UPDATE from Dell Corporate Affairthis is an email that I have received. —scotty

OzBargain users should be aware that while every effort is made to check for errors in typography and photography on the Dell Australia online store, inadvertent errors may occur. In this instance, an inadvertent error caused a Linksys Wireless N Router to be listed on Dell Australia’s website at an incorrect price of AUD$20.90, including delivery and GST.

As soon as Dell Australia recognised this inadvertent error, the router was removed from its website. Dell Australia is also proactively contacting customers who placed an order at the incorrect price.

As a gesture of goodwill, Dell Australia is offering each customer whose order was not accepted the option to purchase one router at a special price of AUD$229, including delivery and GST.

While Dell Australia has made it a priority to contact its customers directly, Dell Australia apologises for any inconvenience or confusion that may have been caused to OzBargain users.

Original Post

As the title says, the Linksys Dual Band Wireless N Router for only $20.90, get it while you can, it might not last for too long, as it usually retails for something like $170. CNET gives it a 4/5 stars so it ought to be good.

Enjoy :D

(P.S This is my first submission :p)

Mod - just moved the Error to the front of the title and used all caps. Remove "confirmed".

      • Officeworks prob won't work by tomorrow. There would have been a price alert already sent out cuz i bet heaps of ppl are hopping in their cars right now to test it out. lol.

I remember there was the ipod thing with HT awhile back, the next morning right when they opened they denied the price match due to a price alert on their systems.

        • A "price alert" (whatever that is) doesn't absolve them from honouring their advertised price match policy.

      • u sure about dick smith?

this is what i just found:

Price Policy: To be eligible the following conditions must be met: Competitor must have a retail store. Price comparisons must include all delivery charges, and bonus offers. Product must be identical (e.g. same brand/model/colour). Confirmation of competitor's price is required. Excludes exclusive models. Competitor must be in stock (not available for back orders). No bulk purchases, retail quantities only. Excludes competitor's clearance lines, limited stock offers or Member / Club / Internet prices.

        • -1

Well, yes, I was wondering which part of that would have excluded the price match — and there it was — right at the end: "internet".

Dick Smith should wake up to 2009.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: also dell don't have a retail store, do they?

            • @themonty: Hmm, you could be correct. Also, they sell in Officeworks lol

              • @YesPleaseThankYou: do u have a link to the full terms and conditions of officeworks' price match guarantee? cuz the link u posted earlier seems have just one line on it. (that line represented by the ^)

            • @themonty: Apparently they have 15 of of these 'Kiosk'-like outlets placed in big shopping centres around Australia, but I've seen one and they more or less just help you to place an order on Dell's website I think.

              • @inherentchoice: yeh, they just have computers connected to the dell website and they can hold your hand through the process :P

  • i Just bought a Netgear… but what the hell :D

  • We will all get our emails on Monday with the generic sorry email :D

    • And a generous offer for 10% off from their real price of $309

      • That is bordering on spam and using our emails as avenues for sending unsolicited advertisements

        • +3

You gave dell your email address and agreed to recieve emails from them

Do you just think they should ignore you?

          • +1

@anthony: No, I did not subscribe to their crap emails.

I provided them with my email address to enable the processing of my order.

            • @YesPleaseThankYou:

I provided them with my email address to enable the processing of my order.

              Yes you did.

And applebyte said "That is bordering on spam and using our emails as avenues for sending unsolicited advertisements"

Dell sending out an email informing that the price is incorrect and you can purchase the original item for 10% less is not an unsolicited advertisement.

To process your order dell needs to email you to see if you would like the original item at the correct price.

  • +1

wow why aren't they correcting this mistake when they fully know it's a mistake?!
They deserve to be forced to honour this deal!

    • +2

Personally, I have already decided to take Dell to Fair Trading if my order is not honoured.

      • wow even after succeeding at getting the deal, you'd still care?

        • +4

Of course, this is a matter of principle.

I'll just use them as footrests.

          • +1

@YesPleaseThankYou: first send email to newspaper, they love this news, especially this is not the first time. see what happen. is it the publicity that dell after in australia with the current market? it seems stupid choice if they don't honour it.

  • Comment on lifehacker.com.au:
"I called Mastercard to make sure all went fine; turns out $290.00 was charged to my card. Stay away from this one!" :(

    • +6

Dell would be in more trouble if they did that

    • +1

That's why I've kept copies of all of the Dell screens.

