Optus Prepaid MyTab Back by Popular Demand - $99!!!!

2110

Just received an SMS from Optus saying mytabs can be ordered online.

Offer is valid till 15th of July

http://www.optus.com.au/mytaborders

http://www.optus.com.au/store/phone/mytab_prepaid_orders?sid…

Mod: Just got an email from Optus' Social Media Team, basically

  • It is no longer in stock, and they do not offer it as a prepaid device anymore.
  • It is only available as a post-paid product. See this Optus tablet plans.
  • Please remove this deal as soon as possible.

Well I won't remove this post, but it's now marked as expired. Moreover, DO NOT call Optus to ask about this prepaid product (apparently their call centre is overloaded by OzBargainers).

Mod (9/7): Appears to be back in stock. Reopened until further advice.
Mod (11/7): Out of stock again.

  • Get in quick- it's well worth it!

  • Worth it!!$99!!

  • The site is a bit slow though….

Took a while to get to the initial page…

You can purchase up to 4 units under one name.

"Put this on my tab please."

    • +4

      dunno why your getting negs……lol

  • Where is the best deal for a SIM with data after the 3 months expire?

    • easily the $80 recharge lasting 6 months :)

  • +4

One of the best things I have bought for under $100. If you haven't gotten it by now, get it before they run out.

  • Are these available in store?

  • +1

    Is the screen capacitive?

    • +2

      resistive

    • +1

      No.
      Resistive.

  • Thanks bozter. Just got one!! :D

  • +2

Resistive screen ca6leguy. So, no multitouch.
I've got one, and it's great for the money.

I've just ordered another one for my daughter to destroy/play with.

  • +2

    From the T&Cs
Usage: is counted in 10MB increments and includes both uploads and downloads. First 30MB per day charged at 10MB.

  • I know nothing at all about these, so if this question is daft I apologise in advance. Can they be unlocked, and I don't mean by optus. Are they wi-fi or do they take a sim card. Again I apologise for my daftness.

    • Yes, yes and yes

Do a search, there's LOTS of postings here on it, and what you can do with it, hacks, etc.

      • thanks. does it compare to the ipad?

        • +5

          better :)

        • +3

i don't think u should really compare this with the ipad coz they're in completely different classes (ones like $600 while the others $99)

        • +1

one more question, which is better the telstra one or the optus one?

        • +1

badly.. but I still bought one when they came down to $149 and love it.. it is NOT an iPad and is not suppose to be…

It does however browse the web, facebook, gmail, etc via 3G and wifi… is a great eReader as well using any free ereader app.. I am thinking of getting a second at this price, just to get another 3 months access and have a secodn unit for the kids to fight over instead of using mine!

        • Honestly.. it is not an iPad or a Galaxy Tab. For the CPU included in Optus MyTab, it is suprisingly fast (but the CPU/GPU is still weak). However, gaming is a bit disappointing. The included Raging Thunder is good, and Ashalt 5 apprently works. Other than that, I am not able to get any other Gameloft HD games to work. Plants vs Zombies also does NOT work on this (dunno why). Some of the more 3d heavy games also don't work.

The resisitive touch screen is not too bad BUT lack of multi-touch means you cannot press right and an action button at the same time. Has the usual not much internal storage issue with low end Android devices.

The good thing is a lot of apps. do work on this. The price and the included 3G data makes it very attractive.

        • Don't forget you can still use it as a GPS too so image 7" GPS with that price, but you need an internet connection(but can use personal hot spot for that)

        • offline GPS apps should work on this device (e.g. CoPilot).

        • Guys, I have a question, if I were to use this for GPS, when my 3 months internet data ran out, I have to keep buying data to be able to use the GPS, am I right ? Sorry for the noob question, but I'm really lost and bad with technology lol

        • +1

This does not compare to the iPad or modern Honeycomb tablet. It's unfortunate that early on, these manufacturers attempted to market them as iPad alternatives to people who don't know the difference. But remember, you're comparing a $600+ device with a $100 one, just know what you'll be using it for.

        • If you get a copy of CoPilot or Sygic or Navigon (assuming they all work on Optus MyTab), then you don't need 3G.

However, if you want to use the free Google Navigation, then yes, you need 3G. One main difference between Android and iOS device is that with Android you get free Google Navigation (but it uses 3G data). The amount of data used by Google Navigation is very little. However, in terms of routing, Google Navigation is still not the best. But, it is integrated to Google map (and your contact etc…).

as per the video review, this device can;t play youtube ? :S

        • it should be able to

        • It can play youTube movies, quite well actually.

