No.
The router connects to your NBN™ connection box, and creates your home network, wifi & ethernet.
It replaces any other modem/router you may be using. Also, they are not extenders. They are mesh points.
They work very differently to extenders and give you better range without compromising speed and you keep the same SSID (wifi network name). So… Assuming I have a house that currently has no internet, router or whatever. But I can sign up for NBN via a service provider and they ask if I have my own router.
What do I actually need to buy? Would this work?
Sorry for the basic question.
Yes. This will work. One hub will be the router and the second will be a mesh point.
This would work fine, you get one router and one additional access point.
Depending on the size of your house and what the internal walls are made of, this setup may work fine… If you have a large, multi-storey property, you may need more access points to get the best coverage.
It partly depends on what NBN connection type is available at your home, as FTTN requires a modem and a router. Whereas HFC, FTTP, and Fixed wireless only require a router.
@Rail Rider95: I have FTC with one of those NBN boxes, am I correct in assuming these would be ok for me? The NBN box is essentially acting as the ‘modem’ when comparing to old adsl connections right?
Also I had the same question as posed my earlier poster about the difference between a mesh system and wifi extender? Essentially a mesh system increases the range but any device only sees one wifi connection but seamlessly switches to the closest extender/mesh device without interruption where as a range extender is connecting to the wifi but is a separate access point so if you move from one part of the house to another with the extender it will switch networks?
I went into a store and the salesman didn’t seem to know the difference, he just said it’s basically newer technology with a stronger/more stable connection, really want that helpful.@Clarky77: Someone else will need to answer your question regarding FTTC sorry, as I have no experience with how that type is rolled out.
As for Mesh vs Extender, you pretty much have the idea of it, yes.
One note for an extender though, is that your phone won't necessarily switch between your main wifi and the extenders wifi automatically. That is a big part of the problem. That you often have to manually switch between networks if the performance drops.@Rail Rider95: nbn supply a modem on FTTC called the Network Connection Device (NCD). Supply your own router.
@Clarky77: Yeah the nbn NCD box used on FTTC is a modem. You plugin the Nest router to the nbn NCD box and put the Nest point where you need it. Being in a unit you probably only need a single router to provide enough Wi-Fi range.
@Twix: Awesome, that’s what I was thinking but there’s conflicting info online.
Tx so much!
Good price for these - but given you could have got the Pro 3 pack for not a lot more, I’m not sure how good a deal it is comparatively
Ok, can some one confirm,a router picks up your wifi and creates a seperate network, and extender just pushes the network further? Why would would you want a router over extender? Thanks, your sincerely idiot