If that happens to me I will simply call my financial institution and dispute the transaction under the chargeback rules.

      • hey ya reckon OW would still honour a printout tomorrow? or would they want to check it out on the site for themselves?

        • Give it a try. My advice would be to catch them when they're busy. Just go straight to the counter when the queue is the biggest. If you don't get it, no-one is going to force you to hand over the cash.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: true… but then again even though, their eyes are probably gonna pop once they notice the HUGE price difference! lol

            i'll sleep on it.

btw just to confirm: based on ow's Ts and Cs, they (technically) can't refuse to price-beat because "they think there's a pricing error" right?

            • @themonty: No. Where did you read that?

As far as I am concerned Dell advertised a genuine price and Officeworks matched it.

              • @YesPleaseThankYou: tried, and was out of luck :(

one said that it was definitely a pricing error (/liquidation) and referred to the clause on the Dell site that says if it's an erroneous price, they won't sell it to you. another said that they've right to refuse the sale regardless of Dell's price.

                • @themonty: None of that is in the terms and conditions. Sorry to say, but you were duped.

                  • @YesPleaseThankYou: 10.5 To the extent permitted by law, any typographical, clerical or other error or omission in sales literature, quotation, price list, acceptance of offer, invoice or other documents or information issued by Dell shall be subject to correction without any liability on the part of Dell.

doesn't that mean they don't have to sell you the item? :s

and regarding the right to refuse a sale, don't all businesses have that? (not sure where i could find that for you but what do u think of this http://forums.mactalk.com.au/8/71404-advice-please-good-guys…)

and, lastly, what do u do with people who are adamant that they just won't sell the item at that price? can't steal! :p

                    • @themonty: If you look up comments from NSW Fair Trading about previous Dell "price errors" they indicated that those terms and conditions have little, if any impact, on a consumer's legal rights. They added that it would need to be tested in a court of law.

    • +1

The Dell acknowlegement email clearly shows the price to be charged on a users credit card. Could be a troll post on Lifehacker.

      • Yeah I think it could indeed be a troll. If it isn't then I would consider that person to be very lucky. Not only have Dell confirmed the contract by accepting payment, but they have also broken the law by overcharging. It would put the purchaser in a very strong position if trying to force Dell to uphold the sale at the advertised price.

    • hahaha. they haven't charge my account yet.

  • +1

It is so dodgy that they have not corrected this error yet

    • Of course they haven't. This is about driving traffic to their site.

  • +1

I think OW can refuse to price match this item as the one selling by Dell could be the OEM product/package, not the retail version

    • No, that is not stated anywhere.

      It's just a standard product.

  • Seems like Dell just took it down. Party is over guys.

  • Our apologies…

The product you have selected is not currently available for online purchase in the segment you have selected.

    lol

  • so far nothing has been charged on my credit card.

Anyone’s credit card been charged yet?
    Fingers crossed they charge mine.

By the way, I think it’s good when people post stuff like this. We all remember GAME’s $20 DS3 controllers!

  • Another price error … Dell … I won't try it. But last time, the refund for Logitech MX Revolution is pretty quick - within 2 weeks.

  • was still available for me, just ordered two, have received acknowledgement email so offer is still live on there website. waits for apology email from dell

  • +1

Can't help getting in to play this game with Dell!

  • Back up on their site for $139:

    http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&l…

…is this the switch following the bait?

    • +1

      that's a different model

    • +1

      WRT 610 N vs WRT 160 N.

And yet still more than cheapest on staticIce. Heck, it barely made it to page 3.

    • +3

Yep, this is what all of us who have ordered will be offered.

      Sorry, that's not good enough.

If Dell had only done this once, you could excuse the behaviour.

Can't wait to sit opposite their legal in a Fair Trading Hairing.

There are so many examples of this being a pattern of behaviour. I'm going to kick him under the table.

  • +3

We should all raise this issue to ACCC and fair trading if dell doesn't honour the deal. As this advertisement was up for a reasonable amount of time.

    • I reckon, worth a try, not like anything would happen.. got nothing to lose though. Dell just keeps doing it again and again. and WTF $20.90 how is that similar to $139…

  • +4

Just want to say good luck to those who have ordered, gratz to those who have managed to price match and sorry to those who have/will miss out as a result. I only posted the deal in hopes of helping guys after using this website several times in the past, and thanks for not crucifying me as I've seen it done to others before me.

