Repost of this expired deal
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/834223

credit to @hugamuga for the original deal

here's what they said:

"you basically pick a destination you want to go in europe out of the following list (Manchester, London, Paris, Barcelona, Zurich, Milan, Rome, Munich, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Copenhagen). then add a segment of Manchester to Houston (find your own way to Manchester but internal europe flights are pretty cheap)New York to Frankfurt (or vice versa). then for final flight choose one of the following cities in United States back to Australia (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston*, New York**) once again you will need transport between Houston and whatever city you choose

the price generally comes out between $2000 and 2500 even in times where booking the transatlantic flight seperately would be $1500 on its own."

i was having a look for some flights at the end of the year and remembered this deal, thought it might be worth reposting

Do note that the Manchester to Houston flight is ending April 2025 according to https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/fifth-freedom-rou…

I can't seem to find any cheap flights around that time anyway.

The cheapest prices I see are in October - November.

Importantly, you can add a stopover in Singapore & Tokyo to make it even better (albeit a bit more expensive)
Returning from New York instead of elsewhere in USA e.g. west coast makes it more expensive

Here's a few examples of itineraries:

PER to MXP 20th October
FRA to JFK 6th November
LAX to PER 20th November
= $1795 at BYOjet and Aunt Betty (not particularly nice websites to book from, but Aunt Betty is owned by flight centre)

change above to SYD causes price to +$67

change above to include Singapore stopover 3 days causes price to +$62

change above to include Tokyo stopover 7 days (add LA to Tokyo freedom flight)
= +$142

Dec/Jan example:

PER to LHR 1st Dec
FRA to JFK 15th Dec
LAX to NRT 5th Jan
NRT to PER 14th Jan

= $2506 (Aunt Betty & BYOjet again)

last year it was way more expensive on Singapore airlines website iirc, so booking via OTAs is probably the dealbreaker for many
seems to be available on the singapore airlines website for a similar price

  • Supercheap!

  • Question: in your example of

    PER to MXP 20th October
    FRA to JFK 6th November
    LAX to PER 20th November

How are you getting from MXP to FRA and then from JFK to LAX? You’d be buying additional flights in between, so the price is not really $1795 in reality, that’s not achievable

    • +1

Yeah, that’s on top and up to you how you travel between those cities. It would be still pretty cheap for Aus - Europe - USA - Asia - Aus flights.

    • +11

That's what an Open Jaw series of flights is. There is a gap segment between an arrival and an departure point where you need to make the connection yourself.

    • No need to fly from Milan to Frankfurt - trains are great and cheap

      • +1

Not that cheap any more, used to be great value when I could get the student Eurail pass when I went last year it was cheaper to fly.

        • In my experience it’s only cheaper to fly without checked luggage which I would personally need in Europe

  • Is there a J version of this?

    • Yes, it is basically a standard open jaw return flight. The fare conditions of the strictest flight will take precedence. It can be booked in both economy and various business ( j inclusive)

  • +1

How do people find these deals?

    • +5

There are Round-The-World fares from major airlines. You usually travel eastward (Aust-Asia-Europe-USA) or westward reverse selecting cities where a particular airlines and its alliance partners travel to. Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa are good airlines to travel with because of their extensive network. There are Australian travel agents specialise on RTW travels. Try roundabouttravel.com.au and subscribe to their email deals.
The cheapest fares is where you select a hub or major airport the airlines go to. Once you select a smaller airport where you need to get a connecting flight, the additional fares increase.

  • -7

    Why not Sydney

    • +5

You can, the above is just an example. Choose multistop and play around with the port and destination

    • +3

@Wiadro - The deal does mention SYD at + $67

      • +2

        Thanks 🙏

  • Lufthansa and Finnair also have similar routes

  • Wait what? Flight to europe itself costs more in Dec

  • +16

If you check on Singapore Air website you can book direct with them for $1,863 instead of the $1,795 with AuntBetty or BYOJet so not much more for booking direct.

    • +4

      this is the way

    • What a world ey!

  • Is this like one of those tricks where you are using backhaul flights to minimize spend? so using carriers lesser frequented routes that are often cheaper? Not a travel guru I don't think beyond just booking exactly where I need to go but I have heard of things like this, similar to getting cheap business class because you are doing some oddball route that no one ever uses.

    • +2

Airlines are not stupid - if "no one ever uses" a route, they are canned pretty quickly.

      • +3

In logistics there are lots of routes, land sea and air, where there's a lot less coming back from the destination, thus the costs to engage are much less because logistics/transport companies would prefer a fuller vehicle at a cheaper rate than an empty vehicle at full rate. I was asking if this bargain is utilizing the idea to allow for cheaper flights, just out of curiosity because I am still learning how these work and would like to try a long haul business flight in the future.

        • -3

          This is not a thing.

As mentioned above, if there's a "long haul business flight" that's always undersold, then it stops existing.
Airlines generally only fly full planes.

          • +1

@Nom: I asked this question in the hopes that someone actually knowledgeable would reply, instead I have two people telling me things even I know as an amateur that are simply not true. Airlines do not generally only fly full planes, thats the biggest lie here, yes of course they would prefer the flight be full(hence the reduced cost seats for less popular routes) however that is not always possible. the second biggest is that they cancel a lesser frequented route because one way doesn't sell as well as the other way. I know these things both via the content I hear/see and my own personal experience too.

Seriously guys if you don't know just don't comment.

