The Optus version is much better than the Telstra version?
From the limited info I can find these are the areas the Optus version is better
-Faster Quad core vs dual core
-1gb of ram vs 512mb
-8gb of storage vs 4gb
-8mp camera (according to whirlpool posters) vs 5mp
-Lollipop 5.1 vs kitkat
-4g including band 28 vs ??Worth spending the extra $20 for, especially considering you are getting the $20 voucher for Google play.
Indeed the Optus version is a smarter buy.
I've bought the Optus version for my in-laws just the other day.
As per comment above by @Ronnie most of the details are correct, except for the following:
- only 4GB of storage (3.7GB on-board useable, expandable to 32GB with micro-SD card) (if micro-SD inserted, can set default storage for apps & data directly to SD card)
- 5MP Rear Camera & VGA Front Camera for photos, 720p@30fps for video recording
- 1Ghz Quad Core Processor (Mediatek MT6735M)
- 480 x 854 pixels (~218 ppi pixel density)
- Battery: Li-Ion 1780 mAh battery (4G model)
- Micro SIM slot
- 150Mbps 4G connectivity thru Optus
Included Accessories:
- Stereo Headset with Mic & volume
- 1.5m Micro-USB cable
- 5V/550mA Micro-USB Travel ChargerUnlocking:
Within first 6 months, Optus charges $60
After 6 months, Optus charges $20
Got these quotes directly from Optus during purchase!eBay has unlock code for this handset available for $1.49 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221464434980?_trksid=p2057872.m27…)
Cheers….
Update:
I have just managed to unlock the phone using the eBay link above.
I can now use the phone with a Vodafone sim!
Now Optus can piss off with their $60 unlocking RIP-OFF fees!
cheers
Looks like it's the Pixi 3 vs Pixi 4.5
I think Optus has just left out the number 3 in their description as the "4.5" probably represents the screen size.
Maybe genes888 can confirm?
Got this for $15 from Big W and used this guy for unlocking
http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/tejasunadkatcost me $2.
All in all $17 for a smartphone to be used by kids. Takes ok pics, plays music, Youtube and games. Excellant option.
PS : this phone would struggle if you over extend it but for basic stuff it is well worth it.
$15? When? Which store bro?
Yes, Please advise which BIG W store sells this at $ 15 —- Tks
Sorry guys, this was prior to christmas. they had 50% of optus prepaid then.
Got a Desire 520 for $80 and returned it last week
May I know what will be call credit? Where can I get more information about included text / call credit?
Our Pre-Paid phones come with a SIM and $10 included credit.
Just activated included SIM this morning…
Phone comes with $10 Bonus Credit (can't use for Google Play or be transferred) - for calls & text. From past experience, that usually expires in 14 days.
But if you activate by tomorrow night you get 28 days & 5GB plus the usual $10 Bonus Credit included when activated on Freedom Plan. Call & sms charges should be those of Freedom Plan (not cheap).
Worth it for included 5GB data if you're quick. Worked for me, as shown in my account.
Now you can get free wifi at Telstra Air hotspots till the middle of the year, see here.
$4 with HN email voucher?
That works only with orders above $150
Does anyone know how much better/worse the optus version is?
(Telstra: 1.3 Ghz dual core & Optus: 1Ghz quad core)
The big difference between the two is more the lack of ram. Android really needs at least 1gb to run reasonably smooth. I do have a similar dual core 1gb Alcatel device in the Telstra essential tablet, and I found can be quite laggy at times. I can only imagine that this phone would be somewhat similar. Which at $29 is to be expected I guess. :) I have found quad core plus 1gb perform adequately enough. I personally wouldn't buy anything below the specs of the Optus version.
with android the more ram you have the better, I had the Optus ZTE fit as a GPS in car and I would say it struggles even with only google map running.
so this one is not 4G yet?
Something nobody mentioned, wouldn't this Telstra 5GB also include Google Play credit? $30, 50 ?
If not desperately after the phone itself, that could be a win for this Telstra version. I myself buy my daughter the cheap Telstra data packs and I use the Google Play credits. 5GB for $29 plus Google Play credit would be a deal for me. Unsure if Play credit is included though? Or how much…
EDIT: Nevermind, Infidel rules this out above (missed it earlier).
