original offer now currently only available via phone as per https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/135207?page=3#comment-1864397

Herald Sun have come to their senses and changed the T&C of the deal, stating you must remain signed up for 12 weeks to receive the $40 gift card.

Original Deal:
UPDATE - CLARIFICATION OF $40 GIFT CARD: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/entertainment/competitions/subsc…
Taken from that page: "All features described below are valid for those who subscribe to any of the four Herald Sun subscription packages on offer, which start from just $1 for the first 28 days.

This offer is open to new subscribers only and ends on March 31.

The offer includes:

$40 REBEL GIFT CARD
You’ll get $40 to spend on whatever you like at Rebel, including AFL team gear, at any Australian store or online at www.rebelsport.com.au "

Deal:
I know Herald Sun has had the $1 for 28 days subscription for a while now, but until 31st March 2014 you can also get a $40 gift card to spend on whatever you like at Rebel in store or online. The gift card is sent to you within 14 days of subscription, giving you plenty of time to cancel. If you dont cancel, it then reverts to $4.00 per week.
You can also get the Sunday paper delivered in the $1 subscription too, but that reverts to $4.50 after the promotional period, which I think is pretty good value anyway

From itsmemeow's comment:
You can select any of the 4 subscriptions, which start at $1 - this includes the digital only bundle. You will receive a $40 Rebel Sports gift card

Based on the terms and conditions on the subscribe page - the rebel gift card will be sent out within 14 days, so presumably you could not cancel your subscription before then if you intend to.

You only pay $1 now via credit card or PayPal. Your subscription will renew in approx. 3 weeks. Based on registering today, my renewal is March 23rd and I would be charged $16 based on the plan I selected.

According to their FAQ's (once registered), their cancellation policy is as follows:

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my subscription?
Your digital access will be cancelled within 5 business days, but home delivery may continue for up to a further 5 business days (those of you in WA should allow up to 10 business days for deliveries to cease).
Oh, and we won’t charge you a cancellation fee.

Terms and Conditions

Renewals occur unless cancelled.
Payment in advance by credit/debit card or Paypal only.
Offer only available where regular home delivery exists for VIC residents and where no additional freight is charged.
Offer available for limited time only.
New subscribers only.
Rebel $40 Gift Card To take up the Rebel Gift Card offer you must subscribe to a News + Digital or Digital Bundle subscription.

for some reason? i think the exploitation of users trying to take advantage of it is a safe bet. but im pretty sure i saw you sign up earlier, will they not renew it in to the offer eligible deal for you???? because your last comments are all over the place and now im confused.

      • on now 2 a much nicer lady who says it is goodish. will keep updated!

        • +3

From the Advertiser: K den, apparently if u signed up online YOU'RE GOOD!!! If u don't get it within 14 days just call them. Asked her "I have friends (Johnno1987, Tdw, Phor8) who signed up, are they all good and dont have to ring up.. "Yeah, they're fine.."
          TL:DR. You're still fine

        • +1

          cheers mate
so they said they arent taking people over phone either anymore?
EDIT: just had my friend call up to apply for it, no luck they dont do it anymore.

        • +1

Well, thats debatable. I would say no, but you can always try!

        • +1

          "I have friends (Johnno1987, Tdw, Phor8)

i was so overwhelmed with joy reading that i accidentally banged my knee on the table happy tears

Your house must be filled with saliva with all my posts in here

        • swimmin' in it B-)

  • I signed up yesterday with the $1 digital only, is that all I had to do?

    • +3

lame…. if the ones who originally bought this now have to stay subscribed for 12 weeks then this is frustrating and a waste of a dollar…

      • +2

They better keep to the terms on the original T&C for those who signed up with those terms or else all hell will break loose with all the places one could complain.

        • hehe yer if they dont keep to their word, they will only make more hassels with so many callers. I wonder how they will react

    • +1

That is changing the T&C's on us. We can easily cancel paypal payments
Maybe that is for suscribers who sign up Now - future

    • +1

The fact that says "select new subscribers" makes it sound like they can just say no to anyone as well. It better not apply to people who signed up prior to today…

    • +4

Good thing I took some Screen caps before they changed it thought they might come in handy.
      http://imgur.com/a/iwgNf#0

    • PerthNow website seems to have no mention of the $40 card at all now…

      Power of OzBargain? ;)

  • +2

Well, that wasn't there before and if true, incoming mass cancellation.

"Rebel $40 Gift Card To take up the Rebel Gift Card offer you must subscribe to a select news+ Digital or Digital Bundle subscription. If you are eligible by remaining a subscriber for 12 weeks, the Rebel Gift Card will be sent to you within 14 days after 12 weeks from when you purchased your valid subscription

….and limited to one per household. Only available if you remain a subscriber for 12 weeks"

  • Typical Newscorp. They either didn't think (lol) about the obvious loopholes in their offer, or just as likely they thought their readers wouldn't be smart enough to work it out.

