  • What's the bargain?

    • Free set up and delivery?

Didn't seem to be a problem for this deal:

    • +64

There once was a 'company' called Vaya
      A torturous telco in Straya.
      Their small printed jargon,
      Negate any bargain,
      Burnt customer, not just naysayer.

      • You my sir are a lyrical genius, a gentleman and a scholar. I tip my fedora to you.

  • Pretty good.
The $24/mth is now $22/mth, so that's good.
And the $27/mth (which had 2.5GB) is now $28/mth but you get 3GB.

    • That's because people that were on the $18 plan with 1.5gb used to pay an extra $10 on a month they needed 1gb more data

This new plan intices people to go with the $28 plan ongoing

      • The old $27/mth was kind of an incentive already. You'd pay $9 instead of $10 for an extra 1GB.

        • Yeah but with the $18 plan you dont pay the $10 extra it if you dont use that much for the month.

  • +2

i need more data for the $18 plan
i dont make calls so the bigger plans are useless to me

    • +2

So get the 28 plan which includes more data but same calls.

      • -7

im saying they havent changed this plan in years, should increase the cap now

data doesnt cost carriers anything. stupid made up scarcity

        • +7

          data doesnt cost carriers anything

          Seriously? LOL

        • +5

"data doesnt cost carriers anything. stupid made up scarcity"

This is utter rubbish. Data is easily the most expensive component of a customer's plan for the carriers to supply, and the scarcity is real.

Carriers pay very serious money for enough backhaul to support data usage, and the cost of the radio spectrum licensing is in the billions.

Calls and SMS cost the carriers very little these days; hence the proliferation of low-cost plans with unlimited calls and SMS. Data is where the true costs lie.

        • +2

@furythree: That's so far wrong I don't even know where to start - easily the silliest thing I've read today.

I suggest you do a LOT of learning about how mobile broadband is delivered before spouting such nonsense.

        • +1

          @klaw81:

Not really nonsense, he just described SMS instead of mobile broadband :p I believe originally they started out piggybacking on the devices cell tower pings, thus the character limit.

        • @DarkLotus:
Ah, I knew it sounded familiar, I just couldn't place it….

        • @furythree: It sounds like you don't know how the technology works. The signal does does not piggyback off the pings - the pings are there to test the signal is still there, and only when your phone is testing for a signal. And a ping is usually 32 bytes. That means you can make 32768 pings before you use a single megabyte of data.

        • @Spam Service: actually everyone is right. In my fit of cheapskate rage i confused it with the SMS pings

        Jeenee $25 beats Vaya $28

        Just switched today

        • Can u tether with jeenee?

        • @Gavman: Yes.

        • @StewBalls: pretty poor that u can't make international calls with jeenee

        • +2

@Gavman: Yeah, they don't come around & fold your towels into swans either, but c'est la vie at this price point.

        • @StewBalls: probably the only telco that doesn't. Other telcos offer same plans with better excess data rates and international calls

        • @Gavman: You should just sign with one of those telcos then…

        • @StewBalls: I have. I was looking at jeenee but I always make sure to skim critical info pages before. Luky I did on this occasion.

        • @Gavman:

          better excess data rates

          1GB for $10, or 2.5GB for $20

          Anyone offer better?

        • @Gavman: International calls and roaming are apparently coming first half of this year.

    • Jeenee offers a Pennywise plan with 1.8Gb data for the same $18/month - an extra 300Mb for the same price. Or the Coaster plan with 2Gb for $22/month, if that suits you better.

      • From their critical info sheet you cannot make international calls from their service and their excess data charges are 4c per mb. That's $40 a gb. 4x more than Vaya. This might not suit.

    • Try spintel. Minimum calls and sms, but 4gig of data for $27

  • +1

Important to know: If you have Vaya Power Plan already, you cannot upgrade to a Unlimited Plan. I tried to do this last week but their networks, apparently, dont allow them to do that. They wouldn't even allow me to cancel my service and reapply with my current number

    • +1

Buy a $2 SIM (or somehow get hold of one for free), and port over, then port back to Vaya.

    • Port out to optus ($2 sim), then join again.

      Edit: Beat me to it!

