Good price, I feel bad for those users that paid $1200 for one. Plenty of people trying to sell these used for more than this. :)

    • +13

The people who paid full price for this excellent phone received loads of freebies that brought the price down to under $700, including, continuum dock, 1 year office 356, either a xbox one or a 200GB SD card and other bonuses. So don't feel bad we were rewarded from day 1 with an awesome phone and arguably best camera available in a phone.

      • +8

I dont feel bad i feel sorry.

        • We can feel sorry for different things, hope your ok

        • @Impecunious: small handful of reasons why i have to have a windows desktop at my house. If not for them it would be a linux property from mobile through to desktop.

        • @Hotkolbas: Yes because we are ok based on what phone and computer we have as opposed how we treat other people.

        • Edited.

The people who paid full price for this excellent phone received loads of freebies that brought the price down to under $700

No, they paid $1200 in exchange for a phone and some apparently very overpriced accessories.

        LOL.

        • +6

No, they paid $1200 in exchange for a phone and some apparently very overpriced accessories.

          LOL.

Take your trolling elsewhere. Obviously the phone/OS mean nothing to you so go back to whatever iOS/Android fan forum you got lost from.

Others (myself included) have gotten this phone and the deal mentioned above, and I've had nothing but positive experiences with the phone and platform.

If you love your iOS/Android device so much, then so be it. Or are you having buyer's remorse or is your device bending or exploding while charging?

        • +1

Its silly to LOL over something you know nothing about, SD cards and Continuum are valuable accessories, office 365 for PC, phone and tablet is highly productive, 2 free Audible books are valuable, $25 VISA gift card is $25. Sheesh

        • +5

@Impecunious: Doesnt add up to $700 worth of differences between the initial price of $1199 and $499 now.

          Continuum Dock: $99 (from HN)
          200GB MicroSD: ~$120
          Office 365 1 user 1 year: $60
          2 free audible books: $20
          $25 Visa Gift card: $25

          Total: $324

        • +3

          @bchliu:
At the time of purchase it brought the price down to under $700.
Free SD card from HN (online price was about $150 at the time), free display dock – $150 at the time (only recently down to $98 at HN); Free 1yr office 365 $89 +$25 gift card = $414 total, which brings the original price down to about $680 from $1100, not counting the free Audible books.

        • +4

          @bchliu:

          1) Impecunious never said $700 worth of difference, what was said was…

received loads of freebies that brought the price down to under $700

If you're going to quote someone, at least get it right.

          2) Since the freebies were at launch, you should probably use launch prices (RRP)
          - Continuum was $150
          - Some people got an Xbox One as part of the Optus deal, ~$399 retail price at the time. Personally I sold mine for $350 so pick either number.
          - Office 365 $89 Source
          - Gift Card $25

Total $614 (using 350 rather than 399 for Xbox One).

Makes a big difference if you ask me.

        • +1

@IceCreamBandit: Never said Impecunious said $700 worth of difference. The difference is the release price $1199 to the current price of $499 ($700).

I am not sure that freebies should be taken as RRP price. RRP prices are ridiculous anyway that most people at least on OzB do not pay unless they really had to. Freebies, unlike money/cash is something they throw in as a bonus. Not a discount, not cash. What if you already had the SD card and needed no more? Or the Xbox one (which, was limited to 300 units only in the Optus offer)? Selling it back onto Ebay will not fetch you anywhere near the RRP to be "worth" that particular value. O365 was selling at the time for around $60 on discounts as well.

        • +2

          @bchliu:

That's a lot of hypothetical questions, which would have been considered when people bought the phone either outright or on contract. RRP or not, the freebies/inclusions were included which made it enticing for people back at launch.

I'm just lost with your $700 difference comment and your calculations…what actually was the point of it?

Impecunious listed the freebies in their comment to talk about the good deal available at launch, in reply to the ignorant and uninformed comment above. It wasn't meant to say the launch price/deal is better than the current deal.

        • +1

          @bchliu:
So you saying people should wait almost 12 months to save a couple of hundred buck> No way, I have been enjoying its value all this time, well worth it. You could save a couple of hundred on any worthwhile phone after 12 months. No thought of seeling something so valuable. Using the camera alone for almost 12 months has made it incredible value.

        • @IceCreamBandit: Not a lot of hypothetical, just a lot of subjective stuff here about what is considered "Value". My point of it was that the "Value" you and Impecunious were referring to was literally value only in your eyes as being an early adopter whilst if you calculated it based on hard numbers, well.. MS was probably a bit wrong to ask $1200 off everyone for this phone (I laugh at HP's asking price).