    • +4

To be fair, they were aiming at the right demographic.

  • If you are eligible by remaining a subscriber for 12 weeks, the Rebel Gift Card will be sent to you within 14 days after 12 weeks from when you purchased your valid subscription

    Wasted my dollar

  • +9

if i don't get my gift card before the last date for subscription cancellations, i'd be inclined to open a Paypal dispute or file a chargeback with my bank on the basis that they changed the terms and conditions during the offer.

some of you may say that's a lot of work for $1 but given this is news ltd we're dealing with, i reckon it's worth it to send them a message that this shit isn't acceptable

    • I think the t&c for a dispute is that the item has to be posted to you. Will stand corrected though

      • +1

buyer protection may not extend to digital products but the advertised gift card is a physical thing. worth arguing that point; even if i lose the paypal dispute, i still have the chargeback option.

i had a feeling when i coughed up my $1 that there might be difficulties with this promo which is why i paid by CC through paypal.

  • +10

So if any one wants to use it, here is a screenshot of the actual sign-up page before it was updated including the terms and conditions.

    Enjoy :)

    • Does anyone have a similar screenshot for Courier Mail?

      • Sorry not I

      • first page, one of my comments

  • Hey guys I managed to sign up on the Herald Sun website last night during the time that everything was down. Does this mean I'm under the old terms and conditions? Should I call them and check whether my registration has been confirmed to get a gift card?

    • probably. only they will know.

    • Call

    • +5

I signed up when the deal first popped up on OzBargain, so definitely more than 24 hours ago and before they changed the T&C's.

I called the Herald Sun Customer Service today and asked if I was eligible for the Rebel gift card, the woman asked when I signed up, I said more than 24 hours ago, and then she said I should have it posted to my home address in SA within 14 days. Guess i'll have to wait n see.

I signed up to The Advertiser Digital + Sunday Mail package as well about 15 minutes after the Herald Sun Digital Only subscription, so i'll be curious to see whether they send me a card for that one as well… I put it in my partner's name, but paid for it with my CC.

I'll be happy if I just get one gift card and hopefully a couple of Sunday Mail papers out of the $2 i've invested!

      • Cheers for the info!

You didn't receive a confirmation e-mail about the giftcard either? Good to know I'm still probably eligible :)

        • +1

Nope, only the 2 emails regarding my subscription. There was no mention of the REBEL Card in either of them nor is there any mention of the gift card under My Account when I log in, so that's why I called them to find out.

I think they'll probably honour those that signed up online before they pulled the site down and changed the terms and conditions.

I guess we'll all find out in 14 days!

  • For those who signed up or subsciption starts on March 1, would you mind to remind others to cancel on March 18?

    Thanks

  • Hi everyone, I have updated the deal with the T&C and Offer page as at 01/03/2014. Had a feeling they may change the T&C, so took a couple of shots. Hopefully it helps us get our cards.

  • +6

OK, let's hope for the best. Everyone, please let us know in this thread if and when you receive a gift card.

If they don't deliver, by all means do your Paypal dispute / chargeback. But even more important: make a complaint to the ACCC for misleading advertising. The ACCC has real power and it works! For example: Scoopon recently was taken to court and fined $1 million. All it took were a few hundred complaints - we have the numbers right here on this thread!

    • +1

That's right we all need to stand together should they not fulfill the terms they set out.
In that line of thought heres a link to a comment with each states Fairtrading websites and the ACCC site.

    • +12

They may take our dollar, but they will never take our freedom to complain and nag. You can count on my steel.

  • +13

I don't want or need a Rebel Sport gift card, but if I don't get mine I'll unleash all hell on News Ltd.

Screenshot of the email I received, in case no one believes me :P

    • I didn't get this email :(

Should've signed up on the PerthNow site. Oh well. I'm gonna be cancelling right before the renewal anyhow.

    • Hi David, big brother is watching you. ;P

  • +1

LOL, someone at News Corp. has recently found out about a website called ozbargain.com.au, and that person is about to have their a55 kicked !

  • How many chargebacks does it take to get an account suspended… hahaha.

If they don't follow through then we may just get the answer.

    • I've got 30 accounts so Ill sure contribute my fair share :D. Time to give Murdoch a hiding, you can't change t n cs after the transaction took place.

  • I demand lifetime delivery as compensation.

  • I put an enquirery in on sat afternoon for when will I receive my g/c.
The email just says 14 days as we know, nothing about "12 month subscription or anything else"

    • -1

      you should said
"i have applied for $1 one, and im intend to cancel once i get the g/c, on in a month time. when i will receive my g/c?"

    • +1

Well, since I didn't get the confirmation email that i'd definitely be getting the card, and calling The Herald's Customer Service only gave me a "you should have the card posted to you within 14 days", I contacted both The Herald and The Advertiser from their contact forms yesterday morning, but yet to receive a reply.

