At this point I think I'd wait for the 10th Gen to be on clearance.

    • I think so too. But might get a spare for the oldie, she likes the physical button and her iphone is still lightning

      • Depends how old is her phone, you might end up delaying her upgrade to USB-C

        • +10

Most people don't give two shits about USB-C. Makes no difference what cord they use to charge.

Personally I've got a iPhone 12. The Lightning Port has a port protector constantly in it because I exclusively use Magsafe.

    • +7

I agree too, my 9th Gen is running like a dog with one leg, even after a fresh factory reset to clear it up

      • are you running a demanding game/app?

        • +1

Apple are notorious for slowing down devices when the battery is degraded

        • Not at all, running an email app and basic safari and YouTube on 720p

          • @BatmanAU: Interesting, someone said their kids were playing Roblox with this table with no issues….. I didn't pull the trigger and waiting for the 10th gen to go on discount.

      • +1

Apple purposely making older Iphone and Ipad slower, google it to find out.

        • +3

Pretty sure they received a massive fine for that, not sure they would risk it.

          • @BatmanAU: It was like fining a normal person $50. It was nothing to them

        • +3

Only when the battery is not capable of handling the load and they tell you in the battery settings.

      • +2

        Complete nonsense, they run great.

I have and 8th and an Air 13 M2, i can't tell the difference in email, safari and YouTube at 1080p 99% of the time.

        • +1

Oh well, yours runs great, so must everyone else’s then!

      • There's gotta be something wrong with it because I still run a 5th Gen iPad and it works perfectly fine. I use it for watching 1080p Enhanced YouTube and no issue at all.

        • +1

What you could also try is booting the iPad into DFU mode and then using iTunes, do a full iPad OS re-install on it.

          • +2

@Devastator0: Yes doing a hard reset definitely can lead to a massive improvement in performance on an older device. I can’t say I’ve ever had too many performance issues with my older iPad. It was certainly more snappier than my newer Samsung tablet.

            • +1

@Ronnnie: Yeah that's it eh, I'm actually shocked that he says his 9th gen one has performance problems. Really weird.

      • My ipad 9 is still on iPadOS 17, not the latest 18. Maybe that's the problem. No lag or slowdown in my iPad.

I use my ipad mainly for YouTube, reading free latest magazines and newspapers with library membership. Also sometimes browsing. I bought the ipad 9 soon after it has been released.

10th Gen 64gb for $465 with Officeworks price beat against Costco. Looks like Costco’s price ends today

      https://www.costco.com.au/Computers/iPads-Tablets/iPads/iPad…

    • Why?

    • When does that normally happen?

  • +11

If you don't mind refurb with 1yr warranty it's $271.15 with voucher from Australian Computer Traders on eBay (even less for plus members)

    • In your opinion, would this be a better buy? Need one for my elderly parents.

Nah much older processor. Can’t upgrade to latest iOS

        • Ok, thanks

    • +1

While I did upvote this I will just add they are where I used to sell all my old Apple gear to when I worked at a school so quality may vary if these are ex student ones

    • +1

I have been eye-balling a few devices from Australian Computer Traders on eBay. Where do I find reviews on the shop other than the ones on eBay? Are they trustable?

      • +1

I've made several purchases from them via eBay, laptops, surface pro, accessories, etc and only one device had issues which they promptly replaced without a problem. Can't fault them. Also fast shipping (although I'm not far from their location). Obviously YMMV.

    • If the refurb has a non genuine screen or digitiser glass replacement its worth noting they may flex more than original glass and scratch much easier.

    • consider $70 as new battery and buy new instead of refurbished unless refurbished has new battery.

We actually don’t want office works to come to the party because when they do you can’t price match less 5%.

    • +6

      yeah officeworks isn't invited.

Iphone 11 processor. Wait until 11th gen release

    • I was expecting it to be announced early together with iPhone 6E. because the iPad 10 was released 2.5 years ago!

one article I read said it's probably coming after March 15th. specifically said something about that's when Australian education discounts end or something. it was a US article.

  • +6

I've recently bought a Gen 9 and love it.
Sure, it's not blazingly fast. But that's not what you buy it for, after all, you'd go for a cheap android tablet to maximise price-to-performance.
But as far as getting the Apple "ease-of-use" functionality, decent screen, and a brand new battery (compared to refurb products), I think this is a pretty good price.

    • +1

Just be aware the ipad 9 is expected to receive regular iOS software updates until 2026. Security patches continuing until 2028

10th gen best price still OW price match on costco?

  • These are great for school kids.

    • I want just for Reading Eggs, do so I take it you recommend?

      • +1

Yes, have an 8 and 10 year old using them daily. Just get a good screen protector and case and will be sweet. They also play minecraft on them with no issues.

        • Thanks, will go with this I think, would have liked a mini but can't see any on special

  • Do we know when 11th gen is released?

    • +1

      not specific date yet. March/April

Don't forget (If you go to JB-HiFi) - Load up on some 10% Ultimate gift cards from Woolies or Coles.

If you have OnePass, buying at Coles gives 5x Flybuys points too.

    • You can also use the Ultimate gift cards at Officeworks

  • Is this the same, but cheaper? $299 plus I think you can get an extra $15 off.