For me, the value that MS could have bought onboard if they were really truly keen on getting a customer base was not to throw out inflated hardware, but also to help the user settle into a new ecosystem by giving a certain amount of Windows store credit and assistance to find the right apps to install. Granted, they have created some tools to help but its as buggy as hell and crashes on a number of phones.

Everyone's "Value" statement is different here. I am just stating another perspective and opinion, that's all.

        • @Impecunious: Not at all. Just saying that MS's original asking price was probably $400 more than what they should have asked for. Hence why when they did a cut, it comes down crashing because they have an over-inventory of these devices because.. they werent selling for $1200 no matter how many token freebies they throw into the deal.
As far as Value is concerned - I am probably not helping either side here and as I was saying above, it is very much a subjective statement to make. There are tangible and intangible value statements here and literally you have received a lot of intangible benefits as a result of it all for you to register that the phone is of "Value" enough to generate the $1200 asking price.

@IceCreamBandit: well what about symbian users? Dont knock us.

S5 user here no bending or explosing But a hell of a lotta apps to choose from.

        • @Hotkolbas: Actually all phones can explode. Basic Alkali Chemistry here. 4Li + O2 → 2Li2O + exothermic reaction (ie. Energy in the form of a violent explosion). I love my Symbians.. especially my N95. I bet I had more apps on Symbian than a Winpho user..

        • -1

@IceCreamBandit: I used Windows Phone 7/8 for 4 years and I'd never pay $1200 for a new Windows Phone no matter a) how much I like the OS, and b) how many accessories they throw in. Even at this price I'm struggling to justify jumping back to WP but I'll admit I'm a bit tempted.
Don't get so defensive over it.

        • -2

@IceCreamBandit: How about you get a grip on reality and accept that they paid $1200 in cash instead of this knee jerk reaction.

        • @Impecunious: Paid $1200.

        • +2

          @Diji1:

Who paid $1200? You've done nothing but sh*t on this deal/phone/OS in this thread. How about doing something useful?

        • @Diji1: No HN was $1129 and $1104 with a $25 newsletter discount. Some one paying $499 now will have to pay another $300+ to get the great and needed add-on that I received, plus had to wait nearly 12 months.

        • -1

@IceCreamBandit: I'm sorry did you read the first two comments of this thread?

    Very good price.

    • +4

It is.. but got it a tad better on MS site directly. $499 with the Cashrewards voucher of 8% storewide ($40 off). Another 3% back from Cashrewards itself $12 or something and MS gave me back $20 discount because i enquired about the screenbeam that was out of stock with the original offer. So got it for about $430 delivered. hehe

      • +2

        awesome price!

  • +5

such a good phone, I was given one as a work phone and I am getting 3-4 days of battery life

    • +1

Good to know. I have a work phone 640XL and I was getting 2-3 days initially…a year later now I am getting 1 day max. maybe the battery deteriorated.

      • Maybe in a year or two it might have the same battery issue but at the moment I am spending 2-3 hours on the phone. The only downside of the phone is that there is no Youtube or Google or any other Google applications but is a work phone so even if there were those applications for it I wouldn't add them to the phone.

        • +6

I use metrotube. not a bad app.

        • +2

Out of curiosity which apps are you looking for? I was only looking for access to my Google photos, instagrm, maps and youtube. All available via 3rd party windows apps. (Guess that's all I want really 😀)

        • +1

@harkoliar: On my phone, I have flickr central for my photos. The default Microsoft maps is sufficient and useful enough for me. I often use it as the GPS if I am off to an area not familiar with. Works well.

Some of the apps I use on the Android is missing or lack features on the winphone such as the windows phone is missing the Realestate.com.au app and reiwa app, and the domain app that is on winphone is also poor. Evernote on winphone is poor by comparison to Android.

But the Microsoft apps are all pretty good. I can use RDP to connect to my office's desktop on the phone…not that I use this all the time but handy if I need to check something that is important when I am out of the office. Outlook integration is also good.

And of course, the ozbargain app on winphone is too basic.

        • @jeeg:
Agree with you there. I have some camera WiFi apps only available on my android.

And esfile explorer i definitely miss that app on windows phone.

        • +2

@harkoliar: Yeah.. All at a steep price of 5 bucks each if you do not want banner ads. Compared to costing nothing on the equivalent Android or iOS platforms.

I bought this phone from the previous deal and really, the lack of apps kills it. Look at it this way:

          1) No proper 3rd party browsers (Chrome & Firefox)
          2) No Ad-Blocking (MS has banned all of these software)
          3) Apps you took for granted on the other platforms are now.. paid on Windows asking between $2-$20 each.
          4) Cannot even play media files off SMB network at home after the anniversary update
          5) Bunch of stuff is still in "Beta" - even MS stuff like Skype
          6) Continuum is still buggy as hell and does the recent cast to PC is very flaky.