I'm guessing they've got a tonne of subscriptions, emails and whatnot to deal with.

Please keep us posted if anyone gets their card or finds out more info.

      Cheers!

  • What happens if my payment fails on my subscription?

If your payment fails, we'll shoot you an email and ask you to update your details. Your subscription requires payment approximately 5 days prior to the commencement of each billing period, so you should have plenty of time to make the updates.

We'll keep trying, but if we don't hear from you after a while, we'll simply cancel your subscription.
    .
Does this affect the date we all need to remind each other on?

    • +1

if someone paid with paypal and cancelled the subscription there, then probably don't need to bother contacting them.

but personally i'm going to cancel it by contacting them as well. have to be sure to be sure ;)

      • +3

Let's just hope it all comes through for us.

  • +2

i just donated $1 to murdoch??? whaaaaatttttttttt

    • +1

If only you could go back in time and moonwalk away from this deal

  • I called up HS and was told that I wasn't on the mailing list yet for the rebel vouchers. I entered into a subscription in one hour after this Ozbargain post went live.

Starting to think I'll get charged for the next billing period before I get my voucher.

    • Starting to think the same thing myself, will see.

  • +1

classic bait and switch.. 9 days Murdoch, cough up or suffer the consequences

Signed up thru Adelaide? I got told we'll still get it..

        • +8

Depends who you talk to. And yeah, I signed up through the Adelaide link. The email reply wasn't very encouraging.

I called them just before close of business today and spoke with "Tom". He said anyone that signed up on or before March 2nd is on the mailing list and will get their Rebel gift cards within 14 days.

He was actually really honest about it. He said they took the website down on the 3rd to change the terms and conditions, but anyone that applied before that happened should get their cards. If I don't receive mine within 14 days he said to call back and ask for him.

Now, that's what I call customer service!

        • Nice guy Tom aye?
          Thanks for that Graffin

      • +6

I just got off the phone with them. It appears that anyone that signed up on the 1st of March will get their Gift Card as mentioned in the Original T&C. So all looks good.

        • +1

thanks - how about 2nd march?

        • Good one knackers (…).

        • +7

if you need to call them use the 1800 680 640 number to save 30-35c

  • +1

Yes I got the confirmation email of my subscription dated 2/3 0019 hrs. Hope that doesn't mean I missed out by 19 mins… -_o

    • Yeah, I was 2 March 2014 1.37am. :-)

      • you snooze you lose!

  • Hi all - got a response to my query:

    Thankyou for your recent contact.

You have applied for the News+ Full Access Promotion.

You should have your voucher within 2 weeks of your subscription dated 1 march 2014.

Please respond if this does not occur.

    Kind Regards,

    Viv

  • We don't need a crystal ball to figure out that Rebel will jack up their prices within the coming weeks

    • +4

I'm guessing the gift cards have a 12 month expiry so I doubt Rebel will do anything

      Prices are already high anyway

  • So I decided to call them today to ask whether I'm gonna get my gift card. I managed to sign up just before or during the downtime of changing the terms of conditions. They told me they're gonna call me back lol but I'll probably call them again tomorrow. What are people going to do if they don't get the gift card?

    • +2

What are people going to do if they don't get the gift card?

write them an angry letter telling them how angry i am ;)

      • +1

Then place it in an envelope sealed with an ever so slight mixture of dog turd.

        • your thinking i like, Mr President

  • +3

I got in before the outage too. At the very least we should all do chargebacks if we don't get the rebel gift card.

But then again, we all get weekend delivery of toilet paper for a month for $1.

    • ArseBargain \o/

but i even miss out on that because WA/digital-only bundle. thanks Barnett.

      • User error? I signed up to digital plus Sunday Times for a month for $1…

        • several years ago i used to buy the sunday times….never again! not even for $1

        • +1

If I walked in the door, it'll be all soggy anyway tdw

        • Well could just consider it as the digital only part is $1 and the paper is free? Chuck it on your neighbours lawn?

        • my neighbours have a "no newspapers or circulars. thank you!" sign on their letterbox…don't want to start a war over a discarded sunday rag :D

leave it for people that actually want it

    • +2

I actually do use newspaper to assist with my cat litter. Very useful absorbent.

  • +9

If we don't get the cards, here's the link for your complaint:
    https://www.accc.gov.au/contact-us/contact-the-accc/consumer…

The key word to use is: "False or Misleading Advertising"
    http://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/misleading-claims-advertisi…

Don't bother with any local fair trade or consumer affairs office, they don't have teeth. This was a nationwide marketing campaign, it might as well be reviewed at the national level.

    • +1

I'm sure it's gonna be a non-issue and anyone that signed up before T's & Cs changed will get it

      • +1

Lets hope n pray its the case