      • +1

This wont work as you're name matched with the number is in their system. Something to do with their accounts

        • +6

Save yourself the trouble and switch to Jeenee or similar. Vaya are not worth the hassle IMO.

    • +1

OMG I had to go through this trouble when trying to upgrade my mum's plan to unlimited, this and the lengthy list of problems and dodginess from vaya prompted me to just port out to another service provider. Went with Virgin's $30 unlimited plan in the end.

    • +2

They wouldn't even let me change up from one power plan to another power plan without a $10 fee (even though I want to pay them more per month!). I'm about to buy a new sim and leave them due to their stupidity.

      • That's just….bizarre. They don't want your money? _

  • wow… $18 for 1.5GB of data .. I think I'll see what iiNet can do for me and keep me under the 1 bill.

    • Jeenee has $18 for 1.8GB of data.

  • What are the issues with Vaya, OP?

    • +8

Lots of people on here don't like some of their tactics used in the past (the $20 Mobile Prepayment, which the ACCC has since ruled was invalid charging) and their general customer service.

      • +2

err so do we get the $20 back?

        • +3

Seeing this actually reminded me to check with them. A customer service rep said it would be refunded upon the cancellation of the service. I doubt the validity of it as ACMA ruled it invalid, but I've just sent them an email to try and expedite the process.

        • +1

          @pernunz:
This is what they responded with, which still seems like they are dodging the question:
Thanks for your email and we apologise for any confusions that our previous message may have caused.
Please be advised that the $20 charge is a mere deposit and is not payment for any charges that you have incurred. This will serve as a mobile pre-payment and is fully refundable upon termination of your service agreement with us.
Please be advised, as mentioned in our previous message, this change is fully compliant with the Telecommunication Consumer Protections Code.
We will only apply the mobile pre-payment in the event of non-payment of your monthly invoice or on your final invoice (should you ever decide to leave Vaya). In the event of having it applied to your final invoice for your final service, any remaining balance will be directly refunded to you.
Please be advised that there are no interest arrangements and this is a mere deposit that you can claim upon the termination of our service with us and we rest assured that this charge is once-off.

        • @pernunz: so the answer is no… sigh

        • +1

          @furythree:
I just had the following email conversation:
          Me:

          Hi Vaya,

As per the email dated 4 Feb 2015, you advised that the collection of this security deposit was "within the Telecommunication Consumer Protections Code"

However, the AMCA ruling clearly states that Vaya did not comply with the Telecommunication Consumer Protections Code as below

          1. Clause 6.4.1(a) states that a supplier must base the requirement for a security deposit on the outcome of a credit assessment conducted in relation to the consumer and the product to be acquired by the consumer [our emphasis].

Unless you can provide evidence that an individual credit assessment was conducted in relation to me, then as per the ACMA ruling, vaya contravened clause 6.4.1(a) of the TCP Code on 4 February 2015 in relation to each of its customers by demanding a security deposit in circumstances contrary to the TCP Code.

If this $20 cannot be refunded or credited to my account, then I will be lodging a TIO complaint.

          Regards,

          Them:

          Thank you for your email.

We have escalated this to the Management and they've credited back the $20 Mobile Prepayment to your Vaya account. You can apply the $20 credit towards your next bill.

Should you have any further queries please feel free to contact us on 1300 00 8292. You may also message us on Facebook, Twitter, Forum or simply email us again.

        • @pernunz: i shouldnt have to email them in the first place

          edit

just copy pasted your email with some changes, we'll see how we go!

    • +8

I've had the $18 plan for about 2 years or more, never had an issue

      • +14

issues start when you cancel. They will keep charging you, sometimes for a few months. Then once you call & stop, they might start charging you again after 6-8 months.

        • +1

Lodge complaint and TIO online form - should get it resolved pretty quick

        • Or just when you try to make ANY change to your plan. I changed my plan and the issues were so bad I ended up cancelling and going elsewhere, even if it was more costly just for my sanity.

Now I'm on Boost. $20 a month. Not better value but Telstra 4G and it's enough for me.

        • I had no real issues when I cancelled (ported to virgin 2 months ago). Just had to call to request the deposit and pro rata refund (which was sitting as a credit in my account) to be refunded.