Ah Click_It, you've got to be quick. Glad I answered your question before you asked it ;-)
Sometimes I'm lazy and don't want to read all the messages - but at the same time like to be sure it hasn't been addressed still (managed to avoid a "try reading what Infidel said above" just in the nick of time) ;)
It was tucked away, so added again below. Who reads all comments anyway?
5GB data bonus offer runs out end of tomorrow. So be quick to activate your $10 included SIM (with any Telstra Phone like this) or a '$30' Starter Pack - on Freedom Plan. Handy for those who bough those packs for $1 or so.
Thanks. Deciding between this and the Optus version.
My needs: Give my young daughter a phone (cheaper than buying a tablet, and good enough for her needs) - won't need sims etc, just loading on with videos and stuff for the car and what not.
Telstra: Phone might be bit slow for her? But I get 5GB data to give to my eldest daughter
Optus: Phone is faster, eldest daughter misses out:)
Get the Optus one then do this - Not a Telstra Customer, but Want Access to Telstra Air? Do It for $2!
Obviously you'll have to unlock it. See genes888 comment above, he did it for $1.49.That's a good idea, I might do just that. $49 + 2 + 1.49 = $52.49. Unlocked, free data till July (it's unlimited, right?)
Yes, unlimited as far as I know. Hopefully you have a Telstra Air hotspot nearby.
I assume Telstra or someone post the locations of these, will look later. They also use old Phone Booths don't they? I'm in a built up area so it's extremely likely we're covered.
Thank you!
I didn't have a chance to search yet, saved me some trouble much appreciated.
EDIT: There is a Telstra Hotspot in the apartment block behind my property! And another across the park in the other direction (our living room faces toward one, our bedroom toward the other) Nice! :)
EDIT2: Just checked my 2 previous addresses (one of which was country Victoria) and on each property there were 2 close hot spots. Impressive.
I bought the 4GX Buzz before Christmas - am posting on it with included SIM activated on Freedom Plan data ;-)
it WAS a great deal at $63 including free ($99 at JB) Monster DNA headphones, $10 SIM with 5GB bonus, delivery and hopefully $10 cash back.
Can't comment on this phone. (I'm still using a $27 single core 7" Huawei tablet for videos. Has a great IPS screen, but very slow browser.)
Are you able to block numbers using this phone?
Does it have this option/feature?
Can use a free app for that
Cheers.
Daughter had iPhone 3before and couldn't block numbers on that…..
Bought this phone with new number, so hopefully she'll be more cAreful to who gets her numberI've been using Blacklist App. Its free but says has ads.
Phone briefly starts to ring, then shows as blocked. (I've set to "pick up then hang up", so no voicemail is left.) Handy to block telemarketing numbers. Also blocks SMS from blocked numbers.Expired Blacklist ad free deal. According to first comment (mine) "You can block calls in Contacts App in Android.". (I didn't remember that!) You add called as a Contact & click Block calls. Discussed in Forum on blocking calls
Unsure how Blacklist is but I use "Should I Answer?" app which also shares knowledge of dodgy numbers amongst the users. I used to have to google the numbers, not anymore. Very handy app. Would gladly pay for it (from my free google play credit) but there is no option to do so.
@Click_It:
Thanks Click_It.
There are a few solutions. Should I Answer scores 4.8, Blacklist 4.1 on Play. Shared offline Database of dodgy numbers sounds interesting solution. I just haven't got around to trying other apps.A few of my blocked numbers are from people I no longer want to receive calls, SMS or voicemail from, so Blacklist works, as I know the number already. I only have about 6 blocked numbers
Blacklist requires you to Blacklist recent callers or add from Contacts. Its like clicking Hide to block users comments on Ozbargain, when you realise they are a troll etc.
It works for me as I receive so few calls as my main number is kept clear for urgent (eg family emergencies) or important messages only. Even less now (overseas) telemarketing calls are blocked.
See comments in this deal post about unlocking.
Also the Optus 4G version is $20 more - Alcatel Pixi 4.5 4G (Locked to Optus) $49 + Bonus $20 Google Play Credit @ Optus Store
