  • I asked them literally a week ago for a price drop, but no! Now they drop it when it's too late. Not happy Jan!

I bought one Lumia 950XL $454.32, thanks OP.

i like windows phones as we are a windows shop at work for office productivity ..and they integrate so well.. only downside used to be the cost of a 1080p display on luminas vs android which were cheaper with 1080p

I will not touch any phone that forces updates and spends upwards of 10 minutes offline applying them. You have to pick 6 hours of your day where you allow the phone to do this in WP10. I have played with a Lumia 535 and consider WP10 to be a toy. I do shift work and on call. If I don't notice suddenly I'm exposed to being unavailable for the duration of the update. Need to call an ambulance…sorry your phone is updating. Who came up with this rubbish? User should be allowed to apply the update at a time of their choosing and if they don't want to apply updates tough.

    • +4

You can specify hours you want to apply updates with or not very easily.. if you're a shift worker and want it to upgrade during the day when you sleep this is completely doable.

Ah…it's called "Active Hours" in your settings.

Go to settings > update and security > Phone update, then update your active hours to when you need your phone. Once it's set your phone will only download and install updates outside your 'active hours'. Even then the phone prompts you to confirm you are happy to restart when updates are ready to be installed.

You are allowed to apply the updates whenever you like…not sure what your rant is about.

All modern smart phones go through updates, and will need to go 'offline' for them to be applied. If being on call 24/7 means so much to you, maybe use a cheapo feature phone as a work phone?

      • Yes except I'd have to change the active hours every week and sometimes on a daily basis. This isn't an acceptable hassle.

      • On android I can switch off auto updates and hit "check now" at my convenience. And if I don't want a major update I don't have to take it.

And so we have an internet full of zombie devices being used by criminals for extortion, spam, vpns that the computers owners dont know about etc.

      YAY!

      • +1

There are still android devices sold that run version 4.4…3 major versions old. If your little zombie Internet apocalypse were going to occur it would have already. Stop drinking the koolaid.

    I like Windows Phone but it's a sinking ship isn't it ?

    • Probably won't go away.

      Probably :p

      • Maybe we will get a Surface phone?

I'd buy Windows phone if I would be able to install Windows apps on it and use it like a small tablet with Bluetooth mouse etc.

Earlier this year I bought Lumia 640 when there was a good price dear deal at OW but was able to use it for 3 days until a gave up and moved back to Android.

3-4 years earlier I got Lumia 720 and I had it for 1 year. In 3 years on Android phone there is a huge difference (apps, performance etc) but on Windows phone I did not see any difference :/

        • In theory continuum could do it if they fix the bugs. Let's wait and see in a year or two.

Edit: maybe in a year or two may not exist.

        • @harkoliar:

Yes but you need a monitor which makes the experience useless for me.

I can basically do my work on the go as I can use my mobiles to run my business. If I could have a Windows 10 desktop fitted on my 5.7" mobile phone I'd be "out of office" more regularly :D

Microsoft, if you make that happen I'd spend $1000+ on your next device if it could run Windows 10 a bit smoother than my Surface 3 :)

    • will target a business / corporate market that integrates it well with office and their other apps and devices such as surface pro. it was never meant to target the people who buy a xioami note 3 …….

a lot of places go iphones and ipads in a corporate environment due to MDM and lock doesn't etc …. it depends on the market and applications and if it's supported by an IT dept or just a consumer who does it themselves.

    Damn, great prices.

I left windows phone after dropping my lumia 930 six months ago. I still have a soft spot for the platform.

  • +7

Got one 950 XL. I think it's a great upgrade to my 1020 at this price. Happy. Thanks OP. Cheers !!

  • +11

Oh s**t, thank ozbargain, I bought 3 phones these days.

    one iphone 7
    one 950XL
    and one yota 2

and also ,I returend my iphone 7 plus.

  • +3

I'm counting the days until I get a WIndows phone. My S7 is great, but it's wasted on someone like me who doesn't game or use many apps.

Now I know why a lot of companies are giving their employees Windows phones.

  • Is there a comparably-priced android phone to the 950 that has a better camera? I'm using a lumia 820 at present and the only things that are pushing me to upgrade are the camera and the battery life. I am not bothered which operating system I use, but I would like an excellent camera and good battery life. The other one I am looking at is the nexus 5x

    • I believe the Moto G4 Plus would be a good value option and reported to have a better camera than the Nexus 5x. See here from this comment. Not sure about the Moto G4 Plus being as good as this 950 though, however it is a bit cheaper in the low $300s.

    • +3

I think the 950xl has the best camera on a smartphone still. Maybe the s7 is slightly better. I dont think there's any android phones at this price with better cameras.

    • +2

The 950 camera shots are pretty good and some sample pictures are better than Galaxy S7.

      Check comparison here

      • Both look good, the s7 photos look more natural while the 950 colours look more saturated. Comes down to personal preference on which you prefer. I think the 950 wins in low light.

    • I upgraded from a Lumia 820 to the Nexus 5x last week and loving it. My first phone that hasn't had some Microsoft OS. I was considering the Xiaomi Remdmi as a cheap way of trying out Android, but also really wanted a good camera. The recent deals made me pull the trigger on the 5x. I thought the camera on the 820 was pretty good but the 5x camera is way better. Not too sure on battery life yet, its more than enough for my uses, but yesterday I was out whale watching and the battery was pretty low after a couple of hours of taking pics and video.

    • I run Windows 10 on my old Nokia 1020 (the one with the 41mp camera sensor) and for me, it's an unbelievable combo. Photos are epic, particularly as there's an option with the 1020 to take them as DNG files (like RAW files), so I can fully edit all photography parameters in Lightroom, straight off that big sensor. Some of the shots you'd swear are full DSLR.. for a phone - it's very cool.

