6 Months of Bitdefender Internet Security for Free (OzBargain Exclusive)

892

Well. Not really "exclusive" as you can see from past Bitdefender deals where lots of other websites also host their own "exclusive" Bitdefender Internet Security 6-month-free offer. What happened was that Bitdefender emailed me last week to see whether they can offer this community the same offer bearing our logo — here's the result.

The tagline is "THIS is a lot more than you bargained for!" and you get access to "The Best Antivirus of 2014" for free for 6 months. The offer is live between 5th of May (08:00 am GMT) and 8th of May (08:00 am GMT).

Just need to put in your email address & your name to claim the free license.

wow…Excellent…Big Co's have started to understand power of OZB…

    Lol @ the tagline.. thanks scotty/bitdefender :)

  • does this stack with previous codes? still got 2 years or so left.

    • +2

      I don't think so.

      Email from Bitdefender:

      Hello!

We are very excited that you have selected Bitdefender to keep your PC, files, and identity safe from e-threats!

You have claimed your promotional key and can now install
6 FREE MONTHS of The Best Antivirus of 2014! Please keep in mind that you have 30 days to activate your product.

    • +3

This does not stack, I just tried. I already had 275 days from some other free year, and putting in the new code set my days remaining to 180. I just put my old code back in and I was back at 275, but no free stacking unfortunately.

I'm considering swapping back to MSE just because of the annoying account popups every few days. It's not worth keeping it like that, but at the same time the inconvenience is small enough that I haven't been forced to uninstal it yet :P

      • +1

Or the even more annoying status changes I'm seeing. Icon on the taskbar shows everything rosey but when I open the app it eventually shows that autoscan is off, auto-update is off and the signatures outdated. Probably requires a pita re-install and re-registration. I'll be looking elsewhere when my licence expires. Had no problems at all with kaspersky, only changed because Kas wanted too much to renew and no deals were around at the time.

12 month would be nicer! (or am I too greedy?)

    • +5

I would definitely think so. They were offering 60 second users 9 months (although it seems to have dropped back to 6 months). I would think OzBargain would be harder to please :)

Anyway I didn't ask them for the code as they contacted me for this & I'm just doing the forwarding here. I might ask for a better offer next time.

      • As a typical ozbargainer, my thought normally goes like this:

        1. Anywhere cheaper?
        2. If OW is not cheaper, will it beats by 5%?
        3. Any coupon/voucher to bring it further down?
        4. Discounted gift card/split payment for ING paywave?
        5. Double check if Amex/flybuys/QFF has bonus points/credit back with the merchant.
        6. Before pulling out the card, can I haggle it a little lower?

And after the purchase, the last thought normally is why would I buy it. But seriously, asking for a better offer is a must do for any OZBer.

        • What cashback services do you use? I've read that eBates.com is the best for international purchases. Not sure for intranational purchases.

    • Just got confirmation from Bitdefender that for 60 second they also only offer 6 months. So not sure what happened with that older post.

  • Got it from the previous deal but for those so missed it, good deal!

  • +1

Scotty you sexy thing. Thanks, my old antivirus is about to run out @.@. Edit: Do they offer the same freebie for macs?

    • Did you end up finding a link for mac?

  • +4

notice how they don't put nod32 in their rankings

    • i reckon NOD32 kills this in terms of speed and program footprint.
Too bad NOD isn't cheap compared to the competitors, even with 33% off codes floating around from the Pro1 partner company.

If anyone's with Westpac and hasn't previously taken up Westpac's offer, you can get 12 months for free.

    • Can I get more than 1 licence? I have more than 1 PC.

    "The Best Antivirus of 2014"

    Yeah no…

Why anyone would pay for antivirus is beyond me.

    MSE does everything you need.

    • +1

Yes, I am interested to know if anyone thinks this is better than Microsoft Security Essentials? I see a lot of AV products to be more annoying/performance reducing than they are worth the time for.

    • +5

      MSE does everything you need.

Not by a long shot. There are some very good freeby AVs around which leave MSE/Defender for dead, and even better subscription AVs if you're willing to pay a little.

Read all about it at www.av-comparatives.org or www.AV-Test.org

      Simple comparative chart here

      • lol, wrong.

    • MSE has the worst detection rate out of all the alternatives. Its a good lightweight antivirus but also incredibly basic as Microsoft don't devote a huge amount of effort

    • -1

      MSE does everything you need.

      yeah no…

  • Is there a download link for Macs?

  • -4

6 months is more like a trial; when the standard subscription period for this product is 12 months.

