Cheers mate. If you don't mind, I'll add this to the post.

    • i can't download "Sorry, you have reached your download limit for this file Go to homepage"

      any dropbox guys?

      • Removed direct links from post, as they no longer work. Unless someone else can provide new ones, you'll have to do it the long way via the main link.

    • Thanks LurvinOZB, i used this on my existing install and it worked.

  • Can anyone vouch for this?

Sorry, you have reached your download limit for this file :-(

If u have the free version installed (like I do), just activate the code and the install will begin on its own.

    Thanks TA, your a legend

    • Where do u do that? Ive got the free version

This program is quite good. Our work uses it's business edition with few hundred licenses. IT guys decided to implement this after exploring few other options. Doesn't use much resources like norton.

I bit the last time the offer came up. I wouldn't recommend it if you are just going to install the whole shebang and run with it, some tweaking is required (like disable link scanner and email scanner).
Was super annoyed when AVG decided it was its own certificate authority resulting in various sites showing up as dangerous.
    Caveat emptor.

    • yeah avast! does that too….annoys me greatly

I'll just stick with Avira this time. Last time this offer came up, AVG decided (after about 3 months of use) that "Oops - it looks like you have an illegal copy of this product". The offer came from AVG's own website so that was a bit confusing.

yep, same here, that deal must have been some sort of spam attempt to trick people into buying, not keen on such tactics, goodbye AVG.

  • I have been using AVG for about 10 years, 5 years for fully paid version, very happy with it. Sometimes get false alerts but better than other way round.

Does everyone still just use MSE, or is that considered inadequate these days? (I've been away from Windows for a while).

    • +2

MSE is considered 'baseline' protection by Microsoft. Baseline as in "better than no protection".

It started off as a great product but later in 2012~2013 it lost it's AV test certifications.. It also once again failed this year's test. I don't think Microsoft is trying too hard to develop it's own security software any time soon (since there's no money in it), Redmond knows that most business users would be using some 3rd party endpoint security product and the average consumer user going with Avast or AVG.

M$ should probably abandon it, or either buy up an antivirus company and have them integrate a better product into Windows.

Microsoft had a pretty lame offering with "Windows Defender" for Vista (Not to be confused with the rebranded Windows Defender for Windows 8) and they bought out an anti-virus company to release Microsoft Security Essentials. I feel like it's always going to perform poorly as being Microsoft and fear of anti-competitive claims I imagine they release all of their definitions to all the other vendors which means they will be at minimum at least as good as MSSE anyway.

I still use MSE, but I've never had a virus on my own PCs and MSE has only had to "protect" me from a few false positives here and there. I work in IT and have been using computers for 15+ years so know how not to get them, or at least I employ enough preventive measures to not have to catch them once they have already found their way onto my machines.

For experienced users who want the bare basic real time protection/scanner like me, then MSE is reliable, compatible, non-obtrusive and uses a tiny amount of resources.

For everyone else looking for free AV, I recommend Bitdefender Free: http://www.bitdefender.com.au/solutions/free.html
Top of the range real time protection and scanning with a very minimalist design and it's extremely light weight - like a good AV should be! It doesn't have any of the many extra features of the paid version but it does do what it says it does very well.

  • still works.

  • Looks like it's only effective if you have ALL the features enabled. I used the key in the first comment to update my existing free version and it was all good initially. Got rid of link scanner (because it's a pain) and it has reverted back to a 28 day trial. The key now says it has expired for my PC if I try and add it again.

  • Thnx

  • Between the previous and recent post offering free AVG and this one, I somehow have ended up with a nearly three year licence. Cool!

  • Any idea about this error message on the installation? http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/51732/29575/avg.jpg

  • Imho Bit Defender > Avast >AVG .