  • +1

"= $1795 at BYOjet and Aunt Betty (not particularly nice websites to book from, but Aunt Betty is owned by flight centre)"

Yeah, not exactly a ringing endorsement of Aunt Betty.

    • +4

Near on a year to get a covid refund out of Aunt Betty. Never again. Always booking with the airline direct from now on.

I used this exact hack from the previous posting. We got 5 pax economy flights Adelaide>Singapore>Munich>Overland>Frankfurt>New York>Frankfurt>Singapore>Adelaide for $8k. To top it off, I enrolled my kids in the Krisflyer program and transferred their points to my account after the trip. I'm about to book a 1 pax return flight to Vietnam on points earned exclusively from those RTW flights. It did tak a lot of playing about with the Singapore Airlines website to find the best combination of flights, but well worth the effort in the end.

In contrast, return flights to Japan in January for the same crew of 5 will cost near $6k on Jetscar. Daylight robbery.

    • How do you search this? I run it in the Google link below and there seem to be nothing available for ex: ADL.

      • +5

It was a while ago, but I did it on the Singapore airlines website. Select multi city, flexible with dates, punch in your desired flights, being sure to include NY to Frankfurt or vice versa. Hit search, then spend hours scrolling through various dates until you find a good combination of flights. I just spent 2 minutes having a quick look and came up with my above mentioned itinerary for $2183 in October. You could likely improve on that by spending time farnarkiling about.

        See here

      • imo the best way to search is to mess around with dates using skyscanner, find some that you like

and then go and search those ones on the singapore airlines website

      • Just change start and end point to ADL ~2295 for October but play with dates and see what happens when you click through to SQ website.

Google Flights link to search without Aunt Batty. It clicks through to the Singapore Airlines official site. You can also modify to go when you want with the back arrows.

    eg
    MEL-MXP
    FRA-JFK
    LAX-NRT
    NRT-MEL

    • I looked at something similar to this when I booked my flights. Be aware that the ground leg between JFK and LAX can be a bit of a dog. When we were going, the internal american flights for that leg alone nearly cost as much as the rest of the RTW trip. It sucked the life out of the deal. YMMV though.

      • +1

Allowing $300 for flights across USA should have covered it under normal circumstances.

  • Wow. $2117 (~ $1650 + ~ $450 airport taxes). Bargain 👍

  • It's a great long running fare.

Depending on origin, dates, destinations and stopovers, price has typically been $1,800-2,400.

Better than the offers from the specialist RTW travel agency mentioned above, which I've found to be vapourware.

  • +1

From SYD and back through Seattle Google flights link ~1933 https://www.google.com/travel/flights/s/XMCv7NySN1YFYL5L7

  • -3

    Ewww. Trump-land.
Who knows what visa would be needed by the time the flights comes around.

    • +2

To minimise USA time, Use JFK as a gateway to a Canada cross country train then transit from Vancouver to Seattle to continue on SQ.

      https://www.google.com/travel/flights/s/Gq45MjRaMqjaWkNWA

      MEL-MXP
      MXP-BCN
(Make your own way in Europe via trains)
      FRA-JFK
(Make your own way across Canada via train)
      SEA-MEL

      ~$1,887

Optional stopover options include one of Singapore, Barcelona or Tokyo.

      • Man that's a great idea. Using JFK to enter Canada has definitely not occured in my head. I will have to keep it in mind for my next trip.

  • This is the long way!

  • Hope everyone enjoys their trip

  • +2

Thanks Op! just want to confirm, is New York to Frankfurt (or vice versa) mandatory to get this deal ?

    • Good question.

    • just did a quick search

perth to london, LA to perth shows as $1668 on singapore airlines

add frankfurt to ny in the middle —> $1931

crossing the atlantic on a full service carrier would be more than the price difference here

    • Might have changed since I booked 12 months ago, but back then it worked with either FRA-JFK, or FRA-IHA(Houston) from memory.

  • has anyone priced in J business?

  • Anyone know any routes that start & end in the USA instead?

    • depends on where you want to stop e.g. Aus? Japan? Singapore?

if you go LAX —> tokyo —> singapore —> europe —> JFK
i.e. stopping for however long in tokyo and singapore and anywhere in europe (that SA flies to)

i can see $1854 in November, which is a v good price

      • Do you have a link for that please, I can't seem to get it working?

LAX/SEA -> tokyo -> syd -> europe -> JFK would be amazing if it exists!

        • lol unfortunately everything is showing as 10k+ now

    • Starting in USA seems to break it.

  • +2

jeez no wonder we're not solving climate change when flying is this cheap

  • It's worth pointing that Star Alliance and OneWorld both do around the world options too. They won't be as cheap as these but you will have far more flexibility in routes/airlines etc.

It worked brilliantly for me when doing 2/3 week Business trips as I had to stay somewhere over a weekend and could easily engineer in say Bali, Phuket, Vancouver etc. My biggest regrets is that I never managed to get Iceland in due to limited airlines and missed a $120 USD upgrade to fly Concorde as it clashed with a meeting schedule. A few months later came that fateful crash…

  • +1

USA ew. Can you avoid it? Maybe Canada or S. America

  • Same price to what I paid at Christmas time, Darwin to Hervey Bay return.

  • Cue Daft Punk

  • I did this in Dec 2024. SYD-London, Frankfurt-NY, LA-Tokyo, Tokyo-SYD A$2,740 per person. From 4 Dec to 4 Jan. Everything went smoothly with SQ.
