any of the 4 subscriptions, which start at $1 - this includes the digital only bundle. You will receive a $40 Rebel Sports gift card

Based on the terms and conditions on the subscribe page - the rebel gift card will be sent out within 14 days, so presumably you could not cancel your subscription before then if you intend to.

You only pay $1 now via credit card or PayPal. Your subscription will renew in approx. 3 weeks. Based on registering today, my renewal is March 23rd and I would be charged $16 based on the plan I selected.

According to their FAQ's (once registered), their cancellation policy is as follows:

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my subscription?
Your digital access will be cancelled within 5 business days, but home delivery may continue for up to a further 5 business days (those of you in WA should allow up to 10 business days for deliveries to cease).
Oh, and we won’t charge you a cancellation fee.

Terms and Conditions

Renewals occur unless cancelled.
Payment in advance by credit/debit card or Paypal only.
Offer only available where regular home delivery exists for VIC residents and where no additional freight is charged.
Offer available for limited time only.
New subscribers only.
Rebel $40 Gift Card To take up the Rebel Gift Card offer you must subscribe to a News + Digital or Digital Bundle subscription.

uh.. so someone will be able to use different 100 names to subsribe, spend $100 and get $4000 worth of rebel stuffs.

    • Pretty sure they will have some system or method in place to prevent that.

      • +31

Only one way to find out…

      • -1

ratio $1:$40 is so high i think some will try to abuse.
unless you cant use more than one gift card in one transactions in rebel (but i doubt).
even $40 can get you a nike singlet i think.. so….

        • +1

… So that's a lot of nike singlets!

        • naw confirmed via Robina rebel you can use multiple or at least two in a single purchase.
Just hope the paper doesn't mind multiple people under the same address.
          I mean obviously who wouldn't want $40 for $1.

    • +6

uh.. so broden will be able to use different 100 names to subsribe, spend $100 and get $4000 worth of rebel stuffs

      FTFY

    • +1

They might send the gift card by register post, then if your name doesnt match you cant collect it.

      • Registered post/parcels just need a proof of address as far as I know. http://auspost.com.au/parcels-mail/registered-post.html

I used to sign for all kinds of things for other family members. I think some official documents can be sent with the option to only deliver to addressee. (Passport)

        • I've had a few "sorry we missed u" cards, and they have all said authorization for someone else to pick up. Although generally have the sane last name, it should be a.o.k

    • +3

You might end up with so many copies you'll have to hand them out everyday like the MX

  • umm, correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure it only applies to $10 for 28 days plan.. it says based on 7 day delivery

    edit: link updated

I think the "^Based on 4 weeks subscription to Digital + 7 day delivery" from the second screenshot refers to the $76 of value you receive from that plan specifically.

But it seems the offer applies to all four plans.

    • Pretty sure you're wrong - the first screenshot you posted states clearly that it applies to any of the offers

      • thanks, it was a bit confusing until a more accurate correct link was posted

  • +10

too tiring to digest the T&C…

what's the catch, in a simple words?

    • +6
      1. Sign up to any one of the 4 digital subscriptions listen on Herald Sun, starting from $1 for 28 days.
      2. Wait for $40 gift card to arrive.
      3. Cancel Subscription before it is debited, which is roughly 3 weeks after you sign up. Gift car will be sent inside 2 weeks of subscription, giving you a week to cancel.

The T&C are very very confusing, but if you take the words from the updated link, it does state that any 4 of the subscriptions will be eligible for everything listed.

      • +19

Gift car will be sent inside 2 weeks of subscription

Subscription done, now waiting for the car to arrive in two weeks time…

        • +2

          omergerd best bagrin evar!

        • omergerd best bagrin evar!

I know duh, are you ready for the parade tomorrow?

      • Too much of a hassle IMO, as everything at Rebel is overpriced anyway. Last time I bought a pair of boots Pauls was 60 bucks cheaper on a 180 pair at rebel, so saved more than this card is worth.

Basically will end up going through the motions to get something I don't need that would typically cost hakf as much somewhere else anyway

  • +3

    VIC only?

    • Several other state papers too. See links posted by others below.

  • Thanks! I'll just pretend I found that $1 on the ground and exchange it for some newspapers and a $40 gift card!

    • Why do you have to sign to the $10 plan? To take up the Rebel Gift Card offer you must subscribe to a News + Digital or Digital Bundle subscription. All the subscriptions are news+ Full digital Subscriptions, or if you get the ones with the paper, it is a news+ bundle

    • thats it! stil…you get $40 from $10
edit:.. .someone need to call and confirm that

  • +2

Just make the call, the customer service operator confirms it :)

    Thanks OP.

    • +2

Cool, it also states it here: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/entertainment/competitions/subsc….

    • +5

Confirms what, $40 card for $1 subscription or for the $10 one?

  • thanks op, looks good if it works

  • +3

Only condition for the voucher is: "To take up the Rebel Gift Card offer you must subscribe to a News + Digital or Digital Bundle subscription."

    • -3

Which to me makes it sound like it's $10 for the $40 voucher. Still $30 voucher isn't bad.

God I hate when T&Cs are vague.

      • +4

I updated the link to the deal page, that says any of the four subscriptions will get it.