    12 months or no deal.

C'mon OzBargain, they reached out to us, but they need to be schooled on what constitutes a bargain

Then perhaps they will recognise the true power of a bargain - whether it results in paying customers who got started because they were offered a genuine deal, or non-paying customer who leave as soon as Norton start paying them to use their product again (and even then, not many OzBargainers are willing to install Norton even if they are paid to do it).

    • +1

Free is free and its 6x longer than the basic trial period, I think its fair enough

    • -1

I +1'ed you. Antivirus and firewalls should be set&forget for most people, 6 months is nothing.

      • +1

I -1'ed you. Good AV companies spend a LOT of money developing products, doing research, tracking and mapping virus signatures. They get funding from a variety of sources, not the least of which are subscriptions so your 'six months is nothing' comment is what I'd call 'entitled'. The resources and expertise required to produce decent quality, unobtrusive, compatible, and moderately efficient AV software doesn't come free so it's important that AV companies at the top of the tree be supported by users even if it's a token amount every now and then.

        • I can assure you it wont be unobtrusive in six months time. Id rather have ozbargain brethren protected permanently with Security Essentials than deal with headaches 26 weeks from now.

        • Security Essentials is not the best example since it has gone to shit, but I agree with the principal of set and forget. I would much rather get a deal for 50% off the first year price (nothing billed for 6 months, cancel anytime) than to have to re-evaluate 26 weeks later, with the net yearly revenue being the same for bitdefender.

Tell me is it possible to get the 6 months free and already have a billing profile set up for auto renewal, with NO USER INTERACTION whatsoever. Otherwise it is no more useful than a trial if it needs further user attention.

        • -2

Anyone suggesting that Ozbargain brethren rely on MSE or Defender can hardly claim to have their best interests at heart. But I take your and Smeg's point, a few hours (max) every six months is a terrible price to pay for free commercial software. As I said - it's the entitlement mentality: I should be able to get software for free and on top of that not have to worry about it for at least 12 months. It's a deal (for some), you don't like it, and as one mod informed me wrt a different deal that's not actually appropriate use of a neg.

      • You are an ungrateful person.

  • Just a heads up for those who had kaspersky IS and avast! experience… try to avoid BD if you can (hard to argue with freebies).

The s/w firewall controls is nothing like avast or KIS. The alarms/events popups annoys you (this is besides the 'pls sign in to BD account lolz' nag.) the antivirus controls and heuristics management is minimalist.

the application firewall rules dont work properly (tested on 2012 and 2013), upgrading is a pain and it doesn't behave nice with mapped drives (keeps wanting to scan it), and if you add an exclusion of the drive letter (when its disconnected), it will freeze until it times out. The options are only persistent depending on it's mood.

I raised a ticket with them (the BD i had is a paid 1yr sub) about the firewall issue and they didn't get back to me after going through a round of 'troubleshooting'.

just 24 hours ago, I wasted 3 hours manually uninstalling BD and manually restoring my windows 7 x64 because it f***ed up win7's winsocks stack and dnsclient.

Stick with avast if you want free. at least the only known issue i had with it is only the 'upgrade to pro' nags and i had to uninstall it to install vmware and then reinstall it back.

tl;dr: stay the hell away from BD.

note to BD devs: If you want to copy the UI, please don't reference from Symantec/Norton, but at least reference from ZoneAlarm. Even the year 2000 version (first release) is fine. Traffic logs output to a static text file is pure laziness.

  • decent

  • +1

Or just get the new, light free edition itself forever ;)

  • Why not just use Windows Defender? Are these paid products really worth it? And if so what makes them better?

  • Freebie is nice, but BIS is very intrusive. I uninstalled a PAID version and installed Avast free + ZoneAlarm - does everything I want without constantly bugging me or taking over the PC

  • +2

Microsoft Security Essential or Microsoft Defender, plus some common sense safe computer practice is the way to go IMO.

    Pro:

Lightweight, doesn't feel like there is an antivirus software yelling "I am here! Look at me!" and eat up your computer resources.

Auto scan and update, handle most virus I encountered fine, offering me to remove or quarantine or allow.

Free, no need to pay or anything subscription. Unlike some "free" AV, they install bundled junk and unnecessary services for you.

    Con:

Probably not enough for people who is not familiar with basic computer troubleshooting and safe practice on the internet.

  • Do these codes have to be activated within a certain time after they're emailed to you, or can you "save them up"? I still have some time left on my current license, and these usually don't stack or they replace your existing license.

    • within 30 days after you receive email.