  • Purchased, thank you ;)

  • Got 1! Thanks!

  • +2

wow that optus checkout process is probably the worst online checkout ive come across, it couldnt confirm my address so i just cancelled the whole thing.

    • +1

You need to verify it. Then confirm it

  • I lost all hope after missing out on the Big W and the DSE $99 deal. But thanks to you I got one in the end :D

  • Here's a very good video review for those who are unsure about it .. back when this review was made it ratailed for $269 so keep that in mind !! at $99 its almost a giveaway for what you get
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsGkcvqw3q0

  • Anyone done a youtube review of it with the latest android or otherwise rooted to remove any bloat? Still tossing up over this one?
Anyone give this to their kids? Does it stand up to a little rough play?

    • +2

My kids use it and the 2 yo is not overly gentle… having said that I think the screen is getting a little less reponsive already (had 3 months).. my kids love playing the games and they are of course bigger than they are on the 3" - 4" phones we have. For the price I was thinking about getting another so they can each have one instead of fighting over mine. If they dropped it, like most plastic things I think it would come off worse for wear.

  • -6

Love the newbie questions - why not click the link and read the specs.
    Lazyness is a curse
Mytab is awesome - get one!

  • +1

Nice thanks. This should be good to read mangas?

    Estimated Delivery Date: 14/07/2011

    • lol, i ordered like an hr ago and the estimated delivery date was 12/07/2011

      • where did you check the estimated delivery date?

        • it should be on the same page as your order number after completing your checkout halfway on the page

    • it will be fine to do anything on… :) for $99 u cant go wrong its a great media player for on the go!

    • yep
just go to the website(onemanga, manga~~~)
or put it on the tab ebook

      • or use the mango manga reader. Lets you download multiple chapters so you can read offline as well!

  • Anyone know what model ZTE device it is? Thanks.

    • V9

    • Sometime also known as ZTE Light

These just reminded me of another tablet I was looking at the other day, which has a dual core processor and 1080p playback :O

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48506

    • +2

Double the price and no 3G built in. Whats the point of 1080p playback on a 800 x 480 screen.

      • HDMI out w. Full HD,

Did you read the specs? They're pretty impressive IMO for $215

  • Whats the deal with the ID? Drivers license or PIN password?
PIN for what? I selected a pin, then it says later whatever ID I have selected will be required to accept delivery?

Ah well, guess will see. Placed order with PIN, later says credit card and photo ID will need to be shown.
12/7 estimated delivery date, I'm in WA.

  • Just ordered one. Estimated delivery date is 12/7. The delivery note says the recipient needs to show the credit card used to purchase and a photo ID. Pretty annoyed as I might not be at home when it's delivered.

Any one got experience with delivery of the tab from Optus? Will the courier (Australia Post?) transfer it to the local post office if you could not attend when it arrived?

    Edit: beaten by bamzero

    • +1

      Yep! From the confirmation email:
"If you are not home for the delivery then you will have a delivery card placed at your home where you can pick up your delivery from the post office".

      • +2

i confirm they want to see the license of the purchaser, would recommend a photocopy if they are not available it worked for me.

  • Hmm… I see these advertised but I'm not sure I quite 'get it' just yet…

What do you all do with these things?

Are they used like a big ipod… or a small laptop… where do you use them and what do you use them for??

    • +2

what do you use your computer/laptop for? if you're just using 1/2 windows and playing flash type games - then I think this thing is the typical use. Then again because its android, it can be further customized to do what you want.

      GPS
      Media player
      Remote
      Games
      Internet browsing

In a small package, and now at a cost that is cheaper than any phone/ipod/laptop

    • +5

I use my tablet (Galaxy Tab) for quick browsing, watching movies, youtube and reading (but inferior to Kindle). It's not really great for productivity but Google Docs somewhat makes up for that. You can play some games, but remember this one is Resistive screen.

At this price, you can't go wrong. Last case scenario, you can just use it as a digital photo frame.

    • How interesting, thanks!

  • This is great and unexpected. I missed out on earlier one as was overseas. Tried dicksmith, austpost and was sold out everywhere. Thanks a lot. Can't go wrong for $99.

  • Estimated Delivery Date: 12/07/2011

    Thanks OP :-)

  • I bought it just because it runs on Android… now what do I use it for?

  • thanks for the share, I was looking to get a kindle or something for reading ebooks, but I reckon this will be a much better alternative for the price, even if its battery doesn't last days, I couldn't imagine it being less than a full day if all you're doing is reading with it compared to video playback and the like.