      • No, the $1 option is a digital bundle subscription so it will qualify.

        • Ah right I was looking at this bit:

"Based on 4 weeks subscription to Digital + 7 day delivery"

        • Yeah, that picture was very confusing. I think that bundle showed the highest dollar saving, so they used that.

  • Thanks OP. I need to buy a Snorkel, and spending $1 on it (and another $10 worth of stuff) sure beats spending $30.

  • So how long will we be waiting for this gift card?

Not sure whether to bite…it is only a $1 I suppose.

    • It says 2 weeks, and the subscription auto-renews in 3 weeks, so …

  • +1

$40 gift card isn't worth giving Murdoch the satisfaction of more subscribers

    • +8

At $1 for a $40 gift card at Rebel, I am happy to swallow my pride and get a few papers to line the budgie cage :)

      • +1

I do that with the local free papers ;) My budgies love eating that.

        • +4

My budgies mainly crap on it.

        • +1

Budgies will eat anything, even if it has there on crap on it, haha.

        • +4

Good to see our feathered friends see the same value in Andrew Bolt as I do.

  • +4

Thanks OP. 15% off at Rebel from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/132657 and then extra $40 off for spending $1 now :)

    • +2

Hoping to get a running top to match my Nike or Puma cap… oh… I almost forgot… they cancelled my order for a Nike cap 2 weeks after I placed the order!

      • I had a win with that one. I purchased 2 hats, received 1 in the mail, and got refunded the full $10 back when they cancelled and refunded my order. Shame it was the hat I got for my girlfriend and not me.

        • Funny, I had the exact same thing happen! Purchased 2 hats the gf's hat arrived, mine was cancelled & got the full $10 back also… weird

  • haha this will get ozbargained soooo quick!

  • +2

Offer only available where regular home delivery exists for VIC residents and where no additional freight is charged.

Is that only for home deliveries?

    • cant you take the first option of full subscription if you are not in VIC? its an online subscription..

  • +3

If you sign up to the Digital plus Sunday delivery now, you'll only get 3 Sunday papers delivered (as it says to allow 5 days for first delivery) before needing to cancel…do it on Monday or Tuesday though, and you'll get 4 delivered….just in case you wanna eke out the most possible :p

    • +1

Very good idea, if the deal is still around tomorrow after thousands of ozbargainer's sign up.

  • Is there a link on cancelling the subscription? I got the $1 one with the Sunday papers.

Edit: Don't worry, found the answer.

    • +1

how did u cancel? where is the link?

      • i believe you have to call or email them to cancel the sub….in the FAQ area

  • +1

wonder how many people will actually keep the subscription? is there a fee for cancelling???

    • No there isn't.

  • Do you think we can cancel the ongoing subscription straight away, and still receive the $40 gift card?

    • I am just going to wait unit the gift card arrives :)

  • So I just subscribed for the $1 for 28 days package. Is there anything else I have to do or do I just wait for delivery of the gift card now?

  • -3

I rang and subscribed. Ended up going with the $10 deal to get a paper delivered everyday. Its a good deal and confirmed the $40 Rebel gift card will come within 14 days.

  • +8

I've signed up for this deal, and for those wondering, here is what I know so far:

    1. You can select any of the 4 subscriptions, which start at $1 - this includes the digital only bundle. You will receive a $40 Rebel Sports gift card

    2. Based on the terms and conditions on the subscribe page - the rebel gift card will be sent out within 14 days, so presumably you could not cancel your subscription before then if you intend to.

    3. You only pay $1 now via credit card or PayPal. Your subscription will renew in approx. 3 weeks. Based on registering today, my renewal is March 23rd and I would be charged $16 based on the plan I selected.

  • It died!!!! but Moots came through with the answer down below, Thanks Moots and thanks google chrome

  • -1

They must have seen OzBargain abusing the system.

    https://myaccount.news.com.au/heraldsun/register?action=newC…

    Page not found

  • damn it i was too slow trying to confirm if it was for the $1 or $10 subs. :(

  • So could someone sum this up for me? I get 3 choices when trying to subscribe. Which do I choose. So the only money I would have to spend is just $1 or $1 week? How many papers will I get and when? Thanks in advance.

    • When I choose my address, for some reason it says it wont ship here. So I chose the $1/week digital only subscription. Then in 3 weeks we cancel the subscription

    • +1

First of all, the link doesn't work anymore. They've clicked on.

Second, any of the $1 subscription works, because your going to cancel when the 3-4 week time comes as that's hopefully when you'd receive the gift card.

You'll receive 3-4 papers if you choose to have the Sunday Paper delivered. Other options are available, but are $10 instead of $1.

With the issue above, they've taken the subscription registration down. It will not suprise me if they are changing the terms and conditions, and may not honor the above.

Although what OzBargainers are doing is perfectly legal, and apart of the terms and condition. We will see.

  • Anyone see a way to cancel the subscription online through "My Account"? Anyway, next billing date is 23rd March so might need a phone call before then.

  • +1

    Still works here,
    try this link

I opened it on a different computer to test, so this is not the case.

    • Worked for me on Opera 12.15

  • Needed a new gym bag so this comes in handy! Thank you.

  • Still OK for me. Just completed my registration. Thanks Op.