        • +1

          @bchliu:

Actually agree with you there. Especially the banner ads..

        • Maybe no official google apps, but a few third party ones exist. Client for hangouts, client for google photos, client for google music, and maps app discovery uses google maps api. Mytube is a great YouTube app.

        • -1

@Ronnnie: As I said above.. the free versions of these apps are inlaid with massive banners of advertising that can often get in the way of the app to function. Or pay $5 for each app to go without ad's is not cheap.
Puts a few things into perspective - about how you overlook at some of the value that Google actually gives away as part of their packages.

        • @bchliu: UC Browser is a stunning WP browser. Incredibly versatile.

        • +2

Windows Phone's "Office Lens" app is incredible. Most useful app I've used on any platform.

    • How often do you use it? I seem to be getting only a days use of it. I'm on all the time though.

      • +1

I do desktop support so I make 10-15 calls a day and check emails when I am not at my desk. I charged it on Friday and I have just checked it and it says I have 2 days and 21 hours left of the battery. ( I only checked the phone once on the weekend )

  • These are much better deals than those Apple and Xiaomi phones.

    • -2

Pity most people only look at the apps.

      • +16

If your smart phone doesn't have apps you might as well use a Nokia E63. All you're doing is text, Whatsapp, Facebook and email anyway.

        • +4

My Work only provides Lumias, good solid workhorses that have the benefit of not having millions of useless apps to screw it up.

My personal phone is a Nexus and I've got 43 apps, the majority of the other apps on the store are not relevant to me.

        • most applications can be accessed via browsers …. developers usually make a browser based cloud app and then a dedicated app to try and speed things up for mobile devices ….. i prefer via browser eg the age via browser you get more content than via their app.
same with ebay …. prefer to access via browser than the ebay app.

        • @garage sale: >most applications can be accessed via browsers

Which is awful on a smartphone.

Also "most apps" cannot be replaced with a web page because most apps are not serving web content.

        • @stemcell: actually most of the apps installed on my g4 (an android phone) are rarely used.

        • @stemcell: Fallacy to think this way that "millions of useless apps" as even though there are possible 20 different apps that do roughly the same thing, these actually drive competition with each other to generate more innovation and lower the price for the consumer. Its pretty stupid to have to pay equivalent apps that are 50% more expensive than any other platform as such. This is free market success as opposed to closed monopolies that hinder growth.

        • +1

@garage sale: You are missing the point of a dedicated app as opposed to accessing it from a browser. Dedicated apps give direct instant access instead of picking at the keyboard to enter details of the site and logins every time you try use it. It is more about convenience than it is say, usability.
This type of access is literally another excuse for a lack of app support.

        • @Diji1:

It also doesn't help that the Edge browser isn't very good.

One good thing windows phone does do in regards to websites, it allows you to pin a shortcut to the home screen so there's no need to type out web addresses.

I agree apps in general are way better, because they perform better and make better use of small screens.

        • if i accees the age from their app, it knows that i'm on a mobile devices and limits my content unless i subscribe ….. i can read more of the age for free from a browser .(IE) ….. might be that from the browser i could be at a pc at work or home and probabaly wouldn't subscribe on a device that isn't my own at work .. phone is a personal device so i'm more likely to subscribe.

        • You completely misunderstood my comment. I was saying in response to PW's comment above regarding Apple and Xiaomi devices with 'better' deals.

        • @garage sale: The only way to read more of the content from The Age or SMH is with incognito / private mode that does not store cookies. Of course, it will not work on the app versions in these instances. But for everything else.. App versions do a much better job for easy instance access.

      • +1

You mean the 98.9% (~344 million) of people that chose android or iOS in Q2 this year? They must be idiots.

Windows has 0.6 percent of mobile market share. And for good reason. Money better spent elsewhere.

        • -3

I don't like numbers games with statistics.
Lets try it a different way.
99.987 % of people choose cars other than Ferraris. They must be idiots.

Of the 60 million vehicles sold worldwide in 2014, approx. 8000 were Ferrari.

Ferrari have 0.013 percent of the global vehicle market share. And for good reason.

        • +1

          @bigjezza:

That's not even the same though. Comparing Windows 10 Mobile to Android and iOS is very relevant due to how all the phones serve a common purpose and all fall under very similar price brackets.

At the end of the day the fact that Windows had such tiny market share is indicative of how good it is as a platform and moreover, how many companies are going to build apps for that platform. Not to mention when the Lumia 950 was released it was a shitfest of bugs. We all love us some forced Microsoft updates as well don't we, with the anniversary update on Windows 10 and the ability to never turn off Cortana.

