Bitdefender Internet Security 2015 - Free for 9 Months (OzBargain Exclusive)

1950

Okay this is what happened. Last month Bitdefender contacted me asking whether they can send me an exclusive offer for OzBargain, similar to last time. 6 months free?! No way! When other companies manage to get free 9 months subscription. So they came back again last week saying that they have upped the offer to 9 months as well. "Exclusive" to OzBargain.

Probably still not as good as the TechRadar one (9 months free worth $45, rather than 9 months 3 PCs worth $90). Likely to be able to stack on your existing subscription.

Edit: A few things about the product:

  • PRODUCT OF THE YEAR. PC MAG Editor's Choice - 3 Years in a Row.
  • Imperceptible. GOLD Award for Fastest System Speed. Jan 2015
  • Easy to Use. Simple to Understand. Handle Security with a Single Click.
  • Prevent Unauthorized Access to your Private Data. Two-Way Firewall.
  • Keep your Kids Safe. Monitor Their Activity. Discrete Parental Control.

As I spend most of my time on Linux, Microsoft Defender is "good enough" for me when I'm on Windows. However do read through some of the past deals on Bitdefender where many swear by them.

Maybe we should ask them for a ChoiceCheapies one as well?!

  • I was looking for one.
    Thanks

  • can't argue with that price!

  • scotty you're a babe
ill stay safe on the internet now.

  • So those who took up the 6 months thing a few months ago…can they get a 'top up' to 9 months starting today? Or another 9 months on top? or nothing?

    • +1

It's effectively an extension to 9 months.

  • The BitDefender anti-virus engine is used in various Anti-Virus programs, some of which are already completely free, eg Qihoo 360 Total Security where is uses Bitdefender as one of it's engines and also includes Avira engine.

    • Or bitdefender themselves offer a version called BitDefender Free

    • some info on Qihoo (which I'd never heard of before, thanks :) ). It's Chinese btw which may scare some off:

      • The "best answer" talking about infected text files might scare you off as well :D

My Norton expired just yesterday, good timing! Is this as good or better?

    • +3

      Better

    • +9

      Everything is better than Norton

      • Not everything. Believe it or not, they've improved it. It still isn't a great idea compared to alternatives like this one though.

        • +1

They don't need to improve, they need a miracle. I used to use them like 20 years ago while they were good.

They missed the train to future. Overloaded their software with crap no one needed just because they thought they can.

        "Everything is better than Norton"

        So true!

    • +3

Have fun getting that crap off your computer. Even BD can't help with that! ;)

    • I was using Norton and only moved to Bit defender because Norton doesn't participate in AV-Comparatives so I don't know whether or not their detection rates are up to par. However Norton is very light on resources due to the newer versions. Back in the day if you had Norton it was equivalent to having a virus (resource hog) because you'd spend most of the day trying to get rid of it.

    • Better than Norton but not better than Symantec security. Symantec own Norton but their best security products are the "endpoint security" products marketed for business use. Perfectly fine for home use too.

    • My free norton expied 3 days back last offer from norton, but i gone with AVG free for a year.

    we love scotty :)

  • Anything for macs?

    • +1

      A mac 10 =p

  • Can anyone confirm if it stakes

    • No it does not stack.

      • I assume you're meaning it doesn't stack on another free offer, but it might stack on an actual purchased license…?

  • GG, Scotty :)

  • +1

Code will reset it back to 270 days. No complaints!

  • Thanks Scotty.
Anyone know when this deal expires?

  • Hows this compared to the AVG deal from yesterday?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/188622

    • No comparison…bitdefender is Miles ahead.

    • IMHO both are good. Bitdefender is more set it and forget it.

Was going to jump on this, but then i had a look around…this only scored 2 out of 5 at Expert Reviews, and 3 out of 5 at PC Mag Reviews…apparently really poor malware detection :(

  • Dear Sir,
We thank you for your continued lone support of our products. Subsequently your cheque has been posted and should arrive sometime after our next complete upgrade.
    Regards,
    Symantec PR Team.

    • Is the Norton cashback promo in the form of a cheque? I never bothered to pick one up but that's pretty inconvenient :( most cashbacks these days are the prepaid Visa/Mastercards

      • Last one from HN was a cheque which arrived promptly, but it was the first and last time I use Norton.

      • I actually meant to hit reply on the post above! I was being sarcastic about his reviews of BD. If you search enough you'll find bad reviews on just about any product out there!

  • I bought this not too long ago and unfortunately the amount of crashes I had made me un-install it.

    • Why is coke a bargain @ 50 cents a can if there is water nearly free? You can't compare that. Besides that a bargain means cheaper then usually and 0.- is cheaper than around $40.-

    • +1

You're argument only makes sense if all security products are equal. They are not equal.

That said Avast seems to rate pretty well (although it was a terrible resource hog, maybe they've improved this).

Windows Defender and MSSE for that matter is usually bypassed by new threats probably because it's the most common security product.

  • Woo hoo!

  • Love to hear you are on Linux Scotty! What distro are you rocking? I'm on Arch currently.

    • +1

Currently Ubuntu 14.04 on desktop & Debian 7 on servers. Started with Slackware 20 years ago, moved to Debian, RedHat, Mandrake, Gentoo and now back to Debian/Ubuntu again (for the last 6-7 years).

  • Thanks scotty keep up the good work, just what I needed, AVG 1 year expired.

  • How to stack on your current bitdefender?

  • Seriously, do you even need to pay for antivirus?

I've been using Avira for YEARS, with ANY issues.

…not sure if I even need Avira; the default Windows one may be good enough…

  • how good is this compared to avg?

    • +3

      About 200%

  • so i switched from Avast today to give this a whirl.
i ran the tests here http://malware.wicar.org/ and while none of the malware got through bitdefender, it only raised an alarm for a few of them.
Avast provided an 'alarm' for all of them.
in bitdefender the page simply didn't load and i just got a blank screen.
so i'll keep going with this for a bit but i'm not convinced it's as good as Avast based on those results.
happy to hear a counter argument.

    • nvm

    • Going to guess that avast also generates a lot more false positives?

  • My McAfee Livesafe is due to expire, should I renew or is this software better?

  • It's only IS, since my TS subscription still has 8.5 months left, I'll wait for the next TS code, though I've got plenty of time..

  • i've since uninstalled bitdefender.
since running it this morning it messed up utorrent and somehow slowed my internet speeds to a crawl.
i could not even load a webpage to look for solutions.
i rebooted and the program hung for ages before saying it had issues and to reboot…
and yes i checked against another laptop on the same wifi and that was fine.
since uninstalled, utorrent and the internet now ticking along nicely thanks very much.
could be unique to me and yes i do know how to install software etc etc etc.

edit: since looked and found i'm not alone: http://malwaretips.com/threads/bitdefender-internet-security…
i'd suggest run a speedtest before and after installing this software to see if it is causing you any issues.
might also pay to run a parallel (but obviously not simultaneous) speedtest on a non BitDef device (mobile phone etc) on the same wifi network to see if the speeds are different.

  • Does BitDefender take care of spam in Outlook?

  • Had some problems with the bitdefender_isecurity.exe online downloader 2.8mb installer from the click through link.

It kept saying "You require an internet connection" , for anyone interested in the offline installer, it's the same except doesn't require an internet connection when you install it. Link here choose Internet Security, and 32bit or 62bit depending on your OS. It's around 300mb+ the offline installer.

  • Bitdefender massively slowed down chrome for me - all pages would take much longer to load. Seems to be a common problem, has been for years, unfortunately.
