  • Way better than the $15 the Australia post charges.
Not to mention they wouldn't accept any photos that they didn't take themselves claiming that they aren't good enough, then they take a crap photo and its fine.

Never had my own photos rejected - follow the passport instructions, then print for about 50c at HN.

i agree but it also depends who you get serving you at the post office. I did it my self using a DSLR a couple of years ago and only paid 40 cent to print it at kmart and it got accepted for my daughter but mine got rejected recently from office works which were exactly like the aust post ones. its just a money grab from Aust post agencies.

The passport office tries to push you to go to auspost for passports, but I rang them and said "There's no way I'm going to those dickheads at auspost for a passport, what can we do?" and they were all "No worries, what day/time would you like to come and see us?".

Clearly the passport office would prefer to outsource the work to auspost and their web site is worded to make it look like you can only go direct to them if you pay extra for 'fast processing' but there was absolutely no problem with me turning up to an actual Department of Immigration Passport Office and doing it all there, no extra fees. I went to the one between Central and Mortuary stations on Lee St in Sydney.

        • Sorry Douglasb :( my stubbie fingers pressed the neg button, so sorry mate.
I originally wanted to say thanks for the info, never going to Aus post for photos again, directly to the Passport Office from now on :)

P.S. can someone give him a Pos please, feel bad enough.

        • Hmm, im going to have to disagree here.
I know for a fact that a certain passport office doesnt do their own. Nor do they push you to auspost.
My place of work is the place the passport department point people to to get proper passport photos done, not only for Australian passports, but for the German embassy, Canadaian embassy, as well as Chinese passports.
Perhaps the place you went to was just lazy or ceebs and just flick people off to the post office, but they really technically shouldnt..
Especially considering how many rejections come from Auspost photos…

        • A passport lasts for ten years. Is it really a big deal to go to the "dickheads" at the post office once a decade in order to get a photo that you are sure is going to comply?

        • +1

Yeah, Auspost is abusing its franchise to push their own photo service.

        • Agreed. Auspost is getting a bit greedy in many regards, they wanted to charge me $3.95 for the drone (not a JP) to witness a basic 'stat dec' type form the other day…I told 'em to get stuffed & got one of my colleagues to do it for me for nix!

As for passport photos, I've done quite a few for myself & friends/family members…as Bruce said, as long as you follow the guidelines there should be no reason for them to be knocked back.

        • It never made it past the auspost desk because they refused to submit forms with the photos that I had provided which followed the guidelines more than the final image that they took which chopped off my wife's hair.

  • I wonder if I need a membership card to take the passport photos @Costco?

    • The photo centre is inside Costco so I would assume so unless you have a friend to take you in, in which case you should be able to get it under their membership as long as they pay.

  • Will they be approved?
Even post office $15 ones dont get approved…

  • its $15.95 Australia post charges. yes they are very strict rejected mine because they reckon my mouth was slightly open. you may be best trying to apply directly at passport office and putting in complaint against that post office. office works uses the same camera i think and only charge $9.95. luckily ow gave me a refund.

They'd get a crapton of complaints.

I work at a photoshop (not going to mention where obviously), and we take plennty of passports photos a day.
There's so many rules, and dimensions, and "THINGS" you have to do.

People come in and whinge to us about going here - getting rejected, going there - getting rejected.
In 15 years, we've never had a single rejection. :)

Just a couple things - you cant show any teeth. take off glasses. make sure the place has PROPER lighting. ie. make sure the background in the end result is truly white, not grey. also, make sure you ask them measure the dimensions before you walk out the shop. If it's not the right dimensions, ask them to retake it for you.

Its going to be interesting to see what they sell the Dyson DC44 Animal for as they have not yet listed a price only to say its a hot item.

The Sealy PosturePremier Queen Size @ $497.99 looks about the right price for what the Sealy site suggests when you select "Sleep is a waste of time" as one of the various options.

    Hurry up and open Ringwood.