Have people been successful installing a vanilla android on these devices? With all the functions still working properly of course. Nothing peeves me more than bloatware just sluggin the performance unnecessary

    • If you wanted just to read books, you probably should have gone with the Kindle. At $115 USD now, you can't go wrong, and it feels much better on your eyes and fingers than using a tablet.

      • +1

        the battery is quite good
whole day of angry birds and the battery still was going strong

      • wow 115 now? lol my mate told me he bought his about a month ago for 400. in that case I might go with the kindle. I mean, it's nice to have Google maps and all that jazz, I've heard you can browse some sites and some email on the kindle though.

thanks for letting me know tho

        • think of the kindle as only an ebook reader, the internet sucks bad on it.

        • $139 for the Wi-Fi model and $114 for the ad-supported model. But the ads only pop up as screensaver, it does not affect your reading at all. I have the Wi-Fi version but picked up my friend the ad-supported one and it's unnoticeable, I'd have saved the $25 if I knew about it earlier.

          http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Special-Offers-Wireless-Reader/…

    • There is an vanilla version of Froyo 2.2 available on the manufacturer site. It works perfectly without any problem.

      • cool thanks mate http://zte.com.au/optus/V9.htm thats the link, it says its a MyTab update to 2.2 though… so might still be full of the optus crap. What was the one you were looking at?

        • +3

The official update is still full of the Optus bloatware. I have rooted and updated to the 2.3.4 update. Takes it back to stock Andriod, runs soooooo much quicker, screen more responsive etc etc. Read the attached whirlpool thread to get detailed info on rooting and flashing a new rom. It is very easy to follow the guide listed on this site. I have updated two tabs, both work a treat.
          http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/zte_tablet_v9_optus

        • +1

Oops. Think I mentioned the wrong thing here. It should be a plain Froyo on an oversea dealer website for the same machine which have no bloatwares at all.

          http://www.camdenville.com/chin/zte-os-upgrade.html

      • So this can go straight over the top of either the optus 2.1 or 2.2 roms?

Then once the vanilla is installed, could continue to install CM7 if we wish?

  • +15

    Damn you Ozbargain!

I managed to resist this thing until now : (

How am I going to explain this to the missus…hey I know…

Me: "Hey wife…scored $50 worth of games (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48492) and a tablet pc for $99 today!'

Wife: "OMG you are the best bargain hunting husband ever! Here is a cold beer for your efforts!"

    :D

    • +2

Lucky my wife is a fellow OzBargainer…so I don't have that problem :)

  • RAGE

Their stupid effing site will not accept my HSBC Visa Credit Card.
HSBC cant help, effing Optus drones cant take payment over the phone.

I'll probably miss out on this because of that.
    RAGE

    • Took me 2 credit cards, 2 pc's and 3 browsers!

      • +1

Took me 1 credit card, 1 pc and 1 browser :)

        • Same with me:)

    • I'm having the same problem, getting a validation error, CBA say my card is fine, but the stupid checkout system keeps saying I have a validation error.

    • Sorry to hear. My amex worked from the first try.I'm with CBA too.

      • Kept asking me to select my credit card type although it was done, but eventually worked.

  • can you play youtube videos on this ? not sure since it cant play flash :S

    • yes it can play youtube on this

    • yeh, the youtube app can be used, but not in the web browser.

    • yeah it plays the mp4 version via the youtube app or mobile youtube website.

  • +2

Alright OzB, you just made me buy something I didn't need. Now you're going to have to explain to my kid why he will be getting a $5 hat instead of lego for his birthday.

    • Why not give him a MyTab instead? :)

    • +1

you know what you should do

download a lego app(not for if there is one of not) for him to play on the mytab

  • HWODVHV WONT ACCEPT MY CARD NOT HAPPY GGGRIQH0SCP!!!!!!

  • I just got a call from Optus need to confirm my personal details, anyone?

    • Yea. They just called me from a private number. It's weird because it's out of office hours. They asked me DOB, current address and previous address. Then they decided the only to put through my order is that I have to fax my ID to them (1800 248 800).

  • Install cm7 ginger bread, Launcher Pro Plus and overclock the CPU and you have a GREAT device.

    • so glad I got rid of all of the bloatware. No more low storage messages!

  • Sweet find! been getting annoyed, with DSE, optus, auspost, HNs…

    finally got one!!! good stuff

  • So are there unlocked? If not what do you have to do to get them unlocked?

    • It was locked to Optus network, but there are some website that can generate the unlock key, all you need is the device imei number, gsm card beside optus and virgin an an internet to that website and it can be done less than a minute