        • +1

@Peannut: that was last year. all sorted now.

      • +3

Me too, 2+ years, no issues at all.

        • +2

Me 3 - happy paying a low rate. Been with them since they started their 4G service (4 yrs ago??) The only issues i have had were chasing up the credits they pay when signing up family and driends. I think its up to $50 now!
There are a lot of vaya haters though, who have had issues. I had a friend that left vaya in a huff, even though she was the one that stuffed up by going wayyyyyyy over her data allowance. But I have no teason to change. All happy days here, especially since they have gone like everyone else charging per kb, not mb.

        • @Dover: high-five!

    • None for me, been with them over 2 years. Great value, 4G network, no problems.

I doubt any of the lower cost providers competing with Vaya are free from issues either and in most cases the plans are not as good, either more expensive or don't have 4G etc.

  • This company has better value unlimited plans https://www.jeenee.org.au/products/sim-packs/

    • They offer different plans, but not exclusively better plans for all options.

For example, if you only want 2.5GB of Data, with unlimited calls and texts, then Vaya is a better option at $28/month, compared to Jeenee's $30/month (which includes 3GB)

It is up to the user to decide what is best for their own use, but if you fall in the 2-2.5GB Monthly data usage, it looks like Vaya is the better value option.

      • The Pennywise $25 plan (unlimited calls, text and 2.5gb) is better value than Vaya $28

        • The Pennywise plans are only available for order placed before yesterday, so may not still be valid.

    • Watch out before you switch to jeenee. From their critical info sheet you cannot make international calls from their service and their excess data charges are 4c per mb. That's $40 a gb. 4x more than Vaya

  • -1

I moved from Vaya to Jeenee mobile about a year ago when they stung everyone $20, I never did get that $20 back…

Anyway, I can highly recommend Jeenee. Their plans are more than fair, per KB data charge on Optus (Vaya are per MB last time I checked), their customer service is excellence, very small business like and the money also goes towards helping others so I feel good about that to.

If you are happy to pay a bit more than Vaya https://www.jeenee.org.au

    • +2

Vaya changed to KB billing a while ago (May 2015), and you should have got that $20 back.

    • That $20 should've been refunded:

"Instead, we've decided to opt for, like some of our competitors, a once-off, refundable Security Deposit of $20 per mobile service. This Security Deposit will be required of all of our customers, at a rate of $20 per mobile service, and will be drawn from your nominated payment source along with your next bill payment (this month). We will only apply the Security Deposit in the event of non-payment of your monthly invoice or on your final invoice (should you ever decide to leave Vaya). In the event of having it applied to your final invoice for your final service, any remaining balance will be directly refunded to you."

      • should of, but vaya are absolute crap and unless you ring up and complain, they wont voluntarily refund you your money. thats the problem with these guys, they profit off lazy people who cbf fighting it.

        • +1

I sent them 3 emails over 3 months to get my money back, the time commitment wasn't huge (few minutes an email) and got it in the end. Just what you have to expect when you sign up for these cheap mobile plans.

        • Agreed. I had to so this when getting the $200 roaming deposit refunded from Vaya. Otherwise they just keep the money and deduct your monthly plan fee until it runs out.

Sending a few follow up emails was all it took. Better than paying Optus $50 per month, as I was before the move to Vaya and $18 a month.

  • +1

Now that I think about it it may just have come out of our final bill, either way, I was happy just to be leaving them given all the dramas I had had leading up to that point. Point is, whatever your expectations are of Vaya before you sign up, lower them so you are not disappointed.

  • do these guys have better coverage than vodaphone? I'm on a $25 a month plan which only has something like $300 worth of calls per month. thank you.

    • +1

They use the Optus network. I can't speak for coverage based on where you might be, you'll need to check the various coverage maps to get a rough estimate.

      • thanks for info

    • +1

      Uses Optus network

      • Does that mean if a if I call Vaya number from an Optus pre-paid is the call free?
It's the same network but calling from Optus but going to a Vaya (which is on Optus again)

        • Probably not, different provider. You could try and see? Someone else might know.

