Should I buy this or wait for another salter deal ?

    • I would not waste money on a "branded" one when one of these does the jobs. The branded ones are often not as precise (they do not let you measure weight to 0.01kg)

      • -1

Do you know anything about the Salter luggage scales to offer that advice. Salter is a trusted & established name in weighing equipment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salter_Housewares

        Your statement…

The branded ones are often not as precise (they do not let you measure weight to 0.01kg)

…shows a lack of understanding of the concepts of precision & accuracy. Yes the scale might show you weight to 10g, but the stated accuracy is 20g (see description). Any instrument which purports to display at twice its level of its accuracy is not to be trusted. Thats why the good ones would not try to fool users the instrument is more accurate than it displays.

        • +2

Can be easily used as a luggage scale for just $5. Overloading by 20g will not charge you @ Airport.

        • No criticism of this deal or general accuracy, just the misguided concept that the more digits displayed, the higher the precision/accuracy. Cheap scales may fool people into thinking they are more accurate, by showing more digits. (Am packing at the moment, so was tempted by this deal.)

But accuracy is not all that important - all scales are inaccurate. If correct, 20g is very good, but accuracy is usually stated as a percentage. In my experience even some discount airlines allow up to 1KG over with no hassle. I have used a Pound Shop (analogue) luggage scale ($1.60 at the time) - accurate enough.

Besides I am a carry on frequent flier (up to 9 months a year), who used to find a scale at the airport & repack until just under the limit, and stuff pockets or wears extra clothes. At my accommodation, I usually find a set of accurate enough bathroom scales & weigh me with & without luggage. Saves the (small) added weight of carrying the scales I found I almost never used.

My current light flight strategy is…
at home, accurately weigh every item I regularly travel with (clothes are marked inside with weight; equipment weight is recorded on database (accessed on phone or computer); list of travel items is assembled based on trip need & weight, then recorded for trip - so total weight is always known, so no need to weigh again)
Added items on trip can easily be weighed (at post offices etc)

        • These scales are certainly not accurate to 20g. That is misleading!
Rather 20g is the minimum weight / difference these scales detect. (Shown by ad for same product at BIC - below) The accuracy, when compared to very accurate & precise reference weights, will be very different to 20g. But not of any real concern to travellers at this price :-)

        • I understand precision and accuracy spectacularly well. I tested this scale's accuracy against objects of a known weight, and it was spot-on. Accuracy being good, the only remaining criteria for comparison is precision.

Throwing away precision for the sake of perfect accuracy is silly, given how close the accuracy is to the precision. As long as the accuracy is reported.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Wow… and this is worth all the effort over a $5 scale?!?

        • I won't even charge you my normal consultation fee ;) Besides its a $2.89 scale at BIC!

        • I understand precision and accuracy spectacularly well….
As long as the accuracy is reported.

Um, make_it_so, the reported accuracy in the description is incorrect!
Scales that apparently show a measurement to a finer level than its accuracy ("measure weight to 0.01kg" as you think is good), thats not a reliable measurement. But you should 'spectacularly' know that. Of course instrumentation is of little interest to travellers.

Salter $13 with free shipping http://www.binglee.com.au/salter-9500-luggage-scale-12882
Popular item. Better quality, good handle, good strap attachment for luggage - exactly what people complain is wrong with these scales.

      • Salter is the best luggage scale i ever used, it did exact scale amount on the house and airport, i bought 3 other china made, but it is useless as the hook cant hook anything on heavy bag, do not waste your money on this, GO salter with the link provided by bruce

        • The difference in price will not be noticed in the overal cost of an overseas trip anyway ;)

        • thanks just got another one

      • +1 for the Salter's, would've been lost without them travelling overseas

          Salter GPS?

      • Good price but limit of 2 and they want you to create a Bing Lee account.

I bought one of these from dealextreme for ~7 a few years ago. Mine came with battery, though. It works really well, and the battery is still lasting after >3 years. It also gives temperature if you hold one of the buttons down. It is very accurate.
Downside: the hook is small, and you need to use a strong piece of string or similar to loop through the handle of your luggage and then hang it onto the hook of the scale. Also, hard to read while holding a 25kg suitcase onto it. But for $5 it's great value.

    • i have this one too, bought on ebay. it is surprisingly good and much cheaper than salter.

  • Expensive.

    Tip:
Search ebay for 40kg hanging scale

    then:
Sort by Price + Postage lowest first

As usual, shops will lie to you regarding the regular price.
This is a good scale. Some dealers (most?) will send it to you without batteries though. That's why you have those eneloops. As stated above, this scale has a built-in thermomenter too.

    • don't forget to select location to worldwide.

      • Good point.

I bought one of these and found it very difficult to hook a suitcase to measure the weight.

I did much better with a scale that has a strap that goes round the suitcase handle - see for example http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-10g-50KG-LCD-Electronic-Porta…

I bought the one with a strap (not that one but similar) for under $10 on ebay

Sorry to Neg you, I haven't negged anything for a while but bic has it for $2.89
    http://www.buyincoins.com/item/1209.html
I have one of these and they are not bad, that fabric strap looks like it can't hold more than 1kg but it surprisingly does the job.

    • Thanks for the BIC link, got one in the cart and ready to order. I ordered one of these type of scales from DealExtreme (the smiley ones) years ago and they are surprisingly sturdy. Thanks again jdas

    • Thanks jdas. I didn't notice that. Is it same one?

  • You can't beat the freeby AusPost scale from a couple of yrs back.

    • Oh!

      Is it still available?

      • Redemption by Timetravel still available ;)

        • Do you have a link for that?