Windows 10 is not a good mobile platform when you compare it to the competition. The guy above that said that these Windows phones are better than the Xiaomi Mi5 was born with a pair of extra chromosomes.

        • +5

@bigjezza: ??? Compare apples with apples mate. Ferraris dont operate on volume, they make niche luxury cars with high profit margins per unit.

For all intents and purposes a windows, android, iOS phones do the same thing and operate in all the same price ranges (budget, mid, flagship). Yet millions of people choose android and iOS consistently, with sales of Windows phone users declining year upon year and subsequent job losses, change in management.etc There's no numbers game here. They have a bad product offering and the market has responded. Its a fact.

Windows phone wouldve been dead if not for Microsoft propping it up to make use of the patents that they get royalties from (iOS and android), and hoping that one day they can develop a product that can revolutionise the market like apple's iphone did. But that day is definitely not today.

        • +2

@IceCreamBandit: agree. Why bother arguing, just feeding the troll.

        • +5

          @venu:
Millions of people consistently choose Windows over Mac OS, Linux or Chrome OS. Does this make those less popular operating systems worse or a "bad product offering"?

Sometimes it's just easier and more convenient to go with the popular product. Doesn't necessarily mean the alternatives aren't worth a try.

        • @bigjezza: dumb analogies are dumb

        • +1

@adumb: If they lost market share every year (i.e. people leaving), cost the same as the other OS, and has been in the market for about the same amount of time (or longer)… then I would say its a bad product. Lots of people have given windows phones a go, but not many have continued to use it.

      • An appless smart phone. Anyone see a possible issue there?

        • depends what apps you need …… i don't use facebook or play candy crush ….. but i do use shazam ….. i get ozbargain via the browser whether it's my ipad android phone or laptop.

      • +2

I love Windows phones. My point was directed to Xiaomi and Apple users who think Windows phones are dead. Don't know why people would neg me :-)

    • +1

All these deals have flaws. Windows phones is lack of apps. Apple the phone is considered a deal at $1000. The Xiaomi are missing bands and compromise in areas like screen, durability and camera to keep the price low.

      • try Xiaomi 5, U got everything, but aint cheap enough around 400

        • +1

It lacks B28 4G, which is increasingly important for both telstra and optus. Also, with dubious warranty from a lot of overseas sellers, I would rather get a Nexus 6P for 470-570 instead.

        • @twister292: So you'd rather pay $200 for something you almost certainly won't use.

          Smart.

        • +2

          @Diji1:

So the difference between $470 and $400 is $200?

B28 is not something I "certainly won't use". It's the primary band for 4G coverage for both Telstra and Optus. Better indoor coverage plus band aggregation for better speeds, the lack of B28 4G on a device is a pretty big omission if it on the Optus/Telstra network. And I don't think plonking that amount of money for a device that lacks both decent warranty and B28 coverage is good value, esp for Telsta/Optus users.

Plus the 64GB version of the Mi5 is 450+, and the 128GB version is $500+…which puts it not too far from the Nexus 6P with the eBay 20% deal running right now.

        • @twister292: is there any android app that checks the bands that my phone supports?

        • @twister292: Hi there, can you please explain 'B28' a little more, I thought the Lumia's offer this frequency (700), or basically support 4G+/Plus? Am I wrong?

          Cheers,

          Dunker

        • @dunker56:

          B28 is indeed 700MHz.

These Lumias have it indeed. Zlasuka's recommendation is Xiaomi phones, most of them lack B28, and warranty is patchy at best for those.

        • @twister292: Ah gotcha, I misread mb.

        • @hopper:

I'm not aware of frequency checking apps…maybe the peeps at Whirlpool would know

I'm looking to upgrade my Lumia 1020 and looking for HP Elite X3 but this 950XL deal looks so tempting. I'm really thinking to go for 950XL. It would be really good if Dock would've been included. Still an awesome deal !!

I thought someone who was upgrading from a 1020 would prefer the 950xl? The camera in the Elite is considered quite poor for a flagship, and more comparable to midrange phones.

      • Yea. Very true. Camera review for Elite X3 is very poor. I think 950 XL is the best option I've at the moment till Microsoft comes out with their Surface Phones.

1020 still has a biggger camera sensor, i use my 1020 for work horse and a 905XL for my Daily. Mint!

If you want a huge screen, flawless continuum and better specs, HP Elite x3 is your way to go. Otherwise, Lumia 950Xl at such low price is a bargain! Hard call!

  • So the code still works for phones category?

I tested the code on the XL before posting, it works. That original deal might need some updating.