      • +1

Yes, the 1020 has arguably the best camera on a smartphone. It's a pity that Nokia/Microsoft never made a successor to the 1020.

        • The Nokia 808 actually had a bigger sensor… But that was Symbian s3 days lol

        • @Damonator84: Yes, I've got the 808 also - it's a design masterpiece, and a beautiful thing to have - so incredibly stylish and well made. Its photos are even better than my 1020, but yeah, Symbian.. ugh. I run it jailbroken and updated, which really helps keep it current. But the 1020 is a fab sweetspot for me and blows it away generally, hopefully for a while yet before I switch back to the Iphone when M$oft phones go tits-up.

        • I owned the 808, and had the 1020 for a week before returning it, I just felt after the 808 it wasn't as good and wanted something different/better, so I got the K Zoom.
I honestly have no idea how the K Zoom doesn't get more attention from the cameraphone freaks in the community, I place it top and I have had the 808, 1020, S4 Zoom so feel pretty qualified to rank.

        • @Damonator84:

I actually found a comparison of the s7 edge, 950, 1020 and 808. Interestingly the s7 edge came out just in front of the 808 in these photos.

          http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/21327_2012_vs_2…

        • @Ronnnie:
Err I prefer the bigger camera sensor for better cropping. The 1020 is my fav.

        • @Ronnnie: Yeh I think the S7 is nice indeed, it's camera almost being ignored among the reasons to buy one.

        • @Damonator84: Well i tried both, in the end the 10xoptical Zoom (at 20mp) was a winner, but it wasn't just the zoom, it did macros and hdr far better. Overall Android + this camera gave it so much more versatility than the 1020 (which imo wasn't even up to the 808's). YMMV

  • I ordered a Homtom H10 last week on presale for AU$249 delivered … I would have picked up the XL otherwise.

  • Isn't MS out of the mobile game?

Really would like one, but there is no apps for any of my automated home or car products. All of them, without exception, only make iOS and android apps.

  • +5

Good price for the phone, but with deals for the Nexus 6P not that far off in price, it's hard to recommend.

The "app gap" is real, and it's gaping wide.

    • Yeah, that's ture

So for this phone I suggest using this as a secondary phone ,with a small iPhone SE ,5,6,7 or android etc. Then you will get a brilliant camera with ZEISS sticker and a good display.

Also the start interface layout for new WP10 is still fresh(I really like that mail and calendar app)

Becuase of the app gap, I think It is totally a 'business' phone.

      • I really think it's going to the lines of blackberry… Definitely more business phone but of course has selection of games.

        • Yes, we think the same thing, I'm returning and exchanging my AT&T blackberry priv from amazon us due to a battery fault. It may need over 2months for the delivery.

          That's why I'm thinking a 5.5"+ phone.

          Sad

      • +3

As a Windows Phone user for past 5 years, I agree. I still don't get why Microsoft is so lethargic when it comes to getting the developers for the platform. I really like the OS, but there is definitely an app gap

        • Its like this..
"We want more developers.. please come to our platform"..

          As long as you dont:

"Ask us to change our OS for your convenience, unlock parts of it because your app actually needs to do that, break anything that is against our business model. If our future patches or updates breaks any of your apps, then its your fault for writing it like this."

Bit of a joke seriously. Not to mention the paid stuff is almost twice as expensive as the equivalent on Android and IOS.

  • +2

Bit the bullet, Ordered the 950XL , my 930 still working well but I think it time to upgrade the camera on the 930 is pretty good but a bit slow compare to the newer one , this is the most expensive phone I've ever bought since the smart phone took the market.

  • Great price…but after on windows phone for nearly 3 and half years i'll going apple way now.. have used lumia 920 and 640 xl, great camera, smooth operating system.. lack of app didn't bother me initially but windows have not made any effort in that area. Even trf music from comp to windows use to be simple but half of the songs are now not in the playlist. Whats the point if we have to troubleshoot basics things. Recently updated to windows 10 and lost all contacts so decided had enough..

    • Contacts are normally associated to the account and stored as part of the account, along with calendar details. I would try accessing the account from a browser to check.

  • How does this phone handle instagram? On my windows 8 home pc, can i just visit the store, is that where I'll get a rough idea of what is and isn't available?

    • Official Instagram app is available - handles it fine. I would suggest visiting the phone's app store for a full listing.

I am holding myself NOT to get the Lumia 950XL! My Lumia 950 is my fav phone, but maybe I would not mind a bigger phone!!!

  • +1

It looks like Mobileciti added listings for white as well today, I've linked them in the OP now.

    • cool wanted a whitey!

  • Lumia 640 you have been a kick ass little phone for last 6 or so months and probably completely satisfactory - BUT a Lumia 950 is now coming my way!! Thanks OP and thanks for the 10% code. Now I have to grab a NanoSIM from my telco.

    • +1

Thanks for the reminder about a NanoSIM, forgot about that in all the excitement of getting the 950XL to replace my much loved 640 (which replaced the also much loved 720).

Have been considering a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro but really like the look and feel of Windows Mobile, not into millions of apps or playing games so Windows suits my needs perfectly.
For me this deal on the 950 and 950XL is too good to miss, thanks OP!

      • +2

Me too. W10M suits me and in my opinion works brilliantly – smooth, fast, no lock ups. I have used iOS and Android so have a reasonable understanding of the alternatives. I can't see the value in a $1000 iPhone 7 or S7 though. It’s frustrating to be the 1% minority leper camp that being a Windows user is - and difficult to understand why a megacompany like Microsoft do not promote the hardware/software. The UWP apps are coming but it’s like watching grass grow. One exciting thing that sets W10M apart now is integrated SMS, so you can check and send text messages from your Windows 10 desktop.