    • +1

Amaysim also provides unlimited calls for $25/m. I'd go with them as they can be prepaid if you want that. Also, Vaya is now owned by Amaysim.

      • SSDS.

  • +2

used vaya for like 3 years now
    best bang for buck

    • I use Vaya as well. The only other thing I was considering is going with Amaysim, getting the pay as you go plan and a 10GB datablock as I don't make many calls etc. I think it might work out marginally cheaper for my usage.

  • Vaya is now owned by Amaysim so I would expect customer service levels to increase, but perhaps not by all that much…

I am another disgruntled Vaya user who was happily with them for a number of years but left due to their $20 security deposit charge.

  • any plan with same value but with Telstra network? any suggestion?

    • Boost mobile seems like a good choice if it suits your needs.

      • $20per/month only 100mins??? 1.5GB data is great.

    • Aldimobile has great value but no 4G. I am OK with 3G speeds.

      https://www.aldimobile.com.au/plans/mvaluepack

      $20/month

      400 min calls + free aldi2aldi
      50k sms
1.5gb data (includes 500mb for weekends and 1gb usual data)

  • -6

A lot of misinformation here. Anyone being discouraged should read vayas terms and conditions and not the repeated dribble of unhappy ex-customers

    • +1

Terms and conditions only work when both sides stick to them.

People's feedback is great to have an understanding of the way they operate and service you may have.

  • 2+ years on three phones. No issues either.

  • I went with TPG yesterday on their $19.99 plan with first 6 months charged $10.

Just saying as i found thise to be better value.

    • how many GB is the data? im struggling with 1.5Gb each month.

    • -2

Have fun with 10c per mb over. 1gb over Asia = $100. 200mb over =$20, which is the monthly cost of the whole plan such which gives you 1.5gb.

1gb over with vaya is only $10 excess instead of $100 with tpg.

      • You do understand if there is no extra money in your account things just stops there and you do not get nasty surprises.

        • -1

U also get no data when u need it most. $10 for an extra gb is reasonable and happy to go over knowing u get a fair amount of data without a huge charge.

    • Ouch

  • +14

Cannot vouch for Vaya, I was on a $14 plan for 3-ish years (1.5GB and certain amount of calling and text), out of no where they 'upgraded' my plan for me to $24. I never really noticed until a year later, they justified it with "it's a legacy plan and we have to charge $10 extra for you to keep it. But your network is upgraded to 4G now!" I don't get 4G in my area nor did I sign up for it.
However when I accidentally went over my data they charged me my good ol' legacy 40c per MB instead of the 4c per MB that the 'new' 4g plans now offer.
Vaya will continually give you the shit end of the stick and reem you whenever possible.
Beware of bullshit fee's they introduce out of nowhere and their TERRIBLE customer service. They barely speak English. I called three times and escalated once to the manager, while I'm trying to negotiate some way to refund that extra $10 a month, or cut a deal to be reverted back to my old plan, or even change my plan from 40c per MB to 4c. They kept threatening me with $20 cancellation fee's, no refunding, no credit, etc, etc. They lose their patience with me after 5 minutes on the phone. No compromise on their end even after being with them for so many years.
For shame Vaya. Stay far away. They're not worth the trouble. Shocking customer service.

    • +6

      +1, i agree!

    • +1

I have to agree, avoid Vaya. I shifted to them and whilst the service provided is fine (they are with Optus), customer service is poorly lacking.

If you have any issues with your service or bill, you will have an incredibly hard time to get it resolved. I also was hit with a string of hidden fees and was not provided with the discounts I was entitled too. After months of trying to get it resolved, I just gave up. Vaya then charged a cancellation fee and did not refund my deposit (for Global roaming). When I called them they said here were holding my credit and it will be applied to any future Vaya services.

Avoid Vaya. They may be cheaper, but you will regret the decision.

      • -1

There is a lot of hate for Vaya on here as always. It is possible to be with them and have no real problems, as is the case with me. Perfectly happy with them.

If you chase up the roaming deposit you should get it back. Their standard approach is to hold onto it and use it for your monthly cost until it runs out. But you can get it back, as I have on a couple of occasions just by following up on email.