    • were u able to get one?

    • Hey mate I want my router or I'll have you on a stick…
just kidding. You have helped a few I suspect of actually grabbing an amazing bargain

      • it's only 90% off..

        :p kiddin. couldn't agree more!

  • +1

Yes we should raise it to the ACCC. What do you think the chances of dell honouring the deal are?

    • Zero, I dont trust them anymore

      • +3

i dont trust the ACCC or dell lol.

    • we should go to fair and trading dept. but u are paying $30 to lodge this complaint.

easy way, send email to newspaper. see what happen then.

      • nah fair trading is free. If you decide to take it to court (CCCT) then its $30. or $5 if you have a concession card.

        • what do u mean free? u mean lodge then competitor will honour directly? no way, it has to be go to the court mate. thats why i said it will cost $30, see their website, i have done once before with my realestate agent and i won.

          • @dragonrabit: Lodge a complaint with fair trading (that is a free service), if they cant help you, then book in with CCCT.

It depends, if they respond to OFT, then you won't need to go to court. but yeh, it might go to CCCT

So yeah, OFT = FREE, DFT = $30

  • +1

    We all got DILLED AGAIN!

  • +3

it's amazing how many thread updates there are
when ozbargainers are cotd-ed or dell-ed…

  • +2

Just because the product isn't available online anymore doesn't mean they've canned the orders already placed. Fingers crossed…

    • +2

good choice on the username ;p

      • Yep, pot luck! Like filling out all those online forms for "freebies" we never end up receiving ;-)

  • +1

ACA or Today Tonight would have a field day over this.

    Who is willing? :)

    • Thanks! They'll take it more seriously if more people bring it up!

    • Call ACCC - they write your name, number and the company down. If there are sufficient complaints, then they will look into it. Otherwise they do nothing.

Then call DFT/OFT and start that.

Dont bother with TT/ACA - no hopers go on there

  • I am going to vote down on this one because I've had a chat with a guy from Officeworks, Dell quite promptly notified their competitors however it took them a good 8 - 10 hrs before the deal was removed from their site.

    Not happy dell.

    • +1

Are you able to substantiate that Dell proactively notified their competitors? That seems like very odd behavior for any company to do. Most probably what happened was the competitor rang Dell to verify the price and was told the price was wrong.

    • if the bloke at officeworks is a friend, see if he will print out the email for you…

      • If you can get a copy it would be an interesting read

    • -2

That would be called price-fixing. There are now jail penalities for such activities.

If indeed this is going on and you know about this (and it sounds like you do), by not reporting it, you are concealing a criminal activity. You can go to jail.

      I kid you not.

      • +1

        It is not price fixing.

Dell was telling their competitors who price match that the price on their website is an error and not a genuine price.

They are not telling people how much to sell the item for.

    • So they supposedly care to notify their competitors and have yet to notify customers who have ordered it?! Hmmm

  • -1

    same old

  • Daaamn, there's like over 100 people that voted on this.
Just band together and send a letter to the ACCC or something and muscle Dell.

  • Ordered Logitech MX Revolution last time and they doing the same this time with the pricing error…not reliable Dell.

    • And you can count on the ACCC doing the same as they did with the MX Revolution shambles…. Squat!

  • +1

So.. Where was it confirmed they will not be honouring this deal?
I still only have one email from Dell - The order acknowledgement.

  • +1

Lolz at the people who were wondering about the LCD's. Of course paying $30,000USD was cheaper than honouring the orders.

If they followed through with the orders, it would have cost them $3,510,000USD worth of potential profit. Obviously the guy who priced it is now playing a ukulele on the corner of 10th and 11th :P

  • +10

    registered just to vote neg…..sigh…

then find out u need to be at least 30days to vote neg…fml

    • lol ur awesome

    • At least you will be ready for the next Dell F'up. Oops I mean pricing 'error'.

      • +1

Yes we should start that thread now to save time. We can insert "product name" later ;-) Don't think Dell are in any hurry to learn from their previous mistakes and improve their processes to minimise fallout. Seriously can't they get their work experience kids to run a batch file comparison to compare prices and flag anomilies before release?

Shows some companies won't improve without penalties to make them: http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/taiwan-orders-dell-to-hon…

  • +1

Anyone lawyer or law student are willing to draft a standard complaint letter to ACCC? I suppose if we could make enough noise from everyone here, ACCC must willing to look in this issue more seriously.
